  • Welcome to Heather's Backyard (@Heathersbackyard). This week we went to tour the lovely Doe Castle in Co. Donegal, Ireland.
"Built in the 15th century, Doe Castle was a Mac Sweeney stronghold for over 200 years. The chiefs were buried in the nearby graveyard.
Sea surrounded the castle on three sides. A deep moat and a drawbridge protected it from attack by land. Gunners could fire in two directions from the top of the outer wall.
After the English took control in the 1690s the Mac Sweeneys chose to walk the roads of Donegal rather than submit to their new landlords.
A private residence until 1909 the Castle is now a national monument."
A Tragic Love Story "There is a legend that Aileen Mac Sweeney threw herself out of the highest window of the castle after her father murdered her lover Turlough O'Boyle, son of his bitter enemy."
