I just saw these guys last night in Toronto - backing up Depeche Mode - ohmigosh - my husband who doesn’t know DM all that well declared well I hope they’re as good as this band!! They rocked the house! And were my favourite band of all time for the 30 minutes they were on. Stupendous performance 🎭 ❤

i met cole before a show in 2016, i was deep in my heroin addiction and i knew he was at the time too, and that is the is are hadn't been the triumphant successful recovery record people thought it was. he was the nicest, most down to earth dude ive ever met, and im super glad hes doing better now. this new song is one of his best ever.

I left a comment on the Instagram saying how this is a giant step in the right direction . There was constant criticism as to how the vocals were so lowered in the mix on the last two albums and rightly so. Everything about this is cleaner. Production wise , instrumental wise , and vocal wise. I can see them finally getting the respect they deserve if the whole album is like this! Rock on brothers !
Enjoyment of music is subjective. I loved Oshin and how the vocals were in line with the esoteric riffs. People kept asking for DIIV to change, but I liked them as they were.
Finally, after again 3,5 years of waiting, luckily the quality always outmatches the waiting game with diiv.

You know I’ve been reading the comments, and I think if it’s one thing people aren’t going to like is that this is actually accessible . Anyone who isn’t feeling it was just expecting the same old muddy production techniques for whatever reason. Bands have to grow , or become stale. Fuck the bullshit, this is good
Exactly, I completely agree with you!
Oshin was recorded and released 7 years ago when he was still in Beach Fossils and didn't really have any experience of fronting a band. The line up has changed a few times since DIIV's inception and the other members have become more involved in the process.
When you get older, you see more and experience different things - all the turmoil that has happened within this band over the years has fed into their music. Inevitably influences change (there's a Neil Young interview somewhere on UA-cam where he sums up why artist's music - aesthetics and approaches change perfectly).
I love Oshin lots and it was/is an important album for me personally, as was seeing DIIV play in the UK four years ago and showcasing new songs that would end up on Is the Is are. As you said in your other comment, the production is cleaner and clearer, Cole's vocals (and Colin's awesome backing vocals) are not hiding behind reverb anymore, the lyrics have more importance and purpose within the framework of the song, and you can hear how Cole actually sings more. Ok that's probably enough
I’ve been in bands before too and it’s always more productive to use everybody’s strengths. I always wondered what was up with the cloudy vocals , and after oshin got so much flack for it I was sure they would be better on is the is. But was disappointed. Is the is are started really strong but IMO fell off about six tracks in. I assumed cole Smith was very insecure about his voice or something? I wondered why because his voice isn’t terrible. He’s not an amazing vocalist but at the same time his style of music doesn’t require him to be. Plenty of indie bands have average singers and sound great. I also wondered why they never used Colin on backgrounds as well, as he actually has a better voice in certain aspects . It finally sounds like they are using their full potential.
