Got a terramaster F4-424 base model a few months ago just for the fact you can toss a third party os on it in less than 10 minutes also allows for upgradable RAM as a upgrade down the line. Also couldn't build a nas myself in the same form factor for cheaper than the terramaster.
How does Plex perform on the base model? I've seen the review for the Pro model, but I'd like to know if I could save money with the base version. I'll mainly be streaming my 4K UHD rips at home, with occasional downscaling to 1080p.
I run unraid and run a small instance of jellyfin docker on my server and have no problems. I have pegged the processor put it mainly when using local LLM's which i haven't had an issue with using the mini ones for basic stuff. Normal use is about 10 docker containers and a couple VMs and never more than 10% cpu usage the ram hovers around 50 to 60% but still have the base 8gigs
You can do the same on UGreen models. Third-party software is officially allowed by UGreen. In fact you can use any brand OS, RAM and NVMe, unlike Synology and Terramaster.
Perfect timing! I've been tempted by some BF deals, but still deciding. Leaning toward Terramaster F4-424 with Unraid - assuming they'll have license deals on Friday! 😅
ugreen nas regional availability has less to do with them being a big company already supplying the world with their other products and more to do with the scale of their nas manufacturing. yes they have lots of facilities all over the world but it takes time to retool those facilities or open new facilities to meet demand, which is absolutely staggering at the moment. I'm sure they will eventually expand, but right now they are focused on meeting the demand of their initial markets, not to mention ironing out QC in the meantime.
I went with tereamaster 424 pro. I don't care much about default software. We can selfhost everything with docker. And there is plenty of good soft available for everyone.
Im really inbetween the ugreen 4 bay pro and terramaster 4 bay pro for black friday sales. The ugreen looks way better build wuality and 10gb netwoeking is a nice future proof item. The lack of a native plaex app is a negative for me. I use a custom mini pc now with OMV or open media vault os and docker to run plex. Im not a docker fan. Making changes, rebuilding the kmage or stack. Manually looking up puid. Stuff breaking in image updates... its a pain... i would like a easier to use native plex app like on terramaster. But i also want an app that allows automatic photo syncs from my families phones... thst was not covered well in this video or others. What does ugreen and terramaster have for auto photo syncs from phones?
@@TheComando156 I have watched the video on how loud hard drives are. basic lesson i saw is don't have a nas in your main living space. I plan on putting mine in a cabinet in my basement.I was thinking of getting a server rack cabinet so i can easily put all of my nas network switch security camera nvr all in it.
Running alternative OS is another point too. TerraMaster can run almost anything you want, even the Synology DSM via ARC Loader. UGreen can run many things, but DSM i havent testet yet. ASUSTor i dont think can run anything beside it own OS.
Not true. You can install alternative OSs onto Asustor. They were the first company to say it was fine to do that and that it wouldn't invalidate the hardware warranty; you just wouldn't get any software support if you do. It was the deciding factor when I bought my AS-5404T last year. There are several videos on this channel on how to do it.
It definitely can even without the GPU. Mainline kernels don't seem to have support for the 10GbE implementation but we're working on finding the best way forwards.

deciding from a performance for budget point of view, the hard drives will define the rest. going with 4x 18TB recertified dual actuator mach2 drives, reusing 2 older m2 SSDs for caching, a ZFS architecture, would clearly be the way to go. either a) frankensteinian DIY with the latest Truenas scale using a usb 3.2 DAS JBOD subsystem and an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 16GB combined with two rare RTL8157 5Gbe USB LAN adapters or b) a Qnap TS-464-8G upgraded with a second 8GB stick and QuTS hero using port trunking and a 2.5 USB LAN adapter, assuming a decent lan switch is already in place. then it is clearly a decision of priorities, more options and a steeper learning curve versus an almost out-of-the-box experience with less tinkering.
if the 580 MB/s linear throughput is not suitable any more, there is still no need to upgrade the entire office/smarthome to power hungy 10GbaseT. get a isci subsystem for the video editing desk supporting >20GBps and take care of the project snapshots (time machine) and 3-2-1 by investing in a lifelong 5TB pcloud subscription for the final versions adding a neat ubiquity naspro in between.
1st always appreciate your videos!! Been in the market for a while now and ready to bite the bullet the question is how would you rate these three against a rack mount synology? Which rack mount would you recommend to compare these to? It will be for home use, the most will use it for, store my 600+ dvd/BR collection, photos, and possibly an NVR. I like the form factor of rack mount, and just picked up a few ubiquiti products to start, was also considering their UNAS but the Synology platform has more to offer rigth now. Thanks in advance!!
My ASUS AS7004T the screen started to flicker after 8 years but still works. Purchased the QNAP tvs h874x and the Ugreen DXP8800 for the hardware. Hopefully QNAP and Ugreen out last the ASUSTOR.

Is that the new Gen 3 one? I have had it (4 bay) on for about 2-3 weeks here and haven't overly noticed. Check your system temps. Also, is it flush with a wall?
@ yes it’s a new 4 bay. 4 12TB ironwolfs. No it’s not flush to a wall it’s sitting wide open on a desk. I would be interested to record a video and see if it sends loud or normal.

Are you sure it's the NAS and not the drives? I have an 1520 Synology NAS with those drives (also 12TB) and I find them annoyingly loud as well, so much so that I am thinking of getting an all SSD NAS to be always on and use that Synology NAS purely for backup. There are VM's and such running on that NAS so the disks are constantly busy and the rattle is very loud. I have recently gotten new drives for an older 8-bay NAS of mine and got Toshiba MG09 18TB drives because my old WD ones (4TB) were getting too old and those Toshiba drives are way quieter compared to those 12TB Seagates. Granted, that NAS is not on that often, but even when it's on the clicks are just less annoying. Those Toshiba drives are actually way quieter compared to those old WD Gold/Red Pro drives as well.
@ I was pretty sure it’s the drives and I couldn’t believe how loud they were. Like I said love the NAS itself, may just need to look at other drive options.
I absolutely love the zimacube! (It's in one of the best NAS of the year videos!), but it's very hard to objectively compare it to the turnkey NAS solutions in the market right now. It's availability is limited to their own site, and the OS (even for those looking at an UnRAID/TrueNAS install) still forms part of the price point and therefore it's a difficult solution for comparisons. no plex is a deal breaker for the ugreen for me. Literally it's the reason i'd buy a Nas so they need to sort that out. And honestly, i wouldn't consider something without the option to switch to jellyfin. So they got some hurdles. luckily i have plenty of time.
You forgot to mention a HUGE problem. Buying a NAS from Chinese owned companies is not a wise idea. Remember that there’s no such thing as a privately held company in China. If the Chinese government wants access to data, these companies HAVE to submit whether they like it or not. Remember after all what you will be storing on your NAS…

Got the F6-424 Max, throw 64 gigs of RAM, upgraded the internal USB stick and installed OpenMediaVaut, best decision I've made NAS-wise
Even though UA-cam's PT-BR dubbing is very artificial, the platform's intuition in covering other languages is interesting, great video.
I own two TerraMaster and I am happy with them, especially TOS 6, which has increased my confidence in TerraMaster.
