Taking a HUGE Log Off a Trash Pile and Turning it Into a Lamp!

  • It's the biggest piece of wood I've had on this lathe so far! I pulled off a literal trash pile, and decided it was finally time to try and make one of those lamps you all keep asking for!

    Love the lamp! I would be really careful engaging with wild street piles - you can leave your scent on them, and then their mother pile won’t take care of them ):

      Such good advice. I made sure to closely watch the pile for a period of several days and was confident it must've lost its mother pile somewhere along the way

      I know this is a joke, but for anyone who actually thinks this about birds, deer, or any other baby animal, it isn’t true at all. Never was, and even decades after the original claim, people still repeat this myth every day. You are fine to touch babies, just don’t keep them for too long.

      @@SnailHatan It's still far better to not mess with 'abandoned' babies until you've watched for a long while and know they're abandoned, especially if you're moving them from a spot that isn't unsafe. Especially with baby kittens, mom has to go hunting and isn't going to be guarding the litter 24/7 the way pet cats who have their food dish right next to them do.

      Always gonna let the rot be rot over here (even though adding a bunch of resin would probably finally get the longform algorithm on my side, lol), a bunch of glittery colored resin is simply not my personal style.

      I think resin is dope in those tables and things that people make with raw wood, but this piece definitely looks better without it. The natural architecture created by the rot feels so tangible this way. Truly a gorgeous lamp.

    Hey Justin. My HOA decided to replace our aged water pipes and I was super bummed to find out they're going to have to take out my tree. LEDs? How? It looks great as a traditional lamp. And soooo interestingly beautiful!
    I like the rotted section as well, gives a huge amount of character. I am not like some others that don't apparently like resin at all, there are plenty of pieces with and without resin that I like. To me it is personal style and how the individual piece looks. Your chosen shape is not my personal favorite, but it does help show off the characteristics of the wood, which on this piece (and MANY of your others) I find absolutely gorgeous and so interesting! And as you have said over and over, bringing out individual characteristics of the wood is your POINT. Since I don't work with wood, my fear is that the finish in those deep spots won't stop the rot process. Always looking to see the new things you find.

    • @sentath
      @sentath 9 місяців тому

      Not sure about the how. But, let me present the why. I think it would be amazing to have just a tiny number of glimmering light sources out of sight down in the rot cavern so that the depth and complexity of it can be shown off even under less than ideal lighting. Even just as he turned the lamp on at 9:03 the video and my old low contrast eyes could no longer see any detail, just the bare outline of the cavern. It is a fascinating bit of topography and should be beautiful in more than just direct side illumination.

    What a great looking lamp brother. As always, it's been a really pleasure to watch you bring another piece to life. That rot section gives it so much more character than you could've hoped for in my opinion. Sending love from Boise, Idaho.

    First time watching your videos (I’ve been occasionally running by your stuff on YT reels) and I love the content!
    It teaches people to appreciate what would be junk wood, AND can educate people about wood and where it came from!
    The editing is cute and you seem like such a wonderful person and I can only wish the best for you and your Journey as a craftsman/UA-camr! ^^🌸✨
