I still haven't been in a relationship with another person, so I can't really say I can honestly, truly, completely relate to this song. But from the moment I heard it I fell in love with it.
The song sings the story of a man who is still in love with his ex-girlfriend while she has found another man to be with that makes her even 'happier' (hence the title of the song).
I have been listening to this song for weeks now and, because of my addiction to it basically, I even learned to play it on guitar and piano. I considered the idea of making a piano cover of this song, as a tribute, but one morning I got struck by a really simple yet powerful idea: this song would sound even more powerful and emotional slowed down probably.. I NEED TO DO IT.
So I download the song, opened my DAW and started working; after I was done I said to myself: you know what, I don't wanna just slow it down and call it a day, I wanna other people to hear what I hear while listening to this song.. I want them to 'feel it too' (as Ed sings), so I decided to create a whole soundscape around it made with reverbs and sound Effects (mainly wind sounds, bar sounds and city sounds).
After not much time I was basically looking for sounds that helped narrating the story, like the sound of cars passing by when the man was 'walking down the 29th' and the sound of a door opening when 'I saw you walking inside a bar' and so on..
Now may you allow me a few words about the background image
By that time I had basically recreated the whole scene inside my mind, I had a clear picture of the street, the bar, and even of the girl.
The place I had in my mind was a street located in Brighton, England I visited several years ago. Sadly I looked for some pictures of said place, but I couldn't find anything that worked, both online and among my own photos I took.
I spent more than one hour looking for the right image, something that resembled even slightly the scenario I had in my mind, but I couldn't find anything that convinced me..
But finally, I encountered this painting by Peter Brown that wasn't perfect to be honest, but had something special about me that just caught me, and worked perfectly with the song and the feeling I was going for
Maybe it was that it represented the corner of a street (just like where the bar was located in my mind), or maybe the fact that it looked like the scene it was set by the sea, or maybe even the umbrella.. I just could not resist, and so I decided to use that image.
I still had to flip it and change the colors to better fit the image in my had, but anyway I'm pretty happy with the result.

She wasn't happy with me. Six months later, I realize it now. When she first left, I was so desperate to get her back. But now I can see it's better that she's gone, happy with her new boyfriend. And she _is_ happy. Very happy. When she comments "I love you" under his social media posts, I can hear her saying it in her cute voice as if she's right next to me. The way she used to tell me, during our first year together, when we were so in love with each other we felt like we could conquer the world. But I changed. The man she loved disappeared, swallowed by depression, jealousy, and self-pity. She tried so hard to save us. I just couldn't see it at the time. She tried until she had given all she could, and then she left. It tore both of us apart. But she's learning to love again. Her new boyfriend is everything I used to be, a me from an alternate universe had I just stuck to my convictions and not allowed my mental state to overtake me.
I have to let her go now. Because one of us will always be unhappy, and I would rather it be me than have to put her through that. I still love her, after all.

This reminds me of my guy best friend. We knew each other for a whole year and we would always tease each other and joke around. He was one of the reasons why I would get out of bed every morning and smile looking into the mirror thinking about him. After about 3-4 months of getting to know each other better, we started catching feelings. Then one day, he started to ignore me. I'm a fairly emotional person, so I get brought to tears when I'm angry or sad, but I prefer not to cry. This leads to me having very few to zero mental breakdowns. After years of doing this, whenever I have a mental breakdown, I beat myself up for it and ask myself why it feels so weird.

Can someone please tell me how people edit in the laughs and talking & the reverb and such in the back? Ive been trying to learn how to do this for sooo long.
it's all a matter of downloading the song, putting it into a music software and then spending minutes or hours searching for the perfect sound on UA-cam and other websites. Once you've found your sound effects (the hardest part) you just have to download them and add them to the song with the music software (DAW), even Audacity can do the job
