As a career painter: respirator bro! Even the stuff that doesn't seem bad is bad and there's always more of it floating around than you can see. Everything else looked good
Are you kidding me ???? I’ve been scraping off our deck boards with hand scrapers like a diy Cinderella For days now not even half done !!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Thank you Maldo......finally ! Something that actually works removing paint and deck stain. After I spent $ 1500.00 on dumb liquid stain remover, including all the top brands, hiring professional deck cleaners I smartened up and went to You Tube for more information. Diamabrush did the job in 2 days. It cost 60.00 and a sander 40.00 at Lowes. Amazing !
I've used both. And both work great. The Diamond wheel can be "very" abrasive. Lightly glide it across the decking to prevent swirls. I use them to remove peeling and flaking stain. With a good restraining job it can look brand new again.
I own a painting business and was in a group on fb where I came across somone who posted this, so I came over to UA-cam and here I am, nice video, I think I’m going to pick one of these up and give it a go on some clapboards! It looks mean as shit but when I see it in action which is why I came over to UA-cam it works really nice 👌🏼 Thanks!
Thank you for watching yes I was hoping to help people in my situation where the paint was really thick to cover up old wood boards .. i will have an updated video showing the completed deck came out really nice
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO!!! I purchased the diambrush after watching your video and was able to knock out a 26x12 foot deck in about 2 4:17 hours of work. This after my wife and I struggled for two 7 hour days trying to scrape the texturized paint off the deck. I would highly recommend the Diamabrush to anyone struggling to remove gritty paint off a deck. Thanks again to you for posting this video!!!
We just want to thank you for posting this bc we could not get our Kilz Porch & Patio paint off our deck! It's just like your Behr. This tool saved us!
My Son and I were strolling through our local Lowes and we happened upon a display of these. There was a sign attached to the display with a price of $7.95. Having just bought one a few weeks earlier he knew the actual price was $ 57.95. We grabbed three apiece and proceeded to the checkout. Upon ringing everything up the price came close to $400 including other items purchased. Playing dumb Im Like WOE! Explaining the signage that said $7.95 she went and looked and it was there. She honored the price and we got 3 apiece for less than $30.00 each. I don't feel so bad for them when a 2x4 costs $12.00!
What you get your 2x4 for $12.00 each they must be seconds or have either carpenter ants or bee's living in them last week at the lumber yard a 2x4 was priced over $20..
Great vid! Thank you. Ive got a very similar set up. My deck is 9 yrs old but looks like a 30 yr old deck in some spots. The builders used the same type of paint (im the 2nd owner) and the rot in some spots is unbelievable. Its like the paint traps all the moisture and creates pockets of decay. Again thank you for the info
yes that paint creates moisture pockets and rots the wood (the product does not soak into wood all it does is covers it and as the wood expanded and contracts it does not strech with the wood creating cracks and fails trapping water between the wood and paint .. i am not sure i it was not prepped correctly before application but i would never use this to paint deck ... and what a mess to get it off ... that's why i used the Diamabrush it save my ass in time and energy and saves me the hassle of renting a big machine for this project. $100 bucks for two disks well spent money...
as as reminder no need to apply pressure let the tool do the work and keep moving the tool to reduce swirls hold as a slight side angle practice on in a area you will not notice to get the hang of it
I used one to strip a 12 x 7 varnished deck then used it to "grind" exterior sanded stucco-like paint from a concrete wall, about 3' high and 10 or so foot long. I still have it in my angle grinder bag with about 20% of the tooth left. I'll get one more small job out of it, someday. Great tool! Just don't expect a sanded floor finish from it.
Just about done with my 380 sqft deck. Took the entire thing down to solid bare wood. Left no trace of previous paint, all three colors/coats of it. The blade worked great but I had to up my angle grinder because I burnt up the first one. I wish my knees held up as good as the Diamabrush blade did.
I've never used one of these, but like he said, make sure you inspect closely, every place there's a stud, to see if there is a nail or screw above the wood surface. To me, that looks like the only down fall.
Wow, that might have been something to know about.. Before I ended up just flipping all my boards on my deck I could not get that paint coating off. Tried floor sanders and stuff.
Just a tip, I’d go over the spots with nails with the Diablo disc first then use Diamabrush. You may still have to use two pads, but then your not worrying on nails and screws that are sticking out👍
Best product on the market! Paid $60.00 for the 4 1/2 in disk. I would have paid a $100.00! This disk is no B.S. Definitely need a respirator not dust mask, eye goggles not glasses and wouldn’t hurt to have a fan to blow all the dust away from you. I restored a painted deck and this saved me weeks of stripping off paint. I tried scraping and psi washing with a turbo nozzle not even close to what this tool will do!
You can commonly rent a floor machine from Home Depot rental centers which have the same disc on a larger scale. Used it to remove tar/glue from some beautiful late 1800's hard wood floor that the business at one time placed vinyl and then short carpet over.
my PW was on the fritz, went to honey Depot and some kid chewing gum directed me to PW,'s. I stopped him and said listen to me I want to rent one no not buy one. He pointed to an area of the store and said if we have them they are over in the corner. Ya and it was a toy. maybe wash a car with it. Point, not all home depot's rent this stuff. Got mine fixed and glad I did. do not put Behr stain on deck or your Sanders, washers won't touch it
i need to ask you another question please. what brand angel grinder and dust shroud do you use (you don't use a shroud though do you?)? i bought an Avid grinder and herzo dust shroud and I do not believe they fit together. thanks.
I'm not a painter, rather handyman. Customer's house is a mansion cabin in the woods. She is a widow on a fixed income and can't afford a new deck, as I first suggested. I know her well enough after many years of working on broken things at her place, to know she prefers a cheaper solution than spending the money to replace things that need replacing. it's often a chore to explain things to her about doing it properly. I have learned that my way is not always what she wants. I have done tiling, doors, windows, and a slew of other fixes for her. This week I'm taking many layers of paint off the last section of an OLD deck this week. Completed large portion of deck last summer, finishing smaller deck this week. using 60grit flap discs. I was looking for other options, as the flap discs last about 15-30 minutes. I just saw, harbor freight has Warrior 60grit flap discs this week for $1.99/ea. I'll buy ten of those. YES, it's takes the wood off if I push too hard, but this deck must be 30 years old and has cupped areas, for areas that go 1/8" deep, and require grinding the wood down to get the old paint out. I cannot justify a $50 wheel that can't handle screws. and I will go back and pull old screws out and install hex screws after I take the paint off. I explained many options to the customer. she decided she likes the new look in the deck boards after grinding the paint off. Which has a distressed/worn/beat up look, NOT smooth. As a woodworker, we call it character. it gives the deck an old worn look, but reveals the fresh wood below the layers of paint and worn wood on top. and this deck is a GIANT wrap around deck. replacing would cost $25,000-$30,000. not an option for her. Giving the existing deck new life that will out last this customer's life. And someone else can replace the entire deck boards after she passes away. Last summer I used a deck sander first, cost $300. I ended up only using 20grit. b/c a majority of the deck boards were badly cupped after 30 years, it didn't do great. Took off about 50% of the paint. I hired a kid to help me bring w/ flap discs. Took a week. Sometimes it's not about the BEST way, but rather what makes sense for the customers based on their age and income. I can stain the deck every year for her for a few hundred dollars. it'll be fine for her until the next owner decides what they wanna do. It took me a few years to relax into allowing myself to do things for customers on the cheap. I don't always like it, and find it frustrating, but I end up with customers that wanna tell me how to do it cheaper, while also telling me it's acceptable for them, even though I strongly tell them I would never do it that way. I've had to learn to bend in this way. I think it's a good practice to be able to do what the customer wants rather than what I want.
+1 ... Excellent ... Man O man do I have a painted patio deck for the DiamondBrush gismo. .. This painted deck has met its match! .. Thanks, Maldo72 Big Time.
i will have a up coming video on this question ... this disk is the same as 80 grit sand paper .... for i did not have to sand it any more after because i uses a solid color to re-do the deck after i sanded ... if you were doing transparent stain etc you could go over it again with 120 grit to make it perfect but again this is a old deck and the wood was not perfect wanted to hide some of the imperfections of the older pieces of deck board
Same question- removing layers of old paint off an old deck and i want to stain it (navy blue) afterward. Curious if this might be the product for me. Stripping isnt great because the boards are concaved and im told paint eaters will not remove all of the paint. Its been frustrating trying to figure out how to do this.
I have 3" tongue & groove porch boards - probably yellow pine which we had painted years ago. We now want to remove that color. Is this tool too hard for those boards? Wondering if we should use paint remover?
I have used it and I really found it to be awesome. The issue I had is that the blades came out from the disc and one hit me in the chest and left a really significant bruise. The company said I was getting to close to the side of the disk and the plastic was wearing the plastic off. I asked why don't you make the disk of metal? and was told it is a dollar and cents issue. So I bought the vacuum guard and unfortunatley cant get as close to the edge as I would like. However it does take the paint off like I have never experienced.
yes i started with that and it would have worked if it was only paint but this deck had may thick layers of "deck over paint stuff on it too " need something that would take the stuff down fast and get down to the raw deck boards
Spent a $100 at home soppy and rented a drum sander and sanded a deck to the same condition of this video iFit a 450 sf deck in less than 2 hours. Much less labor than an angle grinder on your knees and out of breath like this guy!
Thank you for watching..... yes, but I did this over a few days when I had time. If you rent a drum sander I think they charge you by the day which would not have worked out for me.. ... also with a drum sander, you can't do the tight spots like the rails. out of breath??? really also a drum sander only works with a flat decks and my deck is not all flat
Can you please share what stain you used after removing the paint, did you match with 'solid color stain'? my deck has green color paint, I am thinking to remove using your method but wonder if it will be clean enough to go transparent stain or need to go with solid color stain. thanks
I'm actually thinking about doing this this weekend.. would you mind sharing what your next step was? Did you repaint or stain if so which did you do and is it lasting? Also whether you painted or stained did you use any sealant on it? I'd appreciate your feedback asap. Tia!
when using this tool you need to get a feel of it (test in a small place to get use to it ) will have an up date video soon on what i used and how did it last .......
Hi! Tnx for the video!!! But Tell me please What do you recommend after applying the paint(stain), because it will be with indentations from your beautiful tool and these indentations will be very visible on the new paint.
Don’t sand with 120 grit. 120 is too fine and will not prepare the wood to the proper profile to accept the stain. Better off using Diablo 60 grit random orbital net style. It’s faster and will open up the wood much better for that stain to penetrate. 120 will compress the fiber. Great video showing the dimabrush though! It’s an awesome tool that saves a ton of time.
to be honest, I will post an update soon I did not even bother to sand any further after I did this ... it created a nice surface for the stain / and or paint to be applied where it opened up the wood for excellent absorption... into the wood ....
Did you by chance power wash your deck before using the Diamabrush paint remover? I'm getting ready to work on my deck this weekend and obviously don't want extra steps, if not necessary. Thanks so much for making the video...I'm super excited to see how it turns out :)
i power washed the deck just to get all the loose stuff off .. yes i will have an update soon on the deck and what it looks like know.. thank you for watching
hmmm if it can take off thick paint I am sure it would not be a problem... but for that i would def get the shield that goes around the tool to protect your self from flying stuff
Is there some technique to using this it keeps biting the wood unless I just use the corner of it do u put a lot of press on it Or u just glide it on the wood.thanks
Thanks for the great video. This will be my upcoming spring project on a new home we just built. How did the deck turn out for you? I’m gonna look for your update video if you made one. Cheers Bro!
I came out really good will have a update video on the deck soon wanted to wait a while to see how the deck /stain paint worked and of if it peeled off before i make an update video
@@maldo72 nice! Glad to hear. I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of videos on this blade. Before I was dreading this project but now I’m kinda pumped about getting started. Looking forward to seeing your “after” video. Cheers and happy 2022! Here’s hoping it’s better than 2021. 😎
If you got it back to bare wood I’d probably use a semi trans oil for the floor. Would need maintenance pressure wash and reapply the semi trans every 2-3 years. But it’ll never peel. Can use same on railings or just use a solid stain color on railings like white which can look nice with stained floor. The solid stain on verticals last unlike on a horizontal floor
I used a buffer and a 7” pad with 60grit took it out fast best part is a buffer you can control the speed a grinder could get little dangerous! Not for me but a novice would hurt themself 200%
What is the hand tool you’re using? Sorry,in the past I’ve hired people to do what needs to be done around the house, but now I want to learn to do it myself…..
1, you should unplug the angle grinder before changing discs, if you value having all your fingers. 2, random orbital sanders with 60 grit paper is MUCH safer, much cheaper and works just as well. Run a hammer along the deck and sort out all the loose nails before you start sanding. A deck that size should take you less than a day. Oh, and get one of those dollar store yoga mats or knee pads for this kind of work.
I started out with 60 grit sandpaper and in theory yes using 60 grit would seem logical but with sand paper it wears out super fast and gets clogged with the thick paint used ... with this disk zero clogging/burning paint ..
yes used knee pads before I shot the video ... it was at the end of the day really tired and the knee pad straps were hurting the back of my leg that's why I took them off ... (I had cheap knee pads)
there were no nails used and the paint was so thick could not see some of the screws plus who ever put the screws in stripped the head making it hard to remove... used a sanding disk to file them down flush with board
I have immediate recent experience with this and 100% guarantee you that no random orbit (or detail sander) with 60 grit paper (or even 40 grit) works this well.
thank you for watching.. the reason why the first disk was worn down so much ... was because I was hitting a lot of screws that were popped up and covered by the thick layers of paint that i could not see... if you were just removing paint it should last a long time
slightly only if you let the to ol sit in one spot ... but for this old deck there was no need for perfection i will have an updated videos at the end o the month ...
Can you please tell me what size, if there is a size angle grinder should I buy? I went to Home Depot and they couldn't help me at all, which standard! I am assuming a respirator is some type of mask, am I correct? If there is anything else I need please tell me. I am a 72 yoa Woman, not that that should matter, but is it really as easy as you say? Thank you in advance for your help!
hi and thank you for watching .. 1) a standard-size angle grinder from any tool supply place like harbor freight will do. 2) yes I would recommend a dusk mask. 3) Maybe heavy gloves to protect your hands if you want. 4) knee pads...
Man that thing don't mess around I wonder how it would work on a cedar shingle sided house? It would sure be a putty knife for scraping the peeling paint and holding up the big gigantic grinder with a 7-inch disc of 36 grit my shoulders are doing that...
it should work great plus it does not require alot of pressure to work just glide it along surface and let the tool do the work check out the other video I made showing it real time how fast it works

I used the diamond brush and it worked like a charm, I had to sand it afterwards though as it lefts some abrasion marks.
once i painted the deck you really cant see the abrasion marks
I have 3" tongue & groove porch boards - probably yellow pine which we had painted years ago. We now want to remove that color. Is this tool too hard for those boards? Wondering if we should use paint remover?
i would try it in a place where you wont see it ... go easy and light pressure so you can get a even removal of paint ......
Thank you for watching ...
What speed angle grinder did you use? Thanks.
Hitachi 4-1/2-in 6.2-Amp 10,000 rpm if i remember correctly
In big open areas like this I’m always curious why people don’t use flooring sanders?
Much quicker and it’s a finish sanded result.
yes i started with that and it would have worked if it was only paint but this deck had may thick layers of "deck over paint stuff on it too " need something that would take the stuff down fast and get down to the raw deck boards
Awesome, thanks for the information.
How does this work against deck board nails that are driven top down instead of toenailed? Have to drive the nails deeper first?
you would have to drive the nails deeper to avoid hitting the tool ..
Very impressive!!! Sadly, my deck is too far gone. Board replacement in spots to hold me over until new deck prices come down.
Good luck with the wood prices coming down with the heat wave and new forest fires starting
Don't count on those prices coming down. Look into getting composite decking like Trex. Good stuff that will last.
@@Boomhauer333 we will be going composite. Dont want to have to deal with wood and the maintenance.
@@bobziadie2988 That's the way to go. You'll be very happy with it.
I am new at this. Home ownership is great. I want ot try doing some projects myself if all possible. I hope it is not too hard to use
before using the tool i would suggest that you practice on a few panels to get the hang of the tool
Can you please share what stain you used after removing the paint, did you match with 'solid color stain'? my deck has green color paint, I am thinking to remove using your method but wonder if it will be clean enough to go transparent stain or need to go with solid color stain. thanks
i went with a solid color stain will have an update soon on how the deck turned out after two winters
But Tell me please What do you recommend after applying the paint(stain), because it will be with indentations from your beautiful tool and these indentations will be very visible on the new paint.
i will have an updated video soon
I bought one of those tools and it is well worth the money.
💯
Definitely "the right tool" for that job. Only thing better would be an upright machine running multiple heads.
Is there a similar tool to strip the paint in a swimming pool with plaster underneath?
not sure
Thank you so much, I have a painted deck that looks awful. I’m definitely going to give this a shot.
thank you for watching will have an update video soon of what the deck looks like know
Don’t sand with 120 grit.
So if there are nails, can you still use the dianabrush or you have to hammer the nails in further?
the layers were so thick if was hard to tell where some of the screws were..
What’s your thoughts on using that to remove dried up stucco on a fiberglass deck?
hmmm if it can take off thick paint I am sure it would not be a problem... but for that i would def get the shield that goes around the tool to protect your self from flying stuff
@@maldo72 thank you for replying. Do you think that it would score up the fiberglass?
Is there some technique to using this it keeps biting the wood unless I just use the corner of it do u put a lot of press on it Or u just glide it on the wood.thanks
I angle the tool and let it do its work (i just let if glide over it ) no pressure needed ... you have to get the feel of it ...
@@maldo72 thank you
Thanks for the great video.
Have very similar deck, and already bought that disk. What kind of stain would you recommend for a such deck?
will have a follow up video soon on that
If you got it back to bare wood I’d probably use a semi trans oil for the floor. Would need maintenance pressure wash and reapply the semi trans every 2-3 years. But it’ll never peel. Can use same on railings or just use a solid stain color on railings like white which can look nice with stained floor. The solid stain on verticals last unlike on a horizontal floor
Does this work on decks wit Deck Over on it. Mine is peeling and looks awful and I want it gone.
yes my deck had thick layers of "deck over" and it took it right off ..
So this technique is something I’d want to do only if the deck had been painted with that think paint that fills cracks?
yes
Thank you for the awesome advice! Helped assure me before investing the $50
Glad it helped!
Actually they say that if you use a straight back and forth movement instead of a circular motion, you won’t get any of the swirls.
I used a buffer and a 7” pad with 60grit took it out fast best part is a buffer you can control the speed a grinder could get little dangerous! Not for me but a novice would hurt themself 200%
it takes only a few practice runs to get used to the tool not that bad
What type of sander would u use after....orbital sander?
For the small areas I used a mouse sander where the tool did not reach
I always say when you have the right tool the job goes much quicker and easier.
I though that was Mr. Stanly that said there's the right tool for the right job back in the '60's...
What do you use on the rails ? I have the same problem
check out part 2
ua-cam.com/video/cSEAxonNkhg/v-deo.html you can used the tool very lightly ... and for the tighter spaces use a mouse sander
What is the hand tool you’re using? Sorry,in the past I’ve hired people to do what needs to be done around the house, but now I want to learn to do it myself…..
angle grinder
I would use this on a vertical surface or a smaller area. For a large area like this a drum sander would have made this a gravy job.
Wow...I've got a big deck and after you did that small area the disc looked worn down a good amount. I'd probably need 10+ discs
thank you for watching.. the reason why the first disk was worn down so much ... was because I was hitting a lot of screws that were popped up and covered by the thick layers of paint that i could not see... if you were just removing paint it should last a long time
I think you can buy replacement inserts for the disk. Talk to a concrete polishing contractor. He could tell you where to buy them
sure update when you find out
Thanks for posting
What did you use for the railings?
I used this tool (lightly going over them) and a palm sander did the trick
Looks good, but I'd recommend some hearing protection. Those types of things will destroy your hearing.
Doesn't using a grinder for sanding leave un-even surfaces?
slightly only if you let the to
ol sit in one spot ... but for this old deck there was no need for perfection i will have an updated videos at the end o the month ...
I had to use this on deck over and work well
If you have a variable speed grinder they work much better at slower speed it won’t heat up as much and last longer
good point
Man that thing don't mess around I wonder how it would work on a cedar shingle sided house?
It would sure be a putty knife for scraping the peeling paint and holding up the big gigantic grinder with a 7-inch disc of 36 grit my shoulders are doing that...
it should work great plus it does not require alot of pressure to work just glide it along surface and let the tool do the work check out the other video I made showing it real time how fast it works
@@maldo72 yes I enjoyed the video a lot I'm going to pick up two of these time to repaint my house cedar shingles and on the North side where it gets blasted all the time that's where I think I'll use it thank you very much for the info
Thanks a bunch!
. Just tested this out and it is going to be such a timesaver
Thank you for watching will have an updated video soon of how the deck looks now ... after it was painted...
Great man !!
thank you for watching glad it helped you
Hi! Can you use this for a fence?
yes
Thanks man, going to save a lot of my time I think!
Glad I could help!
Does it ruin the scraper if you hit a nail or screw? Great video .Thank you.
yes it will chew up the blades if you run over to many nails
@@maldo72 Thanks.
What do you attach this too?
angle grinder
Does it sand the wood?
yes its considered 80grit
can you use a random orbital sander with this?
Sorry you can't
Thank you for responding. I did learn which tool to use and bought it on Amazon. I am very glad for your videos and can't wait to do my deck myself.
Anyone have any recommend concrete exterior paint.
hmmm maybe a good idea never tried it
How do I get the rails and bannister
check out part 2 it shows ow i got those areas and for the reall tight areas i used a "mouse sander"
is it safe to remove the safety guard ? i can’t fit it on my grinder with the safety guard on it. HELP!
yes just wear protective glasses
Very helpful 👍
Glad it was helpful!
May I recommend a dust mask?
yes thank you ..
Thanks
Great info
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you man! I was busting my ass standing
thx for watching
3:40 demonstration starts. You're welcome.
i added anther video check it out give more detail
Can this be used in paint that's on concrete?
sorry not sure ... it might wear down really fast if used on concrete
3:45 he actually starts removing paint
