A Cameroonian here from Germany, very proud of Ngannou rep us and also props to Piers for giving him this huge platform to allow him to tell his story to the world
He broke into Europe seven times before the French government finally gave him a sympathy visa. He also never paid his first gym and complained about the UFC paying him over $10 million to fight Jones. What a hero...
Love you brought him on, Piers. Some positivity in these dark times is doing good. We need those stories, too so we can continue believing in humanity. ❤
What an amazing human Francis is. From working in the sand mines in Cameroon aged just 10, to the UFC, to heavyweight Champ within the UFC. Knew his worth, so walked away from the UFC, and made more from 1 fight, than he did his entire career in the UFC. Recently lost his son, but continues to fight on. Respect to you, Francis. As an mma fan when I tell you that Francis couldn’t speak a word of English a few years ago, I’m not exaggerating. This guy literally learned an entire new language to progress himself in UFC and career in less than 5 years. Speaks to his mindset and resilience. There are athletes who are in the UFC for 10 years and can’t make a single English sentence. Francis is a different breed of human. His determination is inspiring.
Very true statement, this man couldn’t say a word of English 5 years ago and now here he sits with a famous British commentator and explains his life clearly.
Yup. Jose Aldo, Alex Pereira, Anderson Silva etc. It just feels to me that they don’t respect the fans enough to learn to speak English to better communicate with them.
Loooooooooooooool literally what I was about to comment then found this. Of course it would be comical to immediately see Piers take on an Israel topic, in knowledge that we ALL know he is a little puppet boy - been given bullet points to stick by and mentored to deal with a narrative. Lol. In the meantime they are devising a plan and giving him a new script. He will be back with a Shakespearean monologue - claim that his views are his own and remind everyone that he stood up for Iraq. It will have all been written for him and he will be rehearsing it this week like a well behaved kiddo.
You can just tell by the way this man speaks and how he perceives life how much he sacrificed and what a hard journey he had. Top role model and a real peoples champion, I hope to meet him one day

I love this guy. I never fanboy over anyone, but I remember Francis from his first days in the UFC not speaking a word of English and looking scary. In a short time he gets the belt and learns English to fluency, and shows the world what an intelligent, thoughtful and kind man he is. Nothing but respect.
Thank you Piers. Other than being a co-Arsenal supporter, I never enjoyed the way you treat people who agree to come on to your show. But today, you melted my heart with the way you conducted this interview with respect and empathy, showing genuine interest in listening to what Ngannou had to say. Hats off to you.

What I like about Francis Ngannou, is he seems to leave his ego in the ring.
very unique in the fighting world.
No, that's not remotely unique, there are lots of MMA fights and boxers who are humble, Stipe and Usyk are two obvious examples.
It's not "unique." Francis is a puncher. He can't grapple. This is common.
