Czechs go crazy for Primark! New Primark opens in Prague to much fanfare. Craziness? Yay or nay.

  • Hi Everyone! In my first edition of The American Perspective, I'm discussing why Czechs go crazy for Primark! The first Primark store was officially opened in June in Prague on Wenceslas Square and many Czechs lined up for hours to shop the fast fashion retailer. As a foreigner, this reminded me of Americans lining up for deep Black Friday discounts. Are the Czechs embracing western culture a little too much, or is this a great new development in the Westernization of Czechia? Let me know in the comments!

Ahoj! I'm Jen, native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Every day we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Inside every Czech person, there are two wolves: One wolf wants to buy quality products. The other wolf wants to save money. Trying to appease both wolves in the most Czech way possible results in buying cheap products and then complaining about the quality :D

Nice video. However, I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Primark is from the west, I think the reason for the horrible queues is dirty cheap prices, other fast fashion stores don't offer prices this low. I'll probably check out Primark too to see if they have anything worth buying, maybe in a month or two when the queues die down.

Interesting video. However, my family is partly Czech and I have many Czech friends living in Prague and nobody is talking about Primark. This kind of thing must be appealing rather to a specific social group than Czechs as a whole. Also, I don't think that Czechs "idolize" anything from the "West" as they might be doing 20 or 30 years ago. On contrary, from what I see they're rather embracing their own Central European identity, because like I've heard: "Nothing good is coming from the East apparently and nothing great is coming from the West lately either" :)

It is also quite possible that PRIMARK paid a large number of people to stand in that queue, then others joined spontaneously. Not likely, but a possibility. In any case, sheeple are very dangerous, they enable tyrants to perpetuate suffering. For example in communist Poland 30k communists oppressed 30 million Poles - 1:1000. It is the millions of sheeple who enable it. Selective breeding of intelligent people seems the only way forward.

I think Czechs just expected very different sortiment of products, when you enter typical european store (I mean shops which are common here) like HM, CA or something like that, there are completely same things, everything looks same, when you are small, you can't even find your size because everything is designed only for big or fat people, people just probably expected Primark is so alien for us that it must be completely different and they can buy something totaly unique or in some not so common size or something, but I don't really believe to that, it's not about what shop is that, it's about what market is it, this is Czech market....Primark, HM, CA and others...they all will have same shit here always.
BTW I am not so rich to buying super cheap things, I did this mistake many times. When you have original Levis jeans for 100 eur and some jeans from vietnamese mall for 10 eur, it can be actually cheaper buy original because those are jeans for 10+ years.

Hey, I'm living in London for 8years and I can say it's not just in Czech... Here we had masive queues for Primark after every lockdown, it's just really cheap shop everyone goes to because they need the little bit of shopping therapy. And honestly the quality is not that bad too, had a shirt from there for 8 years... or the other example, bought my self Lewis jeans for £89 (2670CZK) and they lasted same time like those from Primark for £12 (360CZK). Not saying Primark is good, but for daily use, it just makes sense especially for example for work in hospitality...

Is Primark fast fashion? Yes, Does it exploit its employees in Asia? Most likely yes. But it's definitely not worse in quality that H&M or Zara and the difference in prices is immense.
I think it's unfair than Primark gets all this backlash while other shops that have been around 'forever' are seen as.. well, very few people will post on social media about the environmental impact of Bershka clothes. 😅

    • @rinu1
      @rinu1 3 роки тому +1

Exactly. Show me a store that doesn't have Made in PRC/China or Made in Bangladesh on their label. Even Czech store Bushman has it on its sleeve, except it costs 10x more and lasts about a similar amount of time. Or C&A's "organic" line - if you check the certificate, it says that it gets the label if there is at least 5% of organic cotton.
Let's not prevent that there is a solution to dress yourself fully just with local clothes made in pristine conditions. Even second-hand stores rely on fast-fashion stores to produce.
For example, I occasionally buy shorts from Jitex directly which says it creates everything in the Czech Republic, however, it is a fashion for leisure time, and it's not like I would go in these clothes to an interview. Plus, they last as long as your average shorts from a Vietnamese seller or C&A (quite long).
It's like with laptops. There was an outcry about Apple how they made their components in sweatshops. It was very fashionable to point the fingers. What happened? Apple claimed it made some changes, yet nothing really happens and more importantly - all laptop brands have their manufactures in these locations in very same conditions and nobody cares anymore.
Or Nutella. Remember the outcry about it containing palm oil? Have you checked what contains palm oil? All "traditional Czech" cookies and snacks, all shampoos from the supermarket. Who complained about that? Me and like 2 other persons seem to care about it to the point we have bought palm oil-free shampoos for years.
These 2 incidents were also worldwide.
Anyway, I think the reasons for waiting lines were:
1/ COVID lockdowns and the lack of events to attend - some people were starved for something, and it is more exciting to browse through a new store with a different catalogue than these being here for a decade.
2/ 10% of Czechs balance on the poverty line. 10% of Czechs has one or more warrant of execution over their head. Many single mothers struggle a lot, especially after COVID which affected their jobs - often contract not full-time. In these cases, any crown counts.
3/ Some people are just addicted to the word DISCOUNT / SALE / LIMITED OFFER.

These "cheap" brands are setting much higher prices in ČR than in West. It used to be cheaper to go to Germany and buy sports brands there than go to Prague. And Czhech know thaht in primark they get solid goods for reasonable price. Considering environmentall and labour aspects, the lis would shrink. Because all "brand" stuff goes at least once arround the globe.

In a way, it reminded me of a Canadian's remark on a facebook that he regretted that he could no longer experience "authentic Prague" because now the girls were running Starbucks coffee and eating sushi on the bench. When told him that it was a bit of a disrespectful remark, because the authentic Prague was held here by, among other things, a foreign army and he would enjoy it and then disappear into the world where he drinks Starbucks and eats sushi, so he took offense. The only thing I need to throw out are jeans since I get holes in the crotch area and they can't be used as rags. But that's about it.

When it comes to Primark, I think what entices Czechs the most are the super low prices (Czechs are known to prefer buying more cheap lower quality products over saving up for something pricier) and the fact it's a brand that used to be available only abroad until now. Most of the stores on Wenceslas square that you mentioned are in fact fast fashion, but for an average Czech it's sadly not even that cheap... That's why most Czechs buy it - high quality eco-friendly fashion is expensive and still not easily accessible. But not all Czechs are the same, a lot of young people shop in thrift stores and second hand clothes selling apps.

I would never queue for fast fashion store opening, I have nostalgic memories of Primark back when I lived in the UK, they had surprisingly high quality goods for ridiculous prices. When we talk about sustainability we should also mention size inclusion. I wonder how long it would take to find one wearable plus size outfit in all second hand stores in Prague. Several fast fashion brands have discovered this huge gap on the market and started producing interesting clothing from xs to 5xl. I never shop for fast fashion when Im in the USA, because I can find high quality clothes there, but in Czech - sometimes even when you support a decent brand the quality is on the fast fashion level.

Interestingly, there were MANY foreigners, even those who I know for sure have their own Primarks, like Spanish or German. Why would you wait in a queue for a shop you can visit in your country instead of visiting some place local? This was even more mysterius for me than people from small Czech towns wanting to check out a new shop brand.

However, those flip-flops were for the novelty, something to wear in the glorious Scottish summer, and the shirt...well, that was in a time I didn't have many shirts and I was a poor student. And I still do wear it (if it's not too hot) and it still does hold up.

I think that quite a lot of Czechs still feel like they've missed out on capitalism and consumerism. In many ways, the idea of catching up with the West - or more exactly, the idea of West how it was forty, fifty years ago - is still very much alive, and many people still dream of Western consumer abundance that was promised to us: lost of food, big houses and fast cars. A lot of people fail to notice, however, that West has moved on and it's in many ways not the West we used to admire during the communist era anymore.

I don't think Primark's success has much to do with the fascination with the West. It just sets the bar of CHEAP fashion a bit higher with a huge selection of goods (I've only seen a video from the store, never been inside). A lot of people consider H&M, Mango or Zara expensive and rather go to Kik, Pepco or Lidl to shop for clothing. It makes me rather sad and frustrated that a building had been demolished so this glass building could be built and very likely with the original intention to bring Primark to Prague. Because quite frankly, you don't get a better location than this downtown Prague.

On everything else it's getting more and more expensive though - to the point that it starts leveling with other, formerly more expensive high street brands like H&M or New Look. Although New look doesn't exist anymore, I think. Perhaps that's why Primark is getting pricier - because the competition is dropping like flies...

I don't feel like the quality of Primark products is any less than the quality of products from stores like New Yorker, H&M, Bershka, Gate etc... It is definitely cheaper though and as for fast fashion, I don't think you can get clothes here that aren't fast fashion. And when you make 100 czk an hour, you're not really looking for this type of store. You just buy a shirt that doesn't cost more than 3 hrs of work and eventually with time put it on the "wear only at home" pile.
While I'm interested to see what the Prague's Primark offers, I'll wait until the crowds die out. I'm mostly excited for the Friends, Harry Potter and other fandom's merch. We don't have a lot of that in here

    Hi, Jennifer,
    Sir_Mac here, as always!
This brand new series is great! Great opportunity to listen to properly spoken / pronounced american english, informative content and covering very interesting general topic, demonstrated on one particular example.
I love your "versatility". You can do serious thing, you can do history, you can speak czech, you can make jokes about Americans and Czechs in the same video, you can do serious stuff ... Multitalented... "Všestrannost".
I think, this Primark is destined to be unsuccessful. The huge queue was some sort of "new toy" paradox. Few weeks and nobody will care, nobody will recall it.
There are a lot of Vietnamese shops and markets, if we want something cheap with unknown quality. I think that McDonald's, Starbucks and other companies are snob thing. We Czechs know how to make a perfect hamburger or coffee, we don't need any international brand to show us :-)
On the other hand, the cheap clothes with unknown quality have their place "under the sun", for example now at jižní Morava (Hodonín and other places), where the EF4 tornado struck. Not only the clothes will become damaged, dirty and unrepairable, and you don't care, if the T-shirt cost 50 Kč, but you do care, if it cost 500 Kč, and there is also symbolic level - when the repairs are done, you can get rid of those cheap things, because they helped you to cope with the disaster and when everything is fine again, you don't want to have anything to remind you, what you have been through.
I don't know, if your plan is to make only one episode per "phenomenon", but political correctness, racism, BLM, MeToo ... they need, in my opinion, some prequel episodes, which should dig deep into American history, because many of those things, mentioned above, seem crazy to the Czechs.
We love justice and common sense, and to us, it seems that many times the american approach is lacking those. On the other hand, if you are familiar enough with the Czechs' perspective on those topics (BLM, MeToo, racism, political correctness), you could create an extraordinary videos, covering the topics with the ambiguity and yet very informative!

I don’t understand the queues but I understand that people want to try fast fashion bacause they only knew the slowest fashion in the world.

Hi Jen. Nice as always. But you are missing one big point: the quality of all big brands selling their goods in Czechia is as low as "fast fashion".
Example1: When i bought original Levis jeans, after two years i can only wear them to walk my dog. Then i bought jeans in Primark in Dresden and after 4 years they are stil quite ok.
Example2: When i bought Martens boots, few years ago, after on year i had to throw them away cause there were holes in leather and sole. Friend who baught Martens 20 years ago, still have them and in quite good condition.
Example3: My mother bought jeans in 70s. Then my older sister was wearing them. And on high school i was wearing them, ofcourse not the same condition as new, but the fabric was still holding together afer 30 years.
Qaulity of fashion in Czechia is mostly sh..ty, so why pay 3 times the price.

very interesting video, jen. i agree that czechs should be more conscious while buying clothes. i think young people like me are trying to shop more sustainably, though. and all movements come here quite a lot later than the US. additionally, imo the situation here is different from the west. in the us, there are huge thrift stores where you can find anything really cheap. as far as i know, we don't really have that here. if a secondhand store is cheap, it also has only really ugly clothes. if it has better clothes, it tends to be expensive. there are some second hand stores (i think some of them are owned by foreigners) that sell clothes for more than at like, zara, which is one of the more pricy fast fashion stores. and as you said, clothes are pretty expensive here!! personally, i'm just kinda tired to be getting the shorter end of the stick when it comes to consumer products - they're more expensive and lower quality here. and yes, i really don't want to add to the suffering of the ppl who make these clothes, but i understand that people would rather buy nice shorts in a fast fashion store for like 300 Kč than in a secondhand store for 900 Kč. It sounds ridiculous, but some of the stores really have these prices. Plus you have to search for hours to find something nice. I guess what I'm trying to say is: you are right, but shopping sustainably is more difficult here. But we still should try. I like the saying that it's better if a lot of people try and aren't perfect at shopping sustainably than it would be if just a small number of ppl were perfect at it. that's why i try to get my stuff secondhand on vinted, but i also sometimes shop at fast fashion stores. i try to buy clothes that i will really wear and love for a long time.
(Also many of us grew up only being able to afford secondhand clothes so I think ppl are compensating for that. But yeah, primark is reeaaally low quality, don't shop there.)

Here on the west of America we had to wait in line for everything! 45 minute line to get into the grocery store. No thank you. I have to agree with you on this one though. Support your local merchant. They will thank you later. Yes it may cost more, and yes it may not be "trendy", but I bet it will avoid the trash landfill much longer. Even though she has so many fans in our contry, the reporter asked if they liked them, and celebrities also said that he was a dozen and that it was according to taste. I wasn't standing there either.

Hi Jen, I'm Czech, I don't know Primark, I only know the name and I'm travelling. I have my own clothes, my own things that I prefer. Why do people stand outside the store? Because it's a certain group of people. You don't sleep in front of the store to get a new cellphone (apple) :) Mam hodne pratel a nikdo toto nedela. Neznam tyto lidi, kteri stoji pred obchodem.

I have few thoughts to say here. For introduction, I am one of the biggest idtols of "why fashion" - hardly ever I am concerned with anything else than the utility of the clothes.
I am not really sure what to call fast or slow fashion, how long should clothes last to get the label of being "slow". Most of my clothes origin in H&M, C&A, M&S and similar stores, combined with outdoorsy clothes from Intersport, Sportisimo, Decathlon. Most of these last for many years and currently I even can't think of anything I had to throw away. (Mabye some socks and boxers)
Therefore I have no complaints about the quality and I have no reason to buy any other, more expensive stuff that might be called "slow fashion" when these are already slow enough.

I think many people went there because they already heard from friends that Primark is "the best" and didn't have a chance to go abroad. Cheap stuff made from cheap materials (just a crap).

Hello Jenn, firs MCD was opened in Vodičkova street, not Lazarská. I was in the elementary school back then and we as a class won the prize in a contest which was a visit of that new MCD restaurant. The whole class was so excited but it was only a commented tour in the kitchen and facilities so then we were all so disappointed. But our teacher persuaded the manager to give us cheeseburgers at least so we were quite satisfied in the end.
