Good night, I have a question, the Coolant Expansion Tank cap must be tightened completely or it should turn a little back and be a little loose. Thank you for your videos.

Hi, i have been considering buying a P38 myself, and i’m trying to retrieve the necessary knowledge for evaluating my buy...however, if i navigate forums i only see threads where buying a P38 is strongly discouraged. Given i am not a mechanic, but with a manual i am able to do a lot by myself as i did with other cars/motorbikes...i used to split the possible problems into two cathegories: the ones that leave you on the side of the road, and the ones that make you curse, but you'll see better once at home. What cathegory does the P38 Diesel belong to? Is it worth buying?

Do you plan installing additional gauges as well? For example to see oil temp on gearbox and engine.
I´ll also give you some future project ideas:
    1) one great idea is to install coolant level indicator. Currently diesel P38´s don´t have any and if some hose were to break then we will not know about it sooner than engine overheating which on this car destroys the engine.
    2) Another idea for future project is to move the auto gearbox cooler to another place. The current location is very unsafe if you drive off road.
    3) DIY Snorkel
    4) Winter preheating system
That´s all what i plan to do on my car :)

Hi Madis. Very good tips. I've thought about some gauges for what you mention, but not had time to look further into it. A coolant sensor would be nice too. I've thought about using the manual transmission cooler portion of the lower radiator as an extra transmission cooler, but not considered moving it since I don't do any serious off-roading. Same with a snorkel. I don't plan on wading. There might be some nice aftermarket solutions out there. One of my P38's have an electrical block heater, but I don't use it since the cars are parked in garages. But it'd be nice to have a Webasto diesel heater to get to a pre heated warm cars during winter. So that's something I'm still looking into and will do if I come across something that could work. Thanks for watching and I hope you get your modifications done. That'll be great!

I have a friend that has a gearbox oil temp gauge fitted but he tows a caravan and he burned out one gearbox towing in a hit country in the mountains. He changed the diesel gearbox for one off a v8 and then fitted the temp gauge as well.
I tow a trailer long distances and I've had the 2.5 autobox start giving error codes once I got to big hills in France. So I now have a v8 autobox ready to change over :-)

@@mrsmith6316 I have had the warning message when driving offroad.. For some reason mine does not have fan for gearbox oil radiator and that bloody thing starts overheating..

Mine doesn't have a fan either. Some do some don't. I'm sure Land Rover had a reason for only fitting some!
