    Fun fact: switch pullers weren't made for switches. They were originally made to pull small cable connectors, like how it was used in the video at about 1:40.

    When you are trying to dessolder and the freaking pin does not want to get out, try soldering 😉, with a little more then needed. Clean the board to clear the flux with isopropyl alcohol. Then start dessolder again. Usually works.

    • @guycxz
      @guycxz 2 роки тому +2

      I find I prefer leaving the flux on the board at least until I'm done with it. That way I already have flux applied when soldering the new switches.

    Lmao i literally had the same experience since my first project into this rabbit hole was upgrading my 40$ fullsize "gaming keyboard" with cheap outemu brown switches. Desoldering was such a huge pain in the ass, since i had to use a iron sucker to suck out the desoldered iron.

    • @Mikehaelohim

    You've probably gotten this advice already but in order to be RoHS compliant certain products will instead use lead-free solder, which is much harder to work with/desolder. This can be partially remedied by reflowing the joint with your own leaded solder on top of the preexisting solder.

    On Amazon I bought a 60% hot swappable based on the AK61 for a whole $12.59 dollars. The keyboard came with pudding keycaps and outemu red switches. I ended up doing a lube job on the outemu switches and ended up doing mod on the stabilizers as well. Now the typing and the feel of the keys when pressed feels more like a $80 dollar keyboard from a known brand name.

  • @friendlyfiregaming4601
    @friendlyfiregaming4601 2 роки тому

    Great video! I did something similar on a cheap Amazon keyboard that turned out great. A tip for using the desoldering gun, make sure the lips of the tip are making good contact and completely seal the board. You can achieve this by holding it at 90 degrees to the board. Once that is done, wait about a half second, and pull the trigger, while rotating the tip around the pin in a circular motion. That'll clean up any extra solder that may be holding the leg in. Only spend about 3-4 seconds of applying heat to the joint at a time, else you can risk delaminating the board and causing the via to rip.

    • @friendlyfiregaming4601
      @friendlyfiregaming4601 2 роки тому

      EDIT: oh yeah, and if you ever rip a via, don't sweat it. Get some thin 30AWG solid core wire, scrape the coating off what is left of the trace on the PCB, and solder to the copper of the trace. Then solder to your switch leg.
      Pace Worldwide did an excellent video on PCB repair. Just substitute where they use copper clad or trace repair metal with the wire. ua-cam.com/video/IBi40aq4-t0/v-deo.html

    My grandma bought me a keyboard on Walmart for like $43 dollars in a few months ago for playing Roblox and now i still use it but now it's for playing Minecraft on Xbox One. It is the Strategy of Monster Games. It have blue Chinese switches with no mark, and black ANSI keycaps, with a special letter that only Latin America and Spain have, the ñ. But it's painted onto the keycap, not engraved like the other keycaps. And haves RGB with a rainbow sequence, and you can choose how the RGB are going to move through the switches. 👀

    Let's say you owned the ONN mechanical keyboard for a couple of years and really liked it: the RGB lighting, the clicky sounds, the feel of the keys, the solid heavy aluminum case, that it's full size, the braided cable, etc. However, let's say that random keys are not responding to normal pressure, and you're legally restricted from using a soldering iron because of what happened last time.
    Let's also say that you were looking for something about double the price, so somewhere just under $100.
    What mechanical keyboard would you recommend?
    It's frustrating because a couple of the RGB lights have gotten messed up, and like I said I'll be going along and suddenly the "h" key won't work unless I press and hold it down... then it types half a dozen "hhhhhhh"s. Now that key is working again... will it be the "B" next time? A different key? The software also is buggy, with it occasionally losing its mind and making the "W" key a backspace key and other weird nonsense.
    Hot swappable would be a bonus since I'm so incompetent with the soldering iron, but not a requirement. USB ports would also be a cool bonus but not make or break. I don't like wireless, I do like the clicky feel, I LOVE the RGB because my keyboard in on a drawer so often mostly or fully hidden from light. While I don't use the numberpad, I do use PrintScreen, delete, Home, arrow keys, and the F keys quite a bit.
    Thoughts?
