- Hey, it's my first PMV! This is a very important project for me, and although it's a little rough around the edges, I'm really proud of it.
So I've had this idea for a while, ever since I listened to Me and My Husband for the first time. I think it really fits Bramblestar and Squirrelflight's relationship well. The meaning I always interpreted in it is of an abusive relationship in which a sick/dying wife doesn't realize she's been emotionally abused her entire relationship and so has a romanticized view of it/depends all her self worth on the love of a husband who'll most likely replace her once she's gone.
The thing is, although most of the fandom has fully accepted the idea that Bramblestar is abusive, Squirrelflight and the canon doesn't think of it that way. But she still has those fears of being replaced once she dies, which is what I feel ties it into this song. On top of that, lines like "Me and My Husband, we are doing better" perfectly describe how I used to look at their relationship and how I'm sure many other people in the fandom did as well. I had this idea that although their relationship was rocky, those problems started and ended with the Power of Three drama, and that everything was perfect after Alderkit and Sparkkit were born. (Oh the naivete. 💀) And I don't think it's a stretch to think Squirrelflight believes something similar. There's some metaphorical stuff here and there like the cat bones, Starclan Squirrelflight, and Jessy being on the high rock. Those things aren't actually happening, they are just representations of Squirrelflight's fears. Bramblestar is terrible, but if Squirrelflight died he wouldn't literally laugh on the highrock right after. (The laughing itself isn't representative of him laughing at Squirrelflight but of him moving on easily enough to be chatting with somebody as if nothing has happened.)
I'll put a frame by frame summary of this PMV and what I intended in the comment section below, so thanks for watching and stay tuned for more content!
Explanation/Scene By Scene Breakdown:
Warning, I'm gonna go full English teacher mode here.
1. The sigh at the beginning is Squirrelflight after realizing how awful her relationship truly is.
2. Squirrelflight watching Alderpaw a nd Sparkpaw's apprenticeship ceremony. She's really proud of them, but tears up realizing they don't need her anymore. She's realizing how old she's getting.
3. Not wanting to disrupt the happiness of the event she backs up and heads out the entrance tunnel to be alone.
4. After the ceremony Bramblestar comes to see her and cheer her up. She's happy about his company and rests her head on him reflecting on how happy she is to be with him again and how much they've gone through as a couple.
4. She looks up to see only small bits of lighter fur from on his chin aging, she touches her own face and realizes how much more graying fur she has. (Yeah I know it looks like markings but I intended the white fur on her mouth/chin and under her eyes to be from aging.)
5. She touches noses with him and tries to stay upbeat but she's feeling a sense of sadness she can't explain.
6. Flashback to Squirrelflight in Bramblestar's storm. She's emotionally devastated after Holly's and Firestar's deaths and Bramblestar's bitterness towards her. Bramblestar glares at her bitterly. But since Jessy has left, he sighs, lets go of his anger, walks up to her and fakes a welcoming smile.
7. He comes up to her, everything becomes pink to signify the love Squirrelflight feels for him, and she is won over again after he raises her head up and comforts her. For a moment she feels a shy joy, but flashes show her fears of him snapping at her again. But she still agrees to be his mate again.
8. Another flashback shows Squirrelflight curled around Hollykit, Jaykit, and Lionkit, with Brambleclaw looking at them proudly. This then flashes to Squirrelflight nursing Sparkkit and Alderkit with Bramblestar nowhere to be seen. I'm not trying to paint him as a horrible father or anything, but I kinda think that just like when Squirrelflight wanted more kits in Squirrelflight's Hope, he caved and agreed to without really wanting any. But I haven't read the books in a minute so take that with a grain of salt.
9. So now we see Bramblestar on the highrock and Squirrelflight watching him from afar. Alderheart and Sparkpelt, now fully grown, are walking behind Squirrelflight and chatting. She looks back at them for a moment, sad again that they don't need her anymore. She looks back up again at Bramblestar, and is shocked.
10. She sees a vision of Bramblestar snapping her again. Something she genuinely fears but has been pushing down and ignoring. The vision changes to Jessy taking her place on the highrock, and Bramblestar laughing with her. Again this dosen't represent her actually being afraid of Jessy returning, but as an example of her more general fear of being replaced.
11. She takes a step forward, heartbroken and feels her paw touch something. She looks down to see her own skeleton lying in the dirt, a representation of her being left behind and forgotten by the clan. We also see Bramblestar laughing with Jessy about some unrelated topic, which is not only a representation of Bramblestar outliving her and replacing her, but of him not being phased by her death.
12. Starclan Squirrelflight sits back distraught. This part represents her fear of death and of these things actually happening one day.
Production Details: Because my main motivation with this project was to just get it compmete, some things changed from my original intention.
Originally my designs for the cats were much more complicated, Bramblestar and Sparkpelt had stripes, Squirrelflight had four lighter paws with only one being truly white, all the cats had some form of lighter stomach and neck fur, and Leafpool was going to be in the scene with Squirrelflight crying before Bramblestar "reconciles" with her.
But those designs were simplified jn the middle of the drswing process after I realized how much pain I was putting myself through drawing them over 50 times. During the start of this whole thing another one of my earlier ideas was to have this take place after Squirrelfight almost dies and instead of making up with Bramblestar again she fully calls him put on his abuse because her brief encounter with Starclan gave her time to reflect on her life. In some ways I wish I had gone more with that concept, but I was super excited and wanted to treat my first PMV like a grand event, so I wrote a whole script and everything, which made it harder to stick to that og idea. I now feel now that script might've overcomplicated things. I think if I had just started with storyboarding instead of forcing myself to write a whole short story first that og version of this PMV would've been the final one. But overall I learned alot about my editing software, how to make a PMV, ect. All I need to do now is to find the sweet spot for making simple designs, because I swear I thought my OG ones were simple enough. 🏃🏾♀️

It kinda chills me to the bone the way Bramble so casually talked about how he would outlive her and would have time to replace her and have kits then. I never really thought about leader-mate relationships that way before. Super dark for a kids book.

Squirrelflight has such an unfair life 😭 First her best friend dies(Shrewpaw), then Feathertail died( they were pretty close), then all that stuff with Ashfur, having startclan and Leafpool force her to take care of Leafpools kits, Bramblestar being an awful mate, losing Hollyleaf two times, her mom dying, Bramlestar being possessed. Can they give her a break 😭✋
Honestly! That's why I love Squirrelflight AU's so much. Some of my favorites are the ones where Shrewpaw lives and she doesn't get with Brambleclaw or Ashfur at all, or the ones where she ends up Squirrelstar, she honestly deserves it.
@Moon she just feeling less important to the family now because everyone of her family either they’re too busy or dead, I can relate of how she feeling (not the abuse love one, it most a making you feel like you are exist and not some unknown creature that living among of other shadow)

Finleap DEMANDED Twigbranch to have his kits. Squirrelflight only mentioned having kits TWICE to Bramblestar. She saw how he didn’t want them and never spoke to him about it again.
She did constantly think about kits but like I said, she only mentioned them twice. Leave my girl be💀

She was his only true friend. That’s all I can think of for why he chose to be with her. I think he felt like he was going to lose it all if they didn’t become mates. They should’ve never been together romantically. The New Prophecy shows that. I’m hoping things change after the new arc.
It NEEDS to change. Her relationship is simple; A cycle of violence and pain and suffering. They fight because of something BrambleButt misinterprets, he gives her the cold shoulder and mentally tortures her, then conflict happens, they make up, there is peace for a while, then it all repeats, over and over again. And I love SquirrelFlight, I will rage if this continues, god damn Erins. (Sorry to go on a rant here.)
@@SproutiusShrubiusthe16th it’s incredibly annoying to just watch the repetitive back and forth emotions he goes through and how he takes them out on her. Other than the fact that it’s clearly abusive, it’s overused and boring. I don’t want to see a character go through never ending abusive stupidity when things can change. It ruins the story and it ruins the characters.

This gave me a whole new perspective of the song that I had never really gotten while listening before! Your imagery with the lyrics really told the story flawlessly.
And I LOVE the shots where Squirrelflight notices her own aging and mortality (white muzzle) in comparison to Bramblestar’s god-given longevity.

I just finished Squirrelflights Hope (god was that book hard to read) and this really helps me to piece all the crappy drama the Erins threw in the book and make me understand how abusive and fake Bramblestar is. The concepts in this are super, super amazing and I love all the drawings!

Their relationship is really messed up, and you know what? The Erins didn't even intend on Bramblestar becoming an asshole. They were such a great couple in the beginning, I just don't understand WHY did they have to ruin it so badly.
And for real, even if Ashfur was abusive, and even if he was related to Squirrelflight which obviously doesn't matter in the warrior cats, he would have treated Squirrelflight better. Like for real.

(Before reading, please know I’m not intending to offend anyone 🙏)
Okay, starting with Arc Two. Squirrelpaw is already annoying and irritating, but you could see her as a funny cat in a way. Right off the bat, we get Squirrelpaw blackmailing Brambleclaw into taking her on the journey. (which is pretty messed up bc it was his mission. StarClan sent him, not her) Throughout the journey, Squirrelpaw continues just being the same bratty apprentice the whole time, trying to push her way to being in charge and stuff. Her and Leafpaw have their weird little physic connection thing and they treat Tawnypelt’s rat bite. After the journey, though, is where things take a turn. Here we have Hawkfrost, and now it gets interesting. Immediately, Squilf is like “Hawkfrost is your brother and you want to be friends with him? Too bad, because *I* don’t like him, and *I* control your life choices, so you can’t talk to him!” Absolutely what the heck Squilf? And yes, I know that Hawk *was* a bad cat, but no one knew that. Squilf proceeds to tell Bramble that if he doesn’t stop trying to have a social life then that means he doesn’t love her anymore.
Alright. Leafpool’s Wish and Power of Three. Things get even worse. In LW, Leaf realizes she is pregnant with Crowfeather’s kits, and she seeks out Squilf for advice. At some point, they decide to break the code and take freaking Squirrelfight (who is a *warrior*) to the Moonpool. There they speak to Yellowfang and she suggests that perhaps Squilf looks after the kits as her own. Squilf says she could never do that, and they leave the Moonpool shortly afterwards. Although, after a while, as Leafpool’s kitting grows nearer, Squilf decides that her sister’s job as a doctor is more important then keeping the trust of her own husband. She and Leaf hide away and Leaf has her kits. They return to ThunderClan and Squilf raises the kittens as her own. Now here’s where things get spicy. Jay Holly and Lion get trapped in a fire, and Ashfur threatens to kill them so Squilf will know the pain she’s caused him. Squilf snarls at him and basically says “Kill them then, they’re not my children so I don’t care” Jay Lion n Holly are heartbroken and shocked at this statement. Later, after finding out that Leafpool is their mother, Jay proceeds to get a vision of a crow’s feather drifting beside his nest. Immediately he can tell that it is telling him who his father is. Near the upcoming Gathering, Hollyleaf has a feeling that Ashfur is planning on spilling Squilf’s secret. Shortly before the Gatheirng takes place, Holly sneaks up on him and kills him next to a small stream, which washes away any blood or evidence of her being there. Then the Gathering happens. This whole scene makes no sense. After killing a dude so the secret wouldn’t be told, she leaps onto the leaders’ tree and yowls it out to everyone. Really, what was the point? Bramble at this point is feeling shocked, betrayed, and heartbroken. Leafpool steps down from her position as medicine cat and Bramble breaks up with Squilf. He proceeds to stop speaking to her, which is completely understandable, considering what she’s done.
Okaaaay, moving on to Squirrelfight’s Hope. I found the experience of reading this very infuriating. (By now, Squilf has become deputy and is mates with Bramble again) Alright, as the book opens, Squilf admits to Bramble that she feels she is growing old, and wishes to have another litter of kits before she dies. Bramble gets awkward and tells her that he doesn’t really want to have any. Squilf feels sad about this and thinks about how she wishes Sparkpelt and Alderheart still needed her. Later at camp, Sparkpelt brings the joyous news that she is pregnant with kits. Squirreflight is very jealous. Bramble purrs his congratulations to his daughter, and looks back at Squilf. He feels guilty about this, as he knows she wants more kits. He says to her “I’m sorry. I know how much you want kits..” Squilf explodes at him and yells “And I know how much you *don’t* !” (What the heck was that for, Squilf?) Soon, Bramble n Squilf are called to and emergency Gathering with the other leads n deputies. Harestar complains that the new territory arrangement for SkyClan isn’t working out for him and his warriors, and he accuses the other Clans of not using their new land, just as his warriors aren’t. Squilf suggests SkyClan moves in to the territory just beyond ThunderClan n ShadowClan’s borders. Leafstar is suspicious, and says that she doesn’t want her Clan to be cut off from the others. There are other objections, and Squilf continues to try and back up her plan. After the Gathering is called to and end, Bramblestar tells Squilf that she should have talked the plan over with him before randomly announcing it. Squilf gets very angry with him. Later, Squilf decides she is going to disobey her leader’s orders. She takes Leafstar with her to scout out SkyClan’s potential new territory. There they discover the Sisters. They are very aggressive, and end up freaking kidnapping Squilf n Leafstar. Leaf tries to escape, and her leg is badly injured by Snow. She is later nursed back to health, and a while after, Bramble and his patrol, along with some of SkyClan, discover the Sisters’ camp and fight for Squilf n Leaf to be given back to them. Squilf n Leaf return to their own Clans and Squilf is rightfully scolded for being so reckless. Even so, Squilf defends the Sisters and claims that they’re innocent cats. “They treated Leafstar’s injury.” Is her reasoning. *they freaking caused Leafstar’s injury* A while after this, one of the Sisters’ patrols maims a ShadowClan warrior after trespassing on their land. Again, Squilf protests that they are innocent, and are just trying to protect their pregnant leader. Soon Leafstar decides that she does want the land for SkyClan, and the Sisters tell her that she must wait a few moons so Moonlight can kit safely. Although she’s annoyed, Leafstar agrees with this and waits. After a while, though, Moonlight’s kits still are yet to come. Tigerstar becomes inpatient and convinces the other Clans to help him launch an attack on the Sisters. Unable to object to all four other leaders, Bramble finally quits following everything Squilf wants him to do. Squilf is very angry about this and proceeds to scream at him about it. Later, Squilf and Leaf get visions of cats fighting kits, and they feel that Moonlight’s kits are in danger. They rush to the Sisters’ camp and find that Moonlight is kitting. She is having trouble, so Leafpool helps her get though it, and the kittens are born. Soon, though, Dawn arrives and Squirrelfight n Leaf have no more time to return to ThunderClan before the attack is launched. Bramble n the others get to the camp and see Squilf. Bramble is shocked and Tigerstar accuses her of being a traitor. The Clans fan out around the Sisters and Moonlight holds her ground. The Clans attack and Leafpool runs with Moonlight and her kits. Squilf just stands while everyone fights, clearly not wanting to hurt the stupid Sisters. When one of the Sisters, Furze, jumps on Bramblestar and begins to tear viciously at his throat, Squilf stands by and watches. She was going to let him die, and people still say she’s the innocent one in the relationship? I just don’t get it.

I feel like I am the only one who thinks Bramble was always a mentally strong, cool-headed, mature, reasonable, noble cat who actually carried for Squilf and showed a lot of support when she needed it (eg when Leafpool left and Squilf was in pieces) while was always ignorant of his feelings (eg Hawk story, how she lied to him about their fucking kids - like dude never got a proper family and his wife behaves as if she doesn't care, and her being jealous of her own daughter also while giving priority her messy personal life and wishes while having o lot of responsibilities as a deputy is just unprofessional). And I don't dislike her at all. I think she's an amazing character but seeing how so many ppl xan't figure out their personal opinions and just copying after a blogger freaks me out.
@@nerdcomplete7004 exACTLY! It’s so stupid that people don’t put any thought or time into *actually* looking at the truth of squilf n brambs’ relationship. Instead, they assume that squirreflight is perfect and can do no wrong just because some popular creator made a video on it.
yes, I agree. I also think it has to do with the fact that everyone puts Bramble and Squilf's romantic relationship (especially her feelings, which were hurt by something perfectly reasonable and natural) above their responsibilities. + considering the silly drama in SH, I'm just sad that the adult version of her can't find peace with herself and seeks self-affirmation in the fact that someone depends on her (she was so lively and self-sufficient, it's a pity that her actions in life didn't provide her with satisfaction like it was with Sandstorm). It's selfish to me and it's a very bad reason to have kids. Just like her love for Bramble - it is deep and sincere (and I think that she loves him more than he does in return), but this is all exclusively for herself - she does not try to understand him and help him (but he, I I guess quite - since he forgave her after the battle, understood her feelings about her sister and her desire to have children). Also, I don't remember her ever caring about his feelings, opinions, and issues (mostly caused by his troubled childhood). (sorry, I recently re-read everything and was surprised how non-childish these books are :)
and of course he is not a saint either, although I see him as a more complete person. He shows resentment by ignoring Squilf, which is painful and toxic to her, but I see it as a coping mechanism that he learned as a child.
Heck, even Sparkpelt recognized the bad relationship Squirrelflight and Bramblestar have in Squirrelflight's Hope (for context, she questions Squirrelflight for why she keeps on defending Bramblestar even though he treats her like an apprentice). These two need a cat divorce so bad fr

Lots of cats in the WC series are somehow related. It’s not that bad. It’s not that weird, either. Squirrel and Bramble are half cousins, I believe, so technically they aren’t too related. I kind of disagree though. if Squirrelflight got with Ashfur instead of Bramble she would've ended up in a relationship just as bad. Anybody with the capacity to do what Ashfur did over a rejection isn't a good person to be around. There was already something wrong there with Ashfur and no amount of doing whatever he wanted would stop that.
I also disagree. If Ashfur would be with Squirrelflight it would not be a healthy relationship. Hes too obsessed with her, aNd thats Bad. He was also extremely pushy into their relationship and as he was rejected, he reacted really bad. Hes a bad choice too
Ashfur tried to burn her children and her when she rejected him. If he gets that far because of rejection then he isn’t a good mate.

erm... sorry to burst your bubble but this entire PMV is a criticism on BrambleSquirrel-
The way that this victimized squirrelflight to the point of infantilization is disgusting. Stop acting like she's the victim when she isn't. She has abused Bramblestar since the beginning, and all his "abusive actions" are literally a negative response to how she has treated him. Right off the bat, from TNP, she blackmails him into letting her go on the journey when she had zero business going in the first place.
She knew fully well that she and Brambleclaw didn't get along and that it would cause unnecessary stress, but she did it anyway. When Brambleclaw wanted to meet his brother, she showed disgusting prejudice toward Hawkfrost, all because of who his father was, and this was before Hawkfrost even ended up becoming evil, and this was purely because of Tigerstar's influence. Hawkfrost was clearly sinister to the READERS but not to the characters.
And she made it very clear that she was jealous of Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw's potential relationship because she knew if they bonded, she would come second to Brambleclaw, and mind you, that was before they got into a relationship, and the irony of it all is that squirrelflight has an incredibly strong bond with Leafpool. Leafpool is her first, and it's very obvious as she always puts Leafpool on a pedestal.
Squirrelelflight constantly acted judgmental and hypocritical and blatantly harassed him over this, and even after the hawkfrost situation was dealt with, she still harassed him over the smallest things. During the breakup, she uses wording like "I can see where I stand in your life. I'm not as important to you as some cats-as Hawkfrost is". This has manipulative undertones, making it seem like Squirrellight has jealousy mixed into her motive. Making a lover choose between them or their family is never a good sign of a healthy relationship. This is quite literally guilt-tripping at its finest.
She constantly manipulated him, ignored his feelings, and tried to force him to do things he didn’t want to. She used him to cover up the fact that Leafpool broke the code; she didn’t care about his feelings and got all surprised when he was upset that she didn’t trust him enough to tell him. And wow, the irony of some of you saying “he yelled at squirrelflight for trying to help the weak” when that situation was a matter of life and death for the clan. Sunset was a member of the sisters. The sisters had attacked Shadowclan and lived on their territory. If Tigerstar were to find out, Shadowclan would attack them and possibly cause unneeded bloodshed and deaths for something that was easily preventable. And funny because earlier in the books, when Bramblestar saved kittypets and brought them into the clan for shelter, squirrelflight berated him and yelled at him for wanting to help them just because their kittypets (the irony considering her father is an ex-kittyoet and she has kittypet blood) were in different situations. The kittypets did nothing to her, while at sunset, the sisters attacked Shadowclan and then kidnapped Leafstar. Squirrellight is the abusive one. And squirrelflight literally tried to guilt-trip Bramblestar into having kits by saying she wouldn't have much longer, when there was clearly a pressure point with Brambleclaw due to the Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf situations. While Brambleclaw could have handled the situation better by pointing out they've had two litters already and that his duties as leader are greater than his duties as a father, this still doesn't excuse the manipulative behavior from Squirrel.
Her wreckless decisions of only thinking about kits are what started the whole drama in SQH to begin with. She went behind his back, made political decisions without his consent, and tried to move Skyclan off their own territory when Bramblestar didn’t want to move them.
Squirrelflight is shown to still distrust Bramblestar, having paranoid thoughts that he doesn't love her due to not wanting more kits and that he'll have a second family after she's gone. Which she all fails to communicate. The funny thing is that emotionally, squirrelflight has a lot of power over Bramblestar, and she knows this. You people act like Brambleclaw/Star was always hostile when that is not the case. For the most part, Brambleclaw played passive-aggressive and, in general, was calm. He was rightfully angry when it was revealed that Jay, Lion, and Holly weren't his kits, but he continued to be a father figure to them. When Jessy came, of course, he caught feelings for her because she actually listened to him and wasn't at all like squirrelflight. And no, he did not cheat on squirrelflight. Catching feelings does not = cheating.
When it comes to the situation of Bramblestar getting upset with her about only thinking about kits, Bramblestar wasn't wrong. He points out the obvious: all Squirrelflight had on the brain was kits, even if it wasn't just herself wanting them.
The whole reason Squirrelflight was so obsessed with the Sisters, putting her clan in danger and the Sister's wellbeing over their own clan, was because of kits. Her "mid-life crisis" was being kit obsessed because she felt that kits would make her loved again and feel wanted. Not because she wanted to have children for the sake of loving children; she just wanted to have more for her own sake, and at a horrible time. And at that point, I don't even blame Bramblestar for being frustrated with her foolery.
Keep in mind that she's gone behind his back, lied to him, and even involved their daughter while embarrassing them in front of their own clan by acting like a wayward, naïve apprentice. All the while taking advantage of her position as deputy and because they were mates. He treated her like an apprentice becasue she acts like one. Her bad decisions caused the worst outcomes for everyone in SQH.
Bramblestar getting annoyed with her because she only has kits on the brain wasn't even the wrong statement. It was him pointing out just how foolish she was behaving for someone of her caliber, so I fail to see it as nearly as emotionally manipulative as Squirrelflights. When her behavior was borderline similar to Finleap's.

Squirrelflight never received any abuse from Bramblestar. When Bramblestar figured out the Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Lionblaze weren't his sons, he didn't abuse Squirrelflight. He fell in love with a she-cat but that made him realize his love for Squirrelflight.. Not until he became possessed by Ashfur who seeked revenge on Squirrelflight.

This whole video is based on Moonkitti's video and my own feelings on it, I'm really not trying to pass it off as fact because I get that the character's weren't written like this intentionally. People think Bramble is abusive because he treated Squilf with a lot of cruelty after the secret came out, it's not just that he broke up with her/that he was upset, but the way he was constantly taking it out on her. And his goes beyond the PO3 stuff. From the very beginning of their relationship whenever Squirrelflight did something Bramble didn't like he would put her through hell emotionally and guilt trip her, making her feel like she was the one who did something wrong. All of these things combined are very similar to emotional abuse and that's why so many people come to that conclusion. Again I'm just trying to explain my own perspective, and you don't have to agree, but that was basically what was on my mind while making this.
Hey, it kind of worries me you don't see the abuse so I'm going to help a bit seeing as the author also explained a few things. Bramblestar gave silent treatment for a year, ignore squirrelflights opinions, got mad at her for stating her own opinions and punished her for being an independent women and not being obedient to him. That's mental abuse, there's a difference between psychical and mental, of course he had every right to break up with her but punishing her for having opinions isn't really something anyone should do.
I'm not saying you can't love bramblestar or anything I just don't want people to get into a mentally abusive relationship and not see it because the books deemed it as 'normal'
