@@windowsmizu416 I think the reporter was right to push for a substantial answer. He prefaces the question with humility, and the contradiction between Sandler's "low art" reputation and the undeniably good performance they'd just seen was definitely an elephant in that room. It's one thing to like Adam Sandler and think he's funny, but it's another to realize he'd be so good for this role. So what did PTA see in him that the rest of us didn't?
@@sammythemc Yeah idk I think the reporter seemed pretty genuine, he phrased it pretty delicately and he's smiling when PTA just shuts him down with "I love him!" like I think he was just curious like everybody else because it did seem a completely odd fit and that was a good enough answer for him. It's not like now where we all know PTA just loves Sandler and didn't think he needed "fixing" or anything, this was the first time anybody asked him about it. There's also more appreciation now for how good Sandler can be with everything he's done since. This interview is so meta when one actually takes into account the tipsy laughter of everyone accentuated by the fact that the questions were weird and their answers were like literally Punch Drunk Love running live in front of your eyes.
Adam Sandler deserves to be at that table, and any table with any “A List Actor”. It truly makes me emotional when people talk down on him. He’s a true treasure for American cinema. Uncut Gems, meyerowitz stories, punch drunk love, and all his comedies are amazing to me. He’s been my #1 and will forever be.
Love how everyone is intrigued and dying to know “why oh why PTA would ever consider such an actor like Sandler”. And he responds as if THEY are stupid. Because they are.
Man, excellent moderator. Great introductions to everyone, then stays mostly quiet-deftly selects questions, makes sure the guy isn't in the way in the camera, keeps things running smoothly, and then he has pre-prepared questions for the participants that aren't getting asked anything.
I think because at the time, most people thought of Adam Sandler as this "dumb and funny" guy, and nobody took him seriously as an actor. Paul Thomas Anderson is a serious filmmaker, and he made drama films, so that's why people were surprised he would cast Sandler.
My favorite PTA press conference moment is still The Master at Venice when some guy was just like "I'm starting my own religion about PDF files, what would it take to join, you guys, what would it take?"
Phillips Seymour Hoffman is one of the most amazing actors of my time. He can play any role to perfection and has always left an impact in every movie he has been in. May he rest in peace.
i rewatched 50 first dates a couple weeks ago and i just got a big crush on adam out of nowhere.... ive been watching a bunch of his movies. hes really cute and sweet. i really liked punch drunk love.
I just Rewatched "Punch Drunk Love" a few days ago Great, Interesting Movie. Adam Sandler seems in the Interview like the Character he plays in the Movie. A shy guy. In more recent years in his interviews, Adam didn't seem like he was Shy at all.
Anderson, my goodness, he loved the ole sniff back then! He clearly hasn't had a wink of sleep and he clearly topped himself off before the press conference to try get through it!
What’s also funny is he got the idea of Phantom Thread when he was sick and Maya took car of Paul with such care and love. That’s how he got the idea for the movie

I genuinely believe they are all stoned on this panel. Not “haha what kinda drugs did you guys take before you did this” but rather “you intentionally took substances” :|
Absolutely hilarious to see how serious the Cannes takes itself, as opposed to the baked panel, including a completely fried PTA.
I don't think I've ever seen a director having this much fun at a press conference.
cocaethylene
This is the greatest thing ever. How many drugs is Paul on? And Philip Seymour Hoffman's laugh :'(
Exactly 3 drugs: alcohol, nicotine and cocaine.
Where's the weed and acid
I know right, he seems so stoned lol!
This entire interview should be archived and preserved and canonized as something that is important aesthetically and culturally.
Paul Thomas Anderson's work still isn't in the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress, I think this would be a good start
Crazy to think this is 20 years old

paul is absolutely CHARBROILED

13:36 what a joy to watch PTA just completely shut down such an elitist question with the utmost sincerity.
It's not really an elitist question but it is a bit harshly inappropriate to be relentless about it.
@@ethidian3444 Obnoxious, it's still substantial so it's not necessarily pretentious I guess, but yeah, relentless and a little socially unaware.

Been on a paul thomas anderson binge lately. greatest director.
This interview is so meta when one actually takes into account the tipsy laughter of everyone accentuated by the fact that the questions were weird and their answers were like literally Punch Drunk Love running live in front of your eyes.
I feel bad for the fact that no one got their questions answered, but at the same time it made this a wildly funny and entertaining press Q&A
their questions were all just idealized, it was just a simple movie that resonated with people so well they over think it.
33:15 is heartbreaking in retrospect.
My heart sank a little when he said that! RIP

i felt the exact same way, these guys were super pretentious and looking down their glasses at him. its made me not like cannes
Someone's in love 💓
Big Daddy is fantastic, loved it as a kid still love it now.
Also Spanglish, Reign Over Me and Funny People, when talking about the movies where he does more than his typical comedy performance.
This made me dislike a bit more. Made me love Sandler more, what a funny down to earth gentleman

After seeing Inherent Vice, I don't doubt.
He's just a reserved, calm and composed person who's kind of socially awkward like many filmmakers are. I honestly don't think Anderson was stoned.
Mr. Hoffman's comments pulled at my heart.
he got a good question and gave the answers with the most substance

what a treasure of a video
33:09 oh wow. It did happen, Mr. Hoffman. And it was masterful.
Why are they so surprised he cast Adam Sandler when he cast Marky Mark in Boogie Nights? XD

Adam Sandler is great in this movie. I love his comedies. His dramatic roles are extremely intelligent and well done.
