I was an MP in the Marines and it shocks me how policing in the civilian sector, is more militaristic than it was for me as an actual military policeman. We were taught that we were policing our brother and sister Marines and their families. We had a "police your neighbor" approach whereas Civilian police are trained with an "us against them" mentality and have been given ordinance and taught tactics used by actual occupying forces.
There is a laundry list of things we need to do as Americans that perhaps starts with a hard look at the hearts and integrity of all our elected officials rather than their political lean. Accompanied by immediate changes to policing through De-funding, restructuring, and reallocation of resources and responsibilities. In large part because our police are asked to do things, they are neither trained or equipped for but primarily so they can focus on changing the culture of there order and the removal of those who cannot adjust.

That sounds familiar. My sister in law was a career Army MP officer. Her last post was as Provost Marshall at Fort Myers in DC. She is disgusted for the same reasons you are, and is especially angry to think that men she trained and led may have been among those in the streets of Washington.

stealthballer : I think the average person just wasn't paying attention to politics, either because they didn't think it was really affecting them, or because things were fine for them and they trusted whoever was in power at the time. But you're right, this is all the direct result of patient Republicans working over decades to swing things in their favor. I remember when I was still a kid (I graduated high school in 2001, for reference) hearing Republicans urging their fellow conservatives to make sure that there was a Republican in EVERY race, on EVERY level of government, in EVERY state, down to the most minor elected position on the local level, with the goal of changing things to their favor from the bottom up if need be. And here we are.

Want an example of what it could be like with fewer police?
I had my home broken into once. Called the police, an officer came over, looked around and said there wasn’t much he could do beyond filing a report.
At the time I lived in a not so safe area full of people who kept to themselves. I didn’t know my neighbors at the time and didn’t have a clue on who would have broken into my home. Was it a neighbor? Someone from outside the neighborhood? Suddenly everyone looked suspicious to me and I felt terrible and very sad that the police didn’t care.
A few years later I moved into a “not so safe” apartment complex. It was primarily black and I learned very quickly that the police were not welcome. They came in and terrorized my neighbors, yes, but they were not welcome. At first, I was nervous about what I perceived as gangs walking around all the time, though they always seemed overly respectful to me. There were a few people who sat outside their doors to smoke or talk on their phones and I could count on them to kind of always be there.
My next door neighbor was one of the people who always sat outside. She explained to me how the neighborhood worked. The “gangs” I saw were often just friends who had some time and they used their hangout time to patrol the streets. Most of them were teenagers and when they went home, they would let their mama’s know about what they saw going on in the neighborhood. The mamas got together and also shared information about the goings on in the neighborhood. This would then spread to anybody else who wanted the news. Most of the people I saw sitting outside were people who liked gossiping with neighbors and were the best sources of information about the goings on.
I learned who was old and may be in need of help. Who needed a baby sitter and who was going to college next semester. Who had mental issues to look out for and what kids were actual trouble makers. Who had a gun. Who had been in prison.
She also told me that prevention was the best thing to stop violence and theft. Lock your door. Keep your blinds and curtains closed unless you’re actively using that window.
However, the biggest piece of advice she gave me, advice that has worked for this neighborhood, is to get to know your neighbors. It is so important to know the people you live around. Help them where you can and accept their help when they can offer it. Build a network of people to look out for each other and crime will reduce.
Is it a completely crimeless neighborhood? No. But we make do without police and let’s be real, the police don’t do much for poor people anyway.
All that money we put into policing should be reallocated into the community itself. Better public transportation so people can go to and from work without a car (freeing up the money that goes into a car into other things). More money into our public schools to promote actual learning rather than the school to prison pipeline we currently have. Public healthcare so people don’t fall into poverty because they get sick or injured. Public internet so more can have school and work from home.
Basically public infrastructure would help everyone have a better life. Private infrastructure only helps the rich.

One random thought that's really been bothering me over the past couple weeks. In a pandemic, it took months for our country to have the proper equipment to battle this illness. But of all the hundreds of videos we've seen over the past two weeks, it seems the police don't have that problem. Those dudes have ALL the goods. Just seems strange and horrible.

I said this on another video but it needs to said again here. Everyone in America remember: even if the polls say he’s losing, that’s no reason not to go out and vote to kick Trump out. On the contrary, it’s a sign that your vote can make a difference, but only if everyone works together to make that difference. So vote like your vote could be the tipping point, because it definitely was 4 years ago.
Remember all those people who decided not to vote or voted third party in protest? How about people who didn’t bother to vote because they were so sure Trump would lose? I beg of you, do not do that this year because all of that helps Trump.
If last election should teach you anything, it’s that your vote can and does matter, even and especially when you think it doesn’t.

His defeat needs to be heavy and a complete embarrassment to both the GOP and the Orangeone. If it is not there will be those left in positions of influence in the GOP who will see it as just a setback, ready to put forward a candidate with the same ideals but not so obviously a bloody lunatic. Go America, sort it.

6 years now my wife has been a paraprofessional, sometimes referred to as a teacher's aide or teacher's assistant. In those six years the two of us have had to work 6 jobs at the same time to afford our sub 1000 square foot home, our 2009 kia soul and all other regular cost-of-living bills. My wife works full time and two part-time jobs after school and on the weekends, I work two full-time jobs and a part-time job on the weekends. That's how poor we are.
My wife out of the goodness of her heart chooses to purchase school supplies for her 20+ EDBD (emotionally, developmentally, behaviorally, disabled) students instead of lettingthem fail. She regularly has to purchase dry erase markers, construction paper, notebooks, pencils... Etc.
And a few years ago, when it was a thing, the talk was my wife needed to go get firearm training and purchase a handgun to protect the school because cops weren't capable, again all of this was expected to come out of our pocket.
They've been defunding the schools, the healthcare, the firefighters, and social programs since before I was alive. Make the cops buy their own body armor, make them buy their own guns and ammo, make them pay for their own training. I had to pay for all of that a security guard.

It's cheaper to pay for public housing, drug rehab and education than for police, jails and emergency room services. That's just a fact. Some cities and states are already making a good faith effort to spend money helping people instead of locking them up, some are not.

    • @mediabiassucks1803

This is all very idealistic, but who's going to deal with the gangs the kids in that public housing will form? Who is going to arrest the junkies so that when they are given the choice of prison or rehab, they choose rehab? Some people are just kleptomaniacs and will steal even with a roof over their head and a fridge full of food. Then, you also have to consider sex offenders. They don't rape and molest because they are "economically disadvantaged" and you're not going to simply "educate" them that rape and molesting are not nice. Of course there's "therapy" which consists of the same behavior modification techniques that were used UNSUCCESSFULLY to cure homosexuals in the 50's.

But there are so many people jailed just for having and using a drug not just being on a drug while committing a crime. Also, gangs are usually formed for safety. If people actually begin trusting cops and having a better education system so people know that it actually is viable for them to go to college and/or learn a trade they won't need to sell drugs to make easy money. Also, a lot of it is also for a family. If we had therapy in disadvantaged communities we could stop generations of children using gangs and other substances to stave off negative thoughts. And therapy did not work on gay people because it is not a mental illness that can be cured. However, therapy has been proven to help people on ACTUAL mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, etc.

@DolphinsWIthIgloos That's because the government did a poor job of prevention programs and good public housing and employment. People lived in cockroach infested homes next to schools with students with so many behavioral problems that they could not teach. If schools were better and actually told kids of ALL backgrounds HOW they could be successful they would not think they needed easy drug money. Also most homeless people will not be employed simply because they do not have an address. So we do need public housing.

Media Bias Sucks! Imagining a world, in that you can save everyone and in which no one is ill and/or criminal - that is an idealistic idea of course... but referring to countries, who have less criminals than the USA is not idealistic... there are countries like Germany who invest more money into social things like welfare for people without job for their flat, food, electricity etc (Hartz 4 in germany), fee free university (just 230 Euro every 6 months and if you are poor, your food and flat will be paid by government while studying)... automatically medical healthcare for everyone etc... I know it is simplified , but a in a society, where people show automatically solidarity with you, if you are in trouble, you don‘t need to steal food and you don‘t need to steal pain killers or drugs... all statistics show that being poor rises the risk of being criminal... so if people are less poor and get solidarity of other humans, they are less criminal... and less criminals follows less money for police and prison 🤷‍♀️ that isn‘t idealistic... you can see that in countries like Germany...

These terms were created to not mean what they pronounce? The Cultural Revolution happened and there are lessons to be learned from it. The KGB and the FSB had and have decades long plans to break America from within. Institutions and politicians are being steered towards an endgame that benefits no one. Why as a leftest can I not openly say that there is police corruption and needs to be reformed, but police killing unarmed black people are not in the top 20 causes of death to black bodies? If BLM was focused on gun control and legalizing drugs, thousands of black lives every year and would give freedom and dignity to thousands more. What is the goal here? So I can confidently say "Defund the police" has a deceptively strong connotation. Far too many people on BOTH sides of the isle are hearing it and likely thinking "bankrupt" or "abolish," which would lead to total anarchy and then privatized security with no actual law being upheld.
To make the message clear we need to be united on what the message _is,_ and I think we should just stick with "Reform the police."
Like re-appropriating funds between different areas, increased employment for less stressed out cops (again, I've experienced this in my family), re-educating or simply booting out the hard-asses who won't accept reform, and making them all more accountable to the public.

I am looking forward to seeing the amazing things that may come of this if done right and if the system does not fight the change tooth and nail. In addition to police department overhaul, we *strongly* need to wrest control of our prisons, jails, and work houses back from the corporate interests that they have been divested to. I'm still ashamed to say that I've been incarcerated myself at one point, and it floored me to see how the work house that I was assigned to had to literally wait to induct me because it didn't have a "bed" available. That's right: they were booking people like it was a damn cruise ship! And all because this privately run "institution of correction" was run by a corporation that charged the government $80 per filled bed, charged for services like a library, and sold the produce that the convicts farmed in the greenhouse and hobby farm. Additionally, they overcharged the convicts for toiletries, charged for phone privileges, and the vending machines in each area marked up the items for sale to unbelievable prices! Would you pay $1.50 for a package of ramen??
Seth et al. are correct: the problem is systemic and won't be changed by altering a single facet of the problem. However, I am heartened to see a new breed of politician like AOC bringing back the old school political precedent that politicians should represent and act on the desires of the constituents that they represent. It has become too commonplace and casual for people to think that it is acceptable to become a corporate shill in government. It *should* be a law that representation of any interest not public be punishable by fine or imprisonment, or both. Hell, they *should* make it so that you cannot run for public office if you do not have a Political Science PhD!
Think about it: you don't let someone operate on you without a Doctorate and a license, do you? You wouldn't let someone represent you in a court of law just because they have an interest in courtrooms? There's a reason that we require licensing and qualification of doctors and lawyers: they have the ability to do great harm to people's health and livelihoods if they are not adequately trained. So how much more harm could someone do--to not just one, but many people--as a politician??
The election of people to our government requiring no qualification, only the largest sums of money, is the single greatest failing of Capitalism that there is. Period. I will never understand how it has lasted this long.
    Lastly: "were-badger" ROFL!!

It doesn’t matter how carefully you try to construct your sentence or even your platform. They will conveniently leave out that the high tax rate will only affect 30 people and only a portion of their income. They ignore the meaning, telling their base that defund the police means getting rid of the police and not reallocating funds to other services and taking things off the plate of the police so they can better do their jobs which means they won’t need as many resources anyways.
It isn’t the job of protesters in the street to chant, reallocate funding from the police force to other community services and roll back their duties to those community services so the department doesn’t need bad cops to keep up with all their jobs and they can keep the good cops who will then only have to deal with actual crimes creating a win win situation for everyone except corrupt police! I don't understand why people keep looking at *anyone* and thinking Trump is a better alternative.
The worst president in US history by any and every margin is a better alternative because Biden might do a couple of Progressive things to satiate his base? Really? "Biden might not be perfect, so let's vote for the guy who's a proven disaster again instead." Because... logic..?

Police have often been the go-to solution for local authorities for years now. Homelessness, drug use, mental health? Police will handle that. Dismantling city police and leaving policing to counties is not only cheaper for city budgets to pay but is also removes that as a go-to solution. They'd have to focus on solutions rather than just punishing the problems, and police could focus on actual emergencies instead of being burdened with all the problems cities don't want to fix.
