- Did you know that pigs, if disturbed during the birthing process, can EAT their offspring? Keepers must find a way to protect the piglets being born in the zoo without disturbing their mother.
The red river hog or bushpig, is a wild member of the pig family living in Africa, with most of its distribution in the Guinean and Congolian forests. It is rarely seen away from rainforests, and generally prefers areas near rivers or swamps.

I wonder if she was unhappy with the bedding, i thought they preferred dirt for birthing. She might have been trying to get the babies up and out of the straw as from the clips it looked like she was trying to un bury them
I've never seen pigs like that before. They're surprisingly pretty with their colors. I have an affection towards pigs as I used to raise pot belly pigs.
I helped look after pot bellies, such adorable creatures. I also had to look after some Gloucester Spots, they were quite dangerous especially the boars.
River hogs! There's some at the zoo I frequent and they're absolutely gorgeous.
I wonder if she was trying to remove the afterbirth because again these are wild animals and they normally try to cover up anything that leads to predators trailing looking for weak and young prey .
That was my immediate thought as well. She immediately up and it sort of cleans the piglet up at the same time.
also she appeared stress..as she is not happy with her surroundings! and did not want the same for her piglets.poor sow
Generally mammals eat the afterbirth. If they don’t, they’ll kick dust onto the baby to mask the dust. Elephants for example.
How could she be happy with that huge pig still nursing and bullying the others. So unnecessary!

She maybe was maybe worried about rolling on top of them while giving birth and made sure they were far enough away. Her moving them with her snout in a room full of straw bedding seems safer than her trying to pick them up in her mouth.

Generally it’s me. Mousonavitch Barrington Scrappinewski III at your service. I’ve saved 463 piglets from overzealous mothers since I began my work in 1997 and I will continue this calling while I draw breath. The hard part is the detective work; finding out which Sows are pregnant, where they live and if they’re prone to savaging their young. Forrest creatures have a form “no snitching” culture that many abide by so getting this info involves more than just bribery and threats; I have to have leverage on some, be willing to beat it out of others etc. Its a lot of work but the piglets deserve it. Sadly I can’t do this forever but while I can, I will.
I offer pig removal services starting at $10 per pig.
Hyenas will gladly do the job for them.

I read that some animals breed badly in captivity and mothers under the stress of captivity can turn on their young which they wouldn’t do in the wild, maybe you all should take that as a sign not to mess with nature?
They should have given her a shot of Oxytocin to increase her manternal proclivities. Also, raising other members of the sus sufra family is done millions of times each year. They have specially designed pens that, while allowing piglet access to the sow, keep the sow from harming the piglets. Also the two have vastly different temperature needs with sows needed to cool down and piglets needing very warm temperatures. Another reason why modern farrowing confines have different places for sow and piglet so that separate temperatures can be maintained.
They aren't domesticated pigs. They aren't even members of the sus genus. They are members of the potamochoerus genus and have vastly different needs than other suidae.

@@boxsterman77 They are more closely related to warthogs. Not sure if they can breed with domestic pigs.
@@boxsterman77Warthogs have 34 chromosomes while domestic pigs have 38. This difference is dramatic enough that I don’t believe they could interbreed. For context, donkeys and horses 62 and 64 chromosomes; mules receive 63.
Sounds like Australia. Can't help but notice on alot of these videos peoples teeth seem to be messed up pretty bad why is that.do they not have any kind of dental help there??
