I'd definitely recommend getting on a road bike not just for competitive racing but it's got something over MTB offroading,the higher speeds the much longer distances that can be covered,a damm hard sport but very rewarding once the fitness levels are there..
Road is the best forget gravel. Once your fitness levels are up on the road you can go long distances.
