  • Late last year, I was approached to make some awards for DD Audio. This is the story of those plaques, from conception to delivery.
    1/32" 360 Brass Sheet - amzn.to/2FlKNn4
    Brass Lacquer - amzn.to/2EV1IPI
    My friend did me a solid by letting me use his Glowforge. If you're thinking about buying one, consider using his referral link: glowforge.com/referred/?kid=5...
    It'll help him and by extension me, since I'll get to play with it more. :D

    Awesome work, Winston! Glad to hear that old podcast episode of mine was useful for your pricing. I'd also highly recommend Made For Profit Podcast's episode on pricing. They've got it pretty dialed.

      Thanks for the tip. I've been binging that series for the past 24 hours now. Perfect timing with WbC around the corner, honestly. Brad's got some super relevant topics.

    Excellent video. Only one suggestion: do not use gloves on the router table. Small bits of it can get snagged and will drag your hand with it. Much safer to use push blocks or just do it with bare hand, being careful about feed direction.

    I can’t speak for everyone who watches your videos but I for one love the quality and am happy to wait if that’s what you need to keep it up. The particular way you’ve gone about learning and the honesty in the way you share what you’ve learned is so very valuable to me. I’ve enjoyed all your videos to date and never been disappointed by the frequency you’ve released them.

      In hindsight, probably not the best move. Rough wood and a cold shop don't always lead to optimal decisions, and with such a small amount of cutter stick out it didn't occur to me at the time. But definitely something to heed more carefully in the future. Thanks for bringing it up.

    nice work! I have a suggestion for you when tapping acrylic or polycarbonate, I build fixtures at work and many are made out of acrylic or polycarbonate, I find that brushing a small amount of windex on the tap helps to keep the tap from loading up so much also seems to give a nicer thread finish! and windex will not harm the finish.

    Try switching out E6000 with Loctite's Go2 Glue. You will get similar results with an easier to use glue. I switched to it two years ago and have never looked back.

    I like the videos where you tackle small run production. I have a single item I made which has gotten popular and I'm enjoying the process of refining and iterating the process. I also ran into the issue where the bit retracts for the tabs and it was quite frustrating, it's like each solution to a problem creates another. In my case I was able to get away with skipping the tabs as the tape workholding is sufficient but, would have preferred tabs.
    Was the brass engraving done on the S3, looked like a spring loaded bit?

    As someone looking to make videos, how do you balance making sure you're getting good footage with your shop productivity?

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  6 років тому

      So on these big projects, it's actually easier. I can focus on the first article first, get a feel for the process, and record on the second or third batch. By doing that I don't need to record the *entire* process and can focus on the interesting parts, transitions in the toolpath, etc. That's less footage to go through later too.
      And eventually you just have a mental check list, like: "Make sure you get a shot of you setting up the stock." (I've forgotten that before.) But once you have that process, it's not that bad. My camera angles are all pretty similar, so I just switch them up to keep it interesting, other than that I'm kind of on autopilot.

    Nice work. What is the hate side of e6000? I have just started using this in a few projects and would like your input. Been watching since the Inkscape videos and always find a tip or two I can use in my shop.

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  6 років тому

      Just toxicity in general. Other than like wood/Elmer's glue, you don't want to breathe in vapors from adhesives and E6000 is notoriously pungent. I've had projects where it still has a faint odor after 72 hours. With my aluminum coaster project, I actually scheduled my glue-up day to provide enough time (including transit time) to ensure the smell had dissipated before delivery.
