You need to listen carefully to the lyrics, it is an absolutely heartbreaking song about a soldier dying on the battlefield and crying about his life and his love that he will never see again in Galveston.
Not quite. The soldier is NOT dying . . .but Jimmy Webb very carefully didn't promise that he would survive to go home. The question is completely wide open, with no answer even suggested.
I love this song. The original recording is much better (slower and richer) than this version, though. This is rushed and for the most part in a higher pitch than the original. It loses a lot.
He was such a legendary performer. Rhinestone Cowboy, Wichita Lineman, Gentle On My Mind are all classics. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he recorded a song for his wife entitled I'm Not Going to Miss You. For anyone who's family has been touched by that terrible disease, the song is truly heart wrenching.
"Wichita Lineman" OMG! Gets me every time. Jimmy Webb, who wrote some of Glen Campbell's greatest hits, was the most wonderful music writer of all time, as far as I'm concerned.
Mom watched my Dad sail away from Galveston for Germany for the reconstruction of the country after WWII and since we live in Houston, Mom just died at 91 and Dad cries everyday for her, this song chokes me up. They were together 70 years. Dad's time on Earth is limited.....I'm so proud to be the daughter of a great couple who are the last remnants of the Greatest Generation! Mom died Dec 28.....she was my best friend and I miss her but my pain is nothing compared to my Father's....he'll be 92 within the month. I love Glen Campbell!
Glenn Campell was a true artist and star. Wonderful singer, supreme guitarist, member of the Wrecking Crew who performed on countless hits for other artists and touring member of The Beach Boys. The man had it all.
True most people miss that point. The song was written durning the Viet Nam War, and the one line about his fear of dying had much more impact back then as opposed to present time.
@debbie matheson - That's mostly correct, but (probably) not the Viet Nam-specific part. I'm pasting a quote from Wikipedia below - take that for what it's worth :) - but it is consistent with many other sources that I've read from various places: In a Sound Observations interview, he [Jimmy Webb] claimed: “If there was a statement, and obviously I was saying something, I prefer to say it wasn’t anti-war - that it was more about an individual getting involved in a war and realizing that he’d rather be somewhere else.” He then went on to explain that it was not to be a “hit-you-over-the-head” protest song. As far the song being about Viet Nam, I remember reading somewhere - take THAT for what it's worth :) - that Mr. Webb didn't necessarily have a specific war in mind, since the song works for virtually any war, but that he was mostly visualizing the Spanish-American war at the time he wrote the song. Again, I could very well be wrong about that, since I can't remember or cite my source. Of course, being written and performed during the Viet Nam-era, the song fit the times perfectly.
Some people don't realize how outstanding he was as a musician and performer. Musicians always knew. He played with the best studio guys. A true natural.
Glen was my grandfather's favorite, John Denver is my personal favorite. I cherish my memories of playing his Glen Campbell records in the living room as a boy. Folk and western music is my way of reaching out to him. This music is timeless, sincere, and heartfelt.
Glen was viewed by top guitarists as THE MAN. Glen also had that unique voice. So many great songs. Wichita Lineman. He also appeared as the young hero in True Grit, where he put up with the young heroine and finally, dying, saved her life.
Galveston was a war protest song against the Vietnam war about a soldier who is separated from his first love. The scared lonely soldier puts down his gun as thoughts about his love becomes too crushing.
This was such powerful iconic song about the sixties and the Vietnam War. Thank you to the Veterans those who returned and those who never came home again peace to you all☆☆
It takes real talent to be a crossover artist who can top both the country and pop charts, good music is good music no matter which genre you try to box it into.
Glenn Campbell is was one of the greatest guitar players ever. He could shred a 12 string acoustic better than most metal players can an electric. Check out the liver versions of Wichita Lineman. some of his best work ever.
He even has the respect of the Rock and Roll legends. Alice Cooper in an interview said if God had given one man too much talent, that person would be Glen Campbell.
Brian Wilson intensely disliked touring, Glen was among those who filled in on the road so Brian could work with The Wrecking Crew on instrumental tracks then get the guys in the studio on their return to lay down their vocal tracks. The result was albums such as Pet Sounds, which in turn inspired Paul and John to take things to the next level with Sgt Pepper. Diamond cutting diamond
In the era of guitar heroes and virtuoso, Glen flew under the radar. He was an equal to any of them. Page, Clapton, Lifeson, Knopfler, Hendrix ... he could hold his own against any of them. He was the #1 session guitar player on the west coast in the 1960's. He was already a legend in the session scene before he ever cut a solo track. Even if he never went solo he'd have been wealthy, he was in that much demand! Heck he even doubled for Brian Wilson as a Beach Boy on tour. Towering talent.
That is true and none comes close the the King. They all know that, Elvis was the most beautiful yet tragic man that ever lived. He created his own genre, it's called Elvis Presley and what kind of idiot would try to match or copy that. Lol....yes theirs impersonators but it's not trying to compete, noone will ever be as great as Elvis. Love you uncle.
Don't mess with my boy Glen.. he not only could sing amazingly... he wrote and was one of the most amazing guitar players... he taught alot of the 80's guitar players... how to do it.
Let's give credit to the iconic song writer Jimmy Webb [ look, him up] who was paired up with Glen Campbell. Jimmy is and was a genius...He wrote Galveston, Wichita Lineman, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, the Fifth Dimension's Up Up and Away, Richard Harris' Macarthur Park, Are You Still Within the Sound of Voice, and many more.
Glen Campbell not only released many hit songs of his own, but he was an extraordinary musician and guitar player. Many people do not realize that Glen was a key member of the 'Wrecking Crew' that provided the instrumental backgrounds for hundreds of #1 hit songs by the most popular groups of the 60's and 70's. Anyway, please react to Glen's guitar playing of the William Tell Overture...just amazing guitar talent...ua-cam.com/video/GUBhE00h9U0/v-deo.html
Glen was THE guitar sessionist......his "mailbox money" was insane. He got paid from so many places he literally couldn't deposit the checks fast enough. He would just have LARGE stacks of checks just sitting around his house. His guitar work was awesome and he even played with the Beach Boys for a minute.
I envy you, not hearing this song until now, but you've missed out all of this time, too. I heard it the first time it was played on Los Angeles radio, and a thousand times since then.
I can sing and play at the same time but He Could SING AND PLAY when Eddie Van Halen was still new to the business he had made friends with Alice Cooper who was also friends with Glen Campbell. EVH asked for an introduction to Glen Campbell because he wanted lessons from Him. EVH wanted guitar lessons from Glen Campbell
Oh girl, this song was made in 1969 during the Vietnam War. I was a senior in high school then and knew EXACTLY what the hell he was singing about. I'm going to be 71 years old in August - yeah. But when I "play" this song in my mind I am forever that 17 year old girl worried about her boyfriend getting drafted and being sent to the slaughter house that was 'Nam.
How is it antiwar? Men miss the woman they love when they have to be away. Is "Radar Love" an antitrucking song? Is "Green Green Grass of Home" anti-prison? There's nothing anti-war in the lyrics.
I listen to you quite often and would love for you to play a song that was done in 1970 by a group from Miami. it is called Stoned Cowboy. @63M8. thank you and happy holidays
Does Javy know this is a vietnam era song about a couple in Galveston Texas. The girl waiting on a beach in Galveston Texas for her love fighting in vietnam
Here's a very good CBS 10 minute story on his last tour and how he dealt with his Alzheimer's diagnosis. ua-cam.com/video/nqRXOPJzgdY/v-deo.html RIP, Glen. We miss your grace.
Glen passed away 2 years ago, but his music lives forever. R.I.P. Mr. Campbell.

I also loved one of his very last songs, "Ghost on the Canvas".
"Wichita Lineman" OMG! Gets me every time. Jimmy Webb, who wrote some of Glen Campbell's greatest hits, was the most wonderful music writer of all time, as far as I'm concerned.
His first solo from the 50s turn around look at me is my personal favourite
The combination of Glen Campbell’s musical talent and the songwriting genius of Jim Webb is un-toppable.
Mom watched my Dad sail away from Galveston for Germany for the reconstruction of the country after WWII and since we live in Houston, Mom just died at 91 and Dad cries everyday for her, this song chokes me up. And Alice Cooper's golf buddy, lol!
@@BlackSmokeDMax Yes, Alice Cooper said Glen Campbell was the best non professional golfer he ever played against.
He also had his demons, but in the musical gifts department, he lacked nothing. A grade musician.

he's a soldier in viet nam dreaming about home.

He was a entertainment legend. He was also a kind human who loved to help others.
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
Always makes me tear up
Some people don't realize how outstanding he was as a musician and performer. Musicians always knew. He played with the best studio guys. A true natural.
One of the greatest guitar players ever, regardless of genre. RIP...

I have always loved his music, you should do "By the time I get to Phoenix" such an amazingly beautiful sad song....
OMGoddess - yes, another classic.
One of the greatest musicians ever, absolute monster on 6 and 12 string guitar
Galveston was a war protest song against the Vietnam war about a soldier who is separated from his first love. The scared lonely soldier puts down his gun as thoughts about his love becomes too crushing.
I hear zero protest. Don't make it something it isn't. All soldiers are scared of dying and miss home. That's all there was to it.
Nope. Jimmy Webb said that it was NOT a protest song, it was a song of loneliness, fear and prayer that the soldier would get home safely.
This was such powerful iconic song about the sixties and the Vietnam War. Thank you to the Veterans those who returned and those who never came home again peace to you all☆☆
Glenn had a TV show. Lot of clips on UA-cam. He also was a master guitarist. Look up him playing William Tell Overture
Heyy Jayy!!!! So nice to hear Glen today. I enjoyed hearing him and watching you. Take care... Peace.
A masterclass from the master...........
he's a rarity, super talent
He was so popular, they played him on pop stations and country stations. My favourites are Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy.
Don't forget Gentle On My Mind.

Nope. Glen was a session player before he was with the Beach Boys.
First I thought he was just a singer, but he was a fantastic guitarist. Played on a lot of other artists albums.
You're a thoughtful and great judge of special music and musicians.
If you enjoyed his guitar playing, try his version of the "William Tell Overture ". It was amazing.
Galveston is a seaside town in Texas. The part of the song that gets me, is his fear of dying--this was written during the Vietnam War.
Glen was thw greatest singer/musician of all time because he could entertain you all evening with his voice or his guitar. One of a kind.

There's nothing anti-war in the lyrics.
I think you missed the point of the song. He was representing a soldier off to Viet Nam (1969) thinking of home and his girl.
