FordTechMakuloco can you link the valve body removal/replacement videos?
Great information man. But why would you not upgrade to metal check balls? Did ford design it so if you did that it wouldn't work right?
It will be up Monday and I will update links to this video
Ford used rubber for a reason, I am not going to reengineer the trans.
FordTechMakuloco
That's true. Thanks for the reply and the great videos.
Ford sold 2.7 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2017....This guy should have at least that many subs.
Lol
This guy helped me through a whole timing job he is indeed awesome🫡
Thanks so much, I just completed my 8 check balls installation in about 3 hours with no lift. Yep one of them was smaller than the others and one had split into three pices. I was lucky to find all the small pieces, Your video made the job easy and cheap with the biggest expense being the fluid.. The transmission now shifts like new, with more power to the wheels. Past symptons were fast shifting along with 1st and 2nd gears trying to engage at the same time. Thanks again and glad it is fixed!
Your tutorials are the greatest. Thank you. My '04 3v 5.4 Triton lost Overdrive at 140,000 miles. I'm re-watching your 4R70E vids to get the guts to drop the valve body.
This just confirmed my problem with my 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton. She's got 276,000 miles and had the transmission valve body replaced about two years ago by a local shop that's been around for many years. It just started the very low idle at a stop, but comes back to normal idle if I put it in Neutral. Time to give that shop a call... Thank you FordTechMakuloco!
I always switch out the metal check balls, used in the GM Trans such as the 4L60/65/70E, with Sonnax Torlon Check Balls. They are some type of plastic that is very strong. Problem with the metal check balls is they pound the separator plate and embed themselves into the plate causing the clutches to burn, or not shift. I also like to use TransGo Hardened Separator Plates whenever possible. Much stronger plate, as well as modified holes for better shifting for longevity.
Thanks for this video! Did this on my 2009 Grand marquis LS with 60k on it. You described the symptoms perfectly and with this video I was able to complete the repair myself. This video saved me $2,200. The transmission shop wanted to sell me a rebuilt transmission.
NICE!!
Can this be done to fix intermediate slipping from 1st-2nd and very slow to engage in D from park? I have a 4r75w
Your the goat my 04 f150 was passed down from my papa then my dad and now me I’ve had it for 4 years now I I plan on keeping it forever your videos are so helpful thank you so much sir.
You saved me over 2k. I cant thank you enough for your honesty
You are a gift to the working man Brian...thx for the heads up....
Oh.... I almost forgot! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! PRICELESS INFORMATION!!!! I WISH ALL MECHANICS WERE HONEST LIKE YOU!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!!
Absolutely priceless. Really. It is an easy fix, but I never would have contemplated it without your clear demonstration here (and your other 4th gear video involving the valve body). I just did this to my 2007 f150. My #7 ball was split and lodged in the plate. I had the 'sense' to check the overdrive accumulator snap ring, which had both ears...(but, I actually know that now)
I checked out some other videos and put some sonnax upgades, a new plate and gaskets. (the 'since you're in here' effect)
And, of course, you're right about the thing driving like new. I'm blown away and feel like a genius. I spent maybe three hundred for everything - including fluid/filter. Thanks so much! You have no idea.
effin' sweet dude...
Just put new valve body gasket and rubber check valves my truck shift great now. Thanks for the awesome videos. My truck shifted thru all the gears by 40mph and almost dies at stop. Thanks again got told I need a transmission lol.
You Sir are incredible!!!!
You truly care about your customers and the fellow man.
Just a wealth of knowledge who isn't insecure about sharing it due to the paranoid syndrome of "putting you out of work"
You are awesome! Learned so much from you too and saved thousands of dollars watching your videos. Did a timing job on my 5.4 triton watching your video. Keep up the great work!!
Steel balls over time hammer the plate. I use the 4R100 balls. Never had an issue. Great videos dude..
Just did this job in our shop today. Just FYI, it took 11 quarts of Merc V to fill up. Dry spec. is 13 quarts on complete overhaul. Removing valve body must allow everything except lower half of convertor to drain.
That is around what I experienced when refilling this one, though it sat for almost 2 days draining waiting on parts.
Really appreciate the time you put into the information you’ve given in your videos. I fixed my 2008 F150 XLT (140k) yesterday, new wheel bearings, new brakes and rotors, the transmission check balls and flushed fluid new gaskets and filter. Your videos gave me the confidence to take on this challenge. Truck is running so smooth I barely feel the shifting of the gears. Not to mention the money I save thanks and keep up the hard work
Hi - Was your servo snap ring broken when you took the transmission valve cover off? If so, how did you put the servo back in as FordTech uses a special tool to put it back in (a different video). Did putting in the new transmission balls fix the shifting issues? My 2008F150 has a difficult time going into 1st gear and also the OD light flashes and Trans Fault light comes on every time I drive. Thanks
safarila1 what Was the problem with it sr?
safarila1 mine was not broken but I did replace the ring for good measure. I use a jack to keep the servo in place so I didn’t replace it. I was lucky everything was very clean almost no metal dust on the magnet and the fluids looks awesome for not being flushed ever I’m pretty sure. The manufacturers plug was still in the pan. I did however replace all the check balls and they where due. It was like night and day once I got out on the open highway very smooth and lots of power.
I’m having no reverse but engages. Any similarity.
Best video yet had mine rebuilt lost 4th gear and when you slow down to turn into a parking lot the engine tries to stall getting down to about 400rpm causing very hard steering!!! I thought the pwr steering pump was going out but from all the research this video has shown me all my problems are coming from the tranny!!!!! This video needs to be widely shared @@!!!
Thanks for letting us know. Once again you are a huge help for shade tree mechanics everywhere.
Steel checkballs have the tendency to dig in to the separator plate. I have seen it many many times in different trannys. A plastic or composite ball do not do that and it is also lighter and can move/seal quicker than steel. Rubber seal great but obviously vear. I vould stick to plastic or rubber anyway
The new ones are not rubber. Their reinforced nylon. Very hard to wear out...
Thank you Makuloco! Just had a customer vehicle come in with this problem but it is intermittent and has no codes, Trans was recently serviced and it drives great other than the occasional issue in 2nd gear. Going to pull the valve body and take a look.
I an still trying to figure out who keeps thumbs downing Brian’s videos. Must be some competition or manufacturer fanboys 😆. Thanks for the great videos. Keep em coming.
Competition I’m sure or people that want quick to the point videos only. In this line of work attention to detail is important though.
I have ALL of these symptoms in my 94 Mustang GT AODE. Thanks for the tip!
The old hot dog problem, hot dogs are in ten packs and buns are in eight packs. It's a government plot.
Lol
the Russians did it.........
Overall after the upgrades is the transmission dependable?
Can steel balls be substituted for the rubber ones?
Aloha's Bruddah. YOUR VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS TOP SHELF !! Thanks Huge! Always know that when I watch any video you create that is guaranteed to be a Really Helpful vid that will contain Top Shelf, Simple To Understand repair procedures and be an Informative video info. Also, I absolutely can't wait for your next videos. Hope your next vid has those kool it too has animation sounds when it shifts into gear ;)
Any specific reason you replace them with new rubber balls? Wouldn't it be better to just install metal balls and never have the issue again?
No they are hard on the plates.
As much as I love my Fords I really wish they'd get their shit together in the transmission department
Awesome video! I think this is exactly what's going on in my 05 E150. Started stalling when shifting into 2nd from park, like the torque converter is engaged. Lugs way down shifting into 2nd when letting it coast into gear. And surges when coming to a stop. Guess I know what I'll be doing soon. This problem has been driving me insane trying to solve it. Thanks for the video!
@W D this indeed did turn out to be my issue for what it's worth
FordTechMakuloco I have a '14 F-150 5.0 4x4 that has a similar problem. It has 59k miles, barely within powertrain warranty, so I took it to my local dealer in June. They had my truck for 7 weeks, they overhauled the trans with new planetaries, clutches, valve body, and torque converter and they put in a new transfer case as well. When I got my truck back, I drove off the lot, around the block, and back into the service department because the problem was still there. Their response was to wait 1500 miles for the adaptive learning to take effect.
The problem is the 2-3 upshift during any rate of acceleration, right after the upshift the engine tone drastically changes, like it is lugging very hard then immediately shifts to 4th, completely knocking the engine out of its power band. Initially I thought a clutch pack went bad but could it have to do with the engine's variable valve timing? Accelerating to highway speed takes twice as long now.
Thanks Brian for sharing your vast knowledge!
That was a short sweet and a very great learning experience thank you! your videos is always are great and helpful that's totally appreciate them! You are the absolute best!
Amazing! Those symptoms have been haunting me for months. Can't wait to see your full video. When that's posted can you give some pointers for us suckers with 2004 F-150 trucks that don't have transmission dipsticks? How can we keep an eye on our ATF and fill it properly? If anyone can help it's you!
I'm waiting for auto manufacturers to start including rubber lifters in the engine ... 🤯
Great tip - thanks! 👍
Lol...Or rubber pistons...They'll just bounce up and down.
🤣
shhh. Don't give them any ideas!
I know, right? lol
What blows my mind is they market so people believe it's better. They say fuel efficient or environmentally friendly its crap. The real reason it's cheap and do you see auto prices dropping. Fires me up thinking about it. It's sad when cars are barely making 150k
Thank you. I am keeping a record of “ Points of Correction “ for my 2005 F 150. Instead of buying a new truck , I have decided to properly Remanufacture the one I own. Please consider offering an “ Update / Remanufacture” package for F150 owners. It would be nice to drop it off, pick it up a few weeks later with all the corrections made.
Thank you for this valuable information.
I guess I will continue on with my stick shift, manual transmissions.
We watch your video in Russia. thanks for the good content.
Lol🤣
Your videos are life savers! Thanks and god bless
My F150 pulls really well and then falls on its face in 2nd gear. I wonder if this is my problem? I'll have to check this and see if it helps. Thanks again Brian. BTW, I already had to replace the snap ring that broke and caused me to lose overdrive. Very common problem on these trucks. A $2 snap ring has caused a lot of people to pay a lot of money for an unnecessary rebuild.
Dude this is huge. I'm looking forward to the video where you pull this valve body out. I have an 05 expy that has the rapid shift thing and it drives me crazy
Monday 6am it will be out.
FordTechMakuloco keep up the good work! Your channel is a goldmine of information!
ua-cam.com/video/Ikk56cIHL_g/v-deo.html
Thumbs up Brian!
Thanks for sharing. I have had a problem with not down shifting at stop signs.
First! Great info, thank you! That's alot of check balls lol
Check separator plate for cracks.
Its hard to believe how cheap manufacturers can get. Not using steel balls, ridiculous. Thanks for the info Brian.
Replacement part means more money with servicing/ Buy a new vehicle.
Plastic balls are common also in industrial pumps, in some of the most expensive ones. If anything, steel makes replacements more expensive, being plastic doesn't necessarily mean "trash"
Plastic just means it's lighter than metal and makes the car more fuel efficient, yeah right. LMAO
@@ozzstars_cars Thats bullshit for small components tho
+Spaniardchris well that's what the car manufacturers say the reason they use plastic valve covers and intake manifolds.... lightweight and fuel efficient my ass!! hahahaha
Great stuff as always. But please do some videos on the Powershift gearboxes, especially the wet clutch version. Software/firmware tricks and hints, and well as how to make it do a re-learn and calibration. Also anything on oil change etc...
Just any information you have on these boxes would be great!
those are power shit transmissions if you check out he already has a couple of videos on them. since you say wet clutch i'll assume you are from across some pond. i know the indonesian and australian markets use them after the debockle that made these ford subsidiarys eat crow. possibly europeans too . to my knowledge (being admittedly limited ) i am unaware that wet cluched powershifts have been used in the americas. great idea in theory but an excercise in frustration on implementation.
Good morning... I might need this some day.. thanks..
Hello. Thanks a lot for your very useful videos. I recently bought a 2008 F-150 STX 4x4, 4.6 engine, transmission code Q (4R75E I think). It shifts weird, like no clear difference between gears. Truck has 120k miles, very well taken care off. I was thinking about changing all the fluid and the filter when I stumbled with this video. Question: How difficult is this to do with the transmission on the truck? I rebuilt a few engines and manual transmissions, but never took apart an automatic one (replaced fluid and filters on several though). Thanks again!
Very informative, thank you!
You are a genius! Wow! Thank you so much for the video! 🤜🤛
OMG... Now I have to worry about rubber balls in my transmission as well as my 5.4L, 3-V timing setup in my 2004 F150! :(
yep, ship that thing off like I did with my 2004 F-150 cam phaser clunking beast. :D such a shame too, they are actually kinda nice pickup trucks.
Nice!! You gotta wonder what the engineers were thinkin'....LOL (rubber balls)... :-)
So, can you replace those rubber check balls with steel ones?
Would that cause a slow loss of reverse?
What if I didn't find any broken snap ring or worn out looking balls? I was really hoping to find a worn out ball! My issue was a low power issue in low gears as well. Thanks!
My number 7 check ball was stuck in one of the holes on the plate
Great video. Can you tell me why the flow from tranny to a cooler is so weak? I have the same tranny on my e350 and I performed a flow test directly from tranny to an empty bottle. So I got one quart in 2 minutes which is bad sign. But it shifts like it should and there is no codes or issues except high working temp. Thanks.
I'm planning on doing the check ball replacement this summer. I have this problem where the transmission sometimes won't disengage while braking. It powers the truck forward and I have to cut the engine before I have an accident. Any idea what that might be?
Your right but if you are overhauling the trans you are going to replace the servo
Great video thanks for the info! Is it possible to get steel check ball replacements somewhere?
Or would that be bad, would it wear the aluminum then?
What complete transmission rebuild kit would you recommend for the 4r75e and could you do a complete rebuild video thank you so much
Im working on a 2007 f150 5.4 liter and im worried the 89 lbs torque on the bolts on the transmission cylinder body will strip out that aluminum body.
Makuloco, great videos, ive done timing jobs from watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Question i have a 4r75e code po720, replaced that sensor with original part. Still having same issue. When taking off transmission slipping slight vibration coming from transmission od light flashing but if i bring it up to 45-50 mph seems to drive ok. Do you think transmission is shot or it can be these check balls? Transmission fluid n filter replaced last year color still red no burn smells
Having same issue here, what was the problem or how you fixed?
I have a crown vic ... overdrive light started flashing after testing hard and once and a while on test drive 1st gear launches light I pressed in a clutch pedal on a standard .. tune-up done and engine running smooth notice when gas pedal released I can feel here down shifting back and forth ... any help would be great ...one youtuber to another
Thanks for the great videos man, you should do vlogs!
Stupid question, would it be possible to replace the rubber balls with metal check balls?
Better to get the Sonnax imidized plastic checkballs?
Do you recommend reman or rebuilt transmission?
I think Hiram Gutierrez recommends Chrysler check balls.
Can't you use the steel balls to replace the rubber ones :)
Rob Houg that's what I would do.... or the Teflon ones
Truer are no more steel balls in the engineering department, lol
Todd Kelley lol... truth
Steel balls would cause more damage to the plate .. it's better to replace the balls than a whole plate .. it makes perfect sense
I am just wondering if you could upgrade then balls to a steel or aluminum ball just wondering this helped me out alot
we have a 4r70w in a 96 town car, at 25-35 mph the car has a shake or a shudder feel to it, doesnt shift soft anymore and at a stop, going from park to drive or reverse it slams into gear. what might cause that with this transmission?
can you buy steel ball bearings to fix the problem?
Great video thank you for sharing
Spot on tip! Thank you Brian
Cool video ford tech
Hello, I have a 4r75w and the turbine is new, in reverse it is strong and the oil pressure is low and the sepertin is new, and it does not go forwards,,,, unless its wheels are up in the air there if it has power the wheels
Your amazing!
Hey thanks for all the great videos! Do you recommend these shift improvement kits that they sell on rock auto?
Any suggestions for reliable replacement transmissions? Mine's reverse only... LOL
I sure appreciate the video I'm Good at wrenching on cars but when it comes to an automatic transmission they scare the hell out of me If I lose or one of those balls go I know it's not gonna work gonna work thanks for the video it's a lot of important stuff I'm gonna try to see what the hell happens thank you
I lost 1st and reverse gear in my 2005 f-150 4x4. What could be the cause of this problem?
Hello I have a 1970 thunderbird that will not go into overdrive . Any advice appreciated
I appreciate your video. my 2010 4.6 F150xl is like your video. It only stalls out when you put it in 2nd gear and a oil can comes on the dash It drives and runs great except the wrench light comes on as soon as you hit second gear. know any good mechanics in NC? Thanks so much
Good information thanks
Thanks for the video. Could you advise me, i am frustrated. My 4r75e on 2006 e350 van has weak volume in cooler lines so transmission overheats extremely fast. Fluid is not coming fast directly out ports. I put new lines, got new filter, new fluid and even a cooler. But still no success. One quart test showed that fluid fills the bottle in 5 minutes not 30-40 seconds. And after all transmission shifts great in all gears. All inwant to know is what happened to a pressure in cooler lines. Thanks in advance!
Off topic/ I changed tranny fluid but now totally not changing gears, I was wondering if I could put a 2014 tranny on a 2010 4 speed 4.6l, or can I put an even newer transmission on it that’s compatible?? My truck has over 200k miles and was slipping in 4th gear when I decided to change the filter and fluid, just putting it out there, not sure whether to keep it or junk it, engine is really smooth, no check engine no vibration
AWESOME video my guy, you know your stuff! I have been experiencing these problems, but then I got some new symptoms today. Today when I went into reverse and it was jerking / sticking while backing up. Go to pull forward and does same thing. Vehicle rolls freely in neutral. There is a whining noise present in park and neutral, but goes away when any gear is applied. Could this be valve body/ check ball related?
My truck does the same, did you get this figured out?
Yeah I have a 04 2v f150 4.6. Just lost 3rd, 4th and overdrive. But it has 250,000 on original Tran parts so I’m hoping it’s just snap rings or check valve. Any advice would be great . Thanks for video
when you change a check balls did you replace the small one number 7 a biger one ??
Great info buddy thank you so much.
Would that also destroy a transmission if you kept driving it like that?
Hiram Guittierez or Automatic Transmission covers this problem on a GM rebuild and actually uses Chrysler updated check balls in GMs.
Nice that guy is great to watch
Great video very valuable information thanks
I have a 04 Ford F-150 I gave the VIN number to four they say I got the 4r70e but I'll call everybody nobody has a rebuild kit for it 4r70w r 4r75e what do I do.. please can anybody help me out thank you.
Thanks for your videos! God bless you!
Hey FordTechMakuloco,
can you give tips to diagnose a transmission shift concern? How can I identify that the problem is in the valve body or that the problem is a clutchpack? And thanks for the great videos👍🏻
Could this cause the hard clunk when it downshifts? Wish you had a shop near me, 2004 new body style 4.6 4x4
Any videos regarding code p0720? I have a 2004 Mercury Monterey that is throwing two codes p0720 and p0722. Any videos on how to replace the output speed sensor?
