      Hoarding is usually connected to a traumatic event or mental health issues. Until they heal it is very hard to let go of their things. Even rubbish can become important. I applaud you tremendously for helping your dad. On his more difficult days, try to be patient. You're taking away his safety barrier and that can be scary. There may be some high emotions. It must also be emotional for you too. No one wants their parents to be living like that.

      @@TheLauraVEffectit's important to remember that hoarding is almost always due to a traumatic event or mental health issues. Taking away their things, even trash, can feel like you're taking away their safety. Sadly unless they're willing to admit there is a problem, there isn't really anything you can do. It must be both upsetting and frustrating for you but they're not doing it to hurt you. They need help, the kind of help you can't give them. I hope one day they will be able to get better and clear the hoard.

    • @TheLauraVEffect
      @TheLauraVEffect 2 дні тому +6

      @sallywaites8517 Thank you. I've dealt with it since I was little. I'm very familiar with it. My oldest child's father came from a family of hoarders and was also one. Sometimes our daughter shows signs of hoarding, and she has been that way since forever, so I think it can sometimes be genetic. It's like they just refuse to throw things away.
      I have severe PTSD and OCD, but mine is opposite. I'm constantly replacing things and getting rid of things - constantly, which sometimes drives other people crazy.

      Me encantan las limpiezas en los modernos apartamentos de Finlandia y ver la nieve afuera..pero las de EEUU son increíbles jaja, aquí en las islas Baleares también hace mucho calor y sufrimos mucho las plagas de insectos, como dejes una ventana abierta de noche es más que probable que entre una cucaracha y menos de lo que te das cuenta ya haya criado. Son horribles. También supongo que has de notar mucha diferencia con el olor. Aquí también con el calor todo huele mal enseguida, hay que tener cuidado de no tener nada en mal estado y sacar la basura a diario. La verdad es que tienes una actitud y aguante increíbles, yo en la mayoría de esas casas tendría que salir cada 10 minutos y el tema de las cucarachas sería una pesadilla, yo encuentro una y se me pone el corazón a mil, no imagino ver cientos 🤢

    These homes are so disturbing... more so because people are living this way - mostly the elderly... we need to take care of our neighbours who are not able to do for themselves! You know, in Miami it is extremely common to splice up homes and rent out parts of it (efficiency)... this is actually a good option for older people because they would lessen their living space to a more manageable size, bring in some extra income (possibly affording them the ability to pay for a cleaning service) and also have a person nearby who would check in on them if they aren't behaving normally.

There is help for the elderly, but many people don't know what services are available or how to apply for them. At least he has Alicia to help look after him. She deserves a lot of praise as most people would just look the other way. Her kids are learning a valuable lesson in humanity.

    This poor old man's story should be heard. As a housing case manager, this situation breaks my heart. Is this truly how we're allowing people to live in America? Are we really letting our elderly live without running water for YEARS?! No one deserves this. Auri, thank you for doing this noble thing for him. I live in Michigan and knowing how much a lot of my clients struggle, your work gives me hope that there are so many more people like you--and hopefully some in my area. I have clients who could benefit greatly from learning to clean for themselves, and you have inspired me to move toward starting a program opportunity for my clients! Just like you, people here have skills they can use to benefit others, and I want to help them do it. You've blessed someone with a much better environment to come home and heal to, and I hope the neighbors will step up to help him get the assistance he needs. It need not be them doing it for him, but finding independent living aids to help him be a healthier person at his home, where he belongs. I hope you understand the difference you make for people, and may you always have the blessing of community support. Stay safe!

      Many times, elderly men (sometimes women too) have dirty homes not because they are dirty people but because they can’t see well or they cannot move with ease anymore so if you go to an organization which deals with the elderly, you will have a lot of opportunities to do free cleanings.

      Or they did report it but there was no follow up. OR Ronnie refused help. Sometimes there is only so much you can do for a full grown adult. Adult protective services are not the same in every state.
      Most APS can do is to recommend services to people if that’s re of sound body and mind. Maybe the at home nurse WAS the result of an APS agent inspection. I know it might sound bad, but choosing to live in biohazard is totally legal as long as you are not endangering children or other dependents like pets.

    The biggest enemy of any cleaner/ housekeeper/ maid is TIME. Auri cleans for free, but, still, her valuable work is timed. And it's IMPOSSIBLE to clean everything, perfectly in a rush. When you are cleaning, time flies, specially in houses like these. That's why I don't like to clean houses, even if the pay is good. Nope!
    In hotels is the same, 30 minutes or less for each room, doesn't matter if there is a kitchen in the guestroom.😡.
    It's easy to critize, when you never clean for a living and you just sit there watching the video.

      There isn’t much APS can do if the ADULT living there is of sound body and mind. Most they can do is refer to other programs. But people will frequently turn them down or refuse. A person has to be deemed incapable of making decisions on their own before any government service steps in. That nurse might have been there as a result of APS stepping in. Basically, as long as they are alert and oriented to self, place, time and situation and aren’t an immediate danger to themselves then they can choose to live that way, or they can choose to not accept help.
