I am very lucky to have this beautiful preserved railway very close to where I live in the gorgeous West Sussex countryside. It is simply stunning when all the namesake bluebells are sprouting alongside of the track in the spring. I have travelled up and down that line on numerous occasions Once I was lucky enough to blag an end of the day footplate ride on the then in steam 92240 9F loco. The line only went as far as Kingscote back then and we ran round the train and all the way back to Sheffield Park tender first, I shall never forget it! 😊

I have visited when the lineside is carpeted in primroses leading me to speculate that "The Primrose Line" would also have been a suitable name for the Railway. You were lucky to have enjoyed a footplate ride with the 9F, I hope it isn't too long before she's back in steam.
Lovely video of a very picturesque line. Great to see so many wildflowers along the sides too. It inspired me to go poking around on maps and tracing more of the former line. Beautiful sound of the engine too. Thanks for sharing!
I love the forward view because it's a complete view, both sides along with the front view. In spring the railway is lined with primroses as well as bluebells and wild lupins. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I agree, it's lovely to see so many wild flowers.

Tim, what a pleasant journey. The last time I visited the Bluebell Railway was well before the mammoth work to re-open the line beyond Kingscote and reach East Grinstead. Indeed when my family lived closer to that area, than now. The weather & sunlight complemented the setting & views. I especially appreciated the addition of your ‘as a passenger’ shots. Hello Peter, the extended part of the railway is blending in nicely with its surroundings. At 11 miles long the railway is just the right length for families visiting with children as I was just this weekend. I deliberately chose a quiet week day when I knew the railway wouldn't be busy because it is easier to place a camera on the locomotive when the crew are more relaxed and able to spare the time, on busy days the footplate crew have far more to do such as showing people the inside of the cab and hopefully encouraging youngsters to become tomorrow’s volunteers.
Hi Tim, lovely to say 'hello' at Kingscote station. Good to see our railway from the driver's view. I want a ride in the cab one day, maybe when it's a bit cooler outside. I know there was disputes over West Hoathly station from the residents - there's been more new houses built now so maybe another station can be built as you say nearer Coombe bridge. Hello Cathy, Kingscote station looked lovely with its well stocked flower beds and beautifully restored station buildings. I hope you get that cab ride one day. A station at West Hoathly would be nice to see, but realistically its not going to happen any time soon, there is too much to be done elsewhere on the line and who knows, I might get to ride a Bluebell train to Ardingly before my time is up.

I'd like to see the National Railway Museum and the Bluebell Railway get together to establish an outpost dedicated to electric trains, both overhead and third rail. I know there would be Health and Safety issues, but such problems are overcome elsewhere in the world. I'd love to once again hear the sound of one of the 2 Bil or 2 Hal emu's I used to travel to school on. The use of electric trains would make operations at Haywards Heath station much simpler. You are correct, the driver sees far less than the camera and at times he has to rely on the fireman to look for signals on corners where the driver doesn't have a clear view ahead.
Fascinating to see once again the remains of the "exploded" bridge at around 8.50. Somewhere in my box of sleeping VHS tapes I have a video of a year at the Bluebell with footage of the actual demolition. By golly the army types had fun that day...
I also remember seeing the demolition on a DVD or VHS tape. I have taken video at the Bluebell Railway ever since I bought my first video camera in the early 1980's, when I'm watching my old videos it's fascinating to see the changes over the years. When I'm too old to travel any-more, I'll edit together videos documenting the development of some of our heritage railways. I remember watching the army guys relaying part of the Ffestiniog Railway at the point where it leaves the cob to turn inland near the locomotive depot.

West Hoathly station is unlikly to be rebuilt on its current site, as it is located on a gradient, hence the society believes that any future station at West Hoathly would most likely be built a little to the North, on the level stretch from the end of the goods yard towards New Coombe Bridge

Hello, I am lucky to live just over 1 hours drive from the world's first standard gauge preserved railway, the 'Bluebell Railway' . I have seen it develop over the years from a little railway in the middle of nowhere into the wonderful tourist attraction seen in this video. The steam locomotives and carriages are beutifully preserverved, still preforming the same job they were designed to do more than 100 years ago. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Kind regards. Me again again...I'm not suggesting or implying anything, but West Hoathly looks much more like a station than it has before in my memory. I haven't been keeping close tabs on the railway for some years, so am I missing anything? It would be a marvellous addition to the line and completes the original station complement of the line to Sheffield P. Of course, if they kept the track and points they pulled out when the Kingscote extension was completed...but probably not.
I agree that West Hoathly should be reinstated as a station..Perhaps the local residents were against it? I've no idea, but it'd give them a handy ride into East Grinstead for shopping, schools etc. Perhaps the residents could even be given discount tickets to use when travelling by train..
Amazing if it was double tracked, to see an preserved express passenger or heritage goods train pass. Since infrastructure like bridges and tunnels already exist. 👍

Hello Jane, it's nice to hear from you, we are both keeping well. We took two Australian girls and their Mum to the Bluebell Railway yesterday, to see their first steam train and to travel in carriages that were more than 125 years old, they enjoyed it, but I think it will be the ice-creams and children's activities that they will remember. I will be spending a week visiting Welsh railways with my eldest daughter towards the end of this month. As yet I haven't booked anything overseas because our youngest daughter is getting married later this year, although I do intend to book the Gulflander and Savannahlander trains in Australia on my way to visit my son in New Zealand before the end of this year. The `Gloucester and Warwickshire' is a lovely railway, I must visit it again sooner rather than later. Next year we intend to book another Rail Discoveries holiday, but for the moment the only thing on Karen's mind is her daughters wedding. We have seen several small buildings on either side of the track. Most appear to be 1 room, very old & look to have chimneys. Some have windows. They do not appear near most stations. What are they used for?
Hi, most of those little buildings a permanent way huts, they are used by track workers to store equipment, take a tea-break and shelter during bad weather.
I think our family in the UK want to take us on this railway when we come over to the UK next month, is this the one that does the Christmas Special with the train all lit up with lights?

I use the term "driver" to indicate it’s a "forward" facing view, The UA-cam algorithm ignores "forward facing", but it loves "Driver's Eye View" and "Cab View". I know the description is a bit cynical, but I have to play by the UA-cam algorithm’s rules otherwise few people will get to know of the existence of these videos.
Some of the spot fires were deliberate to get rid of debris in a controlled way before a spark from one of the locomotives does the job in an uncontrolled manner. Trains are not followed by a fire control trolley, but the railway does have a tank wagon on standby and their own fire engine if required.

@@arch9enius I've seen the modern version of road crane used on the railways today and was left wondering what happened to the foresight and ingenuity of past generations, there is already a railway to the scene of the incident, why build a road just for a road crane? There are times when the army should be called in; they have the equipment to lay temporary roads and what better way to prepare for the day when they are needed in the field of combat.
It was the best I could do on the day, I did mount a camera on the top hand rail as can be seen when the train left East Grinstead, unfortunately it overheated and cut out shortly after leaving the station.

I hope all those lineside fires are because of vegitation clearance , rather than in spite of it.

This clear view in this film must be much better than the view that a driver of a steam locomotive would see.

Witam, mam szczęście mieszkać nieco ponad 1 godzinę jazdy od pierwszej na świecie zachowanej linii kolejowej o normalnym rozstawie torów, „Bluebell Railway”. Widziałem, jak rozwijał się przez lata, od małej kolejki pośrodku niczego do wspaniałej atrakcji turystycznej widocznej na tym filmie. Lokomotywy parowe i wagony są pięknie zachowane i nadal wykonują tę samą pracę, do której zostały zaprojektowane ponad 100 lat temu. Cieszę się, że podobał Ci się film. Serdeczne pozdrowienia. Tim 😊.
Hello, I am lucky to live just over 1 hours drive from the world's first standard gauge preserved railway, the 'Bluebell Railway' . I have seen it develop over the years from a little railway in the middle of nowhere into the wonderful tourist attraction seen in this video. The steam locomotives and carriages are beutifully preserverved, still preforming the same job they were designed to do more than 100 years ago. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Kind regards. Me again again...I'm not suggesting or implying anything, but West Hoathly looks much more like a station than it has before in my memory. I haven't been keeping close tabs on the railway for some years, so am I missing anything? It would be a marvellous addition to the line and completes the original station complement of the line to Sheffield P. Of course, if they kept the track and points they pulled out when the Kingscote extension was completed...but probably not.
I agree that West Hoathly should be reinstated as a station..Perhaps the local residents were against it? I've no idea, but it'd give them a handy ride into East Grinstead for shopping, schools etc. Perhaps the residents could even be given discount tickets to use when travelling by train..

From what can be seen from 23:51 to 24:58, now we should all know that "the light at the end of the tunnel" really exists.

Amazing if it was double tracked, to see an preserved express passenger or heritage goods train pass. Since infrastructure like bridges and tunnels already exist. 👍
In British Rail days the line was double track. There just isn't enough money to be able to restore the second line.

Hello Jane, it's nice to hear from you, we are both keeping well. We took two Australian girls and their Mum to the Bluebell Railway yesterday, to see their first steam train and to travel in carriages that were more than 125 years old, they enjoyed it, but I think it will be the ice-creams and children's activities that they will remember. I will be spending a week visiting Welsh railways with my eldest daughter towards the end of this month. As yet I haven't booked anything overseas because our youngest daughter is getting married later this year, although I do intend to book the Gulflander and Savannahlander trains in Australia on my way to visit my son in New Zealand before the end of this year. The `Gloucester and Warwickshire' is a lovely railway, I must visit it again sooner rather than later. Next year we intend to book another Rail Discoveries holiday, but for the moment the only thing on Karen's mind is her daughters wedding. We have seen several small buildings on either side of the track. Most appear to be 1 room, very old & look to have chimneys. Some have windows. They do not appear near most stations. What are they used for?
Hi, most of those little buildings a permanent way huts, they are used by track workers to store equipment, take a tea-break and shelter during bad weather.
I think our family in the UK want to take us on this railway when we come over to the UK next month, is this the one that does the Christmas Special with the train all lit up with lights?
They may do that, but if so, pretty sure they aren't the only one....

The railway line is only 17km plus, why do you take more than 55 minutes to complete the journey? How fast can the steam engine goes??
The video does include more than just one ride and the locomotives are limited to 25 mph.
If this is the Driver Eye View, is he strapped to the front bumper?
I use the term "driver" to indicate it’s a "forward" facing view, The UA-cam algorithm ignores "forward facing", but it loves "Driver's Eye View" and "Cab View". I know the description is a bit cynical, but I have to play by the UA-cam algorithm’s rules otherwise few people will get to know of the existence of these videos.

Me again. Obviously very dry judging by the little spot fire sites. Were you being followed by a spotter trolley?
Some of the spot fires were deliberate to get rid of debris in a controlled way before a spark from one of the locomotives does the job in an uncontrolled manner. Trains are not followed by a fire control trolley, but the railway does have a tank wagon on standby and their own fire engine if required.

Hello Bob, I was back at the Bluebell Railway yesterday with two Australian girls and their Mum so that they could see a real steam train in action. They were impressed with the trains, but it will be the ice creams and children's interactive displays that they will remember. @@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks. I've seen a modern version of these cranes operated by Balfour Beatty, though it seems to be for construction rather than breakdown s. Too bad, it might make it unnecessary to build roads all the way to an incident .
@@arch9enius I've seen the modern version of road crane used on the railways today and was left wondering what happened to the foresight and ingenuity of past generations, there is already a railway to the scene of the incident, why build a road just for a road crane? There are times when the army should be called in; they have the equipment to lay temporary roads and what better way to prepare for the day when they are needed in the field of combat.

It was the best I could do on the day, I did mount a camera on the top hand rail as can be seen when the train left East Grinstead, unfortunately it overheated and cut out shortly after leaving the station.
