you should try THESE FISH with TURTLES (more turtle tankmates)

You should try these fish with turtles!! Here are some more turtle tankmates that you could try keeping with a turtle. Keep in mind that keeping turtles and fish together is not guaranteed to work out, so proceed with vigilance and pick fish that are fast, agile, and not easily bullied! My suggestions include rasboras, corydoras, plecos, and more. As always, do additional research on the fish species you're interested in getting and make sure that they will thrive in the environment you are already providing for your turtle.

Remember that you always have to account for the additional bioload of the fish and provide proper care for them as well! It’s not guaranteed that these will work, but choosing fish that are faster, more agile, and less likely to bullied increases your chances of success…more decorations and hiding spots also improve chances of survival!
Thanks!
Love your vids!
Hi! - I submitted my tank ,but forgot to add that it’s actually a redesign and I just recently did it - I really hope you like it! keep up the awesome content :)
I put minnows in my turtle tank intended for food. Turns out he wanted friends instead so now I have a school of minnows chilling in his tank.
same i just put minnows in for my 2 turtles and they have ate maybe 5 out of 36
I have a red eared slider that I got as a temporary resident in my home. One year later he is still here so I've been looking into really decking out his tank with plants and fish to make it a lot more beautiful and functional. I never wanted to spend a ton of money on him since I wasn't sure if he was going to stay with me ( he was supposed to be a temporary foster so I kept his tank pretty sparse and sterile), but now I'm committed to just having him until he passes and giving him a super good life. All this to say: thank you because your videos have helped a ton! Can't wait to get him some friends and a more naturalistic home.
I’m in the exact same boat! I got a red eared slider and I thought I’d only have him temporarily but decided that this would be his forever home so I’ve since upgraded him from a 30 gallon to a 75 gallon tank and looking to add a ton of new decorations, plants, friends (fish) and a nicer basking area. I’ve fallen in love with the little guy 🥰
that's so amazing that you're planning to provide for him for a long, long time. I'm really glad to hear that the videos have helped :)
@@emilybueckert108 haha I don’t have the funds to upgrade his tank size right now but I’ll be upgrading everything else. He’s pretty stunted as he came to me as a five year old who lived in a ten gallon tank his whole life with a regular incandescent bulb as a heat and UV source so I think he’s going to be the size he is for the rest of his life. He absolutely hates me but I love his lil angry face and I’m gonna make him hate me in luxury at least. 😤
@@cuteandspookycritters8691 haha well I’m glad to hear that his little angry self will have a much better life! My little guy is pretty chill and lets me handle him without ever trying to bite me. And the only reason I was able to upgrade his tank was because I got a really good deal on it. He’s pretty lazy, but that could be because I don’t think he’s had much space to swim before. The previous owners had him in pretty shallow water in the 30 gallon and I heard that the people they got him from only had a 10 gallon for him (he was fully grown by the time the last owners had him) I’m really hoping he’ll get used to the space and be a bit more active yet. What’s your turtle’s name? My little guy is Fletcher 🐢❤️
My mother had a pleco when I was little, she loved it so much and raised it from a very small size. She’d buy a bigger tank every time it got bigger until we had over 200 gallon tank for it and it was about 20 inches big. It died I’m assuming of old age, she had it for years over 10 years. It definitely was fun having and fairly easy to take care of.
that's crazy huge! you def have to be aware of how big theyre gonna get 🥲
Lol yeah the basic Plecos continue to grow & have no predators like Goldfish - they are hardy, but don’t have a grow size!
It's absolutely lovely that your mom was willing to upgrade as the pleco grew. That's so rare.
@@blackosprey2219 agreed, I remember the day it died she cried so bad and refuses to buy another due to the heart ache
I have 2 Red Eared Sliders both about 5 inches long in a 55 gallon tank and they get along with an older 5 inch Goldfish and 3 smaller common plecos. The plecos do sometimes clean the turtle's shells and they seem to like it. There has been no damage and I monitor it weekly. Everyone seems happy
If everyone seems happy that’s good. But I’d highly suggest getting a larger tank considering you have two red eared sliders in one tank. Not to mention a large fish in there as well
glad that it's working out for you...sounds like a heavy bioload though so hope you have a good filtration system ;)
3:28 also if you do plan on getting a Pleco, they do produce a lot of waste. I would say get a very large or get another filter if you plan on getting a Pleco.
it's true! they have a heavy bioload and while they eat algae, they poop more than they clean xD
@@TheTurtleGirl yup. Still thinking of getting one even if the waste. I’ll probably get a sponge filter to get that
Also! Be careful - peopke buy little Plecos & don’t realize they keep growing a eat whatever fits in their mouth. They have “designer” plecos that don’t get too big. Corys & Otos & Loaches are smaller CUC (Clean Up Crew)… there’s no perfect CUC for all tanks… & some of them do produce waste - you should make sure they do the job you want them to do! They all have different jobs… even just looking at shrimp all different shrimp have different “jobs”.
lol but so many ppl come back with Plecos & Oscars & I’m like…… yeah when I said they won’t live in a 10G forever I wasn’t joking 😂
I hav an angelfish, a rosaline shark, and feeder minnows in my sideneck tank. All thriving happily so far the turtle nips every now and then
I just got two albino corys, never had any other animals with her. She ate one and the other is hiding. I never thought she was aggressive but now looking back on it, I definitely overlooked the fact that she would always chase her food around the tank and would sneak up on it😂. Hoping to get a new species soon that can hopefully do something to defined itself😂.
Turtle girl, you are amazing.
Recently I inherited two sliders (one of which was deformed due to lack of light, I believe) and have put them both in a 100 gallon tank. They now have a dry basking area with both lights, nice plants, and plenty of space. I admit, I fed them ten goldfish before you told me not to. Nevertheless, because of you and a few other resources, I’ve had all my questions answered as well as questions I didn’t know that I had.
In the meantime, I hope my turtles are living happier than before. My current endeavor is upgrading their filter to a 200-gallon canister filter.
My plecos always stick to my turtles back, but they don't harm him. The only concern i have about plecos is that my turtle ate a few of them because they aren't too fast
My daughter has a pleco in her turtle tank that has an African side neck and a Mississippi map and I have witnessed the pleco and the turtles playing with each other and the pleco will suck on their shells and the turtles don't seem to mind it. She has tried to keep a pleco in her tank that has a spiny softshell but it ate it both times she tried so she has since stopped buying them for that tank. She also has guppies in both tanks. They do very well in there.
I have been watching your video’s for sooooo long, and you have helped me so much with taking care of my turtle Shelly! I will definitely try some of these fish with my turtle so this video is really helpful! You always have such fun videos and your passion for turtles has spread on to all your now 100k subs but especially me, and frankly, I’am surprised you haven’t reached 100millon subs 😄! I can’t wait to see more of your videos!
aw thank you so much Holly! appreciate the support!
I would like to have turtles again, I used to have them in Scotland before I moved to Norway, here for many years they had a reptile ban but I think turtles might be ok again.
that would be awesome! thanks for watching Mark :)
Another good pleco is the clown pleco. They stay relatively small. This was a great video and great fish options for turtle tanks. I might get some rasboras like you have. 👍🏼🐢
neat suggestion!! I'll have to check them out!
I have a question
How many gallons is that tank in your background with the platys
Lots of these fish contain thiaminase like the minnows, catfish, and plecos. Though they may be shifty, it may be best not to add and have things like ghost shrimp or some snails
that's a possible concern, sure! I'd say that if they are eaten infrequently, then it's probably fine. Or if you know that your turtle is prone to eating tankmates, then yes, avoid them ;)
I have a musk turtle, pink bellied sideneck and a painted turtle and I keep guppies with them and they don’t chase or eat them at all :) guppies are also fast.
That's awesome! glad it works out for you!
My 2 yearling painted turtles ate all my cory catfish and 1 small pleco
I have a RES that is 6 inches long, living in a 75 gallon tank, which takes mate would fit for my turtle to live with
I tried small feeder goldfish, then medium. Then I tried getting a few male and female guppies, a small bristle nose, and a redfin shark. The feeders didn't last more than a week. The guppies didn't last long at all, maybe a couple days. The Pleco wasn't far behind. The redfin has been in there for 1.5 years. It was a little aggressive towards the other fish so I'm assuming it's too much trouble for the turtle to catch. It's a now 2 year old painted turtle. I also added about 15 medium fishing minnows last winter. It ate one every couple days except one that lasted over a year. Finally disappeared a few weeks ago
some turtles are just bent on eating any tankmates you try xD
Nice video. I want chilly rasborras for my turtle tank. Question, how do you clean the substrate/sand of your turtles tanks?
with a gravel vac/aquarium siphon!
My red eared slider turtle is about 3 inches and I am not sure if I should try but I really want fish again and no room another aquarium.
Do you think a silver arowana 12" could live with a hatchling pink slider turtle in a 210 gallon?
Never had a pleco on my turtle but a snail will hitch a ride
they will xD
You're awesome and smart. Thanks for the useful info !
thank you so much :D
If anyone has recommendations, I am specifically looking for fish to go with a turtle tank that 1) Will sift through the sand, so I don't have to stir it around as much, and 2) separately, an algae eater that does not get very big?
Loved that you spoke about what you know galaxy are my fave 😢❤
I have gold barbs with my Mississippi map turtle and have had no issues. Also black neons.
Awesome! Gold barbs are cool!!
My pleco sometimes sucks on my Albino RES shell. It is a true thing lol!
Turtle girl I’m a 57-year old man have to say you are awesome keep up good work.
My red eared slider eats EVERYTHING!!! I BOUGHT 5 minnows and she ate them all within 2 mins at most. I can't even put real plants in her tank cuz she eats that to. I rescued her from someone who only gave her food once a month and she had not uvb or heat. So I think she's so worried about not getting more food that eats EVERYTHING in sight. It's frustrating
@Super Fun Friends oh wow! Apparently it's now common then I thought. I'm glad u rescued yours!!
that's too bad :( sliders are one of those that can be really brutal when it comes to tankmates xD
I definitely would not recommend adding a pleco. You say you've never personally seen the damage they can do, but I have. Also, you shouldn't have to personally see the damage before taking the advice to not house them together. I've seen where they've bitten off chunks of fish including eyeballs, lower jaws, etc; The fish they attacked didn't survive. The will latch onto a turtles shell and can damage it. There's also the danger of the turtle eating it and possibly causing internal injuries, as plecos have many spiny parts on them. I've seen a video of a pleco almost drowning a turtle as well. **corydoras also have spiny parts on them and aren't recommend to be housed with anything that can potentially eat them.
thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Just be cautions about the plecostamus, they're toxic and produce a LOT of waste. As long as you have a strong filter though and just clean it regularly it should be fine.
Can trace minerals be added to the water
Please do not keep Cory Cats in a turtle tanks!
I had a snapper years ago named Drake.
At one point I had a dwarf cory cat in his tank as the clean up crew. Drake bit on the fish one day, and spit it out. Drake had impaired sight in one eye and lost tissue on the same side of his beak. Drake didn't eat as well for a couple weeks, but after a few months he had recovered. His sight came back and the tissue eventually regrew on his beak. The catfish survived the attempted eating.. but I couldn't leave it in the tank after that.
Note: snappers often bite from fear. Drake was tame for me; meaning he acted predictably, I didn't startle him if humanly possible, and he was never aggressive with me. I also paid very close attention to his body posture and how he held his eyes when ever I interacted with him.
Some cories are thought to be venomous, though this hasn't been confirmed yet.
Can I ask what is the size of your current tank, also for Hoku and the other turtles, why dont you have a tub like Rubbermaid 150 gallon for instance?
I really want to get a rubbermaid tub, but I am considering the aesthetic and being able to check they ok, as opposed to them being hidden in the tank, but also me not being able to check on them, or see if they are eating well, check shell health etc.
My current two turtles tanks are 40 gallon and 75, respectively. I've always just preferred fish tanks, plus given my current living situation it's much easier to have space for a glass aquarium vs a tub! I think tubs are great though, many many people use them with success. See DanTheTurtleMan, for instance! It's honestly more natural for them to be kept in a tub type setup.
@@TheTurtleGirl I watched a few of his videos, and a lot of yours, I see you are such an avid turtle lover too. So I always wondered why knowing the pros and cons, you still go for Glass over tubs. We do share a similar opinion but as i have an balcony, or sundeck, back porch in my apartment which is multistory block. I was thinking to either put the tub outside on the balcony or just keep the glass and put it on a rack, as I have my tank on carpet floor at the moment but I think outside would be better for them in tub or tank, as rack also means i can get a canister filter too. Thanks a million for the reply
Most of my fish are cichlids will this be ok with diamond back turtle?, great video 👍🏻
I have a question, what kind of live plants could I get that are safe for turtles to eat? I have two yellow bellied sliders
Water sprite, hornwort, java fern, vallisneria are a few that come to mind
Just wondering, how would you do water changes with fish, idk how that would really work?
Watch out for the fish.
I usually put them in a spare 10 gallon tank while I’m deep cleaning or water change.
You just avoid them with the gravel vac/aquarium siphon haha. they usually swim away and I've never ever had to remove them.
Thanks! I am looking for some turtle tank mates for my baby turtle!
glad it could help!
Hi the turtle girl I was scrolling through your videos and I'm going to upgrade my turtle tank to a 40 gallon and I was wondering what desk like table would you recommend to get for a 40 gallon tank?
Petsmart has a couple of 55 gallon tank stands that work well for 40 gallon breeder tanks, they’re sturdy and nice looking. I have two of them. There is a metal stand made for 40 gallon breeder tanks but a lot of reviewers say that the top needs to be modified slightly to make sure the tank is completely level. Some reviewers have posted instructions in their reviews and there might be some videos on here with instructions. I think the turtle girl mentions it in one of her videos but I don’t remember which one. One thing to note is a lot of reviewers say the metal one might not be the best choice if you have cats or small kids because it’s not as sturdy as a cabinet-style stand.
after using racks for a while...I'd say I'd probably go with just a dedicated aquarium stand that you can but at the pet store.
I have a turtle tank full of different species of fish, which has been very successful. Successful as in there have been no heavy casualties and no high nitrates. A fish I highly recommend are blood parrots. These fish are amazing and have their own little personalities.
that's awesome! what other fish do you have? I agree that blood parrots are awesome!
@@TheTurtleGirl I’ve got a lot lol. Harlequin Rasboras, Zebra Danios, Loaches, a Gourami, Cherry Barbs, Black Ruby Tiger Barbs, and a Siamese flying fox. Before you say it, yes it’s overstocked, but the Nitrate levels are low thanks to the plants and the community remains to be very peaceful. I go weeks, even months without a water change and I test the water weekly.
@@monwhopperdopy1973 that's amazing!! gouramis are one of my favorites
@@TheTurtleGirl yup, they’re amazing and unique species of fish. I think I’ve got a Trichopodus in mine, not sure. I’ve posted my tank for a tank review to see what you think. Look for the name “Keanu”. That’s my turtles name

PLEASE HELP! I have a huge 6+ heavy painted back turtle. I can’t find a basking dock for her, she’s too big. What do you recommend? Do I build one????
an eggcrate basking area sounds like it would do the trick!
I have an fx4 filter , water is clear but smells like eggs?Thank you
Hey Turtle Girl, I need your help ASAP. (Not in a mean way.) So, I have this turtle named Shelly, and I don't know what to do about her. She started to stay in her above basking area around after Christmas time and she will not get out of their. I've been trying to do research, but its getting me no where. I've cleaned her tank several times, tried to force her out but she ALWAYS just goes back in there, and all shes been doing has been sleeping. I don't know if i'm doing anything wrong but, I don't know what to do anymore.
she might need to lay eggs
@@Consoul909 Thanks for the info but shes like almost 2 so idk but thanks for the feedback!
@Super Fun Friends Well, she did come out on her own so maybe she is It was just odd to me how long its been going on for
hmm...what's the temp difference between the basking area and the water? Could have something to do with that. Or maybe it has something to do with brumation/hibernation or even egg laying... I wouldn't really know though, sorry!
@@TheTurtleGirl No no its okay, plus that could be it because i have a 40 gallon tank and i think i have a heater for like a 10 gallon tank... I'll try and get one that's proper to the gallon of the tank. Thank you so much!! P.S. -I've had this big huge algae problem recently. Im not sure if its cause how cold it is or if i should do i deep DEEP clean of the tank :/
am a new turtle owner and your vidio is really really helpfull for me. tnks turtle girl. 😊😊
but i have a question - can i add artificial colourfull rocks in my turtle tank? pls reply
Rocks or sand can be used. Gravel rocks might impact their gut if swallowed.
I wouldn't use colored gravel...

I have a 2 year, old Australian Murray river turtle. Do you think it is a good idea having tank mates for him? I haven’t found much information about keeping fish with those types of turtles.
I'd say try it...experimentation is sometimes the only way!
Sometimes it's just one of those days when you feel the need to look back and smile at all of those embarrassing, childish, silly moments that just so happened to define who you are
um, sure!
I have 3 platty fish with my turtle and my turtle never bother them once and it has been a month. I think the turtles temperament is a big part of it.
yeah, personality and temperament is huge contributing factor to the success of tankmates!
My albino tiger barbs eat the dead skin off my turtles. It's weird, but Aho and Nino seem to like it.
huh! interesting! anything for a snack I guess haha!

What kind of Turtle do you have in your tank, It's adorable!
I really want turtle tank mates! I have a 75 gallon tank with a 4.5 inch turtle so I have some space lol, he is somewhat fast though (usually clumsy so he probably wouldn’t get it) so can the fish potentially hurt them if he does catch them?
No...although certain catfish/plecos are armored/may have spines so you just want to research and make sure you're comfortable with trying such fish with your turt. The other ones mentioned (rasboras...danios...livebearers) are all great and harmless though!
Hi so I don’t have enough room in my tank for a humid hide. It’s a 25 gallon but I already have a lot of hides what should I do?
Are we talking about a leopard gecko or something? If possible, maybe convert one of the hides on the cool side into a humid hide?
@@TheTurtleGirl yes I have a leopard gecko! Thank for the tip what material is best for making it humid
I have seen my pleco on my turtles shell a few times lol
uh oh 👀 no damage though?
@@TheTurtleGirl no damage. Going from a 55 gallon tank to a 75 for my turtle now.👍🏻
Can northern diamondback turtle be on the same tank with the red bellied florida turtle?
I mean possibly....you just have to make sure that if any aggression happens you separate them. A big tank with lots of decorations will increase chances of success
I've always heard the issue with plecos and turtles is that if the turtles eat them, the barbs can get caught in their mouth/throat
I would like to see more feeding videos ☺️
noted! thanks for watching!
Asking here because frankly your opinion is the only opinion I've learned to trust. I want to get tankmates for my musk. I got red rosey minnows and now I'm reading all these terrifying things about thiamine and parasites in fish if the turtle eats them. What are your opinions on how serious of a threat this is for a full-grown musk turtle? Is this over hyped on the internet or credible? Is my turtle better off living a life of solitude? I want him to have some entertainment but I'm worried he's going to get sick from having fish in there. Thanks for your help!
My baby turtles (red eared sliders) with a size of 4.8cm and 6.1cm in a 10gallon tank individually, is it okay to keep plecos in there? Is the space suffice for the pleco to survive, not harmful and live with my babyturtle?
And is it poison-ness to my baby turtles if they manage to eat the pleco in any ways? 😩
I'd wait til you had a bigger tank...10 gallon is pretty small to start with! They are not poisonous though, so you wouldn't have to worry about that.
I just got a turtle yesterday do u have any tips?
do your water changes and make sure you have a basking area with heat and uvb :) and don't ever stop learning/doing research :)
@@TheTurtleGirl thx :)

Omg thank you I’ve been looking to get a friend form my turtle and my hatchling has grown to be around 2 inches in length and she is doing good.
Could you do a video to tell what gender you hatchling turtle is because I’m still no sure if she is a girl and no videos have helped me
You can't really tell with hatchlings unless you know what temperature they were incubated at! Otherwise you have to wait til they grow a bit.
@@TheTurtleGirl ok thanks you so do you know how to tell what they are when they grow
Can you please do one for axolotls

People forget how big the Chinese algae eaters get up to 11”!
oh really?!
@@TheTurtleGirl yesss ! They have some smaller variations but the Chinese in particular grow to 11”!! I’ve got 4 in my 125g
They get large, and very aggressive too.
It's a pattern, on many rheophilic cyprinids, that they're always showing aggression towards fish that even slightly resemble themselves.
I can't give my turtles any light my cousins abandoned them so I took them but I don't have enough money to give them those things what should I do
You can try to setup an outdoor enclosure with a kiddy pool for the time being. There is a video from another youtuber that you can take inspiration from. I'll put the link here when I find it.
Yep, if you can't afford UVB, you can make an outdoor pool enclosure so that they can get natural uvb from the sun until you can afford more for them. There are videos online of how to make an outdoor enclosure safe, like by boxing it off from predators.
good suggestions above! keeping outdoors is a great way to make sure they have sunlight and also enough space. best of luck!
I bought danios and my turtle ate them.
Can turtle eat the corridor cat fish?
The turtle won’t eat or bite at the sucker fish???
Some plecos actually have plates of 'Armour' of sorts that protects them. Ofc if you add any fish to a turtle tank, you'll want to be cautious at first to see if the turtle does try and eat them, but plecos are usually unlikely to be prey bc they aren't super active top level swimmers and are very good at tucking themselves away and hiding.
Thanks so much i’ve been wanting one but I thought it was easy prey for my turtle I might “need” to get one now
it can definitely depend on the aggression/hunting prowess of the turtle, but with my musks I've had a lot of luck.
