I have a story of interest to tell: Years ago, I don't remember what year, but I was surfing the internet, must of did a search for Tontos. I ended up on his website, saw the CD for sale and called the listed phone number. A man answered and I asked if the CD was still available. OMG I was talking directly to Malcolm Cecil!!! I told him how much I enjoy his album that I had purchased back in the 70's and that I still owned it. I asked if he would sign the CD. His answer was where do you want it signed. Moving on, I waited, and the CD came and when I opened up the CD case there it was " warmest regards Malcolm Cecil". I will all ways cherish this CD!
I don't get some of the negative comments here. Malcom told me Stevie Wonder's management were brutally tight-fisted when it came to paying him what he deserved for all the ground-breaking work he (and Robert Margouleff) did on Stevie's albums. Hopefully he has a nice packet of cash now and can live his remaining years in peace and who knows, turn his creativity towards another fine project. Kudos to Malcolm, I say! PS: The vocoder style tracks on the TONTO album are still unbeatable IMNSHO!!!
TONTO is a monument in synth-history and a music technology museum on itself. It's even more important than so-called founding fathers of the popular electronic music Kraftwerk.
That kind of makes me sad. Malcolm was quite upset at the end. Though I've not seen Tonto in person I've been a Tonto's Expanding Headband fan since the late 70's when Zerotime was played to me as a 10 year old kid. I have all the LPs Malcolm & Robert composed and they are the only reason why I got Innerversions and Songs in the Key of life by Stevie Wonder. It was probably Zerotime, Oxygene & Timewind that got me into analog synth music (and later buying synths) in the first place. Seems like a piece of history has ended. Not sure we'll ever hear Tonto' ride again in the same way as she did when Malcolm owned her. But please post videos.
@Mark, I just saw Tonto in the workshop/lab behind glass at the grand opening of the National Music Centre in Calgary. I think their plan is to restore Tonto (and many other pieces of music historical artifacts) to working order so current musicians got a chance to make new music with her! Quoting the NMC site, "Through our Artist in Residence program, musicians from around the world explore and use our collection in the creation of new works." To me, Malcolm seems sad but also happy as he knows Tonto is in good hands and will be used and new musicians will breath new life into it!
Malcolm Cecil is involved in The Weeknd’s next album. Both of them already worked together before his death. The Weeknd posted a photo of him in his studio
RIP Malcolm Cecil, 1/2 of the under appreciated genius behind Stevie Wonder. Stevie (or his people) robbed them...they never got a dime in producer royalties for their production on those classic albums.

I had no idea this device existed. It seems amazing. I am a student of the Berlin School style of music, but this has to be part of the puzzle.
nice, dear tonto found a home in canada.... nicer even, one can play on it. long live tonto's expanding head band's children
I see you are still involved with that "Other Woman" as Polly so aptly called TONTO...I wish you good fortune on your next adventure.

It's never easy to let go a lifetime project. Money means nothing when sentimental value is on the line.
Mrs. Cecil looked very happy she got rid of that thing.

Is this what Chris Jasper used on the mid-70's Isley albums which gave him that wonderful warm, poly-synth sound?
What? Amazing. Oh Tonto...
A true machine spacial.
I wonder what Sun Ra or Bruse Haack would do with this synthesizer? 🎹🎹🎹🪐🛸
What was the price tag on 45 years of his life? He didn't seem to happy to see it go.
priceless
It's not The Story of TONTO,
it's A Short Blurb About TONTO Being Sold
