Ha! Yes I agree! Not a banjo picker but I play the mandolin....however I am 62 and I will start growing my white beard. Thank you Bela! You have inspired and helped me more than you know. Big Country has brought me many soothing moments in an otherwise tumultuous time. Mark Lowrey Jazz Trio in Kansa City does a GREAT cover!

So beautiful, thank you. "for his mercy endureth forever" (from Psalm 136) Mercy or forgiveness is available to all according to the scriptures. The following is a quote from the writings of Marshall Vian Summers on forgiveness: "Be grateful today that your errors have been forgiven. Be grateful today that condemnation is not justified. Be grateful today that you have this opportunity to come to Knowledge, which will affirm that which is truest and greatest within you. Be grateful today that there is no justification in denying this, for without guilt and blame you can only receive that which life has to offer you... Let this be a day to celebrate your freedom." (The New Message, Marshall Vian Summers)
Great music soars above the pain and confusion of troubled times. Soothes and heals the heart, mind and soul. Thanks for the wonderful new inspirational collaborations.
This is the Godfather of the Modern Acoustic Musical Art we are witnessing. "Old and in the Way" was the bridge from Acuff, and the rest, to Fleck. That these two artists are able to meet is... nice. Nice thing about being modern - more possible for great artists to meet. Actually, is true - more good artists live longer, distances are "fewer"... Is the reason this music is reaching such heights. Taking the old, never forgetting it, transformed into something never seen before. It's nice to See this grow.
Great Chapter. Great music. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of Lords, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever; the sun to rule over the day, for his steadfast love endures forever; the moon and stars to rule over the night, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, for his steadfast love endures forever; and brought Israel out from among them, for his steadfast love endures forever; with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who divided the Red Sea in two, for his steadfast love endures forever; and made Israel pass through the midst of it, for his steadfast love endures forever; but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who led his people through the wilderness, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who struck down great kings, for his steadfast love endures forever; and killed mighty kings, for his steadfast love endures forever; Sihon, king of the Amorites, for his steadfast love endures forever; and Og, king of Bashan, for his steadfast love endures forever; and gave their land as a heritage, for his steadfast love endures forever; a heritage to Israel his servant, for his steadfast love endures forever. It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever; and rescued us from our foes, for his steadfast love endures forever; he who gives food to all flesh, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 136:1-26
Two of the very best making such wonderful magic together. There really is something truly amazing and life affirming to see these musicians at the top of their careers having so much fun creating both unity and variety with this melody as their playground.
Thanks ever so much for posting this, gents. Mr. Thile: YOU were my first mando lesson via Homespun videos about 10 years ago. You taught me to love Bluegrass and Bach! The mando in turn led me to a whole world of Americana and other genre that I never even knew existed. So much music, so little time. God bless u guys.
This is so mind-blowing. The interaction, the intertwining of instruments and melodies - it's not only a blast to listen to, but so much fun to watch each master musician being impressed, inspired and entertained by the other. The reactions mid-performance to each other's contributions, in addition to seeing how each is riveted to one another while playing the most complex of arrangements. The silent acknowledgement of each player to the other's solos and then to finish with a subtle, verbal high-five. Masterful in every way. Thanks for blessing us with the joy you both bring the music and each other's performance.
Such a beautiful song, and really the whole album is too. Been listening on spotify for a while, but wanted to see this one played live, and noticed that this clip was posted on my birthday. Great coincidence
Psalm 136 is an appropriate title for this joyful tune. Psalm 136 is one if the psalms of praise and thanksgiving, beginning with "Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good! For his mercy endures forever."
Not human. These guys are just incredible. I've enjoyed them separately for years, and been in awe of them, This is a ridiculously complicated piece played with so much aplomb that it just feels like another Sunday afternoon for them. Thanks for this; if "bluegrass" can be raised to a higher plane, you will do it.
Just frikkin' SICK! I feel so fortunate to be alive to witness these guys at their peak (so far!) - and this historic music being introduced to the world. Thanks & congrats, Bela!
Beautiful music. I love how Bela's Picking is still jawdroppingly complex, but (to me personally) so much gentler and soothing than his work with the Flecktones. The new records is I think one of those albums that I will keep listening to discovering new things every time. It has but one drawback...I have to fight the urge to put my banjo back in the case because I know that this level of playing as waaaaaaay out of my reach.
I was thinking the exact same thing! Love the Flecktones and what they did for a season. Bela's playing is still so technically complex, yet... gentler. I think it's the beard!
These two are really leading the way in terms of modern improvisation across genres and just in terms of skill and unbelievable musicianship. It really doesn't get better IMHO!
Looking good with that beard, Bela! I've had the pleasure of seeing you many times, both solo, and with the Flecktones. Your talent and love for the music is touching. I look forward to the next time we commune.
Incredible talent. At 1:35 Chris start a run and Bela gives him a look that says it all. And again at 2:50 they land together and trade a great smile, as if to say "Yeah, that's how it's done"
The 2:50 one was nuts, they're just off playing God knows what, making brains warp with some shit you can't even comprehend let alone remember there's an actual song structure they started with, and then just bam, back to your regularly scheduled programming
Great hearing you two together! Gotta admit, the opening shot of Chris' face sent me on a flashback to 1974 when I first met his father Scott at San Dieguito High School.
The complexity of this tune and its utter musicianship and craftsmanship of you both immiediately brings "Bicyclops" into mind, which by the way was the first tune by Béla that I ever heard. I'm following you both guys since late 1990s, first "Tales" record for Béla and "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" for Chris. Both of those records are still in my top 10, and it's always such an immense pleasure to hear and see you two play together. Thank you!
I was playing some Bela with Chick Corea a few days ago and thinking " I wonder if he's done anything with Chris? " and I wake up to find this. I'm taking credit for this because I threw it out there into the universe.... your welcome.
Boy are you in for a treat! These two of done a ton of great stuff together including an album of Bach comps with Edgar Meyer, contributions to one another's solo albums (especially Not All Who Wander Are Lost and Perpetual Motion), but my favorite are the two Goat Rodeo Sessions they did alongside YoYo Ma and Stuart Duncan. Enjoy (and thanks for the manifestation)!
They're both gargantuan monsters. More importantly, though, it didn't get in the way of the absolutely delightful making of music. The music of it was released through their just plain insane mastery.

Yes they should, managing a McDonalds has to get old! 😆
Hope they both have some kinda Plan B, in case this “music” thing doesn’t pan out

Me too. I loved PHC, but Live From Here was a much more creative musical program. Chris's collaborations were spectacular.
I too miss it dearly. It was unparalleled.
I agree…

The complexity of this composition, not reading anything and the precision. Is the stuff of genius.

Thank you, Janice.
Everytime these two masters sit down and play together, magic happens.
These fellas have taken their instruments light years ahead of where they found them, and continue to expand what can be done with them.
That look after the solo. I-IV-V keeps you young. Remember that kids, three major chords is all it takes.
The new album is spectacular. Thank you Bela for assembling such a great band👍💕💯
Thats what I feel. It's up there with my old vintage jazz collection, my entire AKUS collection and Bach!
The band is incredible aren't they.
