  • Sam recently built up a brand new 2024 Trek Emonda ALR, however, since this was an entirely custom specification, it made him think about whether or not he actually spent too much money on it. Do you think he did?

It doesn’t matter how much you paid for this bike. If you love it, then it’s worth every penny!

I agree with your comment but this bike should only be 3k max, I bought a rim brake Caad 12 in 2018 with ultegra for £1500 new, it was 7.5 kg standard, with a wheel saddle and bar swap for about 1k it would weigh 7kg, I know it was rim brake but perfect in summer, 4.5k for an average bike is a big problem for the bike industry

15 years ago I would have been all about specs and price, but I totally agree if you have a bike that fits and you love it, it doesn't matter. And the cool thing about wheels is you can always swap them out.

I suppose it comes down to the definition of value. If you keep the bike for 10yrs and put 1,000's of kms on it, then you have yourself a banger.

Given the state of the bike industry and the surplus of bikes I’d say this was a solid deal.
You got the bike that YOU wanted not the “value” package the manufacturer decides for the consumer.
Smiles for miles has always been how I rate a bike and if you smile after each ride, when you look at it when walking by it then you got the right one.

AMEN, which or how many make you smile PW. Luv how you summed that up... Point Blank. As a pro photographer I buy what suits my genre's. Different tools for different jobs. I don't use cheap linesman players. I use Klien in the good USA since 1894 in Chicago. I only use Milwaukee cordless, and Jackhammers Hilti T72 ( ALL DAY @ Night. ) Yes its the person behind the tool, BUY for precision, and speed when big $ are on the line....
Some many kind folks here , I'm blessed and very greatful.........

Totally agree. I built a Ritchie road logic steel bike with rim brake Ultegra and a powermeter, my ideal length stem, my preferred carbon handlebars and scribe wheels and nice Conti 4 season 30 mm tires. I spent well over 3000 EUR for a steel bike with a mechanical groupset but it is dialed in for me, I love the looks and all I need is a set of Chinese carbon wheels for the few crits I do. Finding parts, thinking things through, (partly) building it- that is all part of the reward and I love this bike more than any I have ever owned.

I built an Emonda ALR, purple flip, with Ultegra mechanical, Mavic Cosmic SLR wheels, carbon seat post and handlebar. I love it. Don’t care if someone thinks I overspent on this build.

Giant TCR 105 = 2500 euro for a 8.3kgs bike. Replace stock wheels with your wheels + better tires and other discs, and you spend 4000-4500 euro for a carbon bike with good warranty, 7.5kgs and the only work is swapping wheels.

I will go with mech ultegra( 500$ on eBay with no crank), magene power or just Cannondale si sl because they are light and for me like a bike mechanic the best crank system. Wheels are based for your needs. 30-50mm

Oh just remember a nine velo wheels, i saw on hambini videos, great wheels with weight and cost. 1230gr for 1000$ 😅. Beautiful and vacuumed hub. Can buy a ceramic bearing and swap to wheels+500$. So as u can see. 6000$ for bike with alloy frame and hunt wheels and di2 ultegra is nonsense

IMHO it is all about fun riding a bike. The best value for money is that bike which you can afford and delivers the most fun.

You did good bro.....I bought an emonda a few years ago and all I've done is change the saddle and put a little bit bigger tubeless tires on it and it's just a blast to ride. I love it so much.

There is something about building your own bike and picking all the bits you want! Every bike I own is built up from a frame and I wouldn't do it any other way.

I'm doing something similar and ended up just short of $5000 USD. (Yoeleo frame, Elite Drive wheels, and Ultegra Di2 groupset. (I'm actually using a new DurAce Crank with power meter from another bike from recent recall of my old crank and put the Ultegra crank with no power meter on my old bike which is retired to my Kickr)

I built up a custom 2019 Madone SLR with SRAM Red AXS and ENVE Foundation 65 for a little less $9500 (the frameset was old new stock). Expensive AF, but it’s a great value because A) I love it and don’t care what I paid, and B) This bike new in Trek’s shop would’ve easily been 11k if not more.

  • @davidcarino6500

Very nice build! Most riders should not be spending over 5k. I've built many bikes. You have to be handy and shop around and save a lot of money like he did. I found almost new Dure Ace 10 speed $500- titanium frame set for $500- ( i did some polishing, new decals) new wheels, bar stem etc spent under 2k for an awesome bike.

If it's something you enjoy and will get use from, it's worth spending money on, if you can afford it.
I'm currently building up a Trek Domane SLR (ex-bike shop demo frame) with SRAM Force AXS (ebay deal on an unused groupset that someone took off their new bike to replace with Red). It's probably going to cost a bit over £2k and I'll look at a better set of wheels later for Sunday best. I have built up a tri bike for £800 and a gravel-y bike for £600.

I have been riding Hunt wheels for the last 5 years and have not switched. They are amazing! I have built up two road bikes with them and a gravel bike. The tubeless setup is always easy, the wheels are durable, fast and light

As a beginner to ebikes, even woth a background in mechanical and electrical engineering, it's still overwhelming at times. Trools, paid marketing ect, ect.... No being rude just facts. Another kind Gentleman told me Cannondale carbon with Bosch speed motor coupled with 500w battery. Grx 600 lists for approximately $7200 plus tax. 1 medium on sale for $6800 out the door. Black . Not the topstone lefty which is nice as well. Also the frame flexible to 15mm. thoughts by all greatly welcomed. All the best, with all endeavors Josh.

Those wheels would fold up like a frigging deckchair if I were to ride them, not everyone weighs 60kg. Try doubling that and see how'd they'd fare. Tried a set of Hunt wheels once and the spokes did nothing but protest by constantly creaking.

Yes, there are bad values for the money . Unfortunately, there seems to be a level of equipment ignorance when it comes to bikes for many. I'd say the litmus test is did you have to ignor real responsibilities to purchase this. If no, kids are eating, wifes not left out, billls paid, then you got a decent deal in todays world..

Honestly who cares, it’s not a washing machine or humdrum A-B car. Some people see every purchase as some kind of budget target or a chance to out acumen others. No need to justify yourself to these dullards, enjoy your unique bike and ride the wheels off it 👌🏼

There are a few chaps riding in my riding group with "Light Bicycle" brand wheels (both rim brake and disc) for several years with no issues (road use mainly, very light gravel). I built my wheels with LB rim-brake rims, Shimano hubs, pillar spokes and nipples.
Friends of friends also ride Tokyo wheels and Far Sports wheels with no issues either.
