This is my favorite part of the album. it's at this point that the outcome of the entire story was determined. if when protoman called out to the crowd someone had stood, and fought protoman would undoubtedly have opted to save humanity, and with megaman and protoman together wily may have been overthrown.
I like to imagine protoman resembles Joe. So when he ultimately betrays light, it just hits that much harder and really lays the guilt on even worst and just another reason light didnt want mega to continue the fight.
I absolutely love the electronic filter in Protoman's voice that can be heard better when he spits the words out with hatred. From an idealist to a cynic. Such a small step to make.
Not me listening to this 11 years later and still going through an entire emotional journey as Protoman's voice breaks into electric dissonance with every verse
As badass it may sound i found these guys in October 2020 and have been stuck listening to act 1 and act 2 everyday at work wen I can cause it's sooooo goooood
@markyjoe1990 It's made clear in the lyrics and insert that none of the people in the crowd ever so much as consider standing on their own, but if they had, Proto Man would have immediately turned on Wily. Notice that he never directly tells them to fight the robots. That's not what he wants. He just wants them to prove that they're willing to oppose Wily of their own accord, not simply because they have a powerful leader.
God, I love the fact that you can hear the robotic voice overlaying with Protoman, it shows how far he's fallen, but the fact that the human voice is still there shows that he still believes what he set out to do.
Lyrics: You're trying to understand. I told you your brother had been killed. Yet, here he stands in the very shadow of the man you came here to destroy. You came here to avenge his death. You came here to save mankind. You see now, you cannot do both. Tell me now. Is there a man among you here? Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight? Tell me Man, is there not one in all your ranks? Is there not one who values courage over life? They looked to me once. Now they turn to you. Do you understand now? Do you see that the truth is they don't want to change this? They don't want a hero. They just want a martyr, a statue to raise. I've given everything I can. There are no heroes left in man. So it begins! No matter which one of us lives, the ground we're standing on will crack and blow away. And you will fight. But when you fight, you'll fight alone. And in the end you'll see there was no other way. I've been here before. I've stood where you stand. They called me their hero, The Hero of Man. But why should we save them When they stand for nothing? If they deserve life, LET THEM STAND FOR THEMSELVES. We've given everything we can. There are no heroes left in man. They'll watch you die to save their lives. They will not stand here by your side. We've given everything we can. THERE ARE NO HEROES LEFT IN MAN! So let them watch as we decide the very fate of all mankind!
This song teaches us so much, no matter how strong, or how big your opponent is, you must fight for what you believe in regardless if you fall or not. Its the simple act of courage that will inspire others to stand for themselves. That...I believe...is true freedom.
their show is awesome. their music is awesome. their lyrics are awesome. and they have a message in these songs, outside the literal words. love this band, and always have since i found them years ago.
by refusing to help the humans, Mega Man is teaching them a painful lesson: that liberation cannot come from some figure above, one must struggle for it oneself
This is probably my favorite song from part one. It's so emotional. I tear up whenever I'm singing along with this album, but it's especially difficult when I get to this track.
Protoman never demanded anybody die for his cause, only that they prove willing to fight for their own freedom. Guaranteed suicide defeats the purpose of fighting for freedom. Too bad he never got to meet Joe!
Both Albums really get me going. The Protomen really know how to tell a story through music. I can feel every emotion of the characters. LOVE this music.
Easily my favourite song on the whole album, one I can easily listen to on its own, but there's some serious power going from the white hot anger of Vengeance to this.
The whole theme of the entire first album seems to be a deep-seeded root of evil. A form of sloth, as it were. People become complacent with the convenience of a hopeless situation, by justifying there's nothing they can do. Too afraid to do anything, they allow the dictator to rule over them simply because it's the easiest way to survive. Freedom within imprisonment. A true hero is hard to discern. It's likely they're trying to imply that anybody can be a hero, if they just stand up.
This song is so deep and I can just imagine how megaman must have felt to know that he has to fight the very person he was trying to avenge. Very deep on so many levels it brings tears to my eyes!
I believe that deep down, Protoman wants the crowd to fight against them, to stand up for themselves, and it's why he says what he does. But, the humans being so weak-willed as they are, they don't bother with it, they just do what they had with him; Leave the hero of man to his fate, whether he'll die or not, because they're not willing to risk their own deaths.
@markyjoe1990 No. He just wants them to stand against the army of robots in actual defiance. What they've done in the past is side with whoever they see as more powerful. He just wants them to stand for themselves and oppose Wily, even if it isn't in physical force.
There are still heroes left in man, only because we are not utterly crushed. In Wily's world, there had been decades of suppression, of both free action and free thought. There simply was nothing left for the people to believe in, and freedom was a concept they wanted, but yet could never take, unable to understand the concept of being free anymore.
Thank you for being the most coherent response in this thread. That said, I sometimes wish that the Protomen would release some 'bonus tracks' that would fill in these holes, seeing as how they have a better sense of the plot after Act II. As it stands, Dr. Light is the only rounded-out character in any of this. Megaman and Protoman are forever trapped in the shadow of those who came before them, fulfilling expected roles. The band could explore this aspect of it, but it feels like they won't.
I think, personally, that this would work better as a stage production than a film production. Imagine going to an auditorium to watch someone perform a live opera of the Protomen on stage.
Krazykinkykat has a point.. emotion is needed, trust me.. I had blocked my emotions for a long time.. but I learned.. and saw how stupid I was.. I can't control them now and I can't properly determin just what I'm feeling anymore... but when I didn't have emotion I was nothing.. I just didn't care.. failing school, hurting those around me, hurting myself.. it didn't matter.. but now.. now I see how important emotion is. we need them to survive and for the human race to live on.
as an observer, I just want to yell at mega and light to keep fighting, 'cause until there are no more humans left, until your hands of iron and worn to nothing more, there will come a time where humankind will eventually learn
goosebumps everytime, 'Tell me now, is there not a man among you here? is there no one who will stand up and try to fight? tell me man! is there not one in all your ranks is there no one who values courage over life? do you see now they dont want to change this, they don't want a Hero, they just want a Martyr! A statue to raise!
not to mention the fact the the calmer segment of the song followed by that turbulent explosive cacophony before his final verse is when reading the scripted accompaniment of this song by the Protomen wherein Protoman himself sees his fathers face in the gathering crowd then proceeds to descemate many of his own troops in horror of his current situation and to presumably make his way closer to Megaman for his final battle.
Protips for teenagers thinking about emotions; 1) When someone is arguing that emotions are stupid and that they are better for not having them, they probably haven't developed past the early stage of getting all of their opinions from a single source. 2) When someone is arguing that all emotions are 'deep' and 'meaningful', they've watched too many cartoons growing up. 3) Realizing that a strong negative emotion is an indicator that you need to learn something is the first step to growing up.
@SephurMcGoul It's not about whether they can win, it's whether they will. Protoman even acknowledges that actually fighting would be hopeless ("Is there not one who values courage over life"). The point of it is that if just one human would be willing to give it all up for their own freedom, he'd be perfectly willing to fight and die for them, because they've proven they're worth saving. That's the point of a hero; someone willing to die for what they believe in, and inspire others.
Don't run away from your problems, don't hand them off to someone else or expect someone to rise up and solve them for you. I think that's what they're trying to say here.
@FoxtrotNinja Actually, in the liner notes for the album, it says "Those most eager to watch the bloodshed were the first victims of the slaughter." Mankind was there to watch the fight, not to fight for themselves. :(
Yes, and videos are for your eyes. Hey! Did you know there's this really cool way to synchonize music with visuals in order to give you a newer experience of the music? I think they're called... MUSIC VIDEOS! :O
I believe the word at the end is actually raze, not raise.. To Raze something is to destroy it, or burn it.. I believe it is more fitting of Protomen's words. :)
Without emotions, we'd eventually just cease to exist. No one would care whether they lived or died, no one would long to raise children, no one would even want to have sex. So in a way, we need emotions to keep the human race going, not only to have a meaningful life.
Mega Man's 25th Anniversary is next month... The best gift they could give would be to say "GOTCHA! Legends 3 and Universe were never actually cancelled!"
I never cared about justice, and I don't recall ever calling myself a hero. I have always only fought for the people I believe in. I won't hesitate... If an enemy appears in front of me, I will destroy it! Zero
@markyjoe1990 (continued) Even Protoman at his worst would probably have counted it if anyone had tried to help Megaman, they didn't need to stand completely on their own. And yeah, that help might get them killed, but people die in revolutions. If no one is willing to risk that, then they must not want it that much.
Last I heard, they could do music based on the game, as long as there was no usage of the likeness resembling anything Capcom related hence the album art not having a big ol' mega buster on it :D
