China’s Junk Tanks Burst After 31 Shots: Exports Hundreds to Allies, Treats Them as Cannon Fodder

  • Several years ago, Bangladesh purchased several hundred 59G tanks from China, touted for their superior performance and affordability. In April this year, Bangladesh received a new batch of these tanks. On May 4th, during testing, one of the 59G tanks exploded while firing its 31st shell out of a planned 60, resulting in the death of the loader and severe injuries to the commander and gunner. The Bangladeshi military immediately suspended the use of this batch of tanks.

And if China "steals" plans, it means they were given. Like, China brags about how it stole the F-35 plans from a server sitting in a tent at an airshow in the US. Like...really? If they're telling the truth, were they too stupid to read the "This is a trap, lol" sign taped to it?

I worked with many engineers from China and the biggest problem that I had was that they could never admit to making a mistake! In the USA or Canada we just would acknowledge our error and get on with the job, happy in that found an error and we were putting out excellent work. A lot of engineers from China on the other hand, would bury any errors that they found that they had made. In some cases these were huge, very costly mistakes. But those engineers had quickly moved on to other companies, by the time the mistakes had been exposed. I always wondered how did these people manage to pass the State Professional Engineers Exam and get their license and stamp.

This is normal for chinas manufacturing. The company I work for made the mistake of buying a Chinese made piece of equipment. The equipment has very minimal sensors for material location tracking. What that means is the machine has no idea where the material is. If it’s not exactly where it’s supposed to be the machine doesn’t know it and it just keeps doing what it thinks it supposed to do. It will in fact destroy itself and anyone around it if something doesn’t go exactly as it’s designed to. The example given makes perfect sense if you understand how they do things. Any other manufacturer would install sensors to track the breach. If it does not close properly the tank won’t fire. China will just cut that corner and leave those sensors out to save money. This is what happens.

There has to be missing dot in that number. The damn shell aint that large on diameter, so i suspect it was 1.52mm that would make sense, since its large enough to blow hot high pressure gasses into fighting compartment and still be small enough not to notice visually, witch is why gun has to have mechanical mechanism preventing firing when breach is not closed. Well, it is a cheap Frankenstein tank. It's a T-54/55 with a Type 96 gun system. The original used 100mm fully assembled shells(like a regular gun cartridge), the new gun is a 125mm dual ammunition system(shell and bagged propellent) with a carousel loader like in a T-72 tank.
So how they managed to cram a T-72 gun and autoloader into a T-54/55 hull , has finally been answered. They did it poorly.
The buyer should have been at least a little wary of any performance claims from such a vehicle in the first place.

The report suggests the tank was to live fire 60 rounds. Typically, whole battalion (ca 18 tanks or Regiment 54 tanks) would fire 1-3 rounds each during a given exercise. The barrels wear off after a few hundred rounds, so excessive training is extremely expensive option.
Given Bangladesh military is purchasing T59G (not even VT4), which indicates lack of funding, it would be difficult to burn 60 rounds per tank at an exercise/ training.
