I have a german shepherd Rottweiler mix and his son in my experience if ur good at training a Rottweiler would be fine both my Rottweilers are cailm in the house only thing I'd worry about is with a apartment is my boys let off and go nuts with anyone who comes near my house yard or my family luckily my dogs are well trained but living in a apartment might be a problem but with training you could probably bring that down i never tried with my dogs because i personally like my dogs making there selves known but if you can handle the exercise (maybe let them run lose in a field if you can't walk them) and could train them out of barking at people a Rottweiler is defiantly strong enough there back hips might not be the best with age but over all should be fine im not a expert just someone who has and had Rottweilers and german shepherds my whole life. edit me reading this over i could already see people thinking my dogs are aggressive after me saying they bark at people both my dogs are very friendly with respectful people meaning if someone was to walk in my house my boys would tear them up they already proved that i had a guy try to rob me my dog attacked him i also had a old lady come up without asking me and that same dog was perfectly friendly and loved the attention my dogs are extremely protective but wait for my input and if they see no threat they are just as friendly as any other dog i just dont want people seeing me saying my dogs bark and take it as i have to out of control killer Rottweilers

@@kfc3930 I enjoyed your reply. My Rottis never barked except once and they put a family member climbing their car. They were told not to just jump out like they ouned the place. Warned them, so I guess my dog proved my point. Good thing she was good at recall because they would of got hurt. I work with my dogs from day one. I don't understand how they are vicious. I guess reading and studying breeds and how to train them helps. I would love to have a dobe or a German Shepherd. The apartment complex would be terrified. Time will tell.

Thanks so much, Will & Rachel, LOVE these videos! Because of the info you have given in your past videos, I have been able to select the perfect breed for myself and our household. Based on your wisdom about Mastiff / natural guardian breeds, I've decided to go for one of the local heard protection breeds: The Cão da Serra da Estrela - aka, Portuguese Mountain Mastiff of the Estrela Mountains. "Selling point" number one for my decision was the NATURAL guarding skills this breed is known for here, in its native Portugal. And, YES, so far, the little one has shown its nature already quite well, even at a very young age. Your description of these ancient herd protection breeds as "absolutely fearless" and "independent" (what otherwise would be referred as "stubborn" and challenging to train) is super-accurate. Definitely not a good choice for beginners and not at all the same as training German Shepherds and their likes. But as a former dog trainer myself, I love the challenge, and enjoy every moment of training the pup. These breeds being, in your words, "naturally loving and kind to their families", is spot-on as well. THANK YOU for your "waffling of wisdom"!

We have had several breeds, and most perform well in a watch dog roll. Our sleddogs, though were terrible. I think Siberian Huskies would welcome a burgler and help them carry the stuff out. Our Mastiffs were phenomenal in every way. Our Belgian Groenendael was also amazing. He had a big bark, and would follow through if needed. Even our Smooth Collies, had huge barks, that would warn us of any one approaching the place. That warned the Mastiffs, who took over from there. Thanks Will and Rachel. I appreciate what you all do.

    Hi Will,
Will, just saw your bull mastiff course. 2 questions:
    1. Will you be making one anytime soon for Corsos? If so, what does your timeline look like?
    2. If we already purchased the Perfect Puppy Course is there a way to “upgrade” to the breed specific course without having to pay full price since the PPC has already been purchased?

Will, there are many videos out there that show that dogs will not naturally protect / defend u or ur house (even if it was a GSD or a Doberman) unless they are trained to do so. Please advise.

Not sure if most of the guarding breeds would do much other than barking without training.
It would be interesting to see someone trying in a full bite suit what mastiffs and other guarding breeds would do.
I am quite certain most dogs would run, even though my Neapolitan Mastiff stopped a group of people trying to break in to our house.

I have a very friendly Dogo Argentino and I think my biggest concern would be calling him off of someone/something he found to be a threat should it ever come up. He guards naturally, and we are working on him reacting properly to the door but aren't sure how to anticipate that without the stylized training.

Most dogs bluff, after that they won't bite and they figure biting human is wrong. A very good dog trainer in personal. There was a scared Rottweiler during circle agitation. The dog was cowering and turning its back and trying to hide. The trainer press the dog grab the dog's fur and started to twist and pull. When the dog showed some aggression to defend itself. The trainer showed the dog respect and space. That Rottweiler turn from scared to death to ferocious as can be in 5 seconds. The very capable trainer said it's in a Rottweiler's breed description if it thinks it's being killed it will bite you. Now you have a dangerous dog. And he wasn't kidding that dog was very aggressive after that masterful piece of turning a scared dog

Recently I got a new dog ... a "yard dog". He was my uncle's and was raised as a yard dog, never brought inside. As long as he was at my uncle, he was a very good guardian, nobody could've approached. He was very aggresive but also a good listener when he was told to stop. Now, I brought him to my home but now he doesn't even bark, he doesn"t do anything. I take well care about him and show him love but nothing. Is there any chance to get better? Is he like traumatized? Will he be like before?

Some very good advise Will, however I wouldn't necessarily agree that all guardian breeds make good watchdogs or guardians. They should but many are nothing more than family pets!

So lemme get this right, i have two german shepherds that are both well socialized and both really guardy one is more confident the other is more skittish, they both go crazy when they hear someone behind the wall, does that mean if somebody were to break in they would act? Or would they just keep barking, asking this because breaking in is like cake over here

Great choice on english mastiff. Lost our boy last yr and just bought a cane corso to replace our english. Even though well never replace our boy truly. Had 12 yrs of training, breeding, and showing border collies and never thought I'd ever see a smarter breed till we got Bentley ( our English mastiff). I was so wrong. I still get misty eyed over that boy. I believe our new corso may not be the same but same temperament. Never trained our English to be a guard dog but that trait was soooooo instinctive but never to aggressive. We lost him because he was protecting my wife; a long story made short.

The title made me curious to watch. My Cane Corso's have the natural guarding and protection quality. I use socializing and obedience training to help them know a bad situation from a normal one. Something I will do the rest of their lives. The Cane Corso is a lot of work to be able to trust it..

When we first got X, we asked the breeder if doing all the socialization was going to make her less guard'y. Nope. She even tries to protect us from bad guys on TV. She knows when there's a creepy person. We work with her every day on appropriate warning as well because guardian breeds love the sound of their own voice (and they have a big, deep, loud vocal talent!) So important to get the dog socialized. Every size, shape, color of person and other dogs as well. Don't wait until the dog is too big and strong.

Hello, I’ve followed you from when u got Mabel. I had just got a Giant Schnauzer puppy at the same time. We were doing very well with socializing her, taking her out in public , stores etc. she did very well with attention that people gave her. When all this quarantine stuff came up it naturally put a big wrench in the process. Now she’s going on 9 months. Her natural guarding kicked in big time around 7 months. Believe me no teaching needed! We are starting to take her out again. She’s not aggressive with anyone but doesn’t like people touching her. I knew this of this breed when I did my research. My question is did I miss my window with the socializing because of the quarantine or do we march forward with it even though she shows no interest in people. Does anyone have any suggestions? Love this dog. She will without a doubt let us know if anyone is around that shouldn’t be, and even if they broke in, I do believe she’d have zero tolerance for it. Love ur channel and ur wife is a nice addition. Thank you peace ✌️

Size and weight generally the first things noticeable. Generally speaking males are more territorial and dominant. But I find this to be irrelevant when choosing a pup, as some females can display the same traits. The best way to find the puppy that fits your expectations is to go to a reputable breeder and ask him to help you pick the right one, betting it a male or a female.
