I'm German and I'm really proud that a German movie which is so intensely good gets so much international attention. Also, I hope that it opens a conversation about kids like the main character Benni. Those kids must not be forgotten :( also I think the actress did an absolutely phenomenal job for her age
At the time when 'System Crasher' was released to the cinema, we discussed child and youth violence in our pedagogical class in high school. So we went to the cinema with our class. We saw the film as a kind of documentary film. When the movie was over, it was completely silent in the cinema
Watched this film in German cinema a while ago now and it totally wrecked me and I was and will not be able to get over Bennis character. One of the best German films I’ve seen yet so I‘m glad it gets international recognition too :)
The girl's actress is absolutely phenomenal. I cried a lot but I'd definitely recommend this movie
I saw this film at the movies. When I bought the ticket, the woman behind the counter handed it to me saying, "OK, have fun! No, wait... enjoy the movie... or appreciate it or something... it`s good."
Haha! Yeah, "have fun" is probably not the thing to associate with this!
Benni reminded me so much of Steve from "Mommy" by Xavier Dolan, even though you know they are too difficult and dangerous at times you're really hoping someone takes the risk and don't give up on them like their mothers do but the people that want to help them also have their own families and their own issues and can't save them, it's so hard.
Thanks for recommending System Crasher, Chris. What a complex, chaotic life this poor little girl, and those who are trying to help her, are dealing with. The young actress who played Benni was great.

I kept thinking Benni needed a retired couple to foster/adopt her. People who had no other kids at home and could devote themselves to the kind of care she needed. But how many saints do you know who would give up their life to take on a challenge like Benni? For a second I thought the old farmer might save her.
So many people tried to help. But from Benni threatening to use a knife on them, or herself, to threatening to kill Micha's pregnant wife and baby, what could they do? Although, shipping her off to Kenya seemed very sketchy. And what was up with the ending? I'm afraid there is no good, happy ending for Benni.
Yeah, I wasn't too keen on the shipping her off to a different country, but it could be more of a place like Micha was trying to provide in the woods...an outlet to channel her energy/emotions and then slowly shape them into being able to effectively manage what she's feeling. I agree - the end makes me think that it was not pretty...although she was finally free.
I personally think she jumped off the airport roof and died:/
I think the director Nora made the ending open, so everyone can imagine what’s that supposed to mean. It’s difficult. Being a social worker (in Germany) myself I can totally relate because I’m working with kids that sometimes act like Benni. This film shows the facets of working with kids and their trauma. It’s clear that not everything Micha did was right. “Shipping her off” to Kenya sounds strange but all that kind of stuff, even living with a Forster Mom or dad is considered by social services which has to act by the laws of the SGB (Sozialgesetzbuch = Code of Social law). It’s not easy, believe me. Sending her off is kind of like the hardest education measures and the few weeks in the woods with Micha could be viewed as one. BUT there is more professional supervision, so you don’t overstep. Just a quick overview in the profession in Germany. Hope that helps (:

The German actress Helena Zengel who plays the main character Benni (short for Bernadette) gives such an astoundingly powerful performance in this film it leaves me speechless. It's such an intense film about an incredibly disturbed 9 year old who works her way thru the German system available for troubled youth and at each stage burns her bridges and both terrifies and exhausts everyone who comes in contact with her even tho she pulls at the heart strings of everyone she meets.

@@MoviesAndMunchies it's a masterpiece, I've seen it like 8-9 years ago and although I found it absolutely amazing I couldn't watch it a second time to this day because it's just so intense.
System Crasher is up there with Requiem For A Dream for me as far as movies that are extremely hard to watch but feel kind of nessecary to watch go. Both movies are also not only showing characters that make mistakes or cause hardships on themselves but show how the system around them, that is supposed to help can make things worse. That little girl is a horror, but it's not her fault, it's what she needs to do to survive and the saddest part about her is that she is very real. Kids like her fall through the system all the time and it's gutwrenching

I just saw the movie. It's just sad because there are plenty Bennies outside who get crushed by the sistem... I think that the guy who worked with her the entire time and had a family should have adopted her because she really wanted that but he was scared and all that she needed was a home. A home full of love, understanding and peace. By the time she would have find her happiness. But when she realised that the guy would turn her home, she took the baby, enjoyed with him a little bit because he remained her at her brother when he was a little and she get to feed him, then the women comes and asks for baby and not says thank you for the feeding and she gets mad.
Bennie is so lost and she feels so deep broken. It's just too much for her. She is just 9. Everyone is insane.
Someone should have adopted her and she should have a better psychological treatment because the women who treated her didn't do NOTHING. She send her to America to get rid of her by saying that she will have school there. What school mam??? She is broken!! She needs love!!! She needs someone to take care of her and learn how to behave. It's just all so wrong. So sad... Such a tragedy. And her mother was a totally pathetic and idiotic person. She didn't deserve the two other kids too. It's obvious that she is not capable for herself and then for the kids too.
Her new movie with Tom Hanks is also supeeerrrrr solid❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ love from india to his great actress❤️❤️

I watched the movie and I cried too. That's rare because I won't get affected by movies much. I always know they are acting or it's not real. But this movie was different for me. This movie is really good. I recommend it too specially if you have a kid or know some kids.

A couple of suggestions that either produce the same level of anxiety or tension would be Honey Boy, Uncut Gems and the new documentary The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez. Uncut Gems doesn't involve kids, but it is unrelenting in it's tension. The other two will break your heart for the kids.

@@MoviesAndMunchies I thought the same thing and i wash in shock that the movie would end like this...but then there was the airport scene with her beeing sent to Kenia, then running off, which confused me a lot. 🙈 Thanks for the reply! :)

I hated the ending , specially that bennie is just 9yo . She just needed love with right care they could have changed her but she felt abandant and no one want to love her i really wished for a better ending so sad 😭

@@FranGrandees This is basically up to you. She may have jumped, she may have successfully ran away, she may have been caught eventually. Its purposfully not told which I think is the right call because in reality cases like hers do have a million ways of ending as well and her story is just a way to give a voice to all those very different kids that fall right through all the cracks in the system.

@@MoviesAndMunchies benni needs a foster parent that doesnt work, doesnt mind the language, has alarms on the doors, and used to violent children. That person would have to be in it for the longrun. Sad though. Im sure there are thousands of bennis out there

Oh, that's a huge bummer! I hope they release it soon for you!! I know different regions/countries have different agreements with movies so that could be playing into the release date.
This movie isn't a netflix production so there could be some trouble with licenses/copyrightlaws

@@chrisb._1171 Definitely. Netflix purchases the rights to make films "theirs" in certain countries...for example, Annihilation was branded a Netflix original in the UK...depends on how, or if, they purchased the rights.
Odd ending. It made me wonder if Bennie had knowingly sabotaged another option and whether having her die from exposure in the forest would have been a better narrative choice. Maybe they shot it that way but it was too much of a downer for an audience that was already put through a lot. Bennie's mom and the "system" both turned their backs on Bennie in their own way when Bennie became a liability or threat that went beyond their resources. Micha even let's her go after she goes beyond threatening just his livelihood. Still a better ending than just sending her off to Africa with a big hat and plenty of sunscreen. 😅

Is she as annoying as the son in the Babadook? One movie that stressed me out was Mother! Another one was Gaspar Noe's Climax.
I would say she's not as annoying as the kid in Babadook, but others may disagree. I felt she had a true reason behind her behavior and that made me more sympathetic to her.
