I paint vintage corvettes for shows. Yes strip to bare fiberglass and then assess. Any stress cracks must be ground into a V and replaced with resin and chopped fiberglass mat. I usually take roven mat and chop it up into 1/4-3/8" long hairs and stir it in. After filling the areas block sand then 1-1 Epoxy, then highbuild wet on wet. Block until correct. Sealer, base, and clear... with flex agent. Difficult to do one in less than 100 hours. I have dug all kinds of nonsense out of wheel lips and hood surrounds, superglue, bondo, permatex, the only thing that lasts is resin and mat.
Exactly. The spiderweb-thin crazing or whatever - on boats anyway- are finishes that don’t have the same flexibility as the fiberglass. If any crazes were on that Vette it probably wasn’t in the ‘glass itself.
Great video and great work, though I’d like to point out that none of the panels are fiberglass, except possibly the aftermarket hood and the rear spoiler. Two of the most common myths about Corvettes are that they are all made of fiberglass and the use of gelcoat. Corvettes have not been made of fiberglass since 1972. Starting in 1973 they were made from SMC (Sheet Molded Compound, which has some commonalities to fiber; however, is not fiberglass). As for gelcoat, it has not been used at the factory since 1954, at which time manufacturing changed from hand laid to press molded panels. I didn’t hear you mention gelcoat; however, I just thought I’d put it out there for anyone who might read this.
Youre right. I have done it 3 times and now doung it again with sons 72. If its oem paint its not as hard to strip. Usually a razor blade works to the brown oem primer but if they are not oem paint. It usually needs chemically stripped with razors or walnut blast. Its a PITA hundreds of hours to do it right.
Great, great artist. Concerning this fiberglass, I think you can order a product called Fiber Fill 4:1 from Evercoat, that here in Europe is imported by a company near my home called INDASA. If you use a 3.0 mm spray gun, it's easy to apply fiberglass over the body and it will halt the problems beneath. Crazing, cracks from old polyester jobs, etc.
Great just Job mate. There called stress fractures. Fibregalss is very flexible. U filled it well. Glass will keep flexing but looks like u have a long term result for the customer
The gunman> anyone else.... I strive to be as good as this some day Also if you do any more gun reviews can you please review the Graco Air Pro 1.4? I've been considering buying it but I'd rather hear your review on it first
Hi mate, just wondering if you've ever encountered, waterborne basecoat ever turning black , mainly on wheel arches ect under neath the clear coat ? We always use etch primer and follow the rules ect, even our tech rep is scratching his head ? Thanks Richard
G'day Gunny, I've just sprayed my ute in 2k direct gloss ,unfortunately I'm no spray painter and there's quite abit of orange peel what's your advice on smoothing it out with a buff ,im fearful that if I take the direct gloss shine off it will reduce the uv protection even after a dry sand and polish what should I do. Really enjoy your video, really helpful. Regards greg
good morning!! im in the process of restoring a vh commodore would u or have u ever resprayed a car with all the panels off placed around the car where they would be in the booth. spray painter wants to do like this just wondering if its normal? thank you!! love from a newb haha
Crikey that looks good. The owner has to be a happy guy. Looking forward to the next torana update too! I reckon the term is "top bloke" you're a top bloke gunny. Regards from WA USA
I'm actually surprised at your gun choice! , not to knock the ani or the pro lite ... The perfect vid to show you don't need to spend $1,300 on a clear gun to get good results though 👍
Gunny mate do you reckon it’s safe to purchase a Sata 5000 B RP Digital from SpraygunsDirect ?? There are so many knockoffs out there mate that I just don’t know who to purchase one from …
Dreading this. Got an 80 model to do. Some meathead already sanded it and not a good job. SIDE NOTE: dont use wax grease and silicone remover on fiberglass. Use acetone. But you didn’t get to glass from what I saw.
My 1973 Stingray is remarkably similar. It had custom paint over old school Kondar primer. I stripped it with a razor blade and 80 grit. Then I went epoxy, G3 polyester, filler primer, epoxy sealer, color, clear. If I didn’t use polyester I would have had to glaze coat the entire car. Those cars are rough as you know. Good work. It makes me wish I would have kept the pearl white. But I went black.
Gunny I've watched you from the beginning and you have improved out of sight this thing str8 of the gun is way better than a lot of spray jobs I've seen of UA-cam after a wet sand and polish keep up the outstanding work mate and that cars as tuff as f#ck .
G'day Mr Gunman, WOW. You can walk around that machine all day and add your amazing paint job to the mix and it just never gets tired. I'm loving the work your doing on the Torana but it's always good to see you in action at work. So thanks for sharing man ✌️ Peace from Melbourne 3810.
Hell yeah!!! that's the Gunman doing what he does best, have to agree mate one of your best looking jobs ever that off the gun finish is superb Gunny👏👌👍 I'm not a lover of white cars but with the blue pearl it took it to another level and it looks really nice. I don't care what you put up mate I'll watch it as I know it will be interesting as there is always something to learn from your vids👍👍John UK
The "real" way is to dig right to the fiberglass so deep thet all of the "crack" is gone, then using fiberglass matt and resin > sand it down and then give the fiberglass coat of topcoat (gelcoat with wax), get the wax off before sanding and then start priming. Sometimes epoxy resin may be better for repairs than polyester resin.

It's definitely safe from Sprayguns Direct, they only stock genuine guns.

Sometimes epoxy resin may be better for repairs than polyester resin.
But the problem with epoxy is that nothing else will stick to it if future repairs are required. Polyester is plenty strong enough by itself.
