Ukrainian-born “bad boy of ballet” Sergei Polunin became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal dancer at age 19. But two years later - at the height of his success - he walked away from it all, resolving to give up dance entirely. Steven Cantor’s Dancer tracks the life of this iconoclastic virtuoso, from his prodigal beginnings in the Ukraine to his awe-inspiring performances in the U.K., Russia, and eventually the U.S., where he went viral after David LaChapelle filmed him dancing to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” Yet beyond celebrating the raw talent and wild ambition of Polunin, whose sights are now set on Hollywood, Dancer considers how wealth and success may not be enough when it comes to finding personal and professional identity.

Grew up same, but, less pressure. I think about what I lost when my father took me away from ballet. I had to mourn my loss. Thank you for your beauty Sergei.
More people need to know him. He needs to become a household name. Easily the best male ballet dancer of this young generation. We need to stop venerating trash and pay attention to real artistic talent borne of hard work. It makes me sad when kids my age will stan manufactured pop stars who had it all from the beginning :(
Well said, Faith. There seem to be so many people nowadays who are famous for being famous (or they have a modicum of talent at best). True artists like this are very rarely appreciated amongst the masses.

I watched this documentary and it is captivating. His whole life was ballet and then there was so much pressure on him to be the best and make things right. Beautiful but broken Sergey - it is his essence and he doesn’t shy away from who he is
I watched this documentary before I knew who Sergei Polunin was. Now he's one of my idols in the world of art.

Sergei asks "What's the point of it?" The point of it, my Dear, it that you are the best in the world. That is point. It means something to be the best. It means you are dedicated, it means you strive for perfection, you have great precision, you are artisitc, it means you and your family have sacrificed many things and it means you are the best dancer in the world. Most people have no idea what they want to do with themselves, al least you know. Apart from all that , you are so beautiful to watch, you give people so much pleasure!
I'm glad for the day that I found out that there is a Sergei Polunin in existent. I will watch this man dance until the end of time and never get tired or bored.

And Russian again. But there were other talented Russian ballet dancers. Not evryone was well advertised on the West. This is just a special national ballet school and the soule mixed together. The same are figure ice skaters are the best in Russia. But the football is a disaster though.

@veronikpavlova Actually, Sergei’s father’s parents are from Russia. Polunin is not a Ukrainian last name, it is more widespread in Russia.
He made me appreciate ballet and to see it differently. There is an important element to him one cannot learn or practice: his soul, feelings, passion is in his moves and that makes him stand out more and look more beautiful.
He sacrifice his whole life for his family... more than to the art.
A human who knows that family means everything. What a good minded man with such a kind soul.

I saw him perfome Romeo&Juliette in Verona, Italy. It was breathtaking. I'm going to see his performance of Rasputin this summer, I can't wait.
I was blown away. Speechless. And a lot of that beauty was fueled by pain. I wanted to hug his inner child. He just wanted love, family, mom and dad ❤️
I cannot bear the idea of someone so gifted and beautiful would leave dance! He is absolutely the most extraordinary dancer I've seen since Baryshnikov and Nureyev.
This movie trailer doesn't do justice to the film - it's much more than a story about a badboy dancer, it's about the genesis of a great dancer and a love letter to those (his family, his dance instructors) who helped him become. I only rented it on Amazon because I figured it would just be another... dance saga. It is so much more, paying homage to his parents' and grandmother's sacrifices to support whatever he needed to keep progressing. It is also very honest about his issues with them and that is very refreshing, but in the end? Everything comes together. Hope Polunin goes on to become an actor, no doubt he would flourish.

right so I'm so glad I came across this because I was struggling with the painting I'm working on, I was stuck, didn't know where I was going with it, kind of like a writer's block but with painting instead, happens a lot to me, and this, this mesmerising, beautiful piece of art popped up and I'm so thankful I just had the greatest Idea this inspired me so much I'm so thankful omg

I would give this man my life he’s absolutely amazing. I’m sat in shock everytime I see him. Male ballerinas especially, are made up of muscle and that muscle is just pure grace. It’s incomprehensible!

The way he moves is absolutely breathtaking...
There's something totally compelling about this man, who seems to live two quite different lives in one body. His photos as a child and as a young man, smooth-faced, hopeful, beautiful, supreme in his abilities, are so radically different from those of his later life that I find it impossible to reconcile the two. He's mesmerizing in performance, sometimes the Prince of Dance Without Care, other times the tortured, obsessive, self-hating, self-harming artist sentenced by some malign entity to dance himself to death. He is at once beautiful and dangerous, two personalities in one incredible body, but always graceful, always the performer without peer, always the focus of all eyes, always commanding - a balletic enigma, but always the supreme artist . . . and a candle burning at both ends.

I'm in awe of his abilities as a dancer and I'm sure there's more to his reasons for not continuing in his dance career I just don't fully accept that his parent's divorce was a big enough reason for the downward spiral he navigated up to this point and I hope that he finds his center again and remembers the reason why he started dancing in the first place.
