- Author and parenting educator Rosalind Wiseman addresses some of the tough issues facing parents and kids, from bullying to unhealthy relationships to combating the dreaded fake apology. Wiseman offers strategies for parents to communicate effectively with their children and teach them how to work through their problems. Throughout her talk, Wiseman explains how to avoid becoming the “crazy, anxious, micromanaging parent” and to foster a trusting and respectful parent-child relationship.
Wiseman, whose book "Queen Bees and Wannabes" formed the basis of the movie "Mean Girls," pays particular attention to adolescent behavior.

Reading Masterminds & Wingmen helped me to realize how nuanced the role that media, parents, and other students has on a young person's perception of gender and his or her own identity. The book, I feel, accurately depicted some of the relationships found at school and attempted to provide reasoning behind the hierarchy found at most schools. Her justifications for these actualities seems to be genuine, and they provided a solid insight into my daily life as a young person. One of the things that stuck out to me was the argument about how media perpetuates this often demeaning and offensive gender roles. Wiseman argues that the video games, toys, and other mediums that serve to mold young people's minds to the unfair standards placed on each respective gender are harmful to society. And while I believe this argument is valid, I also think it's not really possible for this norm to disappear from society anytime soon, if ever. It seems from the box office, TV ratings, and constant advertising that people want to see ads and films that often have offensive and demeaning messages about gender, and corporations will likely continue to provide media to satisfy this fixation with an "ideal gender role".
