  • The fantastic 'FLYING SCOTSMAN' No. 60103 in all it's glory arriving at the Bluebell Railway, East Grinstead station West Sussex UK.
Historical Facts: Originally a Great Northern Railway (GNR) engine and designed by Nigel Gresley, this A1 Pacific locomotive took it's inspiration from the Pennsylvania Railroad's K4 Pacifics. Two locomotives were originally completed in 1922 by Doncaster Works and were a great success, so much so that the GNR commissioned a further ten. The Flying Scotsman name came about at the time of the British Empire Exhibition in 1924, the name by which the 10:am departure from King's Cross to Edinburgh was unofficially known. The next claim to fame came about when it was decided the locomotive should complete first non-stop run of the flying Scotsman from King's Cross to Edinburgh on 1st May 1928 and covering a distance of 392 miles. The A1 locomotive class also became the first to be recorded as travelling at 100 mph. On the 14th January 1963 No. 60103 hauled it's last passenger train for British Railways, the 1:00 pm from Kings Cross to Leeds. It was originally intended for it to be scrapped but thankfully the long route to a great preservation was about to start it's very own journey. The above is a rough resume to the history, but for a great read of a very useful and well researched history of the Flying Scotsman, apply to the Bluebell Railway where Brian Sharpe and Colin Tyson have together with Bluebell Railway produced a booklet entitled Flying Scotsman Flying South.
