If you're new here welcome! My name is Laura Mullen Vermilye and I am an iron casting metal artist. Being a cast iron artist is an interesting - and at times tough journey, but the rewards far exceed all challenges. While working with cast iron to create my art I am exposed to an amazing community of artists who are as dedicated and passionate as I am. The cast iron art culture is a major influence in my life and on my work and I want to share this artistic adventure with anyone who is interested in seeing hard working people make amazing art with a hot and dangerous material. To do this, I make vlog style videos on this channel that chronicle the artwork that I am currently making and my journeys in Metalsmithing and iron casting. In between casting and metal art videos you may also see some behind the scenes footage of me roaming around the heart of the Midwest and the Ozarks. Thank you to all you folks that are as interested in my small metal project as you are in my cast iron art! Thanks for tunin' in, and as always - I love you.

    Great work kiddo! Love ya.
The sanding prep on the solder is to remove the oxidation that has formed on the surface, similar to removing the Flux coating from a slick weld or prepping stainless steel and aluminum for a good weld.

Couple thoughts, still loving the outtakes at the end. You mentioned that you started the day not filming some stuff that you didn't think we'd want to watch, that's fine you can't film everything, and sometimes you just need to get stuff done, but you might be underestimating how enjoyable it is to watch someone putter away in the shop, at least to me, I watch these videos while I'm stuck behind a desk wanting to be in my shop.

Great video! Just found your channel and I’m loving your work. I’ve been thinking about my grandfather, whose hobby was woodworking for most of of his life, and one of the things I learned from him was the value of craftsmanship for the sake of craftsmanship. I wish he’d lived long enough to see all the great makers like you who embody that ethos.

Thanks so much for the kind words Tammy! I’ll think about you and your grandfather next time I’m working in my shop!❤️❤️

That multi-stage soldering problem is pretty interesting! I was curious how you were going to deal with it.
You know, I think, or I'm pretty sure, I don't get as nervous as you do when you do things like that. I think it's partly because, you know, nothing I do can affect the outcome (!), but I think it's also partly because I know you're either going to work it out the first time, or work it out the second time, and it's all going to be fine in the end. "It's the journey."
My little heart went pitter-pat when I saw you stick-soldering. I don't have to concern myself with what your instructors might have thought; it's much closer to what I do with electronics, and I think it's good. It also put me in mind of TIG welding, which is the most beautiful and elegant of all the weldings! Dab, dab, dab... just the right amount, not too much, not too little, and I was thinking "Excellent."
And I do have a question... why is your music always perfect? :-)
    Looking forward!

Thanks for the message! I’m so glad you like the music because I do work hard on that aspect of the editing!❤️. I’ve had some people comment that I’m “brave” for using old style music and I’m like… “jazz music is old style…?”
Anywho- my professors probably would’ve been quite appalled at the stick soldering but in the end they would have seen that it was almost the only way!!😅 also I graduated over 10 years ago…(in 2012) - so now my professors are probably just glad I’m still metalsmithing at all!
I’m very happy to hear you don’t get as anxious watching as I do making! If it’s in the video it probably didn’t turn out too bad, and you’re right… I’d just have to start again. But I do know that the second time I do something it’s usually faster and better than the first!😊
Thanks again and I’ll talk to you later!❤️

14:28 Brazing or stick soldering is fun and practical in more ways that one would think.
Everyone who does any metal work should learn the skill

I’m glad you think so! When I was in school stick soldering was heavily discouraged…I thin it was because the professors thought it was seen as unpredictable. It is easy to over-flood your piece with solder- and that can be hard to recover from…. But I’ll use it in extreme circumstances!!😂

@@CastIronGypsy That was the first skill i learned when i went to trade school.
We had to make an ashtray with only stick soldering to pass the soldering exam.
...and i graduated to be a mechanic.

Nice work, Laura! Great advice on sweat soldering. Would pinning the jaws add strength? I know it is art, but someone is bound to try to use it someday. Did you sign it? Also your video production just went up a notch. Not so much the time - take as long as you need - but the intro and the pace of the action. Keep it up!

      Thanks for the kind words!☺️
I did think about pinning the jaws, not so much for the strength but for helping me line everything up… just two rivets in each jaw. But then I decided against it because I was already in a time crunch. Looking back I might pin it… every project that you do informs how you will do the next one!😅
But about the jaw strength, let’s not fool ourselves… the sterling silver rod and tube that is the threaded working mechanism of this piece will strip under heavy use way before the jaws will shear off!!
