How to Paint Realistic Concrete
Вставка

- Concrete is found everywhere today and so at some point, you are bound to need to paint something to look like concrete. However, it is not a simple colour to replicate as concrete does change colour over time and according to what sand was used in the mix. Some concretes are warm, some are cooler so you do need to look at photos and try and match the colour as closely as possible to your area.
This video shows how to paint realistic concrete in three easy steps: paint, wash and pigment.
If you want to find out more about the track scale house that I'm building then check out this blog post: Railroad Track Scale Houses (www.kathymillatt.co.uk/blog/20... ).
The Real World
If you are ever stuck on what something really looks like and Google lets you down then I recommend checking out textures.com as it has everything you will ever need.
Materials
Tamiya Paint XF-55 Deck Tan
An enamel wash such as Mig Neutral
Pigments - any grey tone will do. I used a mix of black and grey but Mig do a pigment - Concrete PO26 which works well

Kathy, I always enjoy your presentations...simple, clear and straight forward. Thank you.
Thanks a lot!
This is perfect, because I got a bridge and trestle set and the big pillars bottom look like concrete on the box image so this helped me a lot
Glad I could help.
The result is incredibly true !!! I just love it !!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Thanks, Kathy - once again, a very informative video. For my concrete, I used a thin skim of Polyfilla, adding some colour during the mix. Concrete is often laid in separate sections, so I scratched in the straight-line 'joins' and some 'cracks' before the Polyfilla dried. Finally, I put a few bits of 'grass' in the joins and cracks. But I bet yours turns out better!
I love the idea of using a skim of plaster. Thus kit means I couldn't do that but plaster gives more variations on texture and colour. I bet yours looked great.
You and your projects are very comforting to watch. I like to enjoy them with a glass of wine. :)
Séamus MacGinnus I daren't get the wine out whilst modelling though! Glad you enjoy the videos.
@@KathyMillatt I'd love to see what you could achieve after a bottle of wine or two! I bet it'd still look way better than anything I could manage!
Very well done. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Amazing work. Thank you
Thanks!
Brilliant!!!!!!
Thanks a lot!
Nice video.
How does that knock-down spray booth work out? Does it come with a fan or separate?
you prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
@Xavier Amari Yup, have been using instaflixxer for years myself :D
Very handy for my pantherturm bunker diorama :)
Glad to help.
Could you tell me the exact color of paint I had a hard time hearing it video and thank you I've been looking for some concrete how to paint videos for a while
Hi Tim. Glad to help. It's Tamiya XF-55 Deck tan. There's a few others called "something" deck tan so I'd check the number.
Now that's interesting to know because I was looking at Humbrol's enamel Concrete and didn't like it because it had a greenish hue to it. I'll have to have a look at this once the lockdown is over and Hobbycraft reopens!
Try cutting some expansion joints into the concrete with a pointed blade.
That would work well in areas that had them.
Awesome! you make look it good qualify model, why not begin your any scale railroad layout. ;)
+Erik Wallace This has gone on my layout but it's easier to model it off the layout first.
What is the color of the enamel wash? Sorry Im really a color blinded person, thats my weakness tnx!
All the details are in the write up below the video.
Useful weathering tips. Thanks for sharing.
I'd never been able to get a concrete color I liked until about a week ago. Then I got lucky... My wife bought a some pale tan paint for the living room, but didn't like it (too yellow). Back at the store, she had them attempt to darken it a little (Then it looked a little grey). It looks almost like concrete, I thought. Under the lighting in my train room it still wasn't quite right. but when mixed with approximately an equal amount of a light gray I already had (Apple Barrel "granite gray"), it was perfect to my eye. Now I have a gallon of the stuff!
As for a concrete or stucco texture in O-scale. I've found that mixing talcum powder in the paint works very well (obviously it cannot be airbrushed in this state - oh wait... I don't have an airbrush anyway).
Excellent story! You'll have to build a lot of concrete to use all that up.
Yes, especially as mixing in the light gray doubles the volume, so if I mix it all up together, I'll have two gallons. Maybe I should get some small bottles and sell it on e-bay.
Actually I like the idea of mixing it as I go because that way each batch will be slightly different. I should still be able to get it close enough for touching up existing work (provided I weather it), but there will still be the subtle variations visible between different concrete jobs.
+mpeterll you're right, slight variations will be so much more realistic. You may be on to a winner selling to all your friends, if not eBay too!
How did you paint the shed part of that model?
The peeling paint video in the same series shows my method.
I love your accent
The xf-55 deck tan looks way more yellow in the video then in real life? The xf-55 i got here is more grayish... also the mig natural wash looks brown in the video, and the actual wash is almost colorless... the result looks nothing like the video...
White balance in lighting, both yours and mine, will have an impact
You need to shake the washes a lot but natural a tan dust colour.
I too enjoy your presentations, but don't you think you should use breathing protection...
I do now but this was a while ago. I’ve also upgraded my airbrush booth.
@@KathyMillatt Clever girl...
Now I do it full time the exposture is so much more. It’s important anyway.
