- Wow! The South Bronx in New York City is ROUGH!
For this episode of dashboard tours, I took New York Route 9A from Connecticut into downtown New York City. The plan was to find the worst neighborhood in New York City. If you’d ask any New Yorker, they would tell you if you want to see the bad side of the Big Apple you have to go to the South Bronx. So that’s what I did. It was a Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at about 10 am.
Now the South Bronx USED to be a terrible place for crime, drugs and poverty. It still IS that, but it’s nothing like it was in the 70s and 80s. Gentrification has moved in, and this place isn’t the same as it once was. This part of town - places like Mott Haven and Hunts Point were once written off by renters and developers, but this part of New York City is the new focus for modernization.
I found it to the overwhelmingly full of life and there are still signs of a time when this part of town was the poster child for urban blight. It’s an interesting mix of old inner city urban hardscrabble life and modernization. The route we’ll take will wind through the main streets of this part of the South Bronx and take us through some surrounding neighborhoods as well. Here’s the exact route we’ll take.

This just shows how much better off NYC is than most American cities. This is practically quaint compared to what you see in the worst parts of SF, Philly, chicago, Baltimore etc

Did you speak to the people who live there? I saw graffiti and people going on about their daily lives. I found the title offensive. I was raised there, obtained bachelor's and master's degree! Raised a child in 70's & 80's who was exposed to the "hood", culture and solid education. graduated from Cornell and makes a six figure salary. I'm comfortably retired. So who did you talk to?

That first area he started in is a major hub for drug dealers and addicts by 12 In the afternoon there's so much street traffic you have to shoulder block your way up the street

I'm from the Bronx, born and raised. I thank God the Bronx isn't how it used to be, but it is still can be rough. I hope it continues to go in the right direction because it is actually is a beautiful borough with a lot of history.

I worked in the south Bronx for many years as a public health nurse and I can honestly say I never I countered any problems . The people always friendly and helpful . Loved it

Like most neighborhoods the Bronx has always been 99% hard working people trying to make a life for themselves and 1% a-holes making it harder for everyone else by causing trouble,

I grew up in Queens Village and was born in Jamaica both in Queens County. I have seen pictures of Jamaica recently and it looked alot worse than the South Bronx you are showing. I live in San Diego, Ca and could never live back there again but I do go back for a visit once every 10 years. I am 66 now and most of family and friends have moved away or have died. New York City has the best Pizza, Chinese Food and Bagels in the world!
I grew up in the Morrisania area of the South Bronx in the projects, born and raised in that one apartment from the age of eleven months to 20 years old. I remember some fun times there from the 70's, but I also remember the burned-out buildings and the fear from seeing almost everything burning around me. I thought a few times about visiting just to see for myself how different it looks, but everyone I was friends with have moved on, one way or another. I watch the news and I know there is no way in hell I would ever go back, not even to visit, so much crime. I seems like someone is always being attacked in the most horrible, weird way. I too have moved to San Diego, CA and I'm going to be honest, I never liked it here, too hot in the summer and too expensive.
You live in San Diego? Try the Chinese food from Mexicali Mexico. It’s only an hour and a half and they have the best Chinese Food in the world.
I heard that the Bagels and pizza is from the water that NYC gets. It gives dough a unique flavor.
Montreal has better bagels, China has better chinese and Italy has better pizza

What a difference from 1988. Drove through part of the Bronx back then, on our way to Fla, and the place looked like a war zone. Skeletons of burnt cars littered the roads, piles of trash everywhere, and burned /vacant apartment buildings several rows deep,. A totally scary place! Took a drive through there again in 2010 and hardly recognized the area, in a good way. Looks pretty good these days. Nothing like the hell it once was.
Not as bad as it once was. But you do not want to be there. It is horrible.
But still no place to park.
I’m a proud Bronx girl, and it’s definitely not the worst part of New York City. It’s the working class part of New York City, there’s a difference!
Bronx was a scary place back in the 80's son but people was different it was still respect for life in those days.

Born and raised in the Bronx. I went to elementary and junior high school in that area. It's not the Worst part of NYC.
I see he avoided panning to the right of 138th St because he didn’t want to show the new condos. He also could have went 1 block south to show off the new market rate towers The Arches. Driving along Bruckner Blvd would have shown off the new apartment towers, lofts, cafes, and bars that are along the strip.
I believe his agenda is to continue the negative view of the Bronx. There are many beautiful communities in the Bronx.

Born, raised and still here. Third ave is so populated with awesome people shopping and workers banks those closed stores u see he probably was their before 9 place is so lively. We have great schools parks even new condos. I actually find it alittle upsetting for someone to come in my community and label us the worst. I believe theirs much worst. Every place has crimes.
This looks like Beverly Hills compared to what I saw driving through Baltimore & St Louis.
Two s***holes cities
Coming from Harlem and my family driving to DC in the 1980s told me that my hometown wasn't the worse. The sheer number of abandon property in bmore compare to the occasional abandoned property with lots in Harlem was an eye opener. It remind me of many sections of the Bronx. But bmore was on steroids. It had lots of abandoned properties with very little street life. While the Bronx had a lot of LOTS and many abandoned buildings. However, it did have noticable street life even though for nyc standards, it was faint.
Compared to Detroit, Chicago and Rochester, South Bronx is like you're living in Beverly Hills
@@davidgibson7615 I wouldn't go that far. Besides, you are comparing one smaller section of NYC with the entire city Chicago and Detroit. Also, have you read the statistics concerning poverty in the Bronx? It is abysmal. So even though crime rates are significantly lower, poverty rates in Chicago and Detroit are not much worse. In New York more than 50 percent of a person's income is spent on rent. NY is a very high tax state as is Chicago. But New York penalizes it's poor more than Chicago. Detroit poor is about the lack of employment, not high rent. And that's why crime.would be worse. But although crime is the worse thing that a person can experience, so is a person's health. If they can't afford quality foods, they will have a higher mentality rate. So nothing here is about Beverly Hills.
Baltimore is a strange city- in some areas you can go directly from blight to prosperity & there are extreme amounts of both examples!!

Actually it doesn't look that bad to me, Nick. The building are kind of ugly; not beautiful, but not like horrible slums, either. Not as bad as some of the places you've traveled to in the South and elsewhere. I do appreciate these drive-through vids; thanks for your efforts.

Been there too, and I dont really see whats so bad. Graffiti? Big deal. Its a big city suburb, you can imagine places in Queens and Brooklyn look similar. The real test is to run that same route at night on a big holiday weekend. And try not to leave the "city streets soundtrack" on repeat.

The South Bronx is NOT a city suburb. A Bronx suburb would be Morris Park or Throgs Neck.
My Grandmother lived there back in the 1920s before she got married and moved to Hollywood in the early 30’s. We visited there in the late 60s when I was a kid. I had an aunt and uncle still living there until they passed on in the early 70s. I visited again there in the mid 1980s when I was in college. It was crazy. Abandoned stripped cars, boarded up businesses, burned out buildings, trash and rubble everywhere. Then again most of New York City was a shell of what it once was. The hotel my grandmother worked ‘The Regency’ over looking a park had turned into a flop house, and her apartment building she and her sisters lived at was an empty lot. I have to say from watching your tour. It looks much better than I remember. Despite never liking NYC.

Dude NYC has a Heroin and drug problem in general. This city party’s hard. I’ve lived in Brooklyn for 20 years. Watching this reminds me of what BK looked like 20 years ago. It’s crazy how much this city has changed in such a short time. The Manhattan skyline, the price of course and all the empty businesses down the avenues in the city. Last time I was in the BX I noticed now you guys are getting a bunch of condos. That sucks man. Look out. I watched it happen in Williamsburg, Bushwick, and it’s starting now in Bedstuy. I live in Green Point now it’s like the last place without a bunch of condos. Those Polish people won’t sell I’m glad I love my landlord.
Pretty sure white ppl in downtown Manhattan do heroin more than the latinas and blacks in the Bronx.
@@bongwelll I grew up in Williamsburg during the 80's and 90's, I seen the changes. Now I'm in the south Bronx 3 times a week and it sucks. I moved out of NY and I hate having to commute to the city. I used to work at the Petland part time during my teens on Manhattan Ave. Man I miss Peter pan doughnuts and Russ Pizza.
@@slaybaenay absolutely false. I been to parks in the Bronx that have hundreds of used needles, watched them get cleaned up and the next day there's like 15 or so used needles. I worked on Manhattan for many years and never experienced the drug use like on the Bronx

I found it safer to live in big cities than places like Fayetteville NC. My kids and I rented an apartment from a church on church grounds here in Fayetteville and were robbed during church services on Sunday night. Never had that problem in NYC. Called the cops and they wouldn't even come out to investigate.

What I did see: about 100% business occupancy with over 90% independent types, later model cars, people walking around on a typical day. What I didn't see: burned out buildings, garbage piles, large groups of thugs on corners, large groups of baby mommas towing around kids, hoopty cars with 40" rims, burned out cars, homeless tent cities, crackheads and police cars on call.
Don't see the beat up cars around like you used to back in the old days.
In the 80’s there were many abandoned apartment buildings with boarded up windows the boards had curtains and flowers painted on them, I drove by them for months before I realized they were boards and then only due to traffic coming to a stop.
I saw cars on fire in the old days.
Go to la you’ll see that now

Compared to many of the other "bad" you've been to South Bronx looks pretty nice. I mean they have plenty of shops and services, eyes on the street and plenty of public transport options.

I've been a NYer all my life. East New York in Brooklyn is worse. At least South Bronx is close to Manhattan.
Yeah I went to middle school in Bronx back in the late 90s and Brooklyn was the worse, we heard a lot about shootings and gang related came from Brooklyn, also central park area.. people are surprisingly nice in the Bronx ..

You realize that none of “The Warriors” was actually filmed in the Bronx, but mainly Manhattan and Brooklyn.
I spent some time working in that area. You drove down streets that I’m very familiar with. There are a lot of good hardworking people in Mott haven. And yes, I’ve experienced a lot scarier in the Midwest.
Mott Haven doesn’t even look the same with all these High Risers going up and every week!

I'm born and raised NYC, lived in the Manhattan from the 60's through the 90's. Even the worst areas of the city have that cool New York vibe, and the people, no matter how humble their financial situations, display that New York cool attitude. I enjoyed this tour- especially viewing the vintage brownstones, many of them that appear well-maintained! It's definitely much nicer than so many of the other areas that have been covered, such as Camden.
I am a native of the South Bronx! My childhood was awesome, and my family and I have and have had many wonderful memories here... this is most definitely an outsider's perspective...

The SB is not that dangerous. The exception would be to be in certain places at 3 am because there would only be one reason for one to be in those places at that time of night.

When I was in my early twenties, that definitely was the worst part of NYC. There were abandoned or burned out buildings everywhere. The crime was awe inspiring it was so bad. I had an aunt that lived in the projects on Alexander Ave near the Willis Ave bridge. My mother would drive to visit her and I would go with her as well. I can’t believe how much better the area is compared to the late seventies/ early eighties.

As someone who grew up in North Bronx and went to S. Bronx often, I feel way less safe in a ghetto in Kansas City (or any Midwest ghettos) than back anywhere in NYC.

For me (a german) the South Bronx of the 70s and 80s are an extremely fascinating place and it still looks like a fascinating place today. I really ❤ NYC.
I would love another tour during the summer. Seeing any part of N.Y. during what looks like a cold November winter day, everything looks drab and absolutely depressing.
Wow, fantastic video. The mix of old vs new architecture is outstanding. If I were to move to NYC I believe that I would spend day after day exploring the streets, a seemingly endless proposition. Whenever I believed I had come to the end I would just start over again..

I was a firefighter paramedic in south Bronx NY. I live south Bronx for 1989-2001. I wouldn't let my kids outside to play. I had two good watch dogs. My two dogs will not let the kids walk outside to get on the bus without them beside of my kids and my two dogs will walk back with them after they get off the bus.
Tbh this is my entire neighborhood and it can get really bad, especially over the summer. Things are actually way worst within the buildings honestly, the living conditions are horrible to this day. I can’t complain too much because there’s people around the world who live in completely worst situations 💯💯💯
My granmother moved out of Patterson projects in The south Bronx in 1987 dead in the middle of the crack Era when it was really rough in the BX ,imagine what your tour would've been like then lol

Nick welcome to my old hood. Born and raised. 1972'. My dad came from the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 in the late '60s legally and my brothers all came as legal immigrats. We been since moved to greener pastures. Making it out alive was a blessing.. All 10 of us.. you can tell we had good catholic parents. But them days were tougher than leather.

Good video Nick! I was born and lived in the NE Bronx for 32 years. Taking the 6 train was okay. It got you to Manhattan to work in a short time. Your video has sparrows chirping. That’s positive. It looks vibrant. Just like you said. There’s mostly working people that can commute to work which really helps Yeah. The ‘70’s. Driving on the Cross Bronx Expwy showed Such deplorable conditions. It isn’t That bad compared to other cities you’ve videoed.
I'm sure the area has a different vibe during the summer. The public high rise apartments are most likely not a pleasant place to live, but overall it's not bad. Businesses are open for the most part. There were no bombed out or vacant buildings and the streets were clean. There seemed to be new construction around every corner. Hope you got to see Yankee Stadium.

@@ChrisPuckett - I'm glad to see that you're an expert on living in public housing high rise buildings. I lived in Baltimore for 25 years and worked for City government so I do have an idea as to how it's like to live in public housing. Yes most of the people are good people. Their complaints though are that there are drugs being sold in the buildings and stairwells. People pee in the stairwells and the elevators are frequently broken. In the summer many of the residents are up all night because of the noise and heat so there is a different vibe during warmer weather. My comment was that the community overall looked good. Stores were open and businesses looked fairly successful. Yes I now live in a suburban neighborhood in Florida. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. I'm not a big fan of Nick's quick city drive throughs. He needs to do a bit more research on places other than statistical rankings of places.

I own a big store business right there and this neighborhood is now very different than 80s. There are BMW, Mercedes and Audi cars once in a while in my parking lot. 138th street and out skirts start to have luxury apartments being built or in development, some fancy restaurants there also. I believe there are very early signs of gentrifying.

Born and Raised in Mott haven. This Neighborhood has changed a lot. A lot more safer than it used to be yet many parts are still dangerous specially during the summer and at night.
South Bronx is hardly the roughest part of NYC, not like the “Fort Apache” days forty years ago. Unlike your videos of cities in the Midwest and South, there’s people out and about, there’s life, vitality and functioning businesses here unlike so many other American cities which are deader than a door nail.
The Bronx and Brooklyn have the highest crime rates in the city.
Grow up in Queens....first time I went to the Bronx was 78'. This is called "urban renewal"....the money for this Ronald Reagen promised/allocated in 1980 and never did.... Bill Clinton in 1992 released those dollars for most of this to start and throughout the city

I was a kid in the South Bronx before the PJ's. It was a great place to live! We lived in tenements and what were called "railroad flat" apartments. I go back there every once in a while and reminisce about what the South Bronx used to be!

Hi ! Longtime Parisian, here. Don't be fooled : the french capital is another stinky, polluted, filthy, noisy, batshit crazy expensive city. Parts of it are slums and no go zones, there's homelessness, poverty, criminality, violence, fucked-up immigration and so on and so on. Of course, you'll find plenty of breathtaking monuments, museums, places to enjoy but it's not what you see in movies and commercials - and surely not what it was 20 years ago.
Plus, there massive protests pretty much everyday...

I was born and raised in the boogie down. In the seventies, I went to elementary, junior high and high school in The Bronx. I went to college in Manhattan. I was raised well and I turned out fabulous. It is way crazier now than it was back then.
There's definitely a lot of life there compared to places like East Cleveland where it's full of blight. I would feel ok walking around here during the day time; just a bit more investment needed and more diversity and high income housing to make it safe all around
East Cleveland is a abandoned city. However, the Opportunity Corridor, University Circle, University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and C.W.R.U. will change all of that....Oh yeah, don't forget, eliminate domain and the land bank to.

From Illinois here. Visited Philadelphia in 2019 and had a great time. Rode the train above Kensington and also walked the streets under the tracks (Tioga, Allegheny stops, I think). Man, its something else!

I worked in the firehouse on east 138th st for 16 yrs the neighbor is and has moved in the right direction. It still has a way to go and the income for the area is still very low per household. But NY isn’t like it used to be….
"Worst" is relative. NYC overall is fairly safe. The neighborhoods have changed a lot, in a good way. It may not be super pretty but you can walk around in safety, more than I can say for many neighborhoods in other cities in the US.

ny has got to be one of the most dangerous. ive taken a few cross country trips and have yet to see something as scary as ny. not to say that the south bronx is scary, but as ive mentioned in another post, alot of crazy ghetto people actually go into manhatan, making that even more of a ces pool than the boros. ny also seems to have a lot of mentally ill people running around. i tried asking for directions in ny a few times, and people didnt even stop. i reckon the fear has alot to do with real things that are hapening. if it was fairly safe, you simply wouldnt see the kind of fear that you do in nyers, especially with the white transplants in the city. but even dominicans from washington heights are scared with all the things that are happening.
