Here is TN we call them Arm-A-Dill-A I never seen one either until I moved here a month ago. And once again Matt kills it with killer corn and eagles! 😁
Matt, when it comes to the long vs short sleeve shirt problem, I suggest looking into using cycling arm warmers. Wear a short sleeve shirt and start the day with the arm warmers on. When you get warm, just slide them down to your wrists, and now you have a sweat rag. They go up and down my arms all day, every day. And if I want to take them off while on the move, I just unbuckle my waist belt, slide a buckle through them, and click. Always within reach. They work in all conditions: cold, rain, sun, vegetation, etc. There is no need for an extra long sleeve hiking shirt. To be honest, my arm warmers are on my top 10 most important gear to have list. I carry leg warmers, too, which are used mostly when at camp, but I will hike with them only when necessary. There is no need to carry a pair of long camp pants, weather permitting, of course.
I did bike centuries for a few years in the early 2000s and I did use those. The problem is the ones that I had were black, warm, and I don’t think they would offer as much mosquito protection as loose cloth. I have been debating trying to find a pair of spandex legwarmers, but I’d have to find them big enough and again they would need to be non-black. As far as the long sleeve hiking shirt, the sun protection it offers is why I wear them almost exclusively
Neat panther den! Taters would really have been thrilled (and terrified!) had you also actually found a panther. Better to stick with armadillos. Leprosy, sure, but less likely to tear your face off and eat it! Good day in the wilderness with a promise of new shoes in the offing. Hike on (gingerly)! Tortoise
Cache River State Natural Area is the northern most Cypress Swamp in the US. It is near Belknap IL. About 20 miles south of Goreville. We used to drive down from the Chicago area to visit.
Gives "trail cutting the rocks" a whole new meaning... It was magnificent bravery knowing they were watching and "allowed you to pass".While different and neat the armadillo carries leprosy, salmonella, tapeworm.A traveling you tuber got bit by one as he walked about his campsite . Totally unexpected, totally unprovoked Bit unusual hearing of them so far North.I guess visual admiration will have to do.Great section of trail and geology
I've seen more Armadillos in Illinois and Kentucky over the last 10 years after a lifetime of thinking they were just a Texas thing. Their territory is certainly spreading. I should add that I've never seen a live armadillo. Apparently there armor is not impervious to automobiles.
Pretty cool place you went through. I was wondering. In some of those small towns what is the reaction from the locals when Jen ask for a vegetarian option?
So we had that issue in the south like Alabama and Florida, where places we would stop would literally all be meat, maybe one veggie thing like cauliflower or okra but it would be fried. Hasn’t been an issue in the Midwest, they seem pretty civilized as far as having lots of veggies ;) often they have a whole veggie section of the menu
My BIL got bit by a Lone Star Tick and turned into a vegetarian. He said he would get sick if he tried to eat beef. After about 30 years the effects wore off and he can eat a steak again
There is a side loop that goes straight through the rocks. There are small variations on the American discovery route and one of them went through one of them went around.
I didn't catch that towards the end. But, in the scorching heat and baking in the sun, it's still going to be better than a t-shirt or tank top in my opinion.
There is always a certain amount of foot pain considering we are pushing 25 miles a day fairly regularly. But yes, plan is to replace the next set a little sooner closer to 400 miles instead of 500
Oh, Taters, don’t make him into a dirty vegetarian that way. My reasoning: 1. Butter. 2. Ice cream. 3. Mexican restaurants 4. Tasty cute fuzzy critters 5. Fish/Gator/Fowl, while delicious, become very boring without #1. Depending on the day #6 may be less effective in convincing you... 6..While Alpha-Gal is slightly more predictable than gluten, the allergy itself is more wicked. ☠️💀😵🪦🤷♀️😅😳 Why would all this matter to you if you’re not the one who gets it? 7. It is actually kind of gut wrenching being able to enjoy all of those things in front of your loved one when they can’t have it. (Though that might be something you could come to enjoy…) 😇
Wow....no chemical lab in those caves..and Armadillos are called Texas speed bumps
Thanks,great going. 👊🏼✌🏻

I've copied this out and am going to think about it, thank-you.

@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes With leg warmers you'd need to learn to dance.
I’ve never seen an armadillo either. Didn’t realize they were so big! Good luck with the tooth
Kudos for setting up camp well away from the panther den city. You guys are great wilderness spirits!
That Sulphur Shelf mushroom was a gem and is very tasty when sauteed.
Cool Panther Den both figuratively and literally. Beats corn for days I'm sure.
That red line route is really crazy!
I'm glad there were no panthers in the den. Armadillos are so common around here they are a nuisance. Thanks for sharing.

Love the panther den campsites. I will make it a short day just to camp and climb on the rocks in that area
wow I didn't think armadillos were that far north
Panther Den is the coolest section of the trail so far. 😎✌

We have probably seen 30 or 40 run over in the last couple of days
Mt apology for the summer in the mid-west. Makes one wonder what the migrants saw in living around here.
$300 for two nights seems high to this old man. Especially in bumb f Illinois.
The problem of course is in the middle of nowhere you are stuck with whatever options are available
Cotton/poly dress shirt for hot weather. Sleeves can be rolled up, open buttons to expose chest and belly, close up for sun protection, dries quickly.
Hey Y'all. A good day. By the way Taters, glad you got to Matt before he started falling apart from tooth to toes.
The heat index was in the mid 90s until about midnight for my area a couple of nights ago.

@@jenniferblackie2027 Good luck getting a diet soda in the south too. Not many options.

Day 78. Armadillo. Odd creatures.
Did the trail take you through those rocks? Or were you just exploring anyway, way cool?

Masochist needs a sun hoodie.
Like the one I am wearing?

You mentioned foot pain again I think yesterday and today the shoes are toast. Replace them sooner please mate.

@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes love seeing you out there. Glhf
Panther Den City looked pretty durn cool. Did the trail take you through the maze or were you just exploring whilst there?
There are multiple variants of the trail going through there, but the latest version I had went through the cave and those slots
