    Friday the 13th, Predator, Puppet Master, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and bloody Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Alongside Dead by Daylight, the saturation of asymmetrical multiplayer based on horror icons is boring the heck out of me.

      That was summed up accurately and succinctly. As someone who actually took debate in school, most people who yell out, "Debate me, bro!" are people who never did or totally failed that class.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich Місяць тому +6

      @@Craxin01 I never took debate as a class. But I have to ask someone who did. What *is* the solution to when people just strawman you? Like, I've noticed that the *default* argument strategy people use is to deliberately (at least I really hope its deliberate) misinterpret whatever you say in the worst way possible, or just make massive assumptions about who you are from what you said and then argue against their misinterpretation instead of argue against you.
      And I have never been able to find a counter to this. Its a blatant strawman, but it isn't what people think of when they hear the term "strawman", so you can't call it out. You can't refute what they've said because if what they said is wrong, your argument against it legitimises their strawmanning of you, making you look bad, and if what they said isn't wrong then you look like the bad guy for arguing against it.
      The only thing I can think of is that, if what they said isn't wrong, you can agree with them and then try and gently nudge them back to what you actually said, but more often than not, they're both strawmanning you *and* making bad arguments so agreeing with them to try and get them on track would mean agreeing with a wrong argument.
      Given most people haven't taken debate class, you can't just point out what they're doing, because they don't even realise they're doing it. And nobody is willing to call out strawmanning when its from their own "team", so to speak. I got no idea how to counter it and what I hate even more is that I catch myself doing it too. Thats how widespread it is.

    Friday the 13th being lost due to a licensing issue was a tragedy, but even the Texas Chainsaw game by the same devs hasnt been able to fill that void. This is the same issue that live service games have. Their can only be so many at a time that can suceed since they require a ton of players to be on them constantly. DBD is still around because it was successful from the start and only added on since. We could use more Alien Isolation type games where you're being hunted by the killer.

    • @rainbowkrampus
      @rainbowkrampus Місяць тому +10

      @@massivepileup Yeah, like, conceptually I get the difficulty. Xenomorphs, cool as they are, are kinda one note. Hide in vents and stalk you from the shadows before hitting you with the surprise kill.
      Something like Jason though? Especially as the franchise continued and got increasingly absurd in the elaborate death sequences department? It's a not an easy task to make something like that feel organic in the highly dynamic world of a video game.
      Personally, that's an indicator to me that you probably just shouldn't make a game revolving around complex and highly cinematic sequences like that.
      Forcing Jason into Dead By Daylight or whatever is probably not doing the character any justice but it's at least divorced enough from its context that you can kinda overlook the fact that the player controlling him is making him spin in place like a top.

    Just gonna bring this up for further context... the Puppet Master game started out as a fan game that just ended up getting the rights to the franchise down the road.
    Killer Klowns WAS meant to get a sequel that was started/stopped multiple times before Disney fully cancelled it and the game pitch was the only way to do anything with the franchise (imo a comic adaptation of the scrapped sequel(s) would've been a better route to go in.)
    A good chunk of these were pitched with the "more optimistic" view that going for a wider audience appeal (with online multiplayer games) could help jumpstart a franchise revival. But due to a lot of these starting development around the same time (and games taking a lot longer/cost more to make)... it has caused a lot of oversaturation and due to mismanagement (like what happened with Evil Dead + Friday the 13th) they end up usually not lasting very long.

    • @natebookout1353
      @natebookout1353 Місяць тому +12

      The problem is coming up with a pitch that says "let's make something like x game based on y movie." Not just for asymmetrical horror, this has been a problem for all gaming history anytime a genre becomes popular. How many shitty licensed character action games from the 2000's are there?
      You can't just copy the mechanics of a game and expect to be able to reproduce it perfectly. Just like how you can't just copy a script and expect to be able to make the same film. Like how film-making involves the coordination between many actors, writers, camera-men, and the director, game design requires coordinating the art, writing, and game systems to make a coherent whole.
      Game mechanics are tools with functions. Every tool you choose to use affects the experience of playing the game. Deliberately choosing the right mechanics for a particular game's world is what leads to innovative game design, bringing disparate game systems together to make a unique experience. When you just replicate an exact copy of a game with a new coat of paint, what you make ends up feeling empty in comparison to the original, because the game mechanics feel completely disconnected from the world.

    • @honoramongscars649
      @honoramongscars649 Місяць тому +3

      @@natebookout1353 That's completely fair and at the very least there does seem to be at least an attempt at a shift away from this being the "only" option for Horror IPs (mainly due to them failing.) Just look at Alien; besides the horde shooter we also got a top down RTS survival game, a weird fnaf clone, and apparently an upcoming horror survival game once more.
      ANDDDDDDD then there's the upcoming Friday the 13th game that seems like it might end up going down the "Until Dawn" route/formula.

      Asynchronous games are a different thing; games where players observe the action at different times. The classic example is chess by mail. Laser Squad Nemesis is one such computer game.
      The term here was asymmetric multiplayer games, where players have different rules. A typical example is Among Us.
      The issue is with shovelware. Multiplayer only is used as a shortcut to never develop things like story or AI, and franchise licensing is used not just for the buck but to skip story, character and world design.
      It's perfectly possible to have a game be fun with almost nothing in it. Hundreds of perfectly equivalent reskins is tiring at best.

    With respect to Dead by Daylight and NFTs: that wasn't Dead by Daylight's choice. That was the Hellraiser license holders who sprung it on them after the fact, and the deal was basically "we use your Pinhead model for our NFT or we sue you" in a classic case of "we have altered the deal pray we do not alter it further." The community got rightfully mad and the Hellraiser NFT project thankfully died but I do think it's important to recognize who's at fault. It's not Behaviour Interactive: it's entirely on the Hellraiser license holders.

    Afaik, the thing with NFTs for Dead by Daylight is that the license holder contractually obligated the devs to have the models for Pinhead NFTs made for an entirely separate entity , NFTs otherwise were in no way integrated into the game.
    Granted, it's still bloody expensive if you want to buy all of your favourite characters and all the cosmetics for them. "But you don't have to!" It's true the game can be expensive to get into but even that is being remedied as we speak. They've been bundling up the non-licensed characters into bundles at a much low price and have slashed the prices for the characters in these bundles in half in case you want to buy them with in-game currency with you can earn for free. This can't ever apply to the licensed characters though sadly which you'll always have to buy at the same price.

Playing as the killer means that you need a bunch of CPU humans to kill and some kind of failure state. Unless they can kill you back and are strong enough to do so if you're not careful (which ruins the slasher feel), they would either need to escape you somehow or just hide for long enough for the police to arrive. That kind of gameplay just lends itself to asymmetrical multiplayer games, which is why there's a shitload of them.
      The only way I can see that kind of game working as single player is if it's like Hitman and you're a serial killer trying to murder people without getting caught and shot by the police.

    Puppet Master game pitch: Arkane makes it, it’s a stealth slasher where you control Toulon and his various puppets while they wreak a bloody trail of revenge on the Nazi regime.
    Toulon himself would be rather fragile and incapable of combat, but he could deploy his puppets as scouts or guards while he controls one of them directly. They would each have different abilities that could grow stronger and more effective as the game goes on, and Toulon would have his own skill tree which enables assists and team up attacks for the puppets like, at their most basic, having the burly one hold a guard temporarily while you kill his buddy.
    Arkane knows how to make interesting power sets and impeccable levels and all the vents and chandeliers and low tables they love putting in their environments would be perfect ambush spots for the miniature murder-dolls.
    I would play the fuck outta this game. I would also love to see Arkane’s take on Nazi architecture and art. It sounds weird to say but they’re really good at making architecture in their games that convey the political and social themes of the environmental context. It’s a very specific type of art design. Like, you really *feel* Dunwall’s disdain for the poor as you move through it.

    Almost everything about this video can be applied to superhero movies

    Hooray, you're not dead! And you got a puppet!
    Edit: Here's an idea for free. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes as a Left For Dead-style FPS.

    I might have missed it if you did do one, but im surprised you haven't done an episode talking about the oversaturation of crossover media

    I loved puppet Master a kid. Me and my brothers would rent tbem from a little shitty rental place in this small town we grew up in. I still remember the smell of the place.

    I think the answer to why is pretty simple, and you mentioned it before, how it would be cool to play a single player game where you're being hunted by Nemesis, but games that try to evoke that same dread as Alien: Isolation, an actually terrifying game that I can't beat that still utilizes a pre-existing IP, those kinds of games take an initial investment that studios and publishers aren't willing to make, not when it's so much easier to make your players do all the work for you. Giving players characters on both sides means they don't have to write AI for the killer or the survivors. No one had to bug test their behaviors, because all of that is player-side.

    Glad your ok, ouch!
    It makes me sad that we didn't get actually decent games for Killer Klowns or Puppet-Master those could have so much potential! Although now I also want someone to make a really decent game version of Reanimator...

    I wasn't aware that anyone else knew Singularity existed. It's underrated as a whole.
    Also, the Bruce Lee gags are my new favorite thing. A "Poor Lee" was missed at 8:05 though

    the genre has a dedicated playerbase - it may not be you, but I fucking love every single one of those titles.
