  • 2025 Volvo EX90 First Ride: Embracing Silence and Comfort
Volvo's upcoming three-row EV, the EX90, emphasizes quiet, comfort, and sustainability.
The first noticeable feature during our ride in a pre-production version of the all-new electric Volvo EX90 is its remarkable silence. Unlike most of its battery-electric competitors, it doesn’t generate artificial engine sounds or mimic futuristic noises during acceleration.
True to its rational design philosophy, Volvo avoids unnecessary skeuomorphs-like candle-shaped bulbs on electric chandeliers or fake shutter sounds on cellphone cameras-that aim to make technology familiar. In the EX90, the goal is the quietest cabin ever, so adding sound effects was deemed counterproductive.
This logical approach underscores Volvo's entry into the electric three-row SUV market. The EX90’s predecessor, the XC90, has long been the brand's flagship. While the entry-level EX30 EV is crucial for attracting new buyers, the EX90’s success is vital for the company's financial health.
During our ride at Volvo's Hällered Proving Ground, lead vehicle-dynamics engineer Mattias Davidsson highlighted the EX90’s design brief: "predictable, controllable, and comfortable." He emphasized its flagship status, aiming to be the most comfortable vehicle in the lineup. The EX90 demonstrated its smooth ride over simulated European cobblestones, L.A. freeway joints, and New York City manhole covers.
A new computer-actuated dual-chamber air suspension helps the EX90 feel refined and stable even on rough terrain. This system, an evolution of the single-chamber setup used in the XC90 and XC60, reacts instantly to road imperfections, enhanced by hydro-bushings in the axles. The 107.0-kWh battery lowers the center of gravity, further stabilizing the vehicle. "We prioritized directional stability and linear feel," Davidsson noted. Though we weren’t driving, the ride was notably smooth.
While Volvo hasn't disclosed the EPA range yet, they estimate around 300 miles for the most efficient model, equipped with a 402-hp Twin Motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, achieving 0-60 mph in about 5.7 seconds. The 510-hp Twin Motor Performance model, in which we rode, is expected to be quicker but with a reduced range.
Inside, the cabin maintains a Scandinavian-modern aesthetic with backlit bent wood veneers, ample storage options including a frunk, and minimalist design. The dimensions and silhouette closely resemble the XC90, which might feel conservative given the design freedom typically associated with EVs.
The EX90 also features systems preparing for autonomous driving, with redundancies in braking, steering, and power delivery. These contribute to its substantial curb weight but also enable bidirectional energy storage to power homes or accessories.
Volvo will continue producing the XC90 as long as there's demand, providing an option for those not ready to switch to an EV. Known for safety, premium materials, and sustainability, the EX90 isn’t a driver’s car but excels in delivering comfort and practicality.
If you're seeking a three-row electric SUV that balances the attributes of a Kia EV9 and a Mercedes EQS SUV, without the extreme design or opulence, the EX90 might be your ideal choice. It looks and acts like a Volvo, which is a commendable quality. Stay tuned for a full drive review later this summer to experience it firsthand.
