- Madden NFL 23 reviewed on Xbox Series X by Kat Bailey. Also available on PlayStation 5. Note: the Xbox One, PS4, and PC versions are significantly different with fewer new features; this review does not apply to those versions.
Madden fans will tell you that it hasn’t been a great decade for EA’s football sim. Like the NFL itself, the profits have continued to grow, but the product has suffered. Madden NFL 23, though, provides a glimpse of a light at the end of the tunnel with a handful of smart enhancements to animations, AI, and passing mechanics that make subtle but meaningful improvements to the moment-to-moment football on the field. To be clear, Madden still has a long way to go to catch up with other sports sims, the majority of which are more refined, less buggy, and have a clearer identity. After playing Madden NFL 23, though, I finally have a little optimism that it’s on the right path - maybe not an emphatic “Boom!”, but clear forward progress for a series that so desperately needs it.

Hell, Madden can't even compete with its own company's games. NCAA Football 14's presentation puts Madden 23's presentation to shame.

Why capitalism is so great. It prevents this from happening. NFL allowed a monopoly from licensing agreements. This game doesn’t just reflect on EA, but it reflects on the NFL too.

We need the depth and presentation of 2K5 with the sweet gameplay of APF 2K8 with current rosters and stadiums. That be my NFL perfection of a game
Lets also remember nfl2k5 cost like $20 on release back in the day. 20! And you get sooo much with that price. Meanwhile this game cost you $70 and its so much less in terms of everything other than probably graphics. What a joke.
When we think of NFL 2k we remember the halftime show with highlights from your game and around the league, the sideline interviews. The ability to have your players do pilates or run drills in your franchise mode. The pre-game tailgating, cheerleaders, real crowd reactions, REAL WEATHER Effects . … so it’s amazing that in 2023 Madden hasn’t come close to this none of this, but are still fixing tackling and throwing mechanics. And can’t give us a decent career mode, do anyone remember “the crib” in 2k! …If it comes to Xbox and PSN games pass I’ll play it. But again EA you won’t be getting my $70 this year.
this is why competition is important -- nvidia vs amd.... xbox vs playstation... iphone vs samsung... etc. without competition we get a product like madden that doesn't really change from year to year bec why would they try? this is the only nfl game in town so many ppl will still buy this regardless of the quality. interns probably made this game to make it as cheap as possible.
I'll play it on game pass in January 🤣

In their mind, Alien Isolation was 5.9 and Madden 23 is 7.0, where one is one of the greatest, most meticulously designed horror games of all time and the other is a buggy mess that offers nearly nothing new over the last 3 games.

IGN’s review of EA and Madden 23, does not match a 7/10. Reviewers weren’t generous with their ratings on CyberPunk. Madden is protected by smoke and mirrors every year. It’s pathetic.

You're wrong and here's why. Espn 2K5 was nice, dirt cheap on release and would only get better each year. Plus a competitor in the market would force EA to step their game up.

I'm tired of hearing about how EA "has more work to do". They have had the exclusive license for almost 20 years. The only way this gets better is if there is competition.

Kat Bailey is helping mess up any chance of us getting a better game with this review. You can't just brush off bugs that casually, and saying that they are on the right track is foolish when they have been doing this song and dance for years now.

It's always going "back to it's roots" and not actually introducing new creative additions to actually convince me that it's a full price game. Everything "new" is things that have been taken out and put back in like it never existed before the current game.
You could have a game saving interception in the endzone during the Super Bowl that gives the patriots the win (remember that moment and how crazy it was?) and the crowd and commentators would be more bland and boring than watching paint dry
Winning a Superbowl in Madden gets less presentation than opening a pack of digital cards

The crowd reaction reminds me of the crowds during the first year of the pandemic! Still no refs on the field, sidelines look pathetic, there’s nothing that resembles football simulation. EA should look at All Pro Football 2K8 for real football simulation!

Normally Madden reviews drop days before release this came out the day off very rare.
Almost as if EA had more to hide this time around.
What competitors? There are none thanks to EA’s exclusive license with the NFL. But Madden 23 is better all around than in years even on old gen systems, which is important since finding a next gen console is still like hunting for a unicorn.

Why does it feel like every year with madden it’s a step in the right direction, when is EA going to step up its games to the level of other sports developers!
EA needs to draw up a code to where each player personality plays a major role who you draft, trade for, or pick up in free agency.
Depending on whether they are a team player (.Tom Brady) selfish (Antonia brown) distraction (antonio brown again)
And it can effects if players hold out for contracts, disrupts/builds team chemistry, etc etc. that can be a dynamic game changer that adds depth to future games and changes how to piece together your rosters
