- Welcome to another episode of Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick. We first want to thank everyone for watching and sharing the first episode and we're proud to share this next one with you all. Today we examine the hardest actions to guard in the NBA and the best ways to defend against these actions. The two main actions we focus on are the Golden State Warriors post splits and the way Draymond Green acts as a hub for Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and the rest of the roster made that play nearly impossible to defend against. The other play we talk in detail about is the inverted pick-and-roll with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets. There are several examples of duos that make that play hard but we take an extra close look at what Jokic does that makes this play so unstoppable. We also dive into other schemes like ghost-screens with a great big shooter like Kristaps Porzingis of the Boston Celtics and how Boston gets creative on offense. A few other topics we discuss are why teams blitz Luka Doncic of The Dallas Mavericks, the lack of creativity in men's college basketball and the mileage LeBron has put on his body in 2024. I would like to propose an edit to future episodes. rather than explaining all of the actions and terms at the beginning...use the same footage and when the first time they are brought up in the episode cut to JJ giving a quick explanation then cut back to the pod. Little more editing work but it would make everything flow super smooth and not make it to where i have to remember everything as a prerequisite to the pod. Loving these conversations though! Keep them coming!

Podcasts have been offering this for a decade now. This is just a continuation of a trend that's already been going on.
I know Bron is Bron, we all do. But JJ is sort of ridiculous. 15 Year NBA Career as a starter, one of the top snipers of all time, illustrious college career, multiple years broadcasting his own brand and actual NBA games and shows. He’s an absolute titan in the basketball world in his own unique way.

Here's the list of the terms they used throughout the episode:
TILT. A double from the baseline.
FIRE. A double from the nail (center of the free throw line).
HEDGE. A defensive tactic that involves the screener’s defender momentarily stepping out to defend the ball-handler in an attempt to slow them down and prevent penetration.
BLITZ. Double-team of the ball handler on the screen.
GHOST SCREEN / BLUFF SCREEN. When a player jogs toward the ball handler like he is preparing to set a ball screen, but at the last second sprints to open space.
TAG. An aspect of a pick-and-roll defense in which the closest help defender (for whom the ball-screen is moving away) briefly touches the roller before sprinting back out to his original man.
TWO-NINE. The number of seconds (2.9) a defender can occupy the paint without being an arm’s length away from an offensive player.
VAREJAO SCREEN. To flip a ball screen (changing the angle) at the last moment before contact.
BLIND PIG. A three-person backdoor action in which the ball-handler passes to a big, who passes to a guard running by him toward the hoop.
POST SPLITS. This action is triggered by the ball being entered into the low post. The player who makes the entry pass will immediately screen away for the next closest player. These two players then “split” apart from each other off this action.
PICK THE PICKER B.O.B. (AKA AMERICA’S PLAY). A baseline out-of-bounds play where one player cuts to an area of the court to set a screen for a secondary player. After that, the initial screener seeks to get an open shot via an additional screen.
INVERTED PICK-AND-ROLL. Like a traditional pick-and-roll but the roles flip where a guard or wing sets a screen for a big.
DHO (DRIBBLE HAND OFF). An offensive tactic that involves one player literally handing the basketball off to a teammate.
UPHILL DHO. Another term is grenade. It’s when a player has the ball on the block and he dribbles back towards the wing or slot on the same side to hand off to a teammate.
CHICAGO CUT. A post feed followed by a basket cut made by the player who passed the ball into the post that turns into a down screen for a big at the weak side low block.
PINCH POST. An offensive series in which a big near the weakside elbow is used as a playmaking hub (while no other teammates are between him and the closest sideline).
ATO. After timeout plays.

This is much better than watching something like ESPN. You actually LEARN about the game and not learn about drama that doesn't matter. I will be watching as many of these as I can. Good stuff.
Many great free shows to watch nowadays, this is one of the best. I will go out of my way to recommend everyone to never watch ESPN, it has everything that is bad with American sports coverage nowadays.
JJ said it’s not the job of the nba players to educate the public about the game. And then makes the most educational nba podcast/show in history with the best player since MJ. Bravo.

i just got into the nba like 2 years ago but i'm a huge nerd so i feel you on some level, but continuing to watch this pod and learn is probably gonna be one of the best ways to learn more about the nitty gritty of nba actions.

I believe a general increase in the ability to shoot has caused a spacing of the floor which in turn creates more opportunities. I’m sure the league has encouraged a move away from football. While the floor being spaced the way it is makes it harder to play defense, it makes no sense that defense would be disincentivized as it could be the ticket to a small market team like Golden State once was becoming a few billion dollars richer. Simply put not playing defense is to no one’s benefit.

This isn't anything new or revolutionary. The reason sports media is covered the way it is, is because their metrics have shown & proven that the general viewer/casual fans, like that shit. It's why shows like First Take have lasted so long. Explaining Xs and Os' is a niche thing, catered to hardcore fans. There are/have been a few podcasts that scratch that itch already-hell, JJ brought in the Dunker's Pod to specifically cover this area, albeit they focus more on the numbers. The main difference that this pod has over its competitors, is that they have one of/if not the GOAT, still active, breaking down plays/actions through his lens. Big fan of media JJ, but lets be real, the praise it has rightfully earned, wouldn't be as exaggerated if his co-host wasn't Bron.
How the fuck are a bunch of regular joes with zero professional Basketball experience going to match a podcast with two guys who have played at the professional level? J.J was an elite knock down shooter and Lebron is in the GOAT conversation. There is no way that regular ass desk journalists can match the depth of conversation in this podcast. It’s impossible, This podcast is literally like watching A Unicorn in nature, it can’t really be replicated.
I love that they describe the plays so perfectly and then show examples. Hearing JJ describe the blind pig, then seeing how it's ran properly and effectively gave me a new found love and respect for the intricacies and technicality that the game takes.

I absolutely love this show. I started playing ball at 10yo, I am now 53. As a lifelong fan of the game, this is all incredibly refreshing. Basketball is not all about dunks, highlights and drama. Basketball is a thinking man's game.
I still can't believe this content is out there, just like that.

I could’ve listened to this nonstop for 2 hours. The podcast game is getting so saturated I can’t sit through a 1 hour podcast that just talks about narratives and hot takes. This was a legit basketball discussion that explains a lot about modern NBA concepts.
I mean it’s no different than all the radio shows when radio was big. You just listen to what interests you. I kicked shows like Undisputed and First Take to the curb long ago. I love both of Shannon Sharpe’s shows, Bill Simmons and other player shows. Just because the show is there doesn’t mean you have to watch it.

Ive watched basketball forever. Never knew the technical stuff. This is such a beautiful platform for people like me that doesn't understand the details of the game.
loved the pod, but one thing - I think when JJ is explaining all the terms at the start, it would be very helpful to show a clip that demonstrates the concept, as someone who isnt the most technically sound basketball watcher, it would be a lot more helpful to view the play than try and imagine it in my head.

This is so good. I appreciate the section in the beginning breaking down concepts and terms. It lets the conversation flow more naturally without needing to stop and explain things to us
I think this just shows how important for a team to have a player who is able to shoot after running, cause most of the actions they say need a shooter (split action, ghost screen, invert P&R, chase, etc). With a shooter, the options just increase a lot, and the defender is almost impossible to defend. So shout out to those great shooters in the league, and also those coaches who make them valuable in every action!

@@Mellowyellow8888 A lot do. I mean the specific terminology might be different -- but as JJ notes even in the NBA people use different names for the same thing -- but for anyone who listens to the Dunker Spot or Thinking Basketball none of these concepts are new.
Unfortunately, based on the comments section, I don't think this is bridging the gap as much as we'd all hope. I've already seen people where the entire conversation went right over their head.
I fully expect to see people in JJ's comments in a month arguing that Doc Rivers didn't make any adjustments even though Milwaukee cycled through five coverages, ran 12 different PnR and changed their rotation.
But the more content like this the better.
Fans who don't play don't need to know the precise X's and O's, but it's nice to get some exposure to it. You can see what's happening and understand the patterns without naming them. Players need to know it because it's their language to each other. Just like you don't need to be able to read music to appreciate it when you hear it. You hear what's happening but don't need to communicate it to other musicians.
@sup9542 I've known people that don't really like sports or basketball but I've told them how teams make adjustments like this to counter teams and they were impressed what goes into basketball. It's cool to know from a players prospective and why they ran a certain play or why they made an adjustment

Yeah, this podcast is great. I hope some day they up the production and make it more frequent or maybe do some new type of segments with similar styles. This podcast has so much potential to help grow basketball analysis and basketball discourse.

Mann, this pod is addictive. And so refreshing to hear from savant without any yelling/screaming explaining the concepts of real basketball. If you really love the game of basketball there’s no pod/tv channel that does the justice to the game of basketball as this show does.

When JJ explains the concepts in the beginning, it would have been much easier to understand what JJ is saying if you guys also showed actual footage of NBA players in action. Enjoying your contents so much. Can't wait for the next one
Totally agree, would love JJ to include examples for BOB or like he later showed the 1-2 Rub with Ben. Also loved the seeing the WNBA representation when him and Bron were discussing counters against JJ's/the 2 guard setting screens.

Have in mind that all that footage is copyrighted. I mean they show some clips, but it is there just for a few seconds for a reason, you can't flat out show these copyrighted clips, it instantly gets flagged. I had FIBA videos, and if I use unaltered FIBA footage, youtube bot instantly catches it, and in best case scenario demonetize the video, or just flat out refuses to upload. Watching LeBron on the sidelines versus the Bucks was truly something spectacular. He was coaching his teammates, specifically Rui on positioning, he was getting excited and congratulating guys when they made a good shot or play, and he was even counting down Giannis' ten-second free throws at the end of the game. The man loves the game of basketball at a level I've never seen before which is insane because most guys of his elite athletic caliber are coasting or retired at this stage of their careers. How many of us have that level of passion for our jobs after 20 years?

I’m a huge Bron fan and I’ve always been a fan of JJs game but I’ve gained a whole new respect for him as a player since his retirement just by watching him exhibit his extensive basketball knowledge on tv and on the Old Man and the Three. But this is just phenomenal! Watching 2 extraordinary basketball minds talk basketball from an Xs and Os perspective adds so much depth to my experience as a fan. Watching the game becomes more exciting and digestible just by knowing and understanding the intricacies of every play just a little bit better. Like when Kobe was doing Detail 💪🏽 RIP MAMBA 🕊️ I’ve been listening to this episode on repeat since it dropped 🙌🏽 I’d say I’ve listened to it about 17 times already 😂 I need the next episode NOW!! @@kindalost1 I imagine most foreign leagues uses same or similar terms. So, if you played relatively high level, you probably understand what they are saying, but I assume most of us did not make million of dollars hooping, not in Boston, nor in Barcelona haha.
I mean, obviously, different coaches and different teams might have different naming for same plays, but often they might not, because it is such international language and just renaming it is counter intuative, because your players come and go, they do not need to relearn how you call basic plays in your house. NBA teams run ''Spanoullis'' right now, and I bet they call it ''Spanoullis'' haha.

Since listening to the first episode, I became more observant on how LeBron plays. He's definitely one of the best basketball minds ever. "Make the right play" - he almost always does that. I know he's not that much focused on defense now but you can hear him calling out plays/rotations. And on times he needs to be defensive (like in crunch time), he delivers.
