It’s also important to note that Mac fully intended on releasing Balloonerism but his label was the one that blocked the release for being “too out there.” Apparently over 200 physical copies were even in production before it was scrapped. It definitely should release. Mac would want it to see the light of day.

In Mac's case, I feel like it is ethical. Also, it's important to me that it doesn't feel like his family is exploiting him. Even the way they announced Circles & Balloonerism just felt respectful to his legacy which makes me happy because I love him so much. I agree about Prince...I was even like "WTF" when they put his music on Spotify.

They've also only released mostly finished albums. everything posthumous from Mac was his work. The way X and juice worlds label has treated their work is disgusting. The Frankenstein songs that are cut together using 15 second clips of X simply recording a melody singing gibberish are just wrong

Mac's family and estate are a textbook example of how to do posthumous albums right. Digging up unfinished/unreleased material, polishing it carefully, and rolling it out like the unearthed gem it is.
Ik some artists don't leave behind enough material for an entire album, (like DMX for example), but in that case, I think live albums are the next best thing. As long as this is something the artist themself would have actually wanted and you have their family's blessing, I'd say it's okay

It does feel wrong in some contexts and depending on the artist. But given the right motivation, it would make more sense and have a better impact on the industry.
Also I watched this for the first time not knowing what a posthumous album was and I didn’t even have to google it. Amazing video mate!

As a Mac fan. I’m so thankful that his work has transcended time
They released faces after death as well - he’d made id before good am
Like I said as a Mac fan I’m so thankful and grateful

It genuinely depends on the process. Most of the times it's an exploitative case of the estate grabbing any money it could. In Mac's case he had that album done and planned to have it released at some point. I genuinely have no complaints in the way that the Mac estate has handled his legacy. Their other albums, including the shaming of The true by Kevin Gilbert, which is one of my favorite of all time, that are released after the artist's death and sometimes it's not completed prior to that. That. In most instances, if the people surrounding the artists who had an understanding of what that artist's plans were, I don't have any issue with them completing what they can of the project

As a huge Prince fan I feel conflicted about his posthumous releases. I love being able to listen to new Prince music, but I know he had a reason why they weren’t released (whether it was his decision, bad timing, or whatever). I do feel like some of his posthumous releases are ethical bc they’re compilation and live albums, or B sides that didn’t make it on the album.
Idk how to feel about the Super Deluxe albums however.

I think it depends on the care put into the new releases and also what the artist believed before they passed. Also I think nirvana did have one song release after Kurt’s death, it was called “you know you’re right”. This song had already been completely written and recorded though in 1993, a year before his death.

      @raeganj6744 22 дні тому

Yeah, as far as I know, “You Know You’re Right” is the only posthumous Nirvana release, I’m pretty sure it was the last song they ever recorded, and it was added to the self-titled compilation album kind of as a greatest hits bonus track situation

Loved the video wow. 2:33 in my case regarding SOPHIE I immideately got that bittersweet feeling of knowing she had probably TBs of music in her files and I would commit arsony to hear 1% of it; but also feeling like if she wasn't the one personally moving that cursor and manipulating that soundwave to the absolute perfection, did we really were entitled to listen to them?
Then the album came out and I was in love immideatly. Hearing her absolute stamp on everything and realizing the love and care all the producing team took to not simply respect but celebrate the genius of SOPHIE... I mean I have no words.
NOW... I don't know how I'd feel about a "monetized" release of the rest. Like I said, there most be TBs of music that we might never listen to but then, without the genius who was working on them, are they really 'products'; should anyone profit from them, given that the artist never released them so they were no part of any record/distribution deal?
That same feeling I thing is very parallel (if not the same) of how I feel about Nirvana, whom you also talked about.
    Wonderful video, thanks

Well good news! Sophie’s brother said that this album is the last and only posthumous album we’ll get from Sophie since he’s almost sure she wouldn’t have liked it if her other work saw the light of day! Thank you so much for watching ❤️

With Mac Miller specifically, I think his family has done an amazing job honoring his legacy. Especially considering that they’ve strayed from using his official accounts (Instagram comes to mind), it feels like their way of processing his death, especially given how sudden and tragic it was. This also shows me they’re not trying to deceive his fans, either. The ones who care will find it.
Prince hated streaming services and had a long standing battle with ANYONE covering his songs - so many artists had their covers removed while he was alive, some that have been lost to the sands of time, he was so controlling in his public perception. Heck, even live videos from his concerts were largely always removed as well, unless it was released by him specifically. He was so meticulous in everything he did, so having him pass away suddenly and Warner Bros or whoever just uploads all his music to every streaming service days later (he only ever approved streaming access at Tidal at that time) just felt really wild. There haven’t been any publicly declared RIAA certifications made for his music in a very long time either - something I think was a choice of his, that seems to be still honored at this point. The man designed his MN house to be a museum when he passed away but didn’t have a will?? So wild. I have to imagine that his opinions would shift with streaming had he lived to see the impact it continues to have - but it’s hard to know. I benefit from it though, as I love listening to his classic works…
Juice Wrld has 3 posthumous albums and each one feels less baked than the one before it. There are more albums by Juice released AFTER his death than when he was alive, for reference. Just feels gross.
I see all angles of this stuff for sure, and as a musician myself, if I passed away and had songs left in my arsenal unreleased, there are enough people close to me that know full well which songs I would feel fine having released into the world and which songs were meant ONLY for me. Given how prolific Mac Miller was, and the great relationship he had with his family, I have to imagine it’s a similar feeling. Just speculating though. New subscriber here btw, great video!!

Posthumous albums to me feel like a mixture between a sneak peak (in intrusive ways) and a gold mine (because it’s something special that’s even more valuable now that it’s the final word). But something I can’t shake is questioning it’s authenticity. It’s like the difference between reading a biography and an autobiography…

I think if the work was not released at the time they were alive, it shouldn’t see the light of day. In Mac Miller’s case I agree with the decision to release it.
I just feel really cynical about estates milking artists often unfinished and scrapped snippets with constant post humous releases. They are often too FAR removed from the original artists intent its almost insulting to put their name on it.
Something like A Tribe Called Quests, We Got it from here is the best case scenario for these posthumous releases.

Just leave the dead alone. I feel like the 21st Century is all about resurrection and revival, spin offs , late sequels, repetitive documentaries, the 2000s hasn’t been about new content creation instead rehashing old themes . It’s overplayed. Leave the dead alone.

I think they're working in what mac millers best intentions were. If his label wanted to take his name or the tragedy of his family to profit the posthumous releases, there would be a lot more artificial work being released. It really seems like the family is careful and considerate with what mac miller cared about most, which would be his music helping someone out there. So if it meant completing circles, a project that he already recorded for and clearly had deep connections with, then his family would and should do exactly that along with releasing his work that never came out on streaming. of course, we'll never really know how it is behind the scenes but circles just felt right to all of his fans.
