    Holy crap! Part of the thing that attracted me to the Logitech Blue Sona, aside from its visual design, was the fact that the +24 db ClearAmp tech put into it allowed the microphone to be plugged into any interface for clear sound without needing to worry about it being too quiet--but, the biggest drawback is that you can _only_ use it with Phantom Power.
    This SM7 revision is HUGE for allowing you to bypass the built-in booster and just use the mic as-is.

    About time. The RE20 though more a strictly radio/broadcast microphone than a versatile one like this is around the same price never had the gain issues.
    Also that phantom power advisory goes double if you use ribbons. Which usually shred over any voltage, though there's some active ones.

    Have you had much use of the MVX2U converter they sell too? Is it worthwhile or is it better to keep investing in a more robust XLR interface instead? They're bundling the products together and given I'd be going from the USB Elagto Wave 3 I don't have an XLR setup currently so if I could just bundle compactly with no impact to the end product seems a no brainer?

    even though im not in the market for a new mic, i love watching videos about microphones they are still fun to me and i think a reason i haven't got a new mic is that people always complement my mic "sounding really good" despite the fact i didn't pay for it as it was a gift from my mum 5 years ago maybe is proof that the Rode NT1-A is actually a good mic despite a lot of pros preferring the NT1.

    Hey, I was just wondering, how do you have practically no hiss in your recording? Is this a feature that comes with the SM7dB, did you remove the hiss yourself, or is it something else? The hiss is something that I can seem to fix in my recordings and it's really starting to get on my nerves😭

    At 4:05, you mentioned making sure to turn off phantom power and wait a bit before unplugging/plugging in a microphone. The motherboard I have (Gigabyte B650 Aorus Pro Ax) has an issue with USB devices being plugged in but acting like they got unplugged briefly from time to time. I am *brand new* to decent quality mics, so forgive me if this is an idiotic question, but would this be cause for concern in a similar way? The whole audio interface would basically get "unplugged", not just the mic. It'd be a bit of a hassle considering it's a pretty new build but I could replace my motherboard if that's the only way forward without destroying a $400+ mic.

    So, TL;DR - if I have an SM7b and use a preamp/processor (Dbx 286s), the SM7dB in bypass mode used with the same Dbx 286s would essentially be no different than my current setup? Just trying to figure out if there is a reason to upgrade.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  10 місяців тому +3

      If you leave it in bypass mode, correct. But you would be able to turn on the 286s phantom power with the +18/24dB mode and get a lot cleaner gain than the noisy gain the 286s provides.

    There is no need for an usb version. Since shure just released an inline xlr interface, which turns xlr mics into usb mics and provides the shure software we know from the mv7. • @mallard.
      @mallard. 10 місяців тому +2

      depends on what matters to you. if the simplicity/desk space saved due to not needing a cloudlifter and having easier switches on the rear is appealing to you, then this mic was made with people like you in mind. if i was in your situation, id probably go for the sm7b+cloudlifter just because i prefer the lack of branding on the sm7b while saving a bit of cash, but that's just me. at the end of the day, they're both great mics and im sure you'll be happy with whatever you decide.

      Just get the normal 7B. What preamp or interface will be using it with? Most preamps will reach their peak signal to noise ratio at +45 dB and USB interfaces typically have much lower clipping thresholds (limited to 5 volts of power or no more than +15dBu) than outboard pres so you actually need as much gain to bring a signal to alignment levels. Digital make up will sort out the rest.

You can't beat the clean matte black, and that odd green color they're using for the branding now is certainly uglier than the black/white packaging and branding of old. It's a fantastic upgrade for people that want an all-in-one mic and don't want to deal with an inline preamp, but I think the external redesign is a miss. Wtf, the SM7 is 50 years old???!!! wow

  • @Slipsch
    @Slipsch 9 місяців тому

    This mic is a clear discrepancy of what consumer actually want vs what brands wants and what brands thought consumers want:
    1) Brand thought with so many podcast using the SM7B, if they add the Shure logo, it will be free advertising for them. The only reason I'm not buying 6 of the SM7dB and bought 6 Lauten Audio LS-208 is purely because of the logo that Shure added. If I don't use it hang down, the logo will be upside down unless I open the screw and rotate it and screw it back.
    2) They beauty of the SM7B is how subtle it was, the black plate makes it look so clean, now they no longer gives you the back plate
    3) It's nice that they make the switch easier to access, but what's the point if no one even uses the switches in the first place?
    4) Build in Pre-amp 5 years too late, now entry level audio interfaces already have 69 db of gain like the latest generation Scarlett, 76 db of gain with the Rodecaster pro II/duo, 80 db of gain with mackie DLZ creator. How about studios? People will studio already have preamp like the 1073 which already have more than enough gain to power the SM7B.
    5) The mic color (shiny) and proportion just looks wrong and camera, the elongated design with the taper, just make the mic looks weird, the original SM7B already look perfect, why mess with that?
    6)Here's what people actually want, we want the next generation of SM7B
    -Better sound so we can upgrade our current SM7B to the next generation SM7C. Maybe neodymium magnet? Improved capsule? Better internals?
    -The wire coming out from the side, we want it to be internal so it will look cleaner on camera
    -Better yok mount so it's easier to screw
    -Built in wire mesh pop filter inside the cage for the capsule, perhaps something like the JZ-PF pop filter
    -We want the rest to be the same, because of the MAYA effect - Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable - To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.

      How would you go about that? Unlike a normal mic with the port on the back and the cable jutting out all awkwardly where people hit it literally *all the time*, this gets completely out of the way and you’d have to intentionally try to yank at it to ever strain.
      It’s one of those things people get weird about thinking it’s a vulnerability when it actually gives the mic more durability than most

      @@EposVox I didn't mean to suggest that repairability is a dealbreaker, but that it feels like buying a keyboard with a permanent cable in 2023. Sure, if you wanted to mod and paint it, you could disassemble it and solder your own. But, I would've appreciated even a proprietary small profile connector to skip all that.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  10 місяців тому

      Okay except with the keyboard metaphor, you are using that cable to plug it into your computer and are stuck with all the inconveniences of the static length, type, etc.
      This isn’t the same kind of cable, you still have the port on the mic. They just moved it slightly away from the body to be more convenient.
