Such a long time coming, so stoked to finally share the details and thoughts behind my build with you guys, and finally reveal some awesome projects we've been working on 🤘
@@EliteAtlantaHomes I was for a bit, they're pretty unique and have their situations where they shine for sure, especially for no foothold riding IMO. But for an all-around build, and especially for things like fast transitions or airtime (jumps), I prefer a symmetrical rail like WTF's. Been running BTG WTF S&D's for a bit over a year now, ever since I won WinMan 2023 with them.
This was sweet dude! Didn’t realize I wasn’t subbed to your personal channel, so I just subbed! Thanks for sharing your setup and insight to your build. Was dope to get your perspective! 🤙🏾
That's a sick setup and great explanation. Can't wait to try out that tire and been trying to source a kush lo XR for ages so needless to say can't wait for that to drop too with that new sensor tech and beat the hell out of it. Thanks for the shoutout to the community folks. Much appreciated!
Waited a long time for this one. Naturally, I don't have time to watch it, but know it's going to be good. Thank you Nico. Thank you for all that. you do for our community. I'm so happy I'm VESC now. Seeing the light, changes everything. . . rock, rock on, and always, aoxomoxoa.
This was such a sick RYS, really cool to see how Nico is really going for an extreme trail killer that isn't pure-power. It goes to show how important the other aspects of building a board are.
Sooooo excited for those new footpads AND the new footholds. SIGN ME UP!!! Awesome seeing the ins and outs of your ride. Also, we want to see your other board too!!!
Other board is EXTREMELY similar, just 18s2p instead of 19s2p, and Hypercore with Pint Hub instead of Superflux HS! Lighter under the feet, easier to whip around on ground and in air, and easier to carry around haha. I really only prefer the Superflux in a racing context where I need all the power I can get while at speed (though thermals are also not a concern at my weight lol).
@DonnyWalter The Growler is my 3rd board haha, that's just for around the shop and short runs around town mostly. But that's on a Street Pro 2 for Pint (previously known as the HellaRad). Easily my favorite Pint Tire, I've been running that and it's predecessor (TFL X Burris XtraRad) for 4 years now.
Haha thanks for the details on the street growler! @nicoaleman so you’re digging the BTG thundercat on the pint hub? I might need to pick up a pint hub.
@DonnyWalter Yeah! It's one of those things that's more of a luxury than a necessity, hard to say if the difference compared to XR hub is worth the price of a used Pint Hub, but I really do prefer the ride feel difference. Makes the tire a bit more nimble and responsive feeling, and makes it feel like you have more rubber on the edges with the way it rounds out over the narrower rim, giving more of a suspension feel. Definitely makes unexpected chunk on edge less jarring.
The innovation is so constant and awesome to see. Doesn't look like that tire will fit a Floatwheel though since the burris only fits without the fender. Time to sell my GT and build a VEXR lol. Those footholds looks absolutely amazing. Can't wait
Even for those of us that aren't pushing it to the limits, those footholds look like we'll get disconnected from the board way less making it safer for even amatuers. It's like flightfins as toe holds with the 45 degree front foot angle...ahhh...chefs kiss
Hard to say, it'll be close, but we can't confirm until we go to production since the diameter can slightly change with each revision. We're designing the tire to fill out our BTG rails first and foremost, but we will probably check on a Floatwheel when it's ready just to get an answer on that.
If you cut a fender in half, you can fit it.. you need a chunk of plastic to bridge the gap for a full fender. If you can get an abs plastic one as abs - abs is not a "glue" connection its called a "solvent weld " which is much much stronger ( the acrinotrile and styrine chemically bonds to itself on a molecular level ((
When they're ready! Sensors are a big responsibility and we're taking great care to make sure they're as dialed as possible. Definitely not something you wanna rush to market. But the wait will be worth it 🙏
What a setup! Excited for those new footholds. 20 degrees remote sounds crazy, I have mine set to about 7, but then again I optimized it so I would never have to microadjust, just full up or down. Rarely do you ever really need more than 7 degrees. Tire looks sick too been waiting in a good BTG tire for a while
Awesome great video, information. Please consider posting what can be if need be how used on the ADV..an or pro boards. Like foot hooks, pads, V2 remote. 🖖🏼
If you mean XR, it will require the new Kush, the pad has a slightly new shape that the mount is designed around, and the mount requires some new attachment points that aren't on the old kush. I think existing GT Kush's *may* be compatible if they have those two rear attachment points near the end of the tail, but not 100% on that.
¡dude, i got so excited when i saw the thumbnail for this one ¿VESC Whisperer's Rep Your Set ¡fuck yeah that being said & building from your naming scheme, i propose the name ThunderLynx for TFL's big tire
Great video, excited to try the pads/holds and BTG. I got your GT wtf rails for my fusion build so I can scrub out the aleman bit and pretend they’re custom 😂
Thanks for this Nico! I have the adv so obviously no 5" hub would fit this huge motor. My ears perked up when you said the bigger tire gives added suspension which is awesome! However that will also raise the height of the board which is a negative. Can you notice the difference in height? How does this setup feel for street riding?
The difference in height is noticeable, but plenty of people ride it as is and still love it. That said, with the ADV, you can just lower the axle height to negate that height difference while still getting the better suspension of the big tire. It's definitely a solid move! I know tons of people running ADV's with the big Burris 11.5x7-6 TX11 (treaded) or SS11 (slick), you just gotta remove the mini fenders for clearance since it can rub otherwise. If you were doing mostly street riding, it probably wouldn't be my first choice, but just depends on your ride style. I just like something more nimble and responsive for street riding. But it's a solid choice for high speed street mobbing and tanking through unexpected potholes and bumps at speed.
If you're footpad is cutting at speed, assuming essential parameters like ADC thresholds and Half Switch Fault ERPM (speed below which heel lift disengage is possible) are set up correctly, this would indicate either some serious hardware issues, or maybe bad sensor placement if you're using a smaller aftermarket sensor where there could be non-sensored areas on the pad. I say this, as riding above Half Switch Fault ERPM requires you to completely come off the sensor to disengage, which should never happen while riding outside of things like jumps/bonks! I would definitely investigate this before anything else. That said, I use features like Posi (Treat Both Sensors as One), Dirty Trick Landings, and Push Start to help ensure I get solid engagement everytime, and if my board does disengage for whatever reason, it's quick to re-engage the moment it picks up my foot regardless of board angle. I also sometimes have my Full Switch Fault Delay (disengagement delay) a bit higher at 400ms or so to be less prone to unintended disengages. All these are under the Float CFG -> Start/Stop menus. Lastly, I use a feature called Disable Moving Faults, which essentially makes it so as long as the motor is spinning forward, the board stays engaged no matter what. This gives me the ultimate peace of mind that my board will stay engaged through whatever I throw at it while riding at speed, especially through jumps, and even in the event of sensor failure. This works safely because any time your board ghosts (engaged without a rider), it will want to roll backwards since the tail is heavier, so the board naturally comes to a stop and disengages, as Disable Moving Faults is only active for forward rotation. There are some caveats where this could cause your board to stay engaged when unintended, notably if you jumped off on a steep downhill where the tail doesnt have clearance to naturally brake without a rider, if it didnt tip over on its own. Though these cases are pretty dang rare and specific, and I've never had any issues in the two years I've run the feature. Just take caution.
Sick build last time I saw your race board your footpads I think were just sheet metal XD must be much nicer. Gonna rep your set the growler next tho? 👀

OK, ive made a few comments already. Gin talking. Kush wides in hand & 3" flat spot in the middle then transitions into a TOTALLY FLAT "concave" to the edges. Nothing like a skate deck at ALL. If it does i'll post my super sick aluminum footpads there & maybe you can replicate my design✌️
Compared to Flight Fins, Foot Hooks seem to be a tripping hazard when trying to run it out. Flight Fins allow me to control the board with the top of my feet as well as the bottom... and I can run it out without getting tripped up.
I cover it a bit at 20:14, but as someone that ran FlightFins for 3 years (2 of those years racing), I find outside footholds to be superior and more natural feeling in a high speed riding context, and helped me develop technique that completely transformed how I ride. To me, inside footholds like Flight Fins seem more suitable for engaging with the hooks in short bursts, rather than being engaged with the hooks at all times. The benefit there is certainly that it's easier to bail, no doubt about it. However, at high speeds, the control of outside hooks is able to much more consistently keep me out of bail situations at all compared to other options. And when it does happen, we luckily designed our hooks with a focus of being easier to bail out of than alternatives. That outside pressure also more closely mimics proper riding technique when riding without footholds (pushing outward against grip tape to engage with footpads and maintain control). Because of this, I found that using these types of footholds improved my overall riding technique both with and without footholds immensely. I was always a modest rider and racer in the 3 years I raced with Fins, but in just 1 month on Control Freaks, I was suddenly throwing down top results at the biggest races in the nation, they genuinely were a game changer for me.
