@@cjr4908 I thought Insurgence was incredibly cringe, but I actually found it really charming because of it. I got the opposite impression of the game taking itself overly seriously. I played through it thinking the writers were being really tongue-in-cheek and making fun of the game's comically edgy tone. It's like the idea of playing something up so heavily that there's NO WAY these guys can actually be serious here.
Insurgence infuriates me. It’s so goddamn close to being on the same tier as RenPlat, and Delta pokemon are an amazing concept that I wish were canonized, but The relative difficulty is borderline schizophrenic. You are either completely cheesing the gyms and important battles, Or they require a very strict, Singular solution. Orion, even post-nerf, Shines as a perfect example of how **not** to design a gym leader, worse-off a **First** Gym Leader.

This is so refreshing to watch, finally someone on UA-cam who ACTUALLY talks about each individual rom hacks. Usually its just videos with annoyingly loud EDM and 2 minutes of sped up gameplay.
Pokemon Fire Red Rocket Edition is such an underrated GEM. The story is amazing, the new mechanics are nice, the dialogue is well written and not typical ROM cringe, and the lore is vastly expanded upon. However i will say that its main feature is not the gameplay, its the story.
Probably my favourite Pokémon game period. It’s such an interesting perspective to explore Kanto from, and the story incorporates so many well known fan theories in a way that fits that I very nearly consider it canon to Kanto’s lore.
Literally COMPLETELY AGREE. Rocket Edition was SO FUN for me. The story was just amazing, like you said. Mechanics, lore, etc. also 10 stars out of 5. I'm actually going to replay it pretty soon I think, cause I finished it and apparently they're not going to make a sequel or anything.
I enjoyed radical red at first until I realized every team is just insanely hyper offensive so around the 5th badge I made a bulky offensive trick room team and beat every battle way too easily. It was like they didn’t know how to react to my mons being faster all of a sudden and they just didn’t stand a chance all the way up through the champion battle
To be fair, Koga's entire gimmick is that his team is literally just the fastest things in the game. Other than that, I thinks it's because HO teams are usually pretty hard to deal unless you build teams to specifically counter them.
To be fair, it's REALLY hard to make a challenging AI for other team styles. When you can prepare for the battle, status moves that are the core of stall teams are easily countered with a Lum berry, and defensive titans like Blissey are easily turned into setup fodder if controlled by AI. Personally my only issue with it isn't really the fault of the hack, it's the balance of the last few gens of Pokemon. A lot of the newer offensive threats like Tapu Koko, Ultrabeasts, Mega evos, Dragapult, etc all have insane speed tiers that powercreep the older gen pokemon so hard. It feels really bad to be running pokemon like Heliolisk, Gengar and Mienshao that in their respective gens were considered very fast, but which are regularly outsped by multiple opposing pokemon in each bossfight in RR. But it's not like the AI is cheating for the most part (outside of a few unobtainable Ubers in the last few sections of the game), they're just running normal current-gen threats because literally everything offensive is giga fast now.
dm99102 this is why I'll always prefer older gen hacks compared to this kitchen sink hacks, for lack of a better term. They spend too much time cobbling everything together and make no attempt to balance it, thus pushing you to use only the most powerful mon's instead of giving you more variety, which I assume is what including pokemon up to gen 8 was supposed to do.
Even if Insurgence is at a low tier, it is really decent compared to the other fan games. Respect to Jan for recommending it, since it is challenging. Story may be a bit cringe, but it’s a good fan game.
i would like radical red more if the game didnt force you to fucking EV train as well as regular grinding. i dont mind EV training for post game but when i have to EV train for the 5th rival fight? get out of here
Ev training is soo easy in radical red you can max out any ev in minutes with speed up, hating ev training is fine but the game sure made it easy for people who dislike it (macho brace is op in radical)
@@Meansoduck If you know where the ev training items and spots are (npcs will point them out), then EV training is absolutely trivial and takes no time at all. Alternatively, you could also just cheat in infinite money and buy vitamins, since they can boost your EVs up to the cap, unlike in base game.

it's surprising to hear he compliments people, As the "world's best' Nuzlocker he tends to sound conceited and sarcastic whenever he does his commentary for a pokemon nuzlocke challenge. Like I watched a little bit of his radical red playthrough and after the first couple of gyms he was just 'oh yeah this is soooo hard guys, I'm quivering" in a really sarcastic tone. Like of course you're gonna think it's easy with how "pro" you are at nuzlockes. All the people that recommended he play game, are obviously gonna think it's a difficult game cuz they don't play nuzlockes for a living. Honestly I don't mind that's he's great at doing a nuzlocke, my only problem is how he makes it sound like the rest of us should be able to easily beat the games too.

@@codyrex9265 yeah true that's a fair point, and I've seen his reactions to some of the other streamers. Like I watched him react to Mandjtv's pokemon platinum nuzlocke. He did have some cocky douche moments, but he also gave his advice on things that could've been done differently or the calculations about critical hits. Although in that same video I didn't like how unprofessional he thought Mikey leaving the room and not coming back during his 3rd gym challenge was. It was Michael's FIRST nuzlocke he was devastated that he didn't notice the special defense drop and the next shadow ball killed golbat, so it's only natural he'd lose the will to continue playing. And Michael's even later on in the next video he recorded of the playthrough apologized to his viewers for doing that because he lost a lot of subscribers for acting that way, a lot of viewers got pissed off that he had like 15 minutes of footage of nothing happening other than when Jubilee came into the room to say she didn't know where he went. But yeah I've seen his reactions to other streamers nuzlockes so I'm aware he's not 100% a douche.

Idk if it came from the creator or the people that recommended the game to him, but the standard theme was it wasn't possible. Oh god tbh I think the insurgence story was fine if Nora wasn't captured and is actually competent, there are less rival battles, damian doesn't exist and is replaced by a better rival or 2 tbh I would be fine if one of the rivals was a nerd collecting deltas and megas and would rotate his pokemon each time you fight so he could show off some of the new pokemon, like what taen is doing but more canonical and less hard as fuck
The only reason they even mention that is because his real mom is the leader of a cult. And no sooner do you learn this than when said character is gone for the rest of the story. The plot is so scatterbrained it's ridiculous.
Agree about sacred gold, storm silver. fantastic hack. The safari zone area was a little buggy for me though, crashed a few times for me but its been years since i've played it and hopefully they fixed it.

I feel like the game had a bit of trouble deciding weather it wanted to be serious or weather it wanted to be grand theft auto pokemon edition, which reduced how well both sides worked imo. It leaned much more into the serious side as it went on, which was a good choice, everything from cinnabar onwards was pretty great.
People need to understand he's ranking these based on his experience as nuzlockes, meaning playing them as normal games means different things for non-nuzlocke players.
An interesting romhack I've played that only has 1 major change is Double Emerald. It is just Emerald with a lot of standard QoL changes (and I think re-balanced trainers and levelling, although it does throw a lot of legendaries in as catchable pokemon at specific locations) but every trainer battle and a lot of wild battles are double battles. It allows you to easily use more synergy (like rain dance teams for example) than you normally have to in a pokemon game.
I would recommend Crystal Clear, it might be a little too easy, but it's a proper open world version of crystal, and it's really interesting. Certain battles especially in the early game can be brutal (from the experience of a scrub like me).
The easiest way of speedrunning crystal clear while also nuzlocking: Start at celadon city with your starter as a fire type, sweep the grass gym multiple times and maybe catch a pokemon or 2, if you picked something like vulpix you can instantly evolve it with a fire stone in the department store, you can go off from there
Gets a lot of points for the qol and casual nature of the game. Very nice to play an openworld Pokemon game. However, there is so much cringe from the self inserts to the ridiculously stupid AI nicknames.
Honestly the self-inserts and homages in CC are only an issue if you want to make them an issue. They never take themselves too seriously and there's absolutely nothing edgy about them, nothing trying to make the game for adults when the franchise should never be about it, like so many other fangames do. And when it comes to the actual story changes like the extended Eusine participation in the Suicune side quest, and the surprisingly well-written Mewtwo side quest, shows that ShockSlayer could make a straightfaced serious story without being edgy if he wanted, but CC isn't about that.
Renegade Platinum, for a casual run, was by far the best experience I've ever had with any Pokémon game. Not good enough to nuzlock this, yet. But it surely is on my bucket list.
Surprised to see Radical Red so low on here. I understand you're reviewing from a very particular viewpoint of Nuzlocking it which is fair enough, but still I feel the need to defend the hack's honour for the sake of people watching this video. If you're doing any non-permadeath playthrough it's stellar, up there with Volt White for me. It's such a well made hack, and the built in level caps are honestly the best. I hate having to self-enforce level caps because I have to constantly check the documentation to know what's coming up next, I prefer to go in blind and scout things out myself. Personally I'm playing with a sort of "softcore Nuzlocke" ruleset (I can only catch the first 'mon per route, only 1 gift mon per area, but no Permadeath and no reset on wipe). It keeps my favourite part of Nuzlockes (having to improvise a team out of Pokemon you might not normally use) and RR has enough difficulty for me without permadeath. There's so much shit in RR that will catch you off guard and kill you if you don't know the enemy movesets ahead of time (Explosion, choice scarf, unexpected coverage moves like Grass knot, Focus Sash, etc) - I want to spend my time actually playing the game and improvising strategies like I would in a competitive match, not reading documentation and planning an exact strategy for every turn of the battle before it even starts. I think my ruleset is a pretty good compromise for people who like Nuzlocking but aren't hardcore enough to do it in such a brutal romhack.
I love how many times “this is probably the best one” or “worst rom hack I’ve ever played” but he does it for every rom so besides the tier list you can’t tell😂
The most notable part of feature creep is that it ends up pushing the difficulty curve up higher than it really ought to be. I play Pokemon games to have fun; hacks being balanced around EV training and IV breeding turns into a time sink that punishes you for not optimising to the same degree that the game expects. All a hack really needs IMO is to give the enemy trainers bigger teams with decent strategies and trust the player to not trivialise them by overleveling them. (The difficult part of that is constructing the game's level curve so that you don't overlevel by default while not having to grind, because regular grinding is still a time sink even if it isn't as specific as EV training.)
From what I've seen, Renegade Platinum does a good job of being difficult without throwing absurd amounts of bullshit your way a la Emerald Kaizo/Radical Red
@@LordLucario12 yeah, so far playing that hack It's been decently challenging but I dont have to do anything I dont feel like or use specific teams for each specific battle or anything like that. Don't need to get a full team faster than I want, I'm allowed to use pokemon I think are cool even if I have better options, and while I can definitely see it being absurdly easy while playing optimally I feel like that's not what I want out of a pokemon game so it's not what I want out of a romhack either.
I know you mentioned you play more enhancement hacks and less so of the custom region games, but would you be open to trying out more of them? I didn't have too difficult of a time with nuzlocking them, but Gaia & Blazed Glazed were excellent gameplay experiences that I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys Pokemon
@@Latios93 8th gym is definitely nasty going in blind. My first blind attempt ended at the 1st admin fight. Second attempt ended with an unexpected rival battle while I was at low health. Third attempt ended with the 1st admin rematch. And the fourth finally beat the champion.
Since you mentioned you never played Rutile Ruby, I'd say you absolutely should. Dio Vento's hacks are just unbelievably good in their simplicity and the care that he puts into you. I strongly recommend all of them!
I just discovered you a month or so ago, and I can't believe it took me this long. Your content is great, it's crazy to watch someone who knows what they're doing run a nuzlocke, and you've got so many to watch. I don't know where to check if this has already been recommeneded or addressed, but I would love to see you play Pokemon Reborn. It's a great game, I've sunk hundreds of hours into it. The Pokemon distribution is so satisfying, with the slow build up of more powerful 'mons, TMs, and tools. And the difficulty is just *chefs kiss*.
Thought I'd give a little more info if anyone was interested: No fakemon (except unobtainable story encounters), 18 gym badges, full team of 6 in every gym, all non-legendary Pokemon gens 1-7 are in the game (I think the next update will finish including the rest of the legendaries into the post-game), gen 7 learnsets, z-moves and mega evolution in late-game, access to hidden abilities on all wild and trainer Pokemon, extensive use of terrains and weather in battles (+many new terrain types), and a level-down item akin to Rare Candies easily available throughout the game if you want to limit your leveling. The story can be a little edgy and cringy at times, but overall the game's a blast.
I never did a nuzlock, and I probably never will, but I will definetly use this list as a referene for games. I played Storm Silver (because I wanted to get pokemon who evolve by trade without having to actually trade)as if it was a regular Pokemon game and it really is incredibly fun. Probably will go for Renegade Platinum next. Thanks for the suggestions!
Ive never done a Nuzlocke or played Pokemon competitively, and this channel has become one of my favorites to just drop in and chill and or maybe use as background when im playing other games. I think its the lack of corny intros to the videos and just the honest pure content that the creator is actually passionate about. One of my favorite intro songs to a channel to. Im Subbed now
His assessment of Insurgence is definitely biased as a "professional nuzlocker". No disrespect, it's a valid position and he disclaims that when he starts talking about it. But from a casual player perspective, Insurgence is much higher than C imo. Also, the game does give an option to "un-edgy" the storymode. Not sure how well it works, i didn't play with that option.
This is a super nice video. Every UA-cam video about rom hacks is so insanely disingenuous, every rom hack is always the coolest thing ever even when there’s only like 2 hours of content. Nice to hear actual nuanced opinions.
A agree with you on feature creep, and would also add "Pokemon creep" to the mix, meaning that some of the newest games give you access to all 1000+ Pokemon. While the features are nice indeed, the games are also created in such a way that you basically have to use them to stand a chance against the bosses. I prefer hacks that are challenging, but still beatable with an imperfect team.
Unironically Insurgence is my favorite fan game. I love the gameplay of it and boss teams tbh. Also it has admittedly been a while but I recall the writing was a bit tongue and cheek? Like it seemed like there were a lot of lines that mocked the over-dramaticness of the plot.
@@thevioletbee5879 That's sort of a given requirement right? Contests are fantastic in the anime and in theory but the games never picked up even the heart behind them. They made it RNG-based and focused on screwing over your fellow competitors. Any game or romhack built around them has to rebuild the mechanic almost from the ground up.
I really enjoyed insurgence and thought it the story wasn't too cringe. I liked that it tried to make an actual story with real consequences and buildup in it and all the features are cool. I usually hate when rom hacks add fake mons to the games but the delta forms I actually really like. Maybe I'm just blind to the cringe after Dark Rising but eh I liked it
Two great hard fangames you should try are reborn and rejuvenation, these games both have 18gyms and have a new thing called field effects. Rejuvenation has difficulties and intense being the hardest. Reborn doesn't but it's already REALLY hard. Not sure if you'd want to but I'd love to see you Nuzlocke these games.
I never see these two games be discussed and it's such a shame, because I think, _strictly gameplay-wise_ , that both are brilliant. The fights are challenging, every gym leader has a full team, level cap, smart AI, fuckton of sidequests that are actually rewarding, so many static encounters that, I think, Jan considers that route/city's encounter so he can't use them all and should probably do some research before getting a regular encounter, but we can, and Rejuvenation has been balanced in v.13 (no more Kantonian Raichu after the first gym). Then there's the story. I personally like both. I know he won't like either.
Reborn e19 does have a good few options to customize difficulty without dumbing the ai down, so it is much more tailorable for personal skill level/time investment. Like you can give all your pokemon 31 ivs, remove enemy evs, or change up the level scaling of enemy pokemon. Also, there's a ton of quality of life improvements to practically remove grinding
As someone who got into developing fangames and joined a few teams recently it was very interesting to hear the nuzlocking perspective. For my personal projects I have to say they would absolutely not be something to be nuzlocked, as they are more story driven than "boss-rushes". In one project you can't even choose the starter as it is set for story purposes, in the other project you play as a Pokémon in kind of a reverse PMD game where you send teams out instead of going on missions yourself and go exploring yourself while waiting for the teams to return. And one project that is currently on ice would be probably ranked as "cringe" as well, as it will be a story of how the world is remade by Arceus because of cringe reasons, lol... Unbound is such an amazing game, perhaps the most polished and feature-packed romhack of them all. But I feel like it's terrible for a Nuzlocke. The arbitrary extra restrictions on all the gyms could easily lead to you getting fucked by bad encounters, and if you just accept the gift pokemon like the Ducklett before Gym 1 then it's totally monotonous. It's probably my one true complaint with the game, the gimmicky gyms are fun the first time but seriously hurt replayability. Because it's essentially made them like puzzles, and once you've solved a puzzle...thats it, you know the solution, and it'll never be as satisfying to solve it again.

A mechanic has been added into the game that allows you to steal pokemon from trainers after defeating them, but you don't have to. At first glance I thought that was the whole gimmick, just stealing pokemon. But the story and lore of pokemon rocket edition and the late game is insanity
@Barack Obama Haachama is a Vtuber from Hololive and in the past year or so has introduced her own storyline through videos and streams. Her original character is Akai Haato and after getting trapped in Australia because of the pandemic she started going a bit bonkers so she developed a kind of "split personality" in the form of Haachama to act out. The Vtuber community decided they were separate entities and she rolled with it developing an actually deep backstory on her own, even going so far as to cut off her own head and swaps between outfits to show which one is in charge for the stream. Until management was like "Woah. Hold up. This is getting to be alot. Probably don't." The rabbit hole is the name for getting sucked into vtubers so go down it at your own risk. XD
Dark rising was bad, Dark rising 2 was fine I guess, but Dark rising 3 looks fucking amazing. Probably because the dev is older and more mature, and knows how to do dialogue and stuff. It looks really promising

I love Volt White! The bosses are super hard! Clay made me restructure my entire team for one fight which I never do/have to do.He made me use Musharna. I've had more fun playing Volt White than I had playing Sword/Shield. I'm almost at Skyla and I already wanna play it again with a new team. My current team is: Infernape Feraligatr Starapter Ursaring Ampheros Haxorus Crystal Clear is also amazing and I wish there were more hacks like it. These hacks have made me want to make my own hack but everytime I try some issue comes up.
it's pretty different from the usual style of pokémon games, but you should try Rocket Red. you probably can Nuzlocke it, but due to the functional differences I think it's worth playing casually once, perhaps while fire truck
Maybe you might enjoy Crystal Clear however it is Gen 2 and has the same level curve. However it is open world for the most part and gives you so much freedom to mess around with. Everything besides wild encounters are based on how many badges you have. It has a better level curve from 8 to 16 badges. I don't know if you have heard of it but just thought I would give my own two cents.
Every drayano hack is pretty damn good! You have alot of options for your party even i had trouble who i should replace, removed.. Its sad that i need to reset renegade platinum since theres a bug i encountered in distortion world where i cant catch giratina nor i can find cyrus..
I am doing it is so difficult on 3rd attempt. It should be SS Teir it is so good. It is arguable the hardest. Now its hard but it doesn't feel like it cheats you which makes me like it way more.

He's well-written for the most part, but him acknowledging the player as a silent protagonist is just kinda dumb and makes him feel gimmicky. However, these are very nitpicky! I will say that, edgy as it is, a lot of care and consideration was put into it, so I'm not knocking it nearly as hard as my comment above made it sound!

I have beaten Dark Rising multiple times but would never even consider trying to nuzlocke it. That's stupid. No one should do that. For those who want to beat it in a casual normal playthrough, here is the strat: 1. Catch a Chlorophyll Bulbasaur and a Draught Vulpix. You can now outspeed those lvl70 Zekroms and whatnot that show up to murder your lvl40 team. 2. Abuse save states to not miss Sleep Powder / Leech Seed. Outlast the insanely overleveled boss-monsters until the trainers run out of Full Restores. 3. Get an Alakazam to abuse the 100% flinch chance bug on Zen Headbut. Use Save states to not miss. 4. Get a bulky Dark or Steel type (Ttar, Umbreon, Probopass, etc) before the elite4 to specifically tank the champion's Shadow Lugia's OP dark-type move. Typical team: Garchomp, Venusaur, Ninetales, Alakazam, Tyranitar, Drizzle Poliwrath (any other water would get crippled by being on the same team as ninetales)
I think the craziest Nuzlocke had to be NAPPY's cuz the mofo somehow AVOIDED wiping TWICE, beat the Nuzlocke with HIS STARTER, beat the sequel with his STARTER(Garchomp)
I was having so much fun with the deltas, gameplay, and music of Insurgence, but it's SO grimdark all the time. Like calm down, you're a pokemon game. Might revisit it someday though.
24:30 The hardest Pokémon game is actually Pokémon pit of 100 trials, but it's 100% not meant to be nuzlocked, as you can only use 6 Pokémon through the whole run, and your item usage is very limited. I don't think you can use Set mode in that hack.
Kinda tempted to Recommend pokémon infinite fusions, but that one is probably just a nightmare to nuzlocke due to the fusion mechanic needing two pokemon
Can confirmed. Nuzlocking it and fusing pokemon together feels so bad. Also the trainer variety kinda sucks, you end up fighting a lot of the same pokemon especially in gyms and vs rocket. Comparing it to Drayano hacks, the variety of opposing pokemon felt crap
I just finished Blue Kaizo and yeah, having watched you nuzlocking it before made it seem easy, but I was wrong! The early game seems doable, but when you get to the mid-late game you want to shoot your own balls. But I never surrendered and finished the game. I can say, unlike the original one, it makes you feel satisfied when you manage to beat the game, because Blue Kaizo gives real difficulty to the game and I had so much fun. :) PS: you're an absolute monster at nuzlockes, those overleveled Elite Four were really insane to me to deal with!
Radical Red 3.1 is amazing. It has a lot of entertainment value because of the randomiser. If you're playing any other nuzlocke you already know which encounters you need to get to beat the game. Where's the fun in that.

I played through it thinking the writers were being really tongue-in-cheek and making fun of the game's comically edgy tone. This is so refreshing to watch, finally someone on UA-cam who ACTUALLY talks about each individual rom hacks. Usually its just videos with annoyingly loud EDM and 2 minutes of sped up gameplay.
Pokemon Fire Red Rocket Edition is such an underrated GEM. The story is amazing, the new mechanics are nice, the dialogue is well written and not typical ROM cringe, and the lore is vastly expanded upon. However i will say that its main feature is not the gameplay, its the story.

Literally COMPLETELY AGREE. Rocket Edition was SO FUN for me. The story was just amazing, like you said. Mechanics, lore, etc. also 10 stars out of 5. I'm actually going to replay it pretty soon I think, cause I finished it and apparently they're not going to make a sequel or anything.

I enjoyed radical red at first until I realized every team is just insanely hyper offensive so around the 5th badge I made a bulky offensive trick room team and beat every battle way too easily. It was like they didn’t know how to react to my mons being faster all of a sudden and they just didn’t stand a chance all the way up through the champion battle
To be fair, Koga's entire gimmick is that his team is literally just the fastest things in the game.
Other than that, I thinks it's because HO teams are usually pretty hard to deal unless you build teams to specifically counter them.

To be fair, it's REALLY hard to make a challenging AI for other team styles. When you can prepare for the battle, status moves that are the core of stall teams are easily countered with a Lum berry, and defensive titans like Blissey are easily turned into setup fodder if controlled by AI.
Personally my only issue with it isn't really the fault of the hack, it's the balance of the last few gens of Pokemon. A lot of the newer offensive threats like Tapu Koko, Ultrabeasts, Mega evos, Dragapult, etc all have insane speed tiers that powercreep the older gen pokemon so hard. It feels really bad to be running pokemon like Heliolisk, Gengar and Mienshao that in their respective gens were considered very fast, but which are regularly outsped by multiple opposing pokemon in each bossfight in RR. But it's not like the AI is cheating for the most part (outside of a few unobtainable Ubers in the last few sections of the game), they're just running normal current-gen threats because literally everything offensive is giga fast now.
dm99102 this is why I'll always prefer older gen hacks compared to this kitchen sink hacks, for lack of a better term. They spend too much time cobbling everything together and make no attempt to balance it, thus pushing you to use only the most powerful mon's instead of giving you more variety, which I assume is what including pokemon up to gen 8 was supposed to do.

He did have some cocky douche moments, but he also gave his advice on things that could've been done differently or the calculations about critical hits. Although in that same video I didn't like how unprofessional he thought Mikey leaving the room and not coming back during his 3rd gym challenge was. It was Michael's FIRST nuzlocke he was devastated that he didn't notice the special defense drop and the next shadow ball killed golbat, so it's only natural he'd lose the will to continue playing. And Michael's even later on in the next video he recorded of the playthrough apologized to his viewers for doing that because he lost a lot of subscribers for acting that way, a lot of viewers got pissed off that he had like 15 minutes of footage of nothing happening other than when Jubilee came into the room to say she didn't know where he went. I feel like the game had a bit of trouble deciding weather it wanted to be serious or weather it wanted to be grand theft auto pokemon edition, which reduced how well both sides worked imo. It leaned much more into the serious side as it went on, which was a good choice, everything from cinnabar onwards was pretty great.
People need to understand he's ranking these based on his experience as nuzlockes, meaning playing them as normal games means different things for non-nuzlocke players.

An interesting romhack I've played that only has 1 major change is Double Emerald. It is just Emerald with a lot of standard QoL changes (and I think re-balanced trainers and levelling, although it does throw a lot of legendaries in as catchable pokemon at specific locations) but every trainer battle and a lot of wild battles are double battles. It allows you to easily use more synergy (like rain dance teams for example) than you normally have to in a pokemon game.

I would recommend Crystal Clear, it might be a little too easy, but it's a proper open world version of crystal, and it's really interesting. Certain battles especially in the early game can be brutal (from the experience of a scrub like me).
It was fun I was wishing I could play more when it ended at Sudowoodoo
this is my favorite. The game level scales according to your gym badges so you are in complete control over the difficulty for the most part
The easiest way of speedrunning crystal clear while also nuzlocking:
Start at celadon city with your starter as a fire type, sweep the grass gym multiple times and maybe catch a pokemon or 2, if you picked something like vulpix you can instantly evolve it with a fire stone in the department store, you can go off from there
Gets a lot of points for the qol and casual nature of the game. Very nice to play an openworld Pokemon game. However, there is so much cringe from the self inserts to the ridiculously stupid AI nicknames.
Honestly the self-inserts and homages in CC are only an issue if you want to make them an issue. They never take themselves too seriously and there's absolutely nothing edgy about them, nothing trying to make the game for adults when the franchise should never be about it, like so many other fangames do. And when it comes to the actual story changes like the extended Eusine participation in the Suicune side quest, and the surprisingly well-written Mewtwo side quest, shows that ShockSlayer could make a straightfaced serious story without being edgy if he wanted, but CC isn't about that.

I'd love to see him play through Crystal Clear. There isn't much storyline, but the fact that you can play it in any order you want is a ton of fun.
Surprised to see Radical Red so low on here. I understand you're reviewing from a very particular viewpoint of Nuzlocking it which is fair enough, but still I feel the need to defend the hack's honour for the sake of people watching this video. If you're doing any non-permadeath playthrough it's stellar, up there with Volt White for me. It's such a well made hack, and the built in level caps are honestly the best. I hate having to self-enforce level caps because I have to constantly check the documentation to know what's coming up next, I prefer to go in blind and scout things out myself.
Personally I'm playing with a sort of "softcore Nuzlocke" ruleset (I can only catch the first 'mon per route, only 1 gift mon per area, but no Permadeath and no reset on wipe). It keeps my favourite part of Nuzlockes (having to improvise a team out of Pokemon you might not normally use) and RR has enough difficulty for me without permadeath. There's so much shit in RR that will catch you off guard and kill you if you don't know the enemy movesets ahead of time (Explosion, choice scarf, unexpected coverage moves like Grass knot, Focus Sash, etc) - I want to spend my time actually playing the game and improvising strategies like I would in a competitive match, not reading documentation and planning an exact strategy for every turn of the battle before it even starts. I think my ruleset is a pretty good compromise for people who like Nuzlocking but aren't hardcore enough to do it in such a brutal romhack.
I love how many times “this is probably the best one” or “worst rom hack I’ve ever played” but he does it for every rom so besides the tier list you can’t tell😂
The most notable part of feature creep is that it ends up pushing the difficulty curve up higher than it really ought to be. I play Pokemon games to have fun; hacks being balanced around EV training and IV breeding turns into a time sink that punishes you for not optimising to the same degree that the game expects. All a hack really needs IMO is to give the enemy trainers bigger teams with decent strategies and trust the player to not trivialise them by overleveling them. (The difficult part of that is constructing the game's level curve so that you don't overlevel by default while not having to grind, because regular grinding is still a time sink even if it isn't as specific as EV training.)
From what I've seen, Renegade Platinum does a good job of being difficult without throwing absurd amounts of bullshit your way a la Emerald Kaizo/Radical Red

Don't need to get a full team faster than I want, I'm allowed to use pokemon I think are cool even if I have better options, and while I can definitely see it being absurdly easy while playing optimally I feel like that's not what I want out of a pokemon game so it's not what I want out of a romhack either.

I just discovered you a month or so ago, and I can't believe it took me this long. Your content is great, it's crazy to watch someone who knows what they're doing run a nuzlocke, and you've got so many to watch. I don't know where to check if this has already been recommeneded or addressed, but I would love to see you play Pokemon Reborn. It's a great game, I've sunk hundreds of hours into it. The Pokemon distribution is so satisfying, with the slow build up of more powerful 'mons, TMs, and tools. And the difficulty is just *chefs kiss*.
Thought I'd give a little more info if anyone was interested:
No fakemon (except unobtainable story encounters), 18 gym badges, full team of 6 in every gym, all non-legendary Pokemon gens 1-7 are in the game (I think the next update will finish including the rest of the legendaries into the post-game), gen 7 learnsets, z-moves and mega evolution in late-game, access to hidden abilities on all wild and trainer Pokemon, extensive use of terrains and weather in battles (+many new terrain types), and a level-down item akin to Rare Candies easily available throughout the game if you want to limit your leveling. The story can be a little edgy and cringy at times, but overall the game's a blast.

I never did a nuzlock, and I probably never will, but I will definetly use this list as a referene for games. I played Storm Silver (because I wanted to get pokemon who evolve by trade without having to actually trade)as if it was a regular Pokemon game and it really is incredibly fun. His assessment of Insurgence is definitely biased as a "professional nuzlocker". No disrespect, it's a valid position and he disclaims that when he starts talking about it. But from a casual player perspective, Insurgence is much higher than C imo. Also, the game does give an option to "un-edgy" the storymode. Not sure how well it works, i didn't play with that option.

A agree with you on feature creep, and would also add "Pokemon creep" to the mix, meaning that some of the newest games give you access to all 1000+ Pokemon. While the features are nice indeed, the games are also created in such a way that you basically have to use them to stand a chance against the bosses. I prefer hacks that are challenging, but still beatable with an imperfect team.

They made it RNG-based and focused on screwing over your fellow competitors. Any game or romhack built around them has to rebuild the mechanic almost from the ground up.

I really enjoyed insurgence and thought it the story wasn't too cringe. I liked that it tried to make an actual story with real consequences and buildup in it and all the features are cool. I usually hate when rom hacks add fake mons to the games but the delta forms I actually really like. Maybe I'm just blind to the cringe after Dark Rising but eh I liked it

Two great hard fangames you should try are reborn and rejuvenation, these games both have 18gyms and have a new thing called field effects. Rejuvenation has difficulties and intense being the hardest. Reborn doesn't but it's already REALLY hard. Not sure if you'd want to but I'd love to see you Nuzlocke these games.
I never see these two games be discussed and it's such a shame, because I think, _strictly gameplay-wise_ , that both are brilliant. The fights are challenging, every gym leader has a full team, level cap, smart AI, fuckton of sidequests that are actually rewarding, so many static encounters that, I think, Jan considers that route/city's encounter so he can't use them all and should probably do some research before getting a regular encounter, but we can, and Rejuvenation has been balanced in v.13 (no more Kantonian Raichu after the first gym).
Then there's the story. I personally like both. I know he won't like either.

Reborn e19 does have a good few options to customize difficulty without dumbing the ai down, so it is much more tailorable for personal skill level/time investment. Like you can give all your pokemon 31 ivs, remove enemy evs, or change up the level scaling of enemy pokemon. Also, there's a ton of quality of life improvements to practically remove grinding
As someone who got into developing fangames and joined a few teams recently it was very interesting to hear the nuzlocking perspective. For my personal projects I have to say they would absolutely not be something to be nuzlocked, as they are more story driven than "boss-rushes". In one project you can't even choose the starter as it is set for story purposes, in the other project you play as a Pokémon in kind of a reverse PMD game where you send teams out instead of going on missions yourself and go exploring yourself while waiting for the teams to return.
And one project that is currently on ice would be probably ranked as "cringe" as well, as it will be a story of how the world is remade by Arceus because of cringe reasons, lol...

Unbound is such an amazing game, perhaps the most polished and feature-packed romhack of them all. But I feel like it's terrible for a Nuzlocke. The arbitrary extra restrictions on all the gyms could easily lead to you getting fucked by bad encounters, and if you just accept the gift pokemon like the Ducklett before Gym 1 then it's totally monotonous. It's probably my one true complaint with the game, the gimmicky gyms are fun the first time but seriously hurt replayability. Because it's essentially made them like puzzles, and once you've solved a puzzle...thats it, you know the solution, and it'll never be as satisfying to solve it again.

A mechanic has been added into the game that allows you to steal pokemon from trainers after defeating them, but you don't have to. At first glance I thought that was the whole gimmick, just stealing pokemon. But the story and lore of pokemon rocket edition and the late game is insanity

@Barack Obama Haachama is a Vtuber from Hololive and in the past year or so has introduced her own storyline through videos and streams. Her original character is Akai Haato and after getting trapped in Australia because of the pandemic she started going a bit bonkers so she developed a kind of "split personality" in the form of Haachama to act out. The Vtuber community decided they were separate entities and she rolled with it developing an actually deep backstory on her own, even going so far as to cut off her own head and swaps between outfits to show which one is in charge for the stream. Until management was like "Woah. Hold up. This is getting to be alot. Probably don't."

Dark rising was bad, Dark rising 2 was fine I guess, but Dark rising 3 looks fucking amazing. Probably because the dev is older and more mature, and knows how to do dialogue and stuff. It looks really promising

I love Volt White! The bosses are super hard! Clay made me restructure my entire team for one fight which I never do/have to do.He made me use Musharna. I've had more fun playing Volt White than I had playing Sword/Shield. I'm almost at Skyla and I already wanna play it again with a new team. My current team is:

it's pretty different from the usual style of pokémon games, but you should try Rocket Red. you probably can Nuzlocke it, but due to the functional differences I think it's worth playing casually once, perhaps while fire truck

Maybe you might enjoy Crystal Clear however it is Gen 2 and has the same level curve. However it is open world for the most part and gives you so much freedom to mess around with. Everything besides wild encounters are based on how many badges you have. It has a better level curve from 8 to 16 badges. I don't know if you have heard of it but just thought I would give my own two cents.

Every drayano hack is pretty damn good! You have alot of options for your party even i had trouble who i should replace, removed.. Its sad that i need to reset renegade platinum since theres a bug i encountered in distortion world where i cant catch giratina nor i can find cyrus..

I am doing it is so difficult on 3rd attempt. It should be SS Teir it is so good. It is arguable the hardest. Now its hard but it doesn't feel like it cheats you which makes me like it way more.

I think some of the characters are very well-written that the more "comedic relief" ones don't land very well. Like Julia, who is "big boom lol" after the train is bombed. Or Randomus. He's well-written for the most part, but him acknowledging the player as a silent protagonist is just kinda dumb and makes him feel gimmicky.
However, these are very nitpicky! I will say that, edgy as it is, a lot of care and consideration was put into it, so I'm not knocking it nearly as hard as my comment above made it sound!

I have beaten Dark Rising multiple times but would never even consider trying to nuzlocke it. That's stupid. No one should do that.
For those who want to beat it in a casual normal playthrough, here is the strat:
1. Catch a Chlorophyll Bulbasaur and a Draught Vulpix. You can now outspeed those lvl70 Zekroms and whatnot that show up to murder your lvl40 team.
2. Abuse save states to not miss Sleep Powder / Leech Seed. Outlast the insanely overleveled boss-monsters until the trainers run out of Full Restores.
3. Get an Alakazam to abuse the 100% flinch chance bug on Zen Headbut. Use Save states to not miss.
4. Get a bulky Dark or Steel type (Ttar, Umbreon, Probopass, etc) before the elite4 to specifically tank the champion's Shadow Lugia's OP dark-type move.
Typical team: Garchomp, Venusaur, Ninetales, Alakazam, Tyranitar, Drizzle Poliwrath (any other water would get crippled by being on the same team as ninetales)
I think the craziest Nuzlocke had to be NAPPY's cuz the mofo somehow AVOIDED wiping TWICE, beat the Nuzlocke with HIS STARTER, beat the sequel with his STARTER(Garchomp)
I was having so much fun with the deltas, gameplay, and music of Insurgence, but it's SO grimdark all the time. Like calm down, you're a pokemon game. Might revisit it someday though.
24:30 The hardest Pokémon game is actually Pokémon pit of 100 trials, but it's 100% not meant to be nuzlocked, as you can only use 6 Pokémon through the whole run, and your item usage is very limited. I don't think you can use Set mode in that hack.

Also the trainer variety kinda sucks, you end up fighting a lot of the same pokemon especially in gyms and vs rocket.

I just finished Blue Kaizo and yeah, having watched you nuzlocking it before made it seem easy, but I was wrong! The early game seems doable, but when you get to the mid-late game you want to shoot your own balls. But I never surrendered and finished the game. I can say, unlike the original one, it makes you feel satisfied when you manage to beat the game, because Blue Kaizo gives real difficulty to the game and I had so much fun. :)
PS: you're an absolute monster at nuzlockes, those overleveled Elite Four were really insane to me to deal with!
Radical Red 3.1 is amazing. It has a lot of entertainment value because of the randomiser. If you're playing any other nuzlocke you already know which encounters you need to get to beat the game. Where's the fun in that.
