    Great explanation of the different options, thank you! I have been thinking of getting a wetsuit but have been really happy so far with the difference the gloves and boots have made to my stamina and have converted all my friends to these also! Hi Rach, I have just started sea swimming this August, and have been pool swimming for about 10years, and I stumbled upon your videos by chance and very pleased I did. Very informative and fun. I am 64 and loving it in the sea! I can manage 20mins at the moment and then I am cold. I wore a silicone cap this Tuesday and boy what a difference it made. Will get some gloves next, I already wear swim shoes to make walking easy on the steep pebble beach where I live. I am fortunate to live a 15 minute walk from the sea, in Seaton on the Jurassic coast. My daughter is a long distance swimmer and has been really encouraging! Best regards Andy.

      Hi Andy, I’m pleased you’re enjoying the videos. Brilliant that you’ve made the transition to the sea. Protecting the extremities will make a great difference and allow you to enjoy it. Hi, I’ve just found your channel (and subscribed!) and just want to say thank you so much for your very helpful, informative and funny videos! I live reasonably near to Calshot and Lepe and my husband and I have this year decided to carry on swimming through winter so your advice & tips are invaluable! We swam Christmas eve and it was chilly but so invigorating :) I want to do the Test swim you featured too as that is very close to us too but I was never sure how safe it would be. Thank you for inspiring us to carry on and try new swims :)

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 роки тому

      Hi K, thanks for subscribing. We sure live in a lovely area for swimming. To swim the Test, do so at high tide. Park by the Daily Echo, cross the railway line and head for the concrete culvert which is about 50m to your left. Get in here and swim to the right and back to get a feel for it. It's lovely there. There is a 600m swoosh from the foothbridge downstream to the culvert. Before I swam this from the footbridge, I swam upstream to it from the culvert in a wetsuit to see what I'd be getting myself into and to check for any hazards. Gopatee Beach at Eling is also nice. 🏊😄

    This gave me confidence to swim in the lake today. Was chilly in NY and I already had scuba and tri summer wetsuits, brought lots of dry options and a thermos of hot tea so could stay in the sun outdoors after with my brother who watched fr shore. Fab video Rachel thank you so much. Do u have a video about getting wetsuits on/off!!! I use one because I can’t control my body temperature or BP HR digestion etc so the compression feels good. The water is the only place I can exercise as I need to be laying down (autonomic systems broken). The buoyancy feels so good my heavy legs ease. I then do my physio in the water and out again. Getting out of the suit is then sooo hard and exhausting so any tips would be great xx

I ordered a wetsuit from Amazon as I am a skinny cold mortal but they sent size 10 instead of 12 so I am awaiting a refund and wont bother to re-order as I may well just cope. Already use booties for the stones and have a pair of old diving gloves, just need the neoprene hat. I've just made a robe based on your recent video so it's along the smoc smoc lines. The inaugural usage today was a bit iffy but I realise where I went wrong as I have just re-watched your video and, yes, it is a bit of a dark art! I've watched this before Rach surprised I didn't comment. I'll prob hold fire on natural swimming for now but excited lidos will open throughout the winter - i may get a wetsuit for the unheated ones. Don't want to umble other than remain humble :)
    Went on a blissful golden leaf crunching walk today with comfy sports joggers, thick socks, jumper, scarf. I felt like I was tucked up in bed yet energised at the same time. And felt like I was being hugged in a year of social distancing - and felt mentally good for outdoor exercise.
    Prob how you feel after a swim right? I didn't wear a hat today but will when it gets really cold.

      @@EverydayAthleteRach i can imagine it's less the swimming in the rain that's a problem, more the being on land in the rain I guess. Glad you got your swim in.
      Good tip there thanks Rach. Oh on the video about tips for staying in water where you clearly explained all the umbles, I noticed through the clear water you were barefoot and bare hand. I think this may have been you were in the sea close to beach so I'm guessing it's still warm from the summer and just sand or pebbles underneath. Unusual for you though as I know you usually cover all escape points for body heat incl hands and feet.
      Finally I have a personal question if I may ask? Are you or have you been a teacher? You come across as a really good teacher. I'll never forget the umbles, I'll tell my kids and Grandkids and you are very inspirational and have the voice of a strong teacher.

  • @marathoner_Ali
    @marathoner_Ali 3 роки тому

    Great vid (again).
    My issue is that I carry very little natural warming coverage and suffer from a dodgy lower-back whereby I spasm and slip discs almost at will (yay). However, keeping that lower back warm makes a huge difference to what I can achieve. With those two points, I opt for a wetsuit when the water dips below 20C (I know, Mediterranean wimp), but I always swim open-water sea for 1-2 hours, so even at 19C it can all too soon cool my spinal muscles down, hence the wetsuit.
    Yes, a standard rubber wetsuit is not made for us breaststrokers; but as you say, not many options there at the lower budget mail-order end, so I use 250g ankle weights due to the high salinity here which stops me frog-kicking fresh air.
    When 20-23C I opt for a 3mm neoprene swim vest and swim shorts, which add buoyancy where I need it, but keeps that core (and lower back particularly) toasty warm - I have even worn that most of this summer in water temps of 26-28C as I swim up to 3.5 hours out there. Wimp, perhaps, but as you always say Rach, do what works for you. One additional, when it's prime jellyfish time, I slip an all-in-one rash suit over the neoprene shorts/vest; no additional warmth of course, but stops the stingers brilliantly.

      I have a fair bit of bioprene so most of the time im fine. I don't mind what people wear to swim it's about feeling comfortable and able to stay in long enough to enjoy the water in your own way. I like a long swim, it's be nice to have warmer water for longer, training swims get more difficult as it chills down here! Good tip to stop legs coming out the water!
      I also love the all over rashie for a jellyfish sting barrier! 🏊😀

    So helpful. Thank you, Rachel. Is a wetsuit suitable for treading water?

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 роки тому

      Yes, absolutely, it would probably make it easier because of the amount of buoyancy they provide.

    Rachel, thank you for this information. My question is, where do you find wetsuit items, such as separate wetsuit tops or rash vests and wetsuit bottoms for a woman size 16/18? Most of the sites have very small wetsuits for women and all manner of sizes for men 😠. Very stereotypical wouldn’t you say? I want to keep my core warm because I don’t want to be put off by getting so cold it triggers wheezy breathing or irritates a back problem that lives with me. Thank you!

      Hi Jayne, I've seen separates at The Wetsuit Centre in Bournemouth www.wetsuitcentre.co.uk/wetsuits/wetsuit-tops-jackets.html I haven't ever tried them on. I often use gloves, booties and a neoprene hat with my swimsuit rather than a wetsuit or separated. I find they keep me nice and comfortable in the water 🏊😃

    Hi Rachel. I can see that a neoprene hat (1) adds warmth and that a brightly coloured latex one (2) makes a swimmer more visible but what is the point of the black latex caps that I often see people using where I live? I don't see how they can help much with either warmth or visibility. Does a swim cap have a third purpose? - Brian

      Some have thermal properties, most are to prevent rashes from wetsuits.

    Is there a danger of overestimating the time spent in the water by wearing your 2nd option? In the winter our water gets to 55 degrees...which is cold for us. One year I managed to swim the entire year without a wetsuit, but then stayed in too long which resulted in an awful experience. I’m wondering if your 2nd option might work. My hands and feet never bother me in the winter but maybe you’re suggesting that wearing gloves and booties slows the cooling of those very superficial arteries and veins thus allowing one to stay in longer?

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Pat! I used to swim in the winter in a wetsuit with no footwear or gloves, using my hands as one of my indicators - if they went stiff etc to help decide when to get out, but a friend with a lot of experience of training sea rescue organisation technicians said that with the blood running so close to the surface on my hands and feet that getting them cold might be speeding up the process of core body cooling. I added the gloves and booties and was in a winter wonderland! The next winter I just didn't routinely put my wetsuit on, just the gloves and booties. Now I reserve the wettie for when I know I'm going in for a longer time. Each piece of kit has its reason for being in my kit! Rach

    Does anyone know of a wetsuit brand that might fit very big hips?
    The only wetsuits I’ve managed to find with sizes up to my 50” hips are men’s, but my waist is 34”, so men’s wetsuits really aren’t suitable. I’m on a diet at the moment, but would love to get a wetsuit for this Winter!

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Emma, I don't know of a specific brand which would fit the proportions you mention, but it may be worth looking at separates - neoprene jacket and trousers. Also try contacting a tri shop and asking for advice, or potentially one or two of the wetsuit manufacturers. The other option is just to keep getting in in whatever you wear at the moment and see how long you can keep dipping. In the cooler months my water time changes from swimming to dipping really. Good luck with the diet and the wetsuit search 🏊😃

      @@EverydayAthleteRach Thanks, I hadn’t thought about separates so will look at that. I was in Buttermere today with a rash vest on and it was still great and hasn’t starting to sting yet, so I might last longer than I thought (and possibly long enough to fit into something a bit warmer by November). In previous years, I had pretty much stopped going by now so I’m getting into unchartered territory… I’ll see where I’m at a the end of next month and maybe speak to the specialists.
      Thanks for the great videos!

      Hi Emma. I have been searching for women’s wetsuit shorts and a separate top and I telephoned Two Bare Feet who were helpful but they, like many other companies, seem to have lots of small women’s sizes and lots of men’s larger sizes. I sent for a shortie wetsuit from Amazon and measured myself as it instructed, but when I tried it on it was far too big and though it was sold as unisex, it was most definitely man shaped so I have to return it. I have sent for Two Bare Feet’s quarter zip rash vest after they talked me through measurements etc so I will see what it is like. I’m not too keen to go into a shop and do try ons for obvious reasons so I am interested to hear how you fair in your search? Take care and good luck! Jayne
