I was here to celebrate Otis Redding - yet here I am, reminded of how important and unappreciated Little Richard is. His talent is an absolute shining star of authenticity.
Richard likes to say there wouldn't be any rock-n-roll without him but it actually existed before he started out; it just hadn't been introduced to white audiences. During Richard's heyday Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Elvis also contributed to laying the cornerstone of rock-n-roll.
It's interesting to know that the Beatles used to sleep on Little Richard's floor when he was on tour. Some people will never publicly acknowledge the generosity you've shown to them, but leave it up to Little Richard and he will announce it to the world. Rest in peace, Little Richard... "The King of Rock 'n' Roll."
Why is it that every performance and interview Richard makes us feel like we just chillin in his backyard or living room? He just plain ol country real!
Revisited this induction speech today on Little Richard's death. This is by far the best HoF induction speech I've ever watched. For Richard to come out and do an impromptu of hits and Paul Shaffer & The World's Most Dangerous Band not miss a lick was something special. Little Richard is without question one of the true architects of Rock and Roll, RIP Richard Penniman....

He deserved so much more. A really great guy, I met him a couple of times... I went to his revivals out in south carolina when I was a young man and he was an excellent preacher... The King Of Rock & Roll
I met him in 2003. One of the highlights of my life. I couldn't stop talking about it. One of the most humble, friendly people I've ever met. I wrote him a letter after our meeting. He never wrote back, but I'm sure he got it, because the letter was never returned to me in the mail, and he gave me his personal address.
I have to say the induction was beautiful and honestly the best I’ll ever see. Little Richard nailed it beautifully and gave us a great look into his friend Otis Redding. I shed a few tears when Otis’s wife had to walk off the stage from emotions and Little Richards concerned walk with her. Damn had me crying.
So funny how the great Little Richard turns the induction of Otis into his very own show! These wonderful Rock & Roll legends were such characters... where is their like today?!
How did I go 30 years without seeing this? Absolutely magnificent, every bit of it. I'll watch it more than once. "I feel good! I ain't had nothin' but water."
Otis was a gift. So was Little Richard. Zelma gets choked up real quick talking about her beloved, and Little Richard is right there. Holding her and comforting her from the stage. He was Glitter and Gold.
Acutally, her name is Zelma -- but a lot of people (not just Richard) get that wrong. There are actually more hits for "Zelda" than "Zelma" on Google, even though Zelma is definitely her name.
I watched Him escort Her off stage, He was a gentleman. He was glitter and gold and He was really a humble Man.. He knew the difference from His showman side to His humble servant of the Lord heart. He was one of God's kids..
Little Richard is one of the main reasons there's a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the first place. Fantastic, that inspired singing, yell and laughter, followed by Keith Richards' reaction. He's really feeling it: 7:42. Can't say that about everybody in that room and that's an understatement.
RICHARD WAS ONE OF A KIND! YES A KING! A TRULY GREAT TALENT WITH A FANTASTIC PERSONALITY! I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO MEET HIM IN BEVERLY HILL’S ON HIS BIRTHDAY AND WAS ABEL TO THANK HIM VERY MUCH FOR HIS MUSIC AND HE GAVE ME THAT GREAT SMILE.THANK YOU AGAIN RICHARD FOR THE MUSIC I GREW UP WITH! RIP 🙏 JOE/RON ROMAN.
I love how every time Richard seems on the verge of drifting off into the stratosphere, and I expect they'll have to bring out the men with the big nets to recapture him, he manages to come back close enough to Earth to be able to continue his presentation, and make what passes for perfect sense. I miss him already. Shut up.
I love his confidence, he knows who he is, he knows who he's not..I love his swagger, I love he kept with his craft, and stood strong while fighting against adversity..People were wrong to think he was just a dumb country homosexual from back in the woods in Macon Georgia..Ha! Lil Richard has a lot of wisdom coupled with talent and drive.. I love his raw passion to entertain he paved the way for so many!! And went thru a lot..#TheKingOfRockAndRoll Oooooooooh!! 82+ years old..Best thing his mother could have done, insisting he take piano lessons..
He just loves being the biggest star. I got to meet him at his motel room at the Hyatt on Sunset. I was with some of the Coasters, my buds at the time. Hank Ballard was there too. He was doing gospel and asked me to listen to his new song on a cassette. I did and I told him that the gospel was great, but THIS is Little Richard! He was back. Was when the movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills. He was so sweet and a real peace guy. What a big thrill that was. Just had to share.
I'm sure whoever decided to have Little Richard induct Otis knew what he was going to say and do, and be. But what can you say about Otis that can ever do him justice? He will always be the king of soul and the greatest soul singer ever. Best to just get another great, like Little Richard to get up there and entertain in honor of Otis and show everybody a good time. I think this was great. Little Richard does not make very many appearances, so this was a real honor.
If you want to know about Otis Redding, you have to start with Little Richard. And if you want to know about rock n roll, you may well start from the same.

I grew up in Macon in the 60s......a white dude......Little Richard and Otis were from Macon. They brought people together! They didn't drive people apart.
@@dipdawg1378 Man, I need to ask you for your autograph. If you are interested, I am going to share something with you that I have seldom shared with others. In 1964, the Government feared an outbreak of yellow fever and/or malaria could result from our troops (GOD BLESS THOSE TROOPS) returning home from Vietnam. They initiated a program known as the Aedes Aegypti Erradication Programto seek out potential areas that were favorable breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that carried the diseases. They hired high school aged young people to go DOOR TO DOOR and get permission to look for likely areas. The places for development were things like bird baths, old auto tires...anything that could hold water. We were given "puff bottles" containing powdered DDT to spray on the surface of the water when we found the wigglers (larva). I was one of those hired for that summer job. One day that summer I was dropped off in the only upscale neighborhood in Macon for Black Americans. I remember this like it was yesterday. Given the fact that I am 71 yoa, that says something about how much Otis Redding meant to this white dude. I walked up to the front door of this nice brick home (fenced and gated), rang the door bell and there he stood! Otis Redding answered the door! I was stunned and just stood there....I lost the ability to talk. This imposing man, this "gentle man," grinned and looked at me and said "son, whatcha need?" I made a fool out of myself trying to explain why I was there. Finally, I got it out. He said "you recognize me don't you?" I said "yes sir you're the Big O." I went around to the gate and he let me in and walked around and talked to me....genuinely interested. D.D., this really happened, not a bunch junk. Years later, I found out that meeting him at the residence was a fortunate "draw of the cards." The residence was someone in his family's. I never found out if it was his wife's and childrens, or someone else. He had actually moved to Los Angeles, but he returned to Macon often. I guess that really was my lucky day. When he died in that plane crash it was a sad, SAD, day for Macon and for me. Son, if your mother is still alive, please share this with her. I shouldn't have posted this much on UA-cam, but after reading your comments, I couldn't help but take advantage. And thank you so much for your comments. I have seldom shared this with others, because what is important to me is not always important to others. GOD bless you and your family.
Just saw this for the first time and OMG could this man sing. A true original; never to be outdone. But what is wrong with all the stuffed shirts in the audience. They didn't get him, didn't appreciate what a force of nature they had right in from of them. Jealous, just a bit? Showed him little respect. Boo on them. "I feel so real. I feel so unnecessary" - I mean the man is outrageous. LOVE YOU, LITTLE RICHARD!

Little Richard is so underrated and under appreciated it is criminal. You can see Springsteen and Keith Richards react to his talent. Otis Redding had the same, extremely rare vocal quality (timbre) as Little Richard. Paul McCartney could sometimes approximate this sound. Ronald Iseley also had it. It is like a mixture of a saxophone and a human voice. Again, it is absolutely unforgivable that someone didn't give Little Richard more chances to record his magnificent voice after his initial run in the 1950's. And, why was he not given more credit for originating rock and roll? His songs were recorded by everyone: Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa, The Beatles, ...
Nobody influenced rock and pop music as much as Little Richard. Hell, no one is even talking here about Prince or Rick James. Both of those guys took things straight from Little Richard as well. He defined rock music...was rock music. Can you imagine Springsteen's voice without Little Richard. All those guys know that he was the Architect of Rock and Roll...and they owe him respect...even when he's being silly!
Little Richard, is Comical in his own way I'm glad he's still relevant, he brings happiness where ever he goes , He is Truly the G.O.A.T I'm glad to share the same B day wit him .. December 5

AFCof NYC...there was nothing but water at my table.....hilarious..take my picture. I am going scream like a white lady, mash the button black man...oooh I feel so real, I feel so unnecessary....so funny...SO REAL..I got James Brown out of prison...again.
You know you should actually invent the music to claim the throne. That's the misunderstanding, it's not a prize fight for selling records-- it's about CREATING a new sound that grabs people and gets them to get along. He said it a million times but his greatest disappointment is ya'll not hearing it. Shame.
And even still... Richard sold millions worldwide at a time that was unheard of. He MADE Rock & Roll. I want to be clear here. He brought up James Brown and Otis and Mick like Rodney Dangerfield helped so many comics come up through the business and share ideas together. Elvis and them folk made it popular in civil, normal society later. See, it turned out that the Status Quo didn't realize how many fringe elements there really were and what they truly enjoyed. I'm telling you this from the perspective of a young person whose mother literally grew up during this period and honestly never understood the hype for Elvis or The Beatles even. Mick Jagger, James Brown, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard-- You guys need to better research The Day The Music Died. These people were inventing new music that you now enjoy. Akira Kurosawa has notably amazing musical taste and he was heavil influenced by Jazz and Western Culture. That's why he plays so well here. He's rated pretty average in Japan.
Little Richard was 56 when he burned the roof down with this performance. Before the days of loop tracks and in ear monitors, all pure raw talent. The bass player was also on fire!

@@jodykidp5396 , well said. :)
I am glad he is still blessed to be here to set the record straight.... the architect of rock and roll
YEs, when people forget he reminds them as he should and does it in the most entertaining way. True to his talented self.
He just got excited after a very long career hiatus. But the man is still rockin it! Otis would have enjoyed this.
Some of the people in the audience mocked him but he was very quick he knew how to blow them off he's very genius
They mocked him for good reason. He was a clown. HA, HA

None of them would have a mansion to go home to if it wasn’t for Little Richard
Little Richard was so good, a true legend.
Baaaaaaby the way he carried on just blessed my entire day!! A true king and icon of music!!!
Darrell J. oh yes. I am with you...feelin the same right now. May 13 , 2020..
little richard is not lying about anything here...otis did love him..and all those guys...beatles..mick..etc...WERE...opening acts for him...
"You know...Otis was from my hometown, and I'm from there too...I feel so unnecessary. What are you laughing at. Shut up.". Priceless.
I died when he starts talking about James Brown. I love it. He know what legends are.
I am from Macon too!!!
James Brown from Macon too!
@Rudolph Manor Well, technically from South Carolina (first Barnwell, then Elko), but he moved to Augusta when he was about four or five years old.
@@brandothecatmeow he made James Brown, and many other artist came from him, even the Beatles
Richard was incredible this night, glad it's still on youtube, RIP.
SPONTANEITY. He was a master of it, both in just being him and musically.
Watching in 2019 . This is pure gold. Black legend
All music awards should be like this, sing the persons songs who they are giving the award too, man be so cool 😆😆😆
Yeah, but nobody sings a TOm Waits song as good as Tom Waits. Unless they completely redo it and add gospel choir.
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER HE COULD SING THE PHONE BOOK. LUV YOU RICHARD !
Shut up.
"SHUT UP" LIL RICHARD WOULD MAKE YOU LAUGH !!!!!!
I'm jealous
awesome story:)

The hall of Fame rep.trying to rush
Richard off the stage he stole the show.
"NO NO!."
I agree. This was great, but Sam Cooke over Otis Redding in my book.
They’re all legends
R. Alexander That’s where you’re wrong buckaroo
If you want to know about Otis Redding, you have to start with Little Richard.
And if you want to know about rock n roll, you may well start from the same.
A. Bandini,. true ! " The Emperor " , Rock and Roll's Big Bang theory in the flesh,, Little Richard.

I agree......
Like the fact that little Richard is a real person and not phoney, And from what I understand is also Kind.
He's a pastor nowadays.
I opened for Little Richard and he was very kind! Awesome man!
I grew up in Macon in the 60s......a white dude......Little Richard and Otis were from Macon. They brought people together! They didn't drive people apart.
@@edwardmunson3896 Otis Redding is my moms cousin.
12:44 Little Richard calling out Mick Jagger might be one of the greatest things I've ever seen LOL
MIZZTOTAL So hoe did Little Richard call out Mick Jagger?
Mick acted extra English there ... Hhhh
A legend the architect of rock n roll my favourite miss him loads
Love how he cracks himself up!
Yassssssssss!!!
Cocaine is a hell of a Drug
ya gotta love em, the king.
I keep coming back to watch him sing all these Otis Redding songs with so much love for Otis. You don't see this much nowadays between artists.
I keep coming back to this man what a performance...the greatest, God rest your soul....
What A Performer A Shining Light Best induction ever on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame No Rock and Roll without Little Richard RIP legend!
He does look decent and he has outlived a lot of the old school singers!!!!
All but Jerry Lee Lewis
But I'm aware that when you wrote that comment before Chuck Berry and Fats Domino passed. Saddest thing ever, those deaths were.
Jerry Lee is too mean to die. Little Richard is too sweet to die. Both musical phenominas.@@nochannelmusician769
He outlived the youth of his time!

Little Richard's voice is astounding... I'm just blown away at the power and style of his voice.
I Love Lil Richard!! His Autobiography Was Off The Chain!! Wonderfully Written!!!

Thanks very much 👍👍 ua-cam.com/video/ao52XvnhXEI/v-deo.html *NIGHT TRAIN TO MEMPHIS* country guitar cover by *Duane 🤠Eddy*
Only little Richard could turn an induction of another artist into his own concert and get away with it
What a fascinating delightful human being
This was fun to watch.
I so agree
So true
Nobody influenced rock and pop music as much as Little Richard. Hell, no one is even talking here about Prince or Rick James. Both of those guys took things straight from Little Richard as well. He defined rock music...was rock music. Can you imagine Springsteen's voice without Little Richard. All those guys know that he was the Architect of Rock and Roll...and they owe him respect...even when he's being silly!
@Quashie Well said. Otis and Little Richard had such impeccable pitch as well as rhythmic flexibility. Great musicianship and a wild ride.
The rockers in the audience be were getting off on him. They idolized him and the other r and b and blues guys. Keith was grooving
GOOSEBUMPS as he sang Dock of the Bay. AMAZING! little Richard is incredible !
Little Richard, is Comical in his own way I'm glad he's still relevant, he brings happiness where ever he goes , He is Truly the G.O.A.T I'm glad to share the same B day wit him .. December 5
I cannot get enough of that laugh! A true true TRUE icon. R&B had a baby and somebody named it Rock N Roll! We love you Little Richard!
Yes. He was a JOKE. HA, HA
I absolutely love Lil Richard!! I just smile the entire time watching him Lmbo...R.I.P.
Little Richard taught Pul McCartney and the other Beatles how to "scream" on "She Loves You" and "Twist and Shout". This is a true story. /|\

I think Little Richard is a very wonderful person there is no replicating him he's the best God of rock and roll shut up laugh out loud he's just and nobody be like him ever love you Little Richard

He was not "reverend," he was Pastor Penniman. RIP
Is there any one out there who still thinks Elvis is the King? Long Live King Richard!
Bugsy Cline Yeah, most of the world population do think Elvis was the king. And He was.
kings loose their title when they die... dumbass
Too much marketing on him, after all he was white. Little Richard and James Brown had done much more than him to music.
Mick Jagger, James Brown, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard--
You guys need to better research The Day The Music Died. These people were inventing new music that you now enjoy. Akira Kurosawa has notably amazing musical taste and he was heavil influenced by Jazz and Western Culture. That's why he plays so well here. He's rated pretty average in Japan.
Little Richard really knows how to get the party started! Lol
Could you image just being around him, touring with him, I loved his energy!
WOW! I really sounded good singing Otis' songs! CHEERS to Little Richard and Otis...two of my all time favorites! :)
He killing it yessss👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🥺🔥🔥🤗🤗🤗I'm in tears watching this RIP may God may God have mercy just a beautiful voice
Little Richard was 56 when he burned the roof down with this performance. Before the days of loop tracks and in ear monitors, all pure raw talent. The bass player was also on fire!
