when I was in college took a history course called local folklore, we had to document local people and events to get a primary source for historical resources on what life was like in a particular place and time. That is what you are doing with the podcast, people in future generations or who live in different places will be able to draw on this resource and others to form a picture of what life was like in Oahu at this time. Hope you can get different anties and uncles to tell their stories to expand on this, besides it's really entertaining.
As a east coast surfer who only visits but dreams of living there, please keep these coming! North shore surf stars are the only ones I care about! Love you guys
New drinking game: take a sip every time Jamie says “X,Y and Z” 😂. JK that was one of my favorite conversations - great to hear the north shore stories from your guys’ youth!
Full lol’s. Took me back to the intermediate and early HS years from years. Scared everyday but so stoked, surfing everyday, cruising and the crazy side missions. Classic
Love Mason and Jamie. Down to earth homies. First time I met Mason I was surfing Rocky Rights...got a couple fun ones and Mason paddled up to me and introduced himself then introduced me to his sister and some of the boys in the lineup. I met you Jamie for the first time in Nias for the JOB Nias swell These guys are so down to earth. These guys are some of the gnarliest surfers but so cool and approachable. Keep up the good vibes! Wish you boys all the best. I'm still here in Sumatra. Got slabs here you might like.
Just finished the episode on Spotify. Keep up the good work guys! It's fun being a fly on the wall to these conversations, and it's great for us listeners that you two have distinct personalities that keep the conversations fresh. Adding Mason on the podcast was genius!
What a different life style John has with Jamie. John just cool to do whatever let the world take him wherever and Jamie is just about posting videos and being relevant
Sooo Good you Guys... Im like 65 now n still surf every day.. on a Short Board. Way back when i was 15 i use to surf Aussie Pipe like sooo much and the Local Aboriginal Guys where just so Unreal... Taught ya about RESPECT in the LineUp...Left our car in the Bush carpark Unlocked with the windows down.. The Crew left our car OK! But heaps got trashed...Had such a great relationship with them.. I was just a White Haired skinny little White Kid...
Jamie as smart as AF. I said a long time ago some cable network should back the truck up to Mason Ho… he’s insanely likable and Jamie, who is super smart, realizes that quirkiness is endearing.
When we were kids in the early 60's and learning to surf, "Dude" was a derogatory name used to describe non surfers (per "Murph the Surf" in Surfer Magazine) LOL!
Foodland was "Dudeland" back in the early 80's also. lol! I would see people I had not seen in years every time I went in to shop. Never any traffic back then unless there was a contest. I lived in Kahuku also, did all the same stuff. Raced motocross at the track, hunt pigs on the marine base in the mountains, had a dune buggy we rode all over those mountains. Got kicked of the base all the time, but they were cool about it back then. Plenty of racism against me too for being white. Not a week went by that I did not have to fight some local guy simply for being white, pretty lame actually. Today so many grow up thinking white people are somehow the only people who can be racist, not even close to the truth. In fact it is the total opposite now. I was pretty large for a surfer back then 6'-4". 235lbs. super fit and that racism shit and surfing almost every day made me really tough but honestly the Hawaiian racism is why I ultimately left Hawaii, I did not want my own kids to have to live that way and I did not have the means to be able to insulate them from it like many of the white people there do.....Well, my kids had to deal with racism against them for being white here on the mainland anyway from every other race! lol! I should have just stayed in Hawaii! 🤙
@@hawaiifreespeechnews some of the best times of my life back then!.....I remember those years fondly, even the bad stuff. Hawaii is in fact a paradise, it is the humans that always ruin the best things in life. None of us actually own anything here on this planet, we only get to borrow them for a while so we should simply enjoy them while we are here. 🤙
yeah get johns boat with you job , mason ,nate ,ivan and a few more crew to surf sail to tropical searches now that would be an epic block buster .DO IT🤮😎
Mason is right. There are places where it is too cold to take the hood off even if one is used to cold water and even if you hate hoods. Our winters (East coast Canada) have water temps at the freezing point and air temperatures regularly 10 to 20 degrees below that, often with a solid wind and snow/sleet. Hypothermia is a serious risk even with good gear if things go sideways. FWIW, I tend to use the least neoprene possible and I like cold water, but I'm in a 6/5 in the dead of winter. If you don't like hoods (i don't either), try xcel suits. Their hoods have a flexible chin which is way more comfortable than other brands. If you do a lot of surfing in moderately cold water without a hood, it is wise to wear earplugs (which i hate even more) to avoid needing surgery down the road...
I understand how J would have had to dodge the natives as a kid, but who would have thought M, son of Mike and nephew of Derek, had to deal with any of that stuff. Wow!. I had a friend who was a high school teacher in NYC and Hawaii, and he said that the Hawaiian schools were by far more violent.
Polynesian kids are enormous especially Tongan and Samoan and they don't care who they bully probably didn't even know who Masons dad and uncle were having said that Polynesian people are incredibly nice and welcoming just don't get on their bad side. Here in Australia they are the best people to work with funny, engaging, nice and hard working then the other side of the coin is every outlaw motorcycle gang in Australia uses them as stand over men and enforcers needless to say they are very effective.
Mason yo r a bullet your mind goes so fast 😮😅😀 awesome to sense your insights. Everywhere is kind of the same island. Specially 20-30 years ago and probably worst before or better “”depending on what you focused on…. Love you guys. Best entertainers 🙌🏽👆🏆🥇🎖☀️💥🌈⚡️🌟💫✨👏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏😎
At some point when you get older surfing pipeline on a regular basis will be testing the odds...I think I would have to move and just put it behind me.
Everyone knows the content that would come from John and Jamie sailing on a three week adventure would make everyones year LOL
Mason is the perfect co-host. I was gonna say sidekick, but I got way too much respect for the Ho family 🤙
I agree!

The system will always try to kill the dreamers dreams because they want to keep you in their misery

Psyched!!!
Love this podcast.
💦💙
Not sure how it is now. In the 70's our surf team Oceanside Ca HS met at beach first period.

This is so good. Make this happen.
Mason rocks such a cool cat. 🤘🏾
Mason is the 1st and last guy you want on your session. While he's probably a hoot to surf with, he'd take all the waves .....hhahahaha

Epic interview 😎 🔥
Great podcast just awesome content
Much appreciated!
You picked the right cohost..
Sometimes Mason gives me Steven Wright vibes (the one liner comedian) :P
At some point when you get older surfing pipeline on a regular basis will be testing the odds...I think I would have to move and just put it behind me.
I can't believe surfing was not on that list in economics class, on the North shore!?
Thank god mas is on the podcast 😅
Mason needs to be permanently on the show man
Growing up in Hawaii I’m sure you learn respect more than anything cool part of the islands.
The bracelet story 😂😂😂
classic surf brat stories from school days!
There was a surf team class in 1980.
Finally we know the truth about the Florence brothers (and it’s pretty much like everyone thought)
Absolute Space cadet
Classic!
Incredible
Kaiser doesn't have a surf team either. there's only about 15-20 kids in that entire school that surf.
MASON ! = Forever Grom (Fumble) funny humble fuckin gold
You would have gotten sick sailing content!!!
Need timestamps
Need to be up closer for recording his podcasts
If job says xyz one more time im dropping in on him at bowls next time i see him there…
