Did The Running Man Rip Off This Movie? Warriors of the Year 2072
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Lucio Fulci's dystopian sci-fi horror flick Warriors of the Year 2072 is a lot of things...including the presumed inspiration for The Running Man. But can the Godfather of Gore cook up another 5 barf bag rating?

I don't generally do this but since I'm tired of explaining this I'm gonna do it here...
Today's video literally discusses how Warriors of the Year 2072 was ripped off by The Running Man. There's a small section about it. This is not about the novel. I'm well aware of when the novel was written. The Running Man film came 5 years after Warriors and bears an uncanny resemblance to Fulci's film (it bears more of a resemblance to Fulci's film than King's book -- by a mile)
Yes, I'm aware of this "A lawsuit determined the movie was plagiarized from the French movie Le Prix du Danger (The Price of Danger) (1983), which was made after Robert Sheckley's 1958 short story "The Prize of Peril", just like the 1970 West German TV movie Das Millionenspiel (The Million Game)."
That doesn't mean they didn't rip off Fulci -- it just means Fulci and the Italians never bothered suing. And really, given how often the Italians got away with ripping off things, why would they? Like here -- this films rips off a lot of stuff all on its own. They sue and win, and they may get sued in return...and really, I don't think anyone in the Italian film industry cared anyway. That's always been the vibe that comes through in interviews with guys like Sacchetti and D'Amato and the like.
I know it's a real adrenaline rush to be the "well actually" guy on the internet...but pointing out the book was written before the film totally misses the point (no one's comparing the film to the book -- if you read the book you know Fulci's film and Glaser's film differ radically from the King novel). Pointing out some other film won a lawsuit doesn't diminish the fact that Paul Michael Glaser's film clearly borrowed pretty liberally from Fulci's film. That's the point here. I know this is the internet where everyone wants to be a boring pedant, but christ -- it's like MST3K: just repeat to yourself it's just a show -- you should really just relax. :p
Trust me, I screw up plenty of stuff. This wasn't one of them. HG out. :-)

It's A Tron Rip-off Sort Of.
Lol! This movie was so bad. It was all over the place. It didn't know whether to either make it about people fighting each other for the entertainment of the masses or to make it about a malevolent A.I. super computer trying to program the human race into slaves for its own amusement. And the main character who is supposed to be the hero protagonist was allegedly an "army soldier" of a sort, but wound up being supposedly a convicted criminal in a prison for...? 🤷♂️ What a fucking shit science-fiction/action-adventure script, lol! 😂 Fulci should've only stuck to directing Italian horror movies that were splatterpunk. Not fake ass wanna be crime dramas that are failed dark, adult comedies.
This is one of those types of mish mash screenplays written by people who tried to imitate biopunk and cyberpunk, then mixed with it dystopian, post-apocalyptic and post-cataclysmic, and honestly thought that they were making a masterpiece of European cinema, but then the hallucinogens wore off and it was the day that they had to turn in the final draft for filming. With virtually no budget, they had to just work with what they had and make all of the make-up and special effects scenes along as they filmed.
@@geeshep4836😊😊😊😊😊😊😊agreed
You remind me of classic MST3K Mike which is why I love this show so much
The novella shares so little with the movie. It’s almost along the lines of Lawnmower man … almost unrecognisable as an adaptation. However, you’ve given me another movie to watch and short story to read! I took a couple of film classes in college as electives (no aspirations to be a filmmaker but I just love film), and there was always That Guy In my classes that had some off-hand take that necessitated a 20 minute monologue posing as a reaction comment. Once the art is out there - in whatever form - it’s open to analysis and interpretation by the watcher - and plagiarism by other writers/filmmakers (which is a civil offense). Stephen king himself disavowed the film version. ANYWAYS usually I enjoy the comments, but great job trying to get ahead of the “well, actually” guy from my film 102 class 🙄. Also kiddo is a doll. Thanks, Mike! Had no idea this existed!
Love the grandson guest appearance!! 🥰
Good looking little Horror Geek!
Maybe he will inherit your title (and channel) in another 20 years!
Where'd he GO though? :/
Yes so cute. Christ i feel old. HG n i are the same age.
I was gonna say you looked a little old to be making those
"Live audiences was banned ten years ago" = There was no money for extras in the movie's budget.
Haha! Nailed it...
Definitely couldn't afford Richard Dawson. Or hell, even Ray Combs.
THE RUNNING MAN: The Rise of Killian.
Kind of a cross of "The Running Man" and the 1975 "Roller Ball" (complete with a discount James Caan).
I was kinda disappointed your grandson didn't run side-by-side commentary thru the entire episode! 🤣🤣🤣 Adorable!!
Man, he REALLY wants that mic!!
He would kill me for it... :p
@@TheHorrorGeek good thing you checked him for machetes before turning the camera on
Always great to see a Fulci movie on the show!
Stir-Fry is the sweetest li’l cutie pie I ever did see! Ya done good, gramps!
Thanks! He's my little dude.
I remember Kung Fu ... David Carradine kung-fu-ing the Old West was always fun.
Fulci's spaghetti westerns from the late 60s early 70s are actually really good. They also have meandering, nonsensical plots, like his horror films, which I see as a feature. They're like having a weird, western nightmare.
Fulci's work was always pretty polished. It could be cheesey and low budget but usually it still looked great and would have it's own, odd quality to it. Watched 'Zombi' for the 1st time in years and forgot how great it was simply on a visual level.
This sounds vaguely familiar. Would one of these be titled El Topo by any chance.
@@mk-ultramags1107 "Zombi"..... YEAH MAN!!!!!
Watched it on VHS shortly after the tape was released for renting in Canada.
A new genre: a spaghetti "WestWorld!" 😊👍
@@Vegeta-k9o no, you are thinking of Alejandro Jodorowski
that sprout has your hand busy as heck
He is super squirmy...
@@TheHorrorGeek they do that as a signal to get to the gore
Lance Henriksen gets a real workout today. Don't sweat it Lance. The royalty check is in the mail.
Aww, you're the cutest Grandpa ever! ❤️
That little guy is spoiled rotten for sure. :p
Great job as usual but your little buddy at the beginning gets the win for adorable.
He's my little helper. :-)
Benny Hill music makes everything better.

I was Dreamin when I wrote this
So forgive me if I missed football practice today
But when I woke up this morning
This was the movie The Horror Geek had picked to play
The city was all miniatures
Gladiators fightin everywhere
Tried to run from the theater
But Fulci says Fungul I better care
Cause they say only a winner can be the hero
Oops! That contestant just went code blue
So tonight I’m gonna war it like it’s 2072

B-Side: “Running (Man) up that Kill” by Kate Bush
Fred Williamson kicks major ass
HOLY CRAP YES
I've been waiting for either you or Brandon tenold or cinema snob to talk about this for so long this is one of the most underrated Lucio fulci flicks I love it so much but no one talks bout it I'm glad one of my all time fav reviewers is
Hopefully one day you'll do Bronx warriors too
I love all these kooky post apocalyptic Italian films (oddly, this one might be my least favorite only because I expect so much from Fulci...it's still fun though). I'll see how this one does and may do more.
@@TheHorrorGeek yeh it really doesn't get as crazy as I hoped it would either but I still love what craziness is in there I mean hell he didn't really do much with the gladiator thing either
And whether you do more or not I will be there good sir 🫡
I've never seen this one! Budget Han Solo looks like Chris Prat with a bad perm. I love it already.
0:23 always wondered what Mike would look like without the beard 🤣
That Yakety Sax really fits.

Man, I really miss my grandkids as babies. Enjoy every moment. That little guy is going to grow up telling all his friends how cool his grandpa is, and he’ll have the video to prove it. And I remember Wink!
He's already growing so fast...a year old in a few weeks. Sometimes I get up in the morning and pick him up and it's like you can literally see he's grown overnight.
Mike, seeing your Grandson make another appearance on the show, warmed my heart! I loved how you totally lost that battle for control over the microphone. LOL! Very cool man... ! From one Grandpa to another... very cool!
Haha! he's got a one track mind that kid... :p
Dam You! Yakitty Sax is my ringtone. I thought my phone was ringing! Lol
Haha!
Rewatched this one recently, cheesy fun. Look forward to your commentary lol🤘🏼🙌🏾
GRATUITOUS YAKETY SAX.
Your grandson’s smirk at, “Let’s Get Bloody” is everything.
"And today we're tackling Lucio Fulci's post-apocalyptic classic...."
No...Today you're tackling your grandson..
you have the cutest grandson, and it is so cute you bring him on this channel, he is going to love it when he grows up and you show him this
I hope he does. I’m always like if something ever happens to me he’s at least got all these videos to kind of get to know me/ feel like I’m always there. 😀
I saw this one on Amazon Prime a couple of years back. Oh that Fulci goodness!
hey mike! we got a fulci eye zoom connaisseur here!
Oooh, looking forward to this! Doesn't look like it's to the level of Parts: The Clonus Horror VS The Island, but I can definitely see the DNA of The Running Man in here.
2:36 It was also released under the alternate title: Copyright 1983 🤣🤣
This one is pretty bat sh!t crazy. And the foley work is top notch. And the special effects are pretty special. All in all, it's a pretty fun movie. Unless you're sensitive to flashing lights. Keep up the good work Mike.
Running 🏃♂️ man happened in 2017 -2019 dystrophy America.
60 years later didn't get better on earth .
Bedazzled Jason mask, Yackety Sax, swallowing tongue, Poe quote, Buddhist lounge wear line, kids menu, parallel parking, EVIL Mike McDonald, motorcycle Ice Capades and can't mourn forever.
True, but I can barely breathe from laughing.
You forgot continual pun-ishing.
Need to do a double feature of this one with The Running Man.
They really go together perfectly.
I had never honestly heard of Lucio Fulci before seeing your show, although I had seen New York Ripper.
Where the Grand Prize is Your Life!!!
"Does anyone even remember Luke & Laura??"
"Christ We're old!"
Ah, but do you remember the Luke and Laura rap song from 1981? It was so bad it was... awful.
Great review of flick I've never heard of, this drake was also in enigma from fulci as well as war of the world's TV show from the 80's
Your grandson is adorable! Switching between doggedly pursuing the mic and trying to figure out just who you were talking to! Precious!
Haha thank you!
I haven't seen a game show in years, bring it on!
Fulci woo! Al Cliver woo!
Whenever I drive by the Cinecittà’s studios now I always think of Mike.
Haha! I love this!
I loved this movie. I watched it so many times.
Wow.... Barely any gore, and no gratuitous nudity? I am very disappointed.
Seriously, the best fight scene in this one was when your grand-child almost strangled the mic.
We may have been robbed ... but the grandchild does make up for the serious lack of gore. So that is a plus, I guess.
The little guys a fighter, right enough.
I wanna see he go for the beard.
Thank you, Mike, for uploading another Fulci flick. Love the grandson, brother!
2:13 Love your grandsons smile when you say LET'S GET BLOODY!
He loves that when I do it around the house. :p
LMAO!!! I was convinced American Gladiator was our first step to getting Thunder Dome on Friday Nights.
Laughed pretty hard during the intro. Like, 'How am I gonna watch the show with Mike wrangling his adorably squirmy grandkid!'
Aside from being light on the gore-card and, well - gladiating - 'Warriors' actually looks like something I'd enjoy, as the goof factor seems high.
It’s very high. I like it.
1:54 I couldn't read an autocue without goofing normally. Doing it whilst holding a wriggling baby takes real skill 👍
Haha! yeah, that one was a challenge. :p
Your grandson REALLY wanted your microphone! LOL.
He's obsessed with it.
Good to see horror runs in the family 😎 ! Is it just me or does Claudio look like Stacy Keech?
My daugher (his mother) is a big horror fan too. He's gonna be a horror geek for sure.
@@TheHorrorGeekaw my pops and I don’t have much in common, but we always come together over horror and always have. He’s not into gore or anything too upsetting anymore, but we’ll watch crappy PG 13 horror together in the theater, and my dad is always like TEN OUT OF TEN for crap like Tarot, but I know it’s actually because of us spending special time together:)
That's so awesome!
AWWWW little Geek is adorable. He's got a good future ahead of him.
5:15 Everything is better with the"Benny Hill" theme
Not gonna lie, seeing you and your grandson was THE highlight of the video for me. LOVE it.
Let's get bloody
Grandson establishing shot....
I just did a Fulci eye zoom on that thumbnail :P
Living your best life... :p
So sounds great on paper. This cast too come on. Then Fulci gets the rug pulled out from under us all. At 5:15-it was working. Long live Wink Martindale!
I love how all of these were ripoffs of something but still felt super unique
The beauty of the Italian ripoffs were they were always ripoffs but they also did their own thing...which makes them very cool.
@@TheHorrorGeek and hell 2019 after the fall of New York even predicted a movie they were so fun I hope we see a resurgence from these guys one day
Always thumbs for grandkids! 😊 (And the episode lol)
Good to see your grandson helping out. Rip offs come from a lack of creativity, but today in order to avoid lawsuits, they just use templates aka sequel prequel remake.
The turtle would be both naked & homeless.
I always forget that Lucio Fulci directed this movie.
Once again, I saw this movie on Troma's UA-cam channel when they had many of their movie catalogues up there.
They released this movie on DVD in 2001 under the title "The New Gladiators".
1:27 the exact same face, with and without beard.
And thank you for introducing me to this film. Like other Fulci works, it's eye-catching.

Easily one of the best and most entertaining channels on YT, never disappoints and brings to our attention movie we may not have heard of. Keep up the great Work Mike and Team.
Thanks Roc!
THANKS MIKE!
You totally missed a Shriners joke with the motorcycle riders.
Hi Sterling!! Made another banger Matt. I love it when you change the Hell Yeahs . 😂 Lots of love to you and yours from California ❤🌞
Grandson?!? Geez at least I feel young now. Thanks Mike!
A good ole post apacolyptic italian flick. Chefs kiss. 🫡🫡🍻
Pretty tame for a Fulci movie.
Very tame...
I almost gave up trying to find this movie to watch before your review but I did a search on my Roku TV this morning and found out it is playing on Plex so I watched it this morning and immediately felt I had seen this movie before but I see you are already on the ball with the title of this video lol
That miniature twilight megacity was so cool that I really wanted a kaiju to stomp on it. Not an A-list kaiju - more, like, Gigan
First motorcycle chase was like a WISH version of TRON, second one was like the MST3K Sidehackers!
Didn't love crappy movie...did love your special guest who is just adorable. He made a cute little smile when you said let's get bloody 🥰
Great job this week Mike! Enjoy your time with your grandson. He is a handsome little fella.
He keeps me busy...but I love him to death.
Thanks Mike!
13:28 In French, it IS called "double V".
I thought at first that the announcer called it "The Battle of the Dance", which would have been one hell of a twist.
Thanks for the laugh with the Ovaltine quip. Ralphie would be proud. 😊
9:03 Is that Les Nessman reporting from the WRKP helicopter?
14:53 Is that gun made out of Legos?
Wink Martindale? Heck, I remember Chuck Woolery...2-in-2, baby! ✌️
That bedazzling on the motorcycles is infomercial level! “Call now and get a travel Bedazzled By The Light craft kit free!!” Now I just have to wait 4-6 weeks for delivery, no COD. Of course. Do you kids even remember the tv commercials for crap?? Christ I’m old!
0:07 Mike, it would have been hilarious if your grandson was sporting a mighty beard. ;)
I absolutely love your interactions with Stirfry. You're the best!
Thank you!
You mean there is a bad time to drop acid?! The More You Know!
More baby co-hosting and you'll have to change the barf bag to dirty diapers!
So this is like what? An early 1980s Italian action/fantasy/sci-fi/horror movie that is like Mad Max meets the Warriors, but with a little bit of European sexploitation on the side?
Yeah kinda.
Stir Fry!!! ❤
Mike, now I do feel old, mate. I was fifteen when I saw this. Like Deadly Prey, The Running Man and Mad Max. Remember Jared Martin from War of the Worlds😂😂😂😂
I love Italian sci-fi as they always spend more money on sets & costumes than on the writing. Growing up I wanted to be an Italian Sci-fi Chick. They always had such style.
Stir fry knows how to work that camera…more Stirfry!!!!!
you and Brandon Tenold are the funniest, I love your knowledge about all these amazingly good and bad movies and tv shows, you are a wealth of interesting history
Thank you! I love Brandon too. 😀
Thank you for this review! There are elements outside this movie that make the review especially memorable to me. First, your mixing the Benny Hill Show theme with movie scenes is genius. What would the sequence have looked like if you had sped up the film? Second, you like Manimal. That makes two of us! True, some scenes with Simon supposed to be an animal were less than convincing (a raven flying off, a wolf walking into the woods, a fake panther paw pushing a button), but I like the series a lot.
"But enough about that!" Again, I'm surprised to see that Fulci did with so little gore again. I wonder if he tried to escape from his "Godfather of gore" tag by reducing the gore in his films.
The special effects are at times really cheap. The effects created for Escape from New York, which is two or three years older, are more convincing. What is especially remarkable is the laser shots, which sometimes start in thin air and not in the guns used in the corresponding scenes. That reminded me of the (also Italian) film Star Crash (a rip-off of Star Wars - so much for the mass of rip-offs in the Italian film industry!), in which laser shots also often come from everywhere but not from the guns that were used. Let me end my digressing by pointing out that Caroline Munro starred in Star Crash, wearing mostly only little clothing in it.
I'm afraid the one barf bag you awarded to Warriors ... is justified. Even if we add the burning man that is pulled by one of the motorcycles in one sequence, we won't find any reason to raise the amount.
The best part of this is finding out many of you also love Manimal! I have felt very alone in that love for years.
Lucio Fulci...let the eye zooms commence 🤣
If this is like The Running Man, they should definitely have named it: "Warriors of the Year, 2072"
As if the show within the show is called "Warriors of the Year."
21:10 - 21:11 Can someone please fix that faulty light bulb? 🤣
I ADORE these Italio Deep Dives, Mike! The cute factor with your co-host busted through the roof! Italian Chunk-Blowers Forever!
your Grandson ready for podcasting and youtube'ing horror movie reviews... I think i actually heard him say guys when you said say hello to the guys... the kid has star in the making written.

We hear you, BabyHorrorGeeek, we hear you. But one day, you'll learn to not only appreciate, but actually love watching all the cheezy action and horror schlock as much as your pap pap. 😁
[edit] On a serious note, one of my very fondest memories is sneaking out of bed upon hearing my dad get home late from work. He'd pop up some popcorn on the stove with a sprinkle of salt or maybe whip up some crackers and cheese, and we'd enjoy some late night awesomeness like Dr. Who (Tom Baker was my first doctor), some classic Mystery, or whatever the nightly creature feature was. I'd be tired as hell in the morning for school, but I wouldn't trade those late night memories for anything. 👍
Haha! that sounds amazing! Hope I can do stuff like that for little Stir Fry.
