  • According to the Swedish State Television News (STV Nyheter) of May 9, 2017, Stockholm municipality has presented an urban redevelopment program that entails pedestrianization of some streets in the city's downtown (CBD). Some of the streets earmarked for pedestrianization under the program are Kungsgatan, Hamngatan, as well as some streets bounding Gustav Adolfs torg on the northern end of Gamla stan. Also presented earlier as part of the program is further fully pedestrianization of Drottninggatan northwards to Kungstensgatan. Currently Drottninggatan which is main shopping street in Stockholm with over 70 000 pedestrians using it every day, is only fully pedestrianized from its southern end at the junction with Strömgatan to Tegnérgatan in the north.
The proposed urban redevelopment program is within the framework of the city's Comprehensive Plan (översiktsplan) of 2012, alias Vision for the City 2030, that advocates among others, creation of a city environment that is attractive and friendly to pedestrian, cyclist, and collective traffic. In terms of traffic circulation, the overall goal of the comprehensive plan is to ensure considerable reduction in vehicular traffic in the CBD. Implementation of the proposed urban redevelopment program is estimated to cost between SEK 700 million and 1 billion, with property owners who will benefit from the redevelopment program contributing to the cost.
