- I have both the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and Anbernic RG556 in my hands and in this video, I take a look at each to give you some of my initial impressions and thoughts.
I plan to do a bunch of gameplay testing videos for the Anbernic RG556 in the coming days so keep an eye out for those as well.

I've never had my hands on a Retroid so cant compare. But after unboxing the 556 (present for my son) I was amazed at how heavy & premium it felt, the screen is amazing, like $1000+ flagship samsung phone good. I have big hands, but it just sits perfect and feels great to hold. Its the see-through blue one and I'll admit Id have picked the black for me but after seeing it in person, its darker than the pics online show & way cooler, also doesn't seem to get as dirty. I have older devices as-well but comparing it to my two newest the rg355xx plus & H, they literally feel like cheap toys compared. I will note the sticks have very little travel which i'm not a fan of though. If this is your first device, or you're upgrading from a more basic one one I cant see anyone not loving this thing, especially for the price.
As a former owner of the RP3+ and current Rg556 owner its tough. The RP4pro is undoubtedly more powerful but actually playing PS2 and GC games that require both stick is a hand-numbing affair. RP556 screen in person is miles ahead and the ergonomics are great, but its barely more powerful than a RP3+. Sad that neither are quite "there"
Yeah it's a shame. The power of the rp4p with the screen and ergonomics of the rg556 at the $200 mark would be amazing

GeForce now doesn't work on the rg556. The app doesn't recognize the anbernic controller. Not sure about gamepass but it should work if the controller is mapped like the rg405m was.
I love the 750p resolution paired with 4.7 display. Less resolution = more gaming power than 1080p. That's why I chose the RP4Pro, it can play games from 3ds,gamecube,ps2, some 2d switch and more.
Yeah, but the screen max is 720, so it can't display 1080 🤔

Nice, I'm leaning 556. I'm not sure why the RP4 needs so much power for a 720 screen 🤔
Mostly heavier games like ps2 and Switch.
Screen resolution doesn't matter as much as rendered resolution (Your game will still look better upscaled to 1080p despite your screen been 720p, the bigger the screen the more you will see the difference tho).
RP4 Pro can do higher resolution, UA-camrs shows 556 has to go down to x.5 for Mario games on Switch emulator for 60fps while RP4 Pro can do x.75 (Might not sound like a lot but its 50% more!!)
I would say 556 has everything better like 1080p OLED but RP4 pro has the performance for better switch emulation etc...
Do the rp4 pro grips make a difference?
Yes they definitely make a difference when using the joysticks
I have both and my rp4pro is collecting dust. Any ps2 game ive wanted to play on my 556 has run perfect and the screen on the 556 makes psp and 3ds so good.
I've been testing a lot more PS2 and while the 556 can't play everything, it can play quite a lot and the screen and grips make it a really great experience for sure
@RetroHandheldGuides agreed. Just feel the power on the rp4pro is nice for ps2 and gcube but so wasted on the screen.
The rp4 pro with grip plays everything bar nothing also runs ps vita, only thing you have is a screen and RG,s build quality 🤦♂️ also rp4 is much more pocketable. Also WiFi 6 is much better for streaming steam and gamepass, rg 556 is close but not close enough.
Also the vita runs better than the 556 so 🤷♂️
@robras2850 wifi 5 works fine. Happy you like your rp4pro though. I just don't trust retroid after all they have done to their customers and bad quality overall. Anbernic has yet to disappoint me. I'm ok paying for quality over a performance bump. All that said. The rp4pro is a fine product and I would never tell anyone to not buy something they would enjoy. Everyone has their favorite companies and all are welcome....well except gkd. The way they do things is terrible. That company is ran by a group of 5 year Olds playing business man in their basement.
I just want something to take to the firehouse with me to play on my down time. I have the Rog Ally Z1 extreme and that stays at home.
Both are good options. Rp4p is more powerful but rg556 is more comfortable and has a bigger screen

Voice audio way too low, as when you introduced the music after your initial comment, it BLASTED MY EARS! Please learn sound leveling of the sound in your videos! Other than that minor complaint, I love your videos!

Can both play vita?
Yes but the games that will play are mostly dependant on the vita3k emulator which doesn't have a ton of compatibility right now
if only rg556 did not change the analog stick layout... i will definitely buy it...
I decided to go with the RG556. While RP4 never goes on sale, you can already find the RG556 for $160 shipped right now. Which ends up being a big difference in price compared to $220+ RP4pro. 60 less and you have better screen plus it’s OLED, ergonomics,speaker, can display to your tv at 1080 compared to RP4 at only 720. Sacrificing around 10% power and getting a lot more at around 60 cheaper Is a big difference to me.
$160 shipped definitely changes the value proposition. I think a $15 difference isn't enough to push me to the 556 but when it's more like $60 difference then the savings could make it worth it if money is a factor.

RG566 = GOAT Display
RP4p = everything except the display is better! ok the rg566 is more comfortable overall...but the RP4P including a grip works just as well
Many people still preffer rg566 handling even though they have the grip for RP4P, as you can see on this video as well that he has to still stretch.
The quality of the buttons and joystick is what kept him on RP4P.
Thanks lad. I totally agree. The RG556 is not the upgrade that Anbernic should have released. It's just not enough to compete competently with the Retroid 4 Pro.
The comfort element is huge, tho.

Isn't that 500usd 😂 you could buy both and have 100usd leftover.
@@X862go First of all, buying both devices wouldn't get near the performance of the Odin 2 pro. Second of all, its $369, and if you wish you could go to the base model for just 299, it's a no brainer. You would have a device that is future proven for the next 5 years.
I would rather buy another Steam Deck at that price
All reviews for RG556 mention it attracts fingerprints. I don’t have this issue. Maybe people have oily greasy hands? 😂
Some youtubers say its the black one that attracts finger, not the blue one.

It is possible on both devices though mostly just for the easy pixel art type games or side scrollers. There are a few premium games that can run ok-ish as well though not many
